First off this was the first time in a couple of years I have been her. Went many times as a student and a few times since. Good news is the service and food were great!! Bad news is that it is a good thing I am not a student anymore because it cost $45 for myself and my two children to eat!! Large cheese dip was almost $9. The times we live in I guess!! This edition of Excited about Eating takes us to Dos Amigos, a neighborhood restaurant in Boone, NC, serving authentic Mexican cuisine. This place always seems to be really busy so we decided to give it a try. Dora here. We've passed by this place a gazillion times because it's sandwiched between our favorite pizza place (Capone's) and our favorite coffee shop (Higher Grounds). The exterior doesn't really scream, "Come in!" But, inside, it's quiet, the music soft rather than blaring, and I appreciated the ample room between tables. Now I always like menus with pictures of the food, so when I saw the picture of the Street Corn, I knew I had to try it for our appetizer. The corn was tender, slathered with mayonnaise and dusted with cheese, and a perfect way to start a meal. Dora here. I could eat this corn every night of the week. Sweet. Buttery. Delicious. For my lunch, I chose the Taco Salad. Loaded with ground beef and fresh ingredients like lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and sour cream, and served in a crispy flour tortilla shell. Very good, and I would definitely order it again. Dora here. I always love hearing the sizzle of chicken fajitas as they're delivered to the table. Can you see the steam rising up? Yum! Loaded with chicken, light on the veggies (which is always a plus for me!), and subtle, not overpowering, flavors. We just found our new go-to for Mexican food in Boone. What about you? I haven't been to this restaurant for about 3 years ago, but from what I remember it was great food and service. Unfortunately I can't say the same for this visit. It wasn't busy for a Saturday mid afternoon. There were plenty of seat available. Several staff walked by while we waited and failed to acknowledge our existence. After more than 10 minutes of waiting by the host booth we were finally seated. 4 in our group and we were seating in the big circle table. We were given one chips and one salsa. We asked for another basket and salsa which came much later. Our waitress was far from being attentive. Kept forgetting to bring things we asked for; hot sauce, drink refills and at one time filled water into my cup of sprite. There is much more I could say but you get the idea. The food was nothing impressive and the service was nothing to talk about. Won't be returning and if you are looking to have a nice meal out, try another place, I know I will. read more

Pretty solid choice for Mexican food depending on what you order. The lunch specials are cheap and hearty, and dinner combos are also reasonably priced. If you come at the right time the chips are piping hot, so add salt right when they hit the table. Salsa is standard and has a little heat to it but nothing out of the ordinary. Waitstaff do a fantastic job of getting your food and drinks out fast with a welcoming smile. Dos is great for accommodating families with children and large groups. They have a strong take out business and usually get to-go orders correct. I always get a chile relleno anytime I eat Mexican. Theirs is a simple poblano filled with queso sauce and it comes with red sauce as well. Kinda lacking but the temperature was hot and, the pepper was nice and spicy. My soft chicken taco was soggy and dry at the same time. Maybe when it's busier the chicken might be more tender and fresh? read more

My mom and I've been coming here for a couple of years now and are never disappointed. Chili Verde is AMAZING, one of the best I've ever had (having grown up in CA), Elota is a perfect starter, and the green salsa is a must as well. I've been to a lot of Mexican restaurants, but the food I ordered and the display of it, completely shut off my mood to eat. I ordered Torta de pastor, but it looks like they dropped a bowl of sauce and made the bread all soggy. At least the fries were good. I love food, but this was just a horrible experience. I was very pleased with the amount of food. At times I wonder if there is a better burrito in the area and I have not found it. The chips and salsa are always perfect, the food is solid. I like the burrito California and it is the size of your stomach. The wrap is always soft and cheesy with a ton of meat. I tried the chimichangas one time and I almost wanted to not come back. Chimichangas are generally fried very light, almost fluffy with tender meats and queso cream (a waterier version). Here they are fried too hard and they are dry. If the chimi was good (the rosetta stone), I would recommend this restaurant to more people. Either way, it seems like it stands a chance. read more

Service wasn't horrible, but not good either. Our waiter was more interested in watching the World Cup than taking care of our table. I asked for the sour cream that was supposed to come with my meal and he said I was incorrect and that they don't have sour cream. I hate when I constantly have to try to make eye contact with a server to get them to help me. Service should be proactive, not reactive. The tacos al pastor I had were bland and the pineapple was cut from the hard core of the fruit, the part that is usually inedible. For $13 you get three tacos and a bland plate of rice and beans. I wish I could decline the rice and beans to bring the cost of the dish down. The salsas are not spicy and they contain a lot of sugar, which is disappointing. Who puts sugar in salsa? I won't be returning to this restaurant because there are better taco places in Boone. read more

GREAT FOOD! We were in Boone for the day, live in the Banner Elk area, and we ran across this Mexican Restaurant that was new to us. Since our favorite Mexican restaurant in Banner Elk burned down we were really Jonesing for some Mexican. Dos Amigos DID NOT let us down. The service was quick, nice and attentive. I had the lunch Chimichanga with beef tips and, unlike most I have had, it tasted like Sirloin tips. Very juicy, tender and flavorful. If I had to say one bad thing it would be that their refried beans were very runny but hell, I didn't order the refried beans with a side of Chimichanga. read more

This was a good Mexican restaurant and the staff wanted to please! It was clean, friendly and the food was good! Their tap frozen margaritas were okay...nothing fantastic. The food was very good and they are willing to make something for you if it's not the exact thing on the menu. We stayed at the Hampton Inn and were looking for where we could walk to dinner. WOW did we get lucky. We got the evening special "the Captain"- labeled a Mahi special. All I can say is it is one of THE BEST meals we have had in a long time-- Mahi... mussels... shrimp... scallops... a langostino (look it up- tastes just like lobster!)... avacado.. rice... black beans... salad. And for a price that we thought was a mistake... oh and 3.99 mixed drinks (hello Mojito) and beer on tap -- 2.50. Fabulous service. Hidden gem in a shopping mall strip! read more

