If you're a sucker for good sushi, Double Ai is the spot to hit up. They take pride in their freshness and you can see it while their chefs serve up their dishes. After coming in and taking a seat at the bar, you can see why people continue coming back. It seems like a lot of the locals see this as a neighborhood staple. They are very warm when you step in and you get greeted and seated within a timely manner. I am quite picky when it comes to sashimi and nigiri. It's hard to find a place that makes it right and while a lot of so-called sushi joints do offer sashimi and nigiri, they don't necessarily use the best cuts. I opted for their sushi boat, which is meant for a couple people but sometimes I left my eyes speak more than what my belly can actually handle. But hey, one can never have too much of some high quality raw fish cuts, right? You don't see a lot of uni at many sushi joints these days unless they have the right sushi connoisseur clientele. Coming from SoCal, we get some of the best uni locally (it even rivals or surpasses the quality one can find in Japan). Not only was the uni quite fresh but without even taking a bite yet, you can see the pride the sushi chef took in preparing it. It was well presented, cleaned well and screaming "eat me eat me" the moment you get served. When the weather is right, try to score yourself a seat right outside their patio. Not only do you get to enjoy the outdoors but the view of the river is highly coveted by many of the locals in the area. Sushi + dope river view + awesome patio deck = happy diner. I'm looking forward to the next time I'm back in the NJ/NY area as Double Ai is on my list of places to visit again. read more

I have been enjoying the full experience at double Ai for years. This family-owned restaurant does Chinese, Thai and Sushi specialties. The location is priceless: overlooking a lake and small dam, with a beautiful deck with fountain many months of the year. The sushi and sashimi are well executed and reasonably priced (considering the quality). The owner, Jeff Mar, is almost always there to greet friends (and you become a recognized friend on your second visit!) Today did not disappoint at all. Went here for the view. Food was ok.They gave us a pair of dirty tongs for our gyozas. It looked like the only cleaned the bottom part of them where you pick up the food. It had a piece of onion in the top part where you hold the tongs. I tossed them aside and used my fork instead. At least that looked clean enough to eat with. The staff was nice and service was fast. Have been wanting to try this place for over a year and had high expectations and they EXCEEDED in every area - from ambiance (outdoor deck is just perfect), food, and service. A great selection of different apps rolls, and entrees - the food is prepared so well and it is SO FRESH. I love that it's a BYOB, too! We will definitely be back... I couldn't stop saying how amazing and delicious it was with every single bite. I'm super confused why this place has a 4 star rating. That was possibly the worst Chinese food I've had. The general chicken was so bland- didn't taste like anything but unseasoned chicken with caked on dough and fried. Literally. I ordered the shrimp fried rice and that was mediocre. Haven't had a Chinese food fix in a while since no one else in my household is a fan. On the plus side the turnaround was fast - I live less than 3 miles away. They did charge a $3 gas charge and just under $2 tax and I gave $4 tip. All in all- not worth it. Disappointed with the experience. read more

Ambiance/Decor/Atmosphere: Attractive dark wood tones with stone facade walls. Hate to say it but the decor feels like an Asian Bistro. Attractive overall with the outdoor deck lake side seating. Too bad it wasn't warm enough for us to dine outdoors. Noise/sound level: Seems to be pretty popular so there will be more than an average amount of customers at Double Ai. Sound level isn't out of the ordinary so you'll be able to converse with your fellow dining guests. Menu: Slightly large consisting of Chinese, Japanese, and Thai, but some items are unique and never seen anywhere else, or hard to get items like black pepper chicken, beef.....like so. Service: Ticket times were sluggish as hell but the wait staff was very friendly, polite, and knowledgeable. Food: Overall cook on the food was very good. Portion size was larger than expected, what you usually get from an Americanized Chinese restaurant doesn't compare. Egg roll was like twice the size. We ordered black pepper chicken and shrimp, Thai special fried rice, gyoza, shrimp lo mein, and Garfield roll. Overall the food was pretty good, presented well without issues. Bar: BYOB Price: Price is acceptable, not too high considering the portion size and flavor quality. Overall: A very nice Asian Bistro that has me wanting to live closer to Double AI. Came here yesterday afternoon for their lunch specials. I was very much impressed with the beautiful view this restaurant has to offer. The restaurant is situated on the Pompton Lake and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Although it was a bit warm outside, we decided to take our chances and sit outside to really take in the view. All of the tables have umbrellas that provide enough shade to keep you comfortable and depending on the day, you may get a nice breeze to cool you off a bit more. For lunch, I ordered the 2 roll option which also comes with soup and salad - most lunch specials will only give you one or the other so I was pretty impressed by being able to have both options. Sushi was fresh and they were very accommodating. I ordered a salmon avocado roll and spicy crab meat roll. My friend wanted one of her rolls wrapped in cucumber and they were able to fulfill her request, but of course with a fee ($3). The waitstaff was very attentive, however not many of them speak English fluently making communication a bit difficult. Regardless, I would definitely visit this restaurant again and hopefully after reading my review you will give this place a shot! I would highly recommend coming here on a date as the view lends itself to a romantic vibe. read more

