November 2023 With the City of San Jose's request for commercial, industrial, and institutional properties to terminate watering of ornamental lawns and turf, Santa Teresa Hills Presbyterian Church complied and stopped watering its turf in the summer of 2022. Our turf areas (which were extensive) dyed and, of course, became unsightly. At my first meeting on-site with Tim Dooling, I knew I had found someone who was willing to work with me in bringing my landscape designs involving California natives and drought-tolerant plants to fruition. Tim shared his extensive knowledge freely, has an easy-going demeanor, always arrived on time, and was always accessible and responsive via text, phone, and email on a regular basis throughout all aspects of the project. Tim and his crew were personable and easy to work with; sensitive to church personnel and the nesting preschool on the property, and I appreciated being involved in every aspect of the transformation process that took less than a month. Tim Dooling and his team went above and beyond with my landscape project. Tim arrived exactly when he said he would and got back to me promptly when I reached out with questions. He took measurements of my backyard and emailed me a proposal, outlining material costs and labor costs. Some places inflate material costs, but he didn't. He showed me the true price of materials, and the labor cost was absolutely fair. I was told it would take three days to complete my project, and that was exactly how long it took. He sent a two man crew but oversaw the project and checked in on it each day. His crew was great. They were super friendly and paid amazing attention to detail. For months my wife and I contemplated renovating our backyard and deciding if we should hire someone or do it ourselves. Our backyard is small but required a lot of work due to overgrown weeds, mostly dead plants and a badly damaged drip system. After shopping around we were referred to Tim. We sent an inquiry through his website and heard back the next day! Even during the pandemic, he showed up on the agreed upon day and time to offer a very fair estimate. Less than a week from our initial email, we hired Tim and his crew and they got started. Tim and his crew recently designed and installed the landscaping in our front yard. It was a little tricky getting that first appointment, but after we met him in person things moved along quickly. He was patient, answered our questions, and spent a lot of time with us at a local nursery, helping us select plants. The installation went smoothly and on schedule. So far, our yard looks great! We are waiting to see if all the plants survive. Tim assured us that he stands by his work and will take care of any issues with the plants and irrigation system. UPDATE!! Although Tim is a nice guy, it is almost IMPOSSIBLE TO GET IN TOUCH WITH HIM. He does not respond to email, text, or phone. Called them for an estimate for ivy removal on Thursday April 14. Tim called back promptly and politely said he'd call me back on Tuesday April 19th to schedule a visit to my house for later that week. Called back on Tuesday and said he could come the following day, Wednesday, in the afternoon. Called me Wednesday afternoon saying he was too busy to come by, but could come by on Thursday afternoon (today). I just called him to ask for an ETA, and he said he had spaced out the appointment, even though it was on his calendar. Said he would NOT be coming after all. No sale. read more

