My friend and I sat next to a faux fireplace, where we were greeted by the only bartender working and placed our order. Once he opened the tab, it was disappointing that he never came back to check if we wanted another drink. It wasn't super busy on the Monday we went, but since he was the only one manning the bar, the bartender was always doing something, so I don't blame him fully for not checking back in with us. I ordered a drink called the Velvet Vice. It looked nothing like the picture and tasted similar to an Aviation cocktail with egg whites. I happened to really like it. I enjoyed the potatoes that accompanied it as well. The Buttermilk Pancakes meal was a failure though. The pancakes were gooey inside. My server, Amy, offered to have them remade, but I declined the offer. So I accepted a parfait, which was easily one of the best I've had in Austin. During our visit, we learned that the longtime bartender had recently moved on and been replaced by Sydney, who was absolutely delightful. When she discovered we were celebrating my friend's birthday, she rallied everyone at the bar and throughout the lounge area to sing "Happy Birthday." The gesture was unexpected, heartfelt, and instantly made the evening feel special. As fate would have it, another guest was celebrating a birthday as well, so the entire group enthusiastically sang for her too. The bar clearly has a loyal following, as several regulars were gathered throughout the evening...a testament to the welcoming atmosphere that keeps people coming back. The hotel has a contemporary modern feel which is also reflected in the bar. When we first arrived, it wasn't too busy, but it picked up as the night went on. Chris was behind the bar that evening. He provided some good recommendations on cocktails. I was surprised to see the number of cocktails on the menu. I decided to go with the Freshen Up while my friend went with the Thin Mint Cookie. My drink had cucumber syrup in it. I'm a sucker for cucumber so I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, I didn't care for this drink. It was so mint forward from the creme de mint that it over powered the drink. I felt like I was drinking mouthwash. My friend enjoyed her drink and said it tasted like a Thin Mint Girl Scout cookie in a glass. Though I didn't care for my cocktail, it wouldn't stop me from returning to try a different drink. The area is huge, with plenty of tables and space to mingle. If I could give more than 5 stars I would because of what happened afterward. I forgot a very sentimental purse there. I called as soon as we got home and the manager, Vannessa, stayed in touch with me over text, coordinating with the staff and cleaning crew to track it down. Weeks went by and just this morning I got a text that she had found it. It's in the mail on the way home. I'm so touched by this gesture and will be sure to visit again when we are back in Austin.
