Love this bar! We walked into Barleymash and then someone told us there was another bar downstairs (gingers) so we went and we loved it! It's a smaller more intimate venue but beautifully decorated and the music was SO good!! They don't have tons of different alcohol down there so they don't really do specialty cocktails, just basic mixed drinks. I got a white wine. Service is better given the more favorable staff to patron ratio, but the ambience isn't nearly as fun if you're looking to watch sports among other fans. Disappointing experience. We love speakeasies and karaoke but there wasn't any speakeasy vibe and there was one guy singing every song because it was dead in there. The bartender mostly ignored us even though we were seated at the bar and stood there chatting with some obnoxious dudes in suits. When we finally got our drinks, it was around $75 bucks for 2 shots and 2 basic cocktails. Im giving 2 stars because the karaoke DJ was very nice. read more

Walked in Ginger's on a Thursday night for karaoke, had a good enough time that we've been back twice more. Barleymash maybe hides their speakeasy a little well, but once you find it, it's worth the effort. Both the DJ Tim and bartender Lane are awesome. Singers of all levels of skill have fun, and the DJ accommodates all genres of music. The drinks are priced reasonably for Gaslamp, and Lane does a great job keeping the coming while keeping everyone's water full and finding the time to belt out a song. My friends and I visited Gingers on a Thursday night for their monthly free comedy show. When you route here you can put in Barley Mash then just head to the back and downstairs to find the Gingers bar. It's a smaller, somewhat classy dive bar with a handful of bar seats, community tables, and couches facing the "stage." Their cocktail menu is based of things from Anchorman, including drinks like Stay Classy and Human Torch. If you are attending something downstairs at Gingers you cannot order food from upstairs while down there. You can either order flatbreads downstairs or go up to Barley Mash, order food, close out and bring it downstairs with you. We ordered flatbreads! I had the pesto chicken accompanied by a cucumber mint mojito. It was marvelous and oh so filling. The bartender was pretty rude, very short with everyone and had little personality, but the waitress working throughout the comedy show was sweet and attentive. The comedy show host had good spirit too, performing the opening act and giving little did bits between performers to engage the crowd. So average 4 stars for staff over all. The comedy show itself had 5 acts and was well worth the visit! 3 out of the 5 acts were absolutely hilarious and one name Alec Parents had us crying laughing not even half way through. It was a really great show and I could tell the host put a lot work into it so I give them props for making it memorable. I would definitely come back for activity like such here again. I don't recommend driving/parking as you will most likely be drinking and Gingers is located in the heart of downtown so good luck finding a spot. Check Facebook for future events to come. read more