Tim Dooling was a pleasure to work with on our landscaping project. Our backyard was a complete disaster before Tim came in and suggested options and worked his magic! Before I made the call to Tim, I had a vision, but it needed refinement. I was interested in pavers or decomposed granite for the main area but couldn't make a decision. Tim came over, surveyed the area and gave me the pros and cons of both and did not pressure me one way or another. After careful consideration with the boss, the wife, we picked DG. Tim penciled me into his schedule about a week out and the process went as smoothly as could be. His main man, Gustavo came by the Friday before the project to get briefed on the specifics. Gustavo gave a few suggestions and we were set on a 4 day project. The first day, Gustavo leveled the dirt and started the baseboards. The next day, Gustavo laid the base rock and finished the baseboards. On the third day, Gustavo added the DG and packed it in. On the last day, the hardener was added and voila, our backyard was done! The precision and cleanliness of the job was outstanding! Tim was easy to deal with and communicated very well via text/phone calls. Gustavo was a hard worker and promised it to be a 4 day job. Tim Dooling and his crew did a fabulous job of redoing my backyard. They removed all of the pavers that covered my yard, took out the old sprinklers that didn't work, took out the plants that I didn't want to save and re-did it with a beautiful patio and walkways in decomposed granite, built inviting arbors, put in lighting and a fountain and put in all of the plants that my landscape designer called for. Tim and all of his crew were easy to work with, had some good ideas themselves that we incorporated, were always on time and were reasonably priced. I consider it a "garden" now, not a yard. Simply put, you can't go wrong with Dooling Landscape! I actually felt strong enough about the level of service I got to create this account and do my first Yelp review. We are first-time landscapers, and were working with a very limited budget to deal with landscaping. The home we got was in dire need of help, as all the previously existing landscaping had died off. All that was left was dirt and weeds. We dealt directly with Tim, and found him to be extremely professional, helpful, and very respectful of our home and our ideas. He came out several times to look over the land and discuss our ideas, as well as share many of his own at our request. He was great in that he would listen to us for exactly what we wanted, but also respectfully share subtle changes that would be for the better of the design. To be thorough, we did get several quotes. While Dooling's was not the absolute lowest we got in terms of price, he was VERY affordable compared to the others...especially when you factor in the level of service we were already getting. When it came time to finalizing the design, Tim took us down to the local nursery where he would be getting our actual plantings. He was patient and very informative as we walked the entire nursery discussing our ideas and his of what should go where. When we were done, we had physically seen most of the plants and trees that were actually going to be in our yard. As the project began, Tim was in constant communication with us on progress and timing. He started and completed the project in a very timely manner, and right on schedule with his promise! We now have a new sprinkler system, new sod for front lawn, and beautifully arranged plantings and redwood compost surrounding the front. He also did exterior lighting for the landscaping, highlighting the focal points in the landscaping along with pathway lighting. All in all, this was an amazing experience for us watching our yard transform. We have heard many horror stories about service for new home-buyers, but I can honestly say that Tim Dooling exceeded our hopes at every turn. I had problems with several sections of the sod not being healthy (plenty of water) and asked Tim to repalce it. He commited to a thursday repair and was a no show. I called four times and never got a return call. I had my gardener repair the sod. I would not recommend this contractor. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Tim and his crew, they are simply the best landscapers I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Several months ago I hired Tim to come in and remove a failed sod install that contracted a fungus (previous landscaper was horrible) and redo the entire lawn. Tim and his crew arrived on time each day and left the yard cleaner than it was when they arrived! I think one review on here mentions that Tim is difficult to contact, all I can say is that Tim can be a little delayed in returning calls / emails, but he has never failed to get back to me. I can also assume that this is due to him being very busy, which I would think is a good sign. I will definitely be using Tim and his team for future jobs. His pricing definitely seems fair, not the cheapest and definitely not the most expensive, but for the quality of work it is one hell of a bargain! read more

Tim gave me a full quote but we ultimately picked out the most important items that fit out budget. He gave great suggestions for plants and rock. I hired Tim to re-sod and expand irrigation in my backyard in mid-March after getting prices from two other landscape firms. Tim's price beat one of them by 25% and the other by 15%, and the latter did not include any tilling or even the extra soil that would have been needed so Tim would have beaten that by probably 25% or more as well (and neither included expanded irrigation if needed). Net, his price was far more reasonable than the other companies. He also removed a medium sized tree and coordinated stump/root removal. Tim's crew, which was very competent, amiable and easy to work with, did an excellent job in preparing the area, installing the extra irrigation, laying the sod and doing daily cleanup over the multi-day job. Special thanks to his foreman, who is extremely competent, makes sure things are done just right and may be the hardest worker among them. The completed job was beautiful. After a couple months, a few brown spots developed where even the impressive numbers and layout of irrigation heads were not covering certain areas well enough (I had thought it might be grubs); I contacted Tim and he returned within a week to inspect and conclude it was a watering problem. A few days after that his crew returned to replace the grass that would not come back and install a few more strategically placed sprinkler heads to ensure total coverage. Tim is a very nice man, reliable and most importantly honest. We worked with only the estimate and no real signed contract, and in the end the invoice was just as we had agreed per estimate and other verbal agreements along the way (he provided good suggestions for and installed some replacement plants I needed). I am tough to please but really can't find any fault with his work. I highly recommend Tim and would re-hire him in the future if we have other landscape needs. read more

