Stopped in before an evening show at the Academy of Music and had an excellent dinner with some friends. I had attempted to book a reservation but wasn't able to find one, so I marked the "Notify Me" button and planned to utilize the walk-in upstairs seating if nothing came up. Luckily, we received a call the day and were able to book our table in the main dining room downstairs. After being led down a staircase and through a few hallways, we were seated at a candlelit table in a dim room, which gave a sort of secretive vibe. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive and guided us through the menu, reassuring us that even with our tight schedule we could order the 10-dish tasting menu and still make it to our show (which started two hours after our reservation time). Given their extensive menu of offerings, we decided to let the chef make our decisions for us and we were not disappointed, especially since they asked for our preferences and easily accommodated our preference for seafood-leaning proteins and the need for gluten-free options for one of my friends. The only decision I had to make was to order the Zeppelin Blend cocktail, a fruity tequila option with togarashi on the rim, which paired nicely with my meal. Otherwise, we were treated to an absolute feast of Japanese cuisine, kicking off with the Tuna Rice Cracker, which may have been the highlight of the evening for me with its crispy rice and perfect seasoned tuna. A close second was the Crispy Tofu with miso caramel. I also loved the Edamame Dumpling, and would note that we also got to sample the Spicy Baked Scallop and Crab which was brought out as the gluten-free substitution for my friend. My favorite Robatayaki was the Salmon Scallion. Our server caught our "Happy Birthday" cheers at the beginning of the meal and made sure to bring a beautiful sparkler with my friend's dessert --- a nice touch that we didn't even have to arrange. All items were served at a good pace to make good on our server's promise: we were in our seats (with full bellies) by showtime, and I have no doubt that the $68pp price tag is a steal for the amount and quality of food we were served. Hands down, this place has to be at least 80 or 90% of why we're falling in love with Philly. Food is so good! Great staff every time we've gone and who in the world would have thought that miso and soft serve was a good combination but my goodness is it amazing! If you like salted caramel that dessert will be a dream for you! We did the 10 course experience again and it was both a wonderful experience and a very delicious meal. Surprisingly the thing I like the least was the wagyu dumplings. It's not that they were bad they just failed in comparison to the yellowtail dish that came out before. The short ribs and the my talking mushrooms were stupendous, but they came out in close order so we were able to pair them together and oh my God what a culinary delight! We won't be in Philly every week but double knot is one place that were both always happy to visit again. They went to another restaurant that had the dark lighting but the vibe just didn't compare. The staff - incredibly accommodating and a pleasure to be around. The vibes - borderline too dark, especially when walking in and going down numerous flights of stairs. They do have the speakeasy vibe down pat. Unfortunately, the most unpleasant garbage smell from the open door to outside in the back hits you on the stairs to/from your dining area and it was incredibly off putting. The food - most dishes in my tasting were delicious and nearly everything was cooked perfectly or was very fresh if served raw (I did find the cooked salmon too dry although it could just be the type of salmon itself); however, some of the skewers and the rice had an imbalance of salt (some too much and others too little). For a tasting, the portions for the foods brought out later were meals on their own and way too big but definitely value for your $ and kudos that they can make an all GF tasting menu as well as for the really good pairings of flavor throughout. read more

Double Knot has been on my radar for a while, so when a friend was looking for a unique omakase experience, I knew we had to go there. From the moment we stepped into the restaurant, we were wowed by the decoration of the place. The ambience was definitely a blend of a hip casual vibe with a touch of elegance through the use of dimmed lighting. A short walk into the downstairs portion felt like an exploration into the hidden speakeasy behind closed doors. As others mentioned, the romantic lighting of the place might present a vision test when it comes to seeing fine prints of the menu. DK might need to invest in some tablets to help its diners in seeing their menu better as a suggestion. At Double Knot, omakase is not limited to only sushi and nigiri but more like a tasting menu consisting of 10 dishes over 4 courses. The selections were pretty extensive and covers dishes of all sorts, both hot and cold. Our waiter, Jay, was marvelous enough to provide us with guidance on which selections to choose from. He was also patient and knew to give us space when my friend had to hurriedly answer her phone a couple of times while he was providing us with helpful tips. During our dinner, he was consistently attentive enough to always fill our drinks and remove the empty plates without being intrusive. That level of top-notch service complemented well with the equally top-notch dining experience at DK. At first, ordering food tapas style may appear as if it won't be enough for the diners to feel full. The pace and well orchestrated succession of food that came out quickly challenged that misconception by the time dish 6 or 7 was served. I can't recall what we ordered and what I liked the best since everything (read this word in bold and caps) was superbly crafted and delicious. We just had a few snow days in a row and were dying to get out. So our friends hit us up and wanted to meet somewhere. We met up tried a few places that were all full before settling in here. It was happy hour so we figured the four of us would just order a bunch of apps to split. That was the best idea. We got one of everything and it was awesome. Also the food came out almost immediately. It was kinda crazy. So the stand out though..... and I feel bad saying this about a Japanese restaurant was the sliders. Those little burgers were so good. I'm a big condiment guy and I would never dream of spoiling this delicious sandwich with ketchup or mayo. I can only imagine what a full burger tastes like there. It really is a shame that it's so far out of my normal stomping grounds, but I think we will have to make an exception and plan to have dinner here soon. Parking around here sucks. read more