We hosted a client event at Ginger's on St. Patrick's Day! To start, I was so impressed with our event coordinator, Whitney. She worked with us to deliver the type of event we wanted on the budget we needed to hit. The event space is perfect. The speakeasy-type environment was so fun for our guests. Everyone commented that the food was delicious and hearty enough to support the cocktails that were flowing. 1000% recommend this spot if you're looking for a private event space in San Diego. I went to San Diego for my birthday weekend with my sister and my friend. We were looking for a cool place for drinks and good music (hip hop). A security guard from another bar recommended Barleymash for good music. That place was madness so we decided to leave BUT as we were walking out we saw the stairs leading to a lower level. We decided to check it out in hopes of finding good music and not an overly crowded bar. And that's exactly what we found at Gingers! Ginger's curious... double meaning lol! SIKE or maybe not, but either way I really enjoyed this spot last month. It totally reminded me of a speakeasy which I digged. This is a hidden gem beneath *Barley Mash* after taking the stairs down, it's a different world below. The cocktail menu has a fun selection with crafty cocktails. I love the decor and overall ambiance here. They play great music and it was pretty crowded the Saturday night I came by. THE BEST MAN CAVE I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!!! Yes you read it here ladies and gents!!! I'm actually afraid of writing a review for this place cause now a whole bunch of people are gonna hit up this place....I'm conflicted!!! This bar is below the wonderful and entertaining Barley Mash. Right when you walk down the stairs, you look out into the basement bar and see cool love white love seat couches in amphitheater style like seating. High top tables and of course....a TV, might I add that there are multiple TVs. IT was so great because you could watch 3 different games (ie Football, Basketball, what have you) all at one time!!! I was in heaven. After you had walked down the stairs, there is a nice sized bar to your left with all you need. The menu was great and similar to what Barley Mash offers. My friends and I had ordered 3 different hashes. I recommend trying all of them because they're damn good y'all!!! Great Spot! We were out with some friends for the weekend and drinking upstairs at Barley Mash when we decided to check out what was down the stairs behind us. GInger's is a Speak Easy / Martini Bar with a cool vibe. We sat at the Bar and were Helped by Stace. I think Stace was 80% of why the place was so good. I've been looking for a good martini bar in SD for quite some time, and this is it! Went here with some friends while on an impromptu bar tour during Comic Con weekend and it was my favorite among all of our stops! It was a nice change from crowded Barleymash and the drinks were fantastic. The bartender Brewer (I'm sure I butchered that spelling, sorry) was so entertaining to talk to and made my friend and I amazing martinis when we asked him to surprise us with something. We held our company holiday party down in Ginger's and it was absolutely perfect. The space was private for our party hours, the bartenders & servers were wonderful, the food was great. This place was at first a bit tricky to find since it is supposedly downstairs to BarleyMash. You have to go inside Barley Mash first and then get to ginger's (thanks for the girl who saw us looking lost from inside who guided us in !) Anyways! when we got there, OH IT IS SO CUTE! and the drinks...man, the drinks were strong (and yummy!) I love gingers. I've spent more time downstairs then I have up at barely mash. Came here on a Tuesday night to watch some friends play. Very laid back. The two female singers, Dana and Haley, did a wonderful job with entertainment. Great live music. Prices are steep, but the mules are really good! Small bar located downstairs from the always crowed Barleymash. You have to enter into Barleymash and then take the stairs down. Just a few seats located at the bar and some lounge seating (chairs and sofas). The place must max out at 50 or so people. The security people on Saturday nights are very unprofessional and borderline discriminative. We got denied in because my two friends, Italian natives visiting SD, were speaking Italian and the guy who carded us felt it was right to say that they were intoxicated because of the way he heard them speaking (Italian! and a basic English if anything). We tried to explain that they were foreigners so if he asked them something they might have not understood or they might have had a problem expressing themselves in a non-native language, but he just shook us off and that was it. The other security guys, including the manager supposed to be called Ralph, then pushed us away and instead of explaining the situation, maybe even apologizing for the inappropriate way their colleague at the front door - voluntarily or not- came off to us, told us that we were just intoxicated and we would have been better off at Hooters! They didn't know how to handle the situation professionally since the beginning, so they figured to stick together and abusing of their "security" power. Moreover, after we clearly were irritated by such attitude, they kept picking at us so that we eventually would give them a reason to call the police. I get the fact that we had a couple of glasses of wine each while having dinner so we were not 100% sober, I get the fact that maybe because of that he felt we (3 girls and 2 guys all properly dressed and just trying to have a good time) were not sober enough to get in (although I doubt all the people that were at the bar that night were completely sober! ), but I don't excuse the inappropriate and unprofessional manners that they used to make such judgments and being disrespectful, regardless of how "intoxicated" a person could be or not. That was just not right, and if I ever owned a bar in the future I will make sure that who deals with the consumers face to face won't have an attitude that will stir away more than just those 5 people's business. read more

Ohhhhh Ginger, you never disappoint! I have been here MANY times and have always enjoyed myself. It is a much more chill, lounge environment compared to the hustle and bustle upstairs, but that's part of the beauty of it! I love that they usually have some kind of entertainment down there. My all-time favorite was Danny Morgan!!!! The guy was freaking HILARIOUS!!!!!! I have been trying to track him down so I could see him perform again but I have not had any luck.