I had a different landscaper landscape my front and back yard about 5 years ago but the sprinklers never worked right and often had leaks. Because the sprinklers didn't work well, the lawn and plants always had brown spots or just died. I asked Tim if he could fix my yard and whoa boy did he. My sprinkler system is awesome and my lawns both front and back are always green. He also planted many plants/flowers and now I truly enjoy being in my yard. It's been over a year since he did the work and only had one minor problem when the gardner broke the sprinkler head and Tim was quick to respond and fixed it. If you want outstanding work at a fair price you need to talk to Tim Dooling. I had let my landscaping go due to the drought for over three years and it sure needed TLC. The mowing strips were uprooted by trees: the lawn area was full of weeds and roots from large redwood trees, and was as hard as concrete: the front island of shrubs and a tree was an eyesore; the sprinkler system was just not up to the job, and I needed a ton of sod. I needed help and, as you may well know, who do you trust is a big part of getting the job done right. I was not interested in quibbling over prices. I wanted someone who can tackle the complete job and not leave the hard parts to me. I am also a stickler for details. For me, I viewed Tim is like a general contractor who manages all the work required using the very best people (who you could never find on your own). Tim is in demand so when you ask for an appointment be prepared to wait a week or so. What more can I say!! read more

We had Dooling Landscape install new sod and sprinkler lines for $3500 two years ago. Two leaks showed up in the sprinkler lines in less than a year. I left a message for Tim to come take a look but no response. Lawn was starting to dry, so had another contractor dig around the leaks to find there was *no* glue. This summer, another leak. Another contractor is digging today and no glue whatsoever on any of the PVC joints. I would expect a much better quality for $3K or at least accept responsibility and come fix it. read more

Tim Dooling of Dooling Landscape Service recently completed the conversion of the lawn in our front yard to a drought resistant landscape. We could not be more pleased with the result. Tim was extremely professional and the work was planned in an efficient manner and was completed as projected. However, after a few weeks there were some issues that I thought needed to be addressed, and he never came by and checked after a couple of phone calls and e-mails. Very poor follow-up. read more

I hired Dooling Landscape Service to help with my little backyard. Once everything was in a few items needed to be fixed, like the irrigation system. My current system was replaced with a drip system. Interesting thing is I don't remember asking him to replace my current system. I went along with it because I thought he knew what he was doing and figured it would save money. But three plants died because the drip system was not set up properly. And my lime tree is not getting fruit. It got blossoms and what looks like little tiny limes, but they fall off. I was told it would be fixed but that has not happened. Phone calls and emails go unanswered. I finally did receive an email, but nothing was ever done. No time set up to fix things. The last email I received was on Feb 1 back (after I posted a review on Angie's List) asking me to remind him of what needed to be done. I have not heard back since. I'm terribly disappointed and would never recommend this service. Total waste of money. I now have to hire someone to fix the problems. read more

When I hired Dooling Landscape Service to landscape my residence, little did I know that an even bigger problem would be created. After having researching Dooling Landscape Service, I found Tim Dooling to be very polite and very. accommodating as I had dogs who would be impacted by the backyard landscaping. I was very pleased how the backyard turned out. New sprinkler heads were put in, soil, and then the new sod. In the front yard, Carmel Creeper was put along the easement and the old sod removed. When it came to the demolition and installation of new walkways, that is where things began to unravel. I had previously been informed by Tim that it would take 4 days. It was decided since I would be on vacation I would call him on my return to set up a schedule. I called at the beginning of the week and he thanked me for calling. He stated that things had become very busy and he would call me at the beginning of the following week. He did not and so I called him. He stated that Augustine, who would be installing the walkways, was sick and would call me the beginning of the following week. He did not, I again initiated the call. Tim informed me that Augustine was better and he would call me at the beginning of the following week. No call was forthcoming. By Wednesday of the following week seeing no progress after a month, the old grass returning, and a looming rainstorm that would leave my front yard a mud puddle, I left him a message. I stated that there was a credibility issue as I saw no progress being made and I found it unconscionable that a job would be left unfinished so I informed him that I needed to look elsewhere. At no time was I ever given actual dates as to when the work on the walkways would commence and be completed. He did apologize for not being able to complete the job but apologies are not solutions. His utter lack of follow through has caused me being weeks behind in a project that I had hoped to have had my expectations met. read more
