Only good vibes here! This was our first time at this Houston landmark that I had only driven past for decades, I wish we had come sooner! All staff was warm and welcoming. The place was packed at 2pm Sunday but we only had to wait about 10min for party of 2. My kiddo and I shared the Breakfast Feast with a side of fruit, which was plenty for 2! She focused most on the pancakes which we upgraded from plain to strawberry and she, a pancake connoisseur, gave them an emphatic chef's kiss. The fruit was super fresh and some of the best melon, they know to choose them! The eggs and breakfast meat were standard fare but hit the spot. The hashbrowns were more like skillet potatoes with onion and I hope I'm not underselling be we thought they were delicious. Next time I'll be sure to try the biscuits, which many other tables had. Going to try to be fair and not give this one star. My major complaint is the lack of responsible security of the parking lot. We had rented a car that did not have Texas plates and in the time we were in the restaurant, the car got broken into. The security guard said this to us: if you come here with a out of town license plate, your car will get broken into. What is more frustrating was the security person was unable to tell us any information to help us give to the police. How is it that you can see the car being broken into, the thieves, running away but not see even the color of the car they got into? Now a review of the food: the food is not spectacular but will definitely fill you up. Plates are large and service is good. The coffee is not the greatest, but I don't think people go there for the coffee. I think they go there for the large portions of food. They have a lunch and dinner special that allows you to get a nice plate of food for a decent price but you can certainly order something off the menu. Desserts are large and tasty. Bathrooms are small, which is something I don't like and there is a table that sits right outside and close to the bathrooms, which I think is yucky. We ubered around 8pm from the Marriott Airport $12 The restaurant is adorable vintage. The hostess took our name, stated a 10-15 minute wait. It took maybe 4 min for us to get a comfortable spacious booth We were a party of 2 and I was pleasantly surprised we landed prime real estate (4 + person booth) due to the busyness of the restaurant. (No open tables) I figured we would be passed over and seated at a two top table to make room for a larger party Immediately We were greeted by an enthusiastic friendly server. I wish I got his name because he was amazing, happy , and loved sharing all the inside info of the menu I took his advice and ordered the chicken fried chicken breast with COUNTRY style gravy. He suggested the carrot and red beans and rice for sides. OMG it was a meal I could not ever find back home in Calif nor could I create on my own. It was out of this world delicious. The chicken was moist and juicy. The gravy was true county style and seasoned perfectly The carrots were sweet and tender and the red beans and rice on its own could have been a main dish. They packed a little punch of spice but had a wonderful southern flavor. Our server totally got it right and had my number dialed in when declared I wanted something of a signature dish and unique to me. He checked back on us several times making sure we were doing well and inquiring If we wanted dessert . I wish I left room for dessert, but after finishing up every last bite of my very large portioned meal there was no way I could order dessert. Anyway I plan on retuning if ever back in Houston. We've eaten here several times, we've always had good service and food. Last two experiences were very disappointing. Food was extremely lacking and the wait staff seemed disinterested and somewhat rude. Had a waitress slam a coffee carafe on our table after having to request refills 3 times. However, the inside was a bit too loud for my liking and it was difficult to hold a conversation without having to basically yell across the table. Not the best ambiance if you're looking for something more relaxed. Used to come here often as a student at UH. I frequently fly back to visit my grandma. The chicken fried steak tastes the same and is still as homey as ever. Open 24hours so you can stop by any time of day to get your southern food fix. The wait is never long. Came here after traveling back in town. When we arrived, we walked in at the same time as a family of five. We placed our order only to wait for ages. We started to wonder what the heck was going on as the family of five had their food and were boxing it up yet we still did not have any food. The waitress was apologetic after realizing it had been so long and insisted on offering us an appetizer we didn't want. We obliged, but honestly just wanted our order. By the time the appetizer arrived the other family had left. The waitress continued to say it would be taken care of. The manager stopped by and apologized, advised they had equipment go down in the kitchen, and advised she was taking care of our ticket. We didn't know what that meant until the check arrived. All that was "taken care of" was offering the appetizer we didn't want in the first place, complimentary. Sorry, that is inexcusable and not in anyway making it right. Garbage service. It gave an old diner feel. It was around midnight. The restaurant wasn't packed. There so many awesome choices on the menu. We could not really make up our minds. Our waitress was very helpful and made quite a few suggestions. We ordered the Grand Prix, biscuits and gravy, and the Philly Steak and Cheese Sandwich (comes with chips) but upgraded to fries. There was an up-charge for a lil bit of everything. Our food didn't take long to come out. We did get the biscuits and gravy as an appetizer but it was cold. The waitress was good about rectifying that. When she brought us another set it didn't have as much gravy on it as the first one. The pancakes were delicious but so big. Man I really can't complain about Dot Coffee Shop. Maybe the wait time of 30 minutes? But I came on Saturday morning so what did I expect? Needless to say, Dot Coffee Shop is a place I always try to go to when I'm in that neck of the woods. First, for a 24/7 restaurant, Dot is remarkably clean and comfortable. The facility itself does not have that grime or 'ran down' feel, but the staff actually looks like they care about their jobs. Amazing. Secondly, the food selection is awesome. Quantity of food is amazing and quality/consistency is stellar. Really what is there to complain about? If you order regular coffee, they give you an entire personal pitcher to drink to get wired off of. I ordered the smothered porkchops with eggs and elected to get the 'smothered' part on the side. Even with onion and mushrooms on top of the chops, it was absolutely tasty. Man I'm still thinking about the meal right now. A staple diner that has a great atmosphere and even better food. Anytime