I'm so happy that I found Double Knot while in Philly! There are two dining areas- one on the entry level floor and the other in the basement. My table was down in the basement. It's very dark and dimly lit by candles throughout the area. Great spot for a date! I opted for the omakase, so that I may try a little of everything ($68/ person). I appreciated that they allow you to build your own omakase experience versus the kitchen sending out their choice of options. Favorite items: Hamachi Carpaccio (ordered twice), Cod Fried Rice (large portion for 2- enough to take home) and the Wagyu Dumplings. One of my favorite places. We always sit at the chef's sushi counter which makes for a great date night vibe. Tonight the service was a tad slow for the one dish, but other than that the food is usually out super quick. Sushi is consistently bomb and the menu is large. Normally I say you MUST get the real wasabi as an add on, but tonight it was lacking in flavor. Not sure why. Now for the specifics: The crispy tofu was so flavorful and economical for the amount you get! Octopus was phenomenally cooked. I'll be honest, I expected a bit more from the chefs tasting menu as all 8 guys left hungry, even with the +$10 menu and the waitress assuring us we'd leave full. The food was all good, highlights being kobe beef skewers and the duck scrapple bao. Some things were just ok, but overall tasty food. The courses were served way too quickly in my opinion and didn't allow us time to know what things were or talk amongst ourselves about what we thought. Such a great time!! This is a unique spot that shares space with 2 other restaurant/bars. Food was excellent! Cocktails were delightful! Service was superb! My friend and I sat at the bar, the best spot in the house. Front row seat for the amazing concoctions that had our visual sensors at peak arousal! I wish I took more images of the many drinks we tried that night. We clearly attempted to order nearly every uniquely crafted libation that peaked our fancy. The food was even better! We ordered and tasted, ordered and tasted. We definitely had leftovers between the two of us. The vibe was great and our bartender provided the best service. Despite the more than busy night, we were attended to and our cups were never empty. On another note, we were slightly sad to find out that there was actually a downstairs portion of the restaurant that we were not aware of. Came here with a friend when I was visiting Philly. We got their tasting menu which was very filling and well priced . The server was super friendly. We sat at the bar but the counter was high so we couldn't see them prep the food so maybe we would take a table next time. Everything was fresh here and our only comment was we went early when it wasn't super crowded and they pummeled all the food at us kind of feeling almost like all at once. I was so full half way through the meal and it made it uncomfortable for me to finish the food. Found this spot close to my hotel on a work trip and we were able to score a table. It was packed in there and nice, dimly lit vibes. We did the choose 10 items option and it ended up being so much food! We were worried that the portions would be tiny. Everything we had was amazing!! Except for the mushroom dumplings, which were a little salty. I even loved the crispy tofu and I'm not a big tofu person. The salmon sashimi just melted in my mouth. I'm still thinking about it. Cozy restaurant with a really appetizing menu and well izakaya style. The restaurant is dimly lit with exposed lightbulb that play into sort of vintage library vibe. There are seating options for dates and larger groups alike. It's hard for me to comment on the service since we came in relatively close to closing time as a walk in. They did keep reminding us that the kitchen closes at 9:45 and kind of rushed taking our order without explaining the menu or recommending how to order for our big group of 9. At least they were nice enough to seat us as a walk in so close to closing. The food was delicious enough for me to overlook the above. It really feels like there's a serious chef in the kitchen. I particularly liked the wagyu soup dumplings - it's so rare to find anything as juicy without pork in it. The brussel sprouts and cauliflower were excellent sides. I had the scallop entree which I would actually skip in favor of more small plates (it was a bit undercooked and one note in flavor). There are a ton more items on the menu I would have wanted to try. Overall very happy my group chose this spot for dinner. I was drawn to their Taisting Menu and was pleasantly surprised to learn that you have the option of chef's choice or selecting one from each section. You can also pay an additional $10 for the upgraded food options, which is what we did. Thanks to Yelpers, I already had my eye on some things, so we decided on the self selected option. The standouts were the Duck Scrapple Bao and the sea bass. I love a good rib eye, but this one missed the mark. A word of advice, get the upgraded tasting menu and the Duck Scrapple Bao. read more

I was walking around trying to find a place to eat and of all the places in the area, Double Knot was the only one we could get in to after a reasonable wait time. We made it in time to catch the tail end of happy hour so we started there and added on a few other things. We ordered the Chili Crisp Bao Buns, Crispy Spring Rolls, Shrimp Tempura Rolls, Robatayaki, Spicy Pork Ramen and the Broiled Seabