We have been going to this Kelly's for so many years. And we have given them at least 7 more try's after several mistakes in their part. We get disappointed but keep hoping for the best. But every single time, every single meal, at different times of day. The meals are very salty! For example the grilled fish, mashed potatoes, green beans, and gravy. The gravy has been literally water at times. The steak has been over cooked when we tell them medium rare but more rare. There isn't much that you can't find on their menu and the fact that the meals come with three sides AND you get your choice of rolls or cornbread, before your meal are big bonuses! Consistency is key! Kelley's has been doing right by the community since before I was born. I've been plenty of times but most recently stopped by for a to-go plate to scratch that "breakfast for dinner" itch. The Kelley family delivered as usual with a tasty plate of breakfast favorites that hit the spot. Breakfast is served all day but they have a full lunch menu and daily specials as well. This is definitely a good place to take a picky eater! I haven't been able to pry my eyes away from the breakfast menu, but I've heard people sing their praises in regard to the lunch menu as well. There are plenty of seats and plenty of parking at the restaurant, and the staff works hard to keep the tables clean and provide good service. There are sound reasons that Kelley's is always busy. The food tastes very good, it's inexpensive, has attentive table service and it's identity as a Houston staple with all of the local pictures on the wall. I had lunch here last Sunday after a visit to Ellington Field. I could tell from all of the cars in their parking lot that it was busy but even after entering I only waited about 2 minutes before being seated. This is a big "Texas" sized restaurant inside and I'll bet that they employ 10 waiters/waitresses at a time. From the very large menu that has about everything you would want on it (B,L,D), I ordered beef tips over noodles with sides of cornbread dressing, green beans and broccoli and cheese casserole for $9.99. Yeah, I said $9.99! First to come out was a bread basket consisting of a roll and cornbread. The roll was soft and the cornbread warm with a hint of sweetness. Yum! Less than 10 minutes later the meal arrived. Wow! What a plate of food. Seriously, this was easily enough for two people so my first thought was getting a to go box which I did. Everything was very good in taste. The beef tips were tender in a dark and rich tasting gravy over the soft noodles. The 3 sides were all delicious too. The cooks in the kitchen do follow the rules to justify the name of this place where it says Country Cookin'. When finished, I was stuffed, happy and had a to go box for another meal back at home. We were both super hungry and ordered not long after we received our drinks. We got one of the daily specials which was the chicken fried steak and chose Mac & cheese, fried okra, and buttered corn as our sides. I told our waiter we would order that first since we were super hungry and maybe get something else. She said the food would be out quickly and also brought out a basket of rolls and cornbread. Carb heaven! The cornbread and rolls were both warm and delicious. Our food came out fast, like the waitress had shared. Between the two of us, we couldn't finish the plate. Portions are massive, food was tasty, and we had really friendly service. With all of the Cracker Barrel controversy, I was looking for one nearby the area that I was in and found a place I hadn't heard of before. In the mood for some homemade food, I went with my mother after an appointment in that area. It started off promising with some yeast rolls and cornbread that had to be fresh out of the oven! Ta da! Good review stops after the delivery of some pretty great rolls and a glass of water water and a Dr Pepper. The food was wrong in so many ways! Our server quickly replaced my mom's order of pineapple chicken breast that came out as a stringy, hard piece of chicken with the chicken fried chicken. I felt since that was already such a disappointment that I should pick and make faces at my turkey and dressing. Apparently I went unnoticed and was never asked if I liked it. I decided that the dressing that was seasoned with a huge amount of sage, would be edible if simply added a bag of non seasoned breadcrumbs later at home. The turkey, wasn't sliced like you'd expect to see but it was some little chunks of what may have been broken pieces from slices on top of some gravy over goo. I wanted to like this place so badly that I remember saying aloud, "It sure isn't how Gran made hers...." As I boxed up my uneaten food to go, I thought it would maybe a good leftover meal that I could eat later with a few twerks and asked if I could get a few rolls. Sure if I pay $1. each!! I politely declined and thought how sad it was that I was boxing up a huge portion of regret and afterthought. I would have saved a lot of money if I would have just ordered a roll to start with!