I'm on the East side, I try to stop here for a meal because it's just so good! My favorite time is obviously for brunch, but be warned, the wait can get pretty gnarly on the weekends for brunch. It is worth the wait though! Dot cafe, part of the Pappas family is a casual diner style restaurant that does breakfast and brunch so well! I'm not even sure where to start on my recommendations! I always love getting the rolls- they do have a nominal cost associated with them now, but it is so worth it! The warm soft buttery rolls come out piping hot and waiting to be devoured. I also tried the fried mushrooms and fried pickles this time and they were definitely a hit. I personally preferred the fried mushrooms, but our table was split in their votes. The ranch that comes with it also tastes house made, which just makes the appetizer all the better! This time, I was craving French toast, so went for the Paris Grand Prix, which comes with 2 thick slices of French toast, 2 eggs, 2 sausage links, and 2 strips of bacon, although I swapped by bacon for some hash. It was so good but I could barely finish it. A few other dishes that looked great and I would recommend would be their omelette because it's gigantic and so worth it! The patty melt and the fried catfish was a hit as well. They're also know for their chicken fried chicken and chicken fried steak which is delicious. The food was not the big deal. The server had to constantly be sent for because of over-looked requests and the hostess then began to ignore us after several attempts at summoning her (very audibly, but not indignant). This past Saturday around 8am I went here with my daughters and after waiting about 10 minutes seeing that the waitress was busy, I was finally told that it'd be a 10 minutes wait. There were seats available yet we could not get any of those. Added context is that there appeared to be only her working as the only waitress and the two cooks. What really pissed me off is that before coming to tell me that there would be at least a 10 minute wait, she passed by the food pickup area and joked with oneof the cooks saying "they better go to Denny's". I've been a consistent customer and even with large groups. Poor customer service! There are way too many good non-mainstream for a business to treat customers like this. read more

As far back as I can remember, Dot Coffee Shop has been in this location. It is one of the OGs of the Pappas empire. I grew up close to this area and took some classes at HCC across the highway. I've visited for all the meals, especially late night eats after a night out. Almost every time I have come, there has been a wait, but it typically moves quick depending on what time of the day you come. The food is pretty consistent. Nothing to write home about. I think it is a step up from those other 24 hours diner spots. One thing that sets this place apart if the huge portions. As of late, the times I have come, they are always out of items. Specifically one night, they were seating people and naming a long list of things they did not have. We politely excused ourselves and went to another place and they were totally understanding and even encouraged it. I know businesses are still suffering with some supply issues so it is what it is. Since I have been coming here for so long and the good outweighs the bad, I will probably end up here late at night again at some point. read more

Never been or heard of Dot before. It looks really old and has an old school diner look similar to House of Pies. Ordered the breakfast sandwich and loved it! It came with a big side of hashbrowns. Loved the crispness and it already had salt. The sandwich was very delicious. The eggs were scrambled to my perfection. 5/5 Also had the fried mushrooms (comes with a housemade ranch) and cheesesticks. The mushrooms were ok. Tasted better with ranch. Dot Coffee Shop was the perfect spot to hit up for a late night food run. We were pretty disappointed to learn that most of the restaurants advertising late bites had closed kitchens by the time we arrived to Houston. Luckily the 24/7 Dots was there for us. They put you on a text notification system so your position is nicely queued which allows you to wait in your car or outside. Once seated it reminded me of a Denny's back in the day. Ample booth seating and traditional diner ambiance. They played old crooner music on the system so that takes the nostalgia up a bit. The crowd is very diverse which lets you know this place is well established amongst Houstonians. Wanting to try a little bit of everything, we opted for the Breakfast Feast. This plate had it all -- fluffy pancakes, hash browns, bacon, sausage, ham and eggs. Oh, boy! My eggs over easy were cooked to perfection. The pancakes were like perfectly round cake clouds and I'm still trying to figure out if I liked the sausage or bacon more. It was all really tasty. For roughly $20 after the cost of OJ and a huge food serving, we were stuffed and had plenty to take home. Not a bad place to go at all after a night of drinking. It's a bit out of the way from your downtown/midtown joints, but it's not that far of a drive/uber ride. The wait, if there's a wait, isn't too long in comparison to your typical house of pies; and the food is decent. The last time I came in (Sunday night on July 4th weekend), there was a 15-minutes wait even though there was a lot of open tables, but I guess they were short on staff? Anyway, the wait ended up being less than 5 minutes so it wasn't too long of a wait. Service is typical of what you can expect at a diner like this. I patronized Dot on 8/17/24 to a nearly empty establishment. The greeter informed of a 15 minute wait time to which I replied "Uh, what?" The place was nearly empty with no visible line. She started negotiating down to finally "Well maybe 5 or 8 minutes." I wasn't gonna stand around for 5 or 8 minutes in a mostly empty diner and told her "We ain't seeing things the same way here lady." and I turned around and left. Call me Mr. Grumpy. So, post-Covid, it is harder to get staff but that's their problem. My attitude is very simple: "I pay they serve." It still has that nostalgic feeling despite the renovations made. After Pappas bought this place, it was nice that they kept some of the original setup and original decor. The wait time depends on when you stop by. I've been by and had zero wait time and other times, it's about an hour wait time. Usually, whenever the Astros play, this place gets packed with Astros Fans! They do have a few TVs set up so that you can catch whatever sports are on. And I don't care what you order, you are going to get a big healthy Texas-size portion! On this particular visit, we brought our daughter since she was home from college and said she was quite hungry. (no surprise there) So she ordered a cheeseburger and fries with a Coke float and said it was the best she had ever had! The hamburger patty was flavorful and seasoned well and cooked to perfection.