If you aren't going to serve or even offer the frijoles de la olla with the tacos de la calle you need to take them off of the menu description. Also, your customers aren't stupid. Today was the second time I've been to your restaurant, ordered the tacos de la calle, and been given rice and refried beans. Today was the second time I was given rice and refried beans and was lied to by your staff saying that the tacos de la calle only came with rice and beans. This time I took a picture of the menu description. The waitress told me that frijoles de la olla were actually black beans and and asked if I wanted those. I've had your frijoles negros and your frijoles de la calle. They are both wonderful. Dos Amigos, you have the absolute best hispanic food in Boone. Your menu is amazing and so are your cooks, but I feel cheated, lied to, and treated like a fool. If it happens again I'll just have to start going back to Los. This is one of Boone's nicest Mexican restaurants, located near the movie theatre, so you can easily navigate "dinner and a movie." The restaurant has been renovated recently -- it's clean and well operated. Service is excellent with a reasonable wait. I enjoyed Chicken Fajitas, a very generous, tasty dish with lots of tender chicken and a few vegetables cooked right in the dish. Tortilla's and chips are served with the meal. We arrived in town on Easter Sunday so not many places were open. We selected the plaza because it was across the road from our hotel. Then we selected the restaurant because there were people milling around - whether they had great food or one of the few that were open, we don't know. But we were hungry so went in. This place had only 3 stars and I would normally choose another place. Upon reading the reviews it seemed like service was the big hang up and since I wanted it to go and it was close to my hotel, I gave it a shot. Their website was not working so I couldn't get their number to call in an order so I drove over. The place was busy but no problems getting my dinner to go. The cashier explained to me that there were multiple locations and a recent divorce and separation of assets is what caused the website malfunction. The food was decent (nothing to rave about) and plenty of it. I can see why they have only 3 stars but in my opinion I'd go back and thus the 4 star rating. read more

What a strange experience. Our waitress kept putting food and drinks down at the end of the table as opposed to placing the items in front of the person they were intended for. It was like we were serving ourselves. I give the service one star. The food was pretty good, though. They give you a variety of like five sauces/salsas and they were yummy. My friend and I got into town and wanted chips and margs. We stayed at a hotel literally across the road so decided to try out Dos Amigos. The staff was friendly and attentive. I rated this place 2 stars because as mentioned before, I had one mission when entering this restaurant, margs! We ordered a pitcher and you might as well have handed me sour mix. We didn't even finish the pitcher. If you can't get a margarita right in a Mexican restaurant I wouldn't even trust the food. The following day for my birthday I decided to try Puerta Neuva next to the wal-Mart and I must say, everything there was good. I cannot rate this restaurant on food but as previously mentioned, after the experience, I don't think I would give them that opportunity. read more

Don't go here... I'm not sure how they call this Mexican food. My tacos were nothing more than store-bought hard shell tortillas filled with unseasoned ground beef with some lettuce and jack cheese. ZERO flavor! The rice was flavorless, as were the beans. My husband had a chicken taco and there was absolutely no seasoning on the chicken either. The "salsa" was not much more than thickened tomato juice with no flavor. We had to ask for a bottle of Tapatio to try to spice it up a little bit. We are from California and have a large Mexican population in our town. I know that cooking is regional, and maybe they have just adapted their style to North Carolina likes? THIS IS NOT A GOOD PLACE TO GO TO!!!! Literally my boyfriend asked for a daiquiri and he is 21, they proceeded to check his ID 3 times and kept bending it. Wife and I were craving Mexican while visiting Boone. Came upon this place. I was happy to see Tortilla soup on the menu and my wife ordered a combo of chicken burrito, chicken tamale and beef enchilada. What a disappointment- though my soup was steamy hot and was presented with half Avocado and strips of fried tortilla, it appeared that the soup stock was hastily microwaved and chunks of zucchini, carrots and chopped onions were thrown in as they were still hard. Chicken pieces were not succulent and soft but hard and readily microwaved from cold storage to my bowl of soup. Either they don't have a clue about the taste of a good tortilla soup or just care-less. My wife offered to share her piping hot food with me but when I reached the middle of the burrito I immediately felt my fork cutting into cold chicken. Clearly microwaved from cold storage to inside the burrito. Only saving grace, the enchilada souse was tasty which made her dinner edible since all three items were smothered in the sauce. This place is in business simply for being cheap and has less competition. read more

I am new to Boone just visiting and I came into Dos Amigos to place a To go order I stood in line for 10 minutes and three waiter/ waitresses came by and I told them I just wanted to place a to go order. They just nodded at me and walked off. No direction on what to do or where to go to place my order. I went up to the register to complain and the gentleman said he would take it but it would take 20 min. It would have been nice to not have been blown off by staff and told I needed to go to the register to order. I gave them two stars because I am hoping the food is better than the service. read more

I follow a Locarb diet so Mexican food is rather limited. I ordered the Chihuahua Steak and it is delicious. My husband ordered the California burrito and that is very good too . My meal came with a salad that had lettuce cheese , red and yellow peppers and what I think was zucchini plus some other things. There was no overpowered salad dressing an had a very different taste than usual. I really enjoyed it.service is very prompt and the food comes out quickly. We like this place over the others in town but they don't have shrimp fajitas which is another if my favorites. (I bring my own Locarb tacos for that meal) read more