Super unhappy by this place and very confused by the great reviews. After not being attended to for 15 minutes after being seated we were already disappointed. However we stuck around and once the sweet but clueless teenage girl waitress finally came we had high hopes. Appetizers were mediocre at best, orange chicken was slimy and lo mein was just not good. Worst of all, the sushi was full of the panko crunchy stuff, rather than fish. The prices are not justifiable to be receiving supermarket quality sushi smothered in breadcrumbs. Also, how can they charge for water? How is it the customer's problem if their tap water does not meet drinking standards... they have to supply suitable drinking water for their guests free of charge. Disappointed is an understatement. Pros: my sushi was excellent (Double Ai Special roll), our server was very nice, BYOB, sitting outside right on the water Cons: Waitress had too many tables so service was slow, seafood dish was overly saucy. The worst part - the chicken teriyaki looked like Purdue shortcuts (fake grill lines and all) soaked in sauce over mostly onions. I feel like this place has a lot of potential...just stick to the apps and sushi...and maybe seafood dishes but light on the sauce. read more

So this place has a million dollar view for a great price! Their outdoor deck facing the lake is a rare attribute and honestly, it'll keep me coming back. The service was really great and it's BYOB. Regarding the food, it is pretty decadent but don't expect anything to blow your socks off. They do good food, great service, with a hell of a view. I think they know their crowd and they do what they do well. Worth the trip if you appreciate some, 'man i need to hit the gym' style Chinese food once in awhile! Came here on a recommendation and thought it was pretty good but nothing I would brag about. They have a nice selection of specialty rolls, which I appreciate. Nothing is worse than a weak specialty roll list, so Double Ai does not disappoint in that category. I think the sushi itself is fresh and presented nicely. One roll I ordered was the flower roll and the dish came with a pretty flower on it, nice touch. I also ordered Chinese cuisine on another visit (which is nice if you aren't in the mood for sushi) and found it to be decent and plentiful with the chicken, although very skimpy with the side of broccoli that I ordered and paid extra for. The reason for the three stars is mainly due to the bad service and overall cleanliness on the inside of the restaurant. We sat in a seat with a window view, pretty views of the lake (would be especially nice during the fall months I would imagine) but what really killed the vibe was the dead flies on the window sill. YUCK! I get it, it happens but come on, clean up the dead flies. Any waiter/waitress that cleaned up the tables prior had to of seen them, they were blatantly chilling there, all dead and crap. It was really gross, especially while eating sushi (or while eating anything for that matter). Now to the service, it is super spotty and we were left waiting for long periods at a time. If you need a drink, chopsticks, the check, anything really...you have to seriously flag someone down. No one checks in on you, ever. Double Ai has a pretty decent outside deck area with tables. We haven't sat outside yet, as its been too hot. But if they clean up the dead flies and tighten up the service, maybe I will come back and check it out in the fall. read more

I really love their food, but the service in restaurant is pretty terrible and when you have an issue with a delivery they are not accommodating. They also changed their sweet and sour chicken to literally American popcorn chicken and when I complained they refused to give me a refund or a new item without making it so complicated. Truly a weird place but I'll probably go back just because it's better than some other places in town. Just wish they had some better service. read more

The view and the location are really the only two things that make Double Ai slightly above average. Driving to this restaurant, no matter which direction you come from, is definitely very scenic and beautiful. The restaurant's placement right by the water is also very lovely. Make sure you get a seat by the window or outside if it's available. As far as the food, it's basically your average quality sushi. The hot and sour soup is decent but not particularly spicy. I ordered the Salmon Naruto roll only to find out 10 minutes later that they don't have any more cucumber. Seems like a pretty key staple ingredient to run out of so I'm not sure how that happened. Nevertheless, I substituted it for the Spicy Girl roll which, while it looked pretty, certainly was lacking in taste. It was drenched in a sauce that was so sweet that it took away from the rest of the roll. I wasn't very impressed by it and found it very difficult to finish it. Communication with our waitress was a bit difficult as she barely spoke English and didn't really make the effort to get assistance from any of the waitstaff. We weren't in a rush or anything but it was just annoying having to wait so much extra time due to miscommunication. Overall, I guess the place was fine but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again. read more
