Consistency. That's what I want in a donut. If it was great last time I got it, I want it great the next time. Donut Star always delivers the same donuts, at a decent price, and that's why I keep going back. I love apple fritters, and not the kind that are full of apple sauce or big apple chunks, but a well made fritter that's crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. That's how they make them, and they're always the same. Stop by this place. They people are nice, they prices are nice, and the donuts are yummy. One warning. When they sell out, they're done and they close. That could be at 10:30AM or 4:00PM. They don't keep the store open with 5 donuts in the case, and they don't bake all day. I suspect this place has gone downhill since '07. I've been driving past it for years, but it's always been on the other side of the road. This Sunday, the thought of another box of Safeway donuts just didn't float my boat and I made a u-turn, fighting traffic (and the godawful traffic cameras!) to get to this place. Nice, mid-seventies ambiance. Couple of people hanging out drinking coffee (the drip kind), a little boy from the neighborhood buying his kid sister a donut. Real old-school cases. The donuts all looked great and the woman was putting out apple fritters. Big, juicy looking fritters as big as my head (1.50 ) I bought 3 cake, 1 sprinkle, 2 chocolate covered custard filled, a maple bar, and two apple fritters, and they were all stale. Beautiful, heavy (like a good donut should be) and they made my car smell great. And I loved the old fashioned pink bakery box with the stamp on top. I suspect they only make fresh donuts for display and during the week for people bringing it in for their office donut-buddies (everybody has friends when there are free donuts). First time here today and I will now always get my donut fix here. The donuts are so fresh and light. I had a Bavarian creme donut and the creme was thick and smooth. So good. The staff was very friendly and Sweet. Highly recommend! read more

This is a great little family-owned donut shop. This type of independent donut shop is hard to find, but it's worth the trip to Auburn to find Donut Star. I'm not sure what has happened to the doughnut. They used to be so tasty and simple. These days a doughnut store is so hard to find and when you do find them, they are either closed, or out of the doughnut you came for. I stopped here one Sunday as I passed by, it was close to noon as I recall. 75% of the doughnuts, if not more were gone and only a few remained to choose from. That said, I had a maple bar that tasted pretty much how I expected. The service was friendly and this place appeared to have been family run. The only way to truly rate them would be to get there early enough to choose a better assortment. Not my neighborhood, but if it was, I would surely try them again. read more

First time here, what I loved about the place was the CUSTOMER SERVICE, she just ROCK it and to me, it's a lost skill, almost a art of people interacting with others and Yes it was early, no lines of people waiting but the few minutes she interacted with me, I knew she enjoyed her job and enjoyed dealing with people and because of that, she had a product that was going to be AWESOME... as for the Donut, it was good, the jellies are a little light on the filling, the dough was a little oily for me, just a little, most people wouldn't even notice it but I'm so much of a DONUT SNOB (Dad had a donut shop as a kid, so been around it most of my life) and every place a lived, I have to check out the local DONUT Shops and let me say, I'LL BE BACK.... plus for what I got, I know Dad is turning in his grave, it was very reasonable priced, overall experience was great, thank you again read more

I'm not a big fan of donuts, because it's often way too sweet for my taste and the dough is way too dense. However, when I do crave some sweets, this is a good place to get some donuts. Very tasty and dough is nice and soft. Kids like the maple bars. They have a good selection of donuts. Since my daughter and husband both has a sweet tooth, I usually get a dozen, plus the price is only $10.50 . There use to be an older lady that work at the shop, she's always giving kids free donut holes with our orders. Very sweet lady. Now there's a young lady that works there. Not sure if it's the same owner. However, donut still taste the same. read more

I love this place!!! I've lived in the area for almost 30 years and they have been here before me. So I know that the family has ups and downs especially with the location of the store, the corner is so bad that they've always had troubles with accidents when people would fly through the corner and blow right into their store. Bad luck but they keep going strong, bless their hearts as they bless our stomachs with great donuts! read more

I'm gonna give this place a 4 1/2. I had a severe donut craving yesterday. I was determined to end up with a few krullers in my mouth. When I called their sister location they only had 2 frosted krullers and when I called here they had 6. My own damn fault for taking so long and not hurrying down here as there were none left and nearly sold out. I did however have very delicious old fashioned donuts, 2 chocolate and 1 maple iced. Then one powdery lemon filled. I was shocked that I really liked it. So I did not make my kruller goals but I did have a donutty day! I can't believe people love krullers more than I do. I should open a kruller shop. I would call it Kruller2BKind. Anyways this place is where donuts taste like donuts are supposed to taste. You can either sleep in and get no donuts or get donuts, go back to sleep and when you wake up again you'll have a few more donuts to go with your coffee or tea. I actually really love this place. It's small but very cozy and very old school. But I kinda like it that way. Any ways, the donuts here are very delicious! Why? Well I was on my way to work one day around 5 in the morning and I noticed that the lights were on so it must of been open. My work was only a few blocks away so I dropped off my things and came back with a donut order from my work building. First off.. The min I walked in all I could smell was freshly baked maple bars. (I had to grab at least 4 of those since they were fresh) but I must say my all time fave is the pink crowns they make. second... i I heard the younger man called out dad to the older man. Thats when I noticed this is def a family owned and I like that! Family owned is always a plus in my book because you feel a sense of care in the quality when you know the business is what's paying for their bills. Third I chatted with the father son duo and found out that they make freshly baked donuts EVERY MORNING from sometimes 2-3 am just to get these donuts out! Fourth and finally..What ever they don't sell for the day they donate it! I don't know if its to homeless shelter or animal shelters but I like knowing that the left overs aren't going to waste. If I could I'd give them more stars i would. I believe the only downfall is if you were to go at any other time other then the morning they would have a much smaller selection because they do make limited amounts a day. read more

Yea! It's another donut Friday and fortunately for us Tom is on donuts this week and he always goes to Donut Star so we know it's going to be great. Just saying these are the best donuts I've ever had. You can tell they really care about putting out a light, tasty, consistent pastry, and I do call it a pastry because donut just doesn't seem good enough to describe these. EXTREMELY RUDE customer service. I came into this donut shop on a Sunday around noon due to being in Auburn for a basketball tournament. Their donut selection was down to 3 varieties, with less than 10 donuts total, and the shop was empty of customers when we came in. A young woman came to the counter and explained that they often run out of donuts on Sundays, and that they do not make more, but close when they are out. Being as we'd visited another donut shop that was also low on supply (where THEY were very polite and friendly), we were tired of searching. I asked to have two of the last remaining chocolate covered chocolate donuts, and then asked about the coffee. I could see behind the young woman that the coffee decanter had only about an inch remaining. I asked if it was fresh and she said it was. I asked how long ago the pot had been brewed and she responded it had been brewed a half hour before. Knowing that small amounts of coffee that sit for that long in my own coffeemaker at home can taste burned, I asked to sample the coffee, and she gave me a small sample. It WAS burned, and not fresh, so I asked if she'd brew another pot. She said they were out of coffee. Yet I could see in the coffee ground dispenser that the top of it was half full of grounds! and I pointed that out. She then informed me that she would NOT be making another pot of coffee. I said, "I don't understand, you are saying you won't brew a new pot so I can order a large to go cup?" She said, "No." I couldn't believe it, and we walked out of this shop and left. I will NEVER patronize this shop again, ever, and have told all the parents in the basketball the story of this shop's rude customer service and total lack of desire to please the customer. DO NOT PATRONIZE. read more

Tasty donuts and great service. Needed to jump on a my laptop so I came and got a donut. After getting my donuts the lady came out and wiped down my already clean table and closed the blinds to keep the glare down. Ask if my spot was good. I love this donut shop! The donuts are priced very cheaply but are delicious. I have never gotten a stale donut here and I go frequently. I find their donuts to be far superior to any grocery store or Krispy Kreme. The owner is the sweetest lady and has a great relationship with her customers. read more

Awesome doughnuts! Iam a hero when I bring these into work! The apple fritters are the best - just zap them in the micro wave when you get to work or home and those wonderful little pools of sugar and fat start to glisten! These are by far the best donuts in the state, and I used to work in a bakery for years! The Buttermilk donuts have a very desirable strong buttermilk taste and they are dense and fluffy, which is the proper way to make them. The owners are very personable and always greet you with a smile. They also sell a variety of Monster energy drinks (the green are the best) and they go very well with the raspberry filled ones. read more

Donut Star has been through some changes over the years. Now their donuts are consistently delicious. My boss buys them for us every couple of weeks here at work, and they are awesome.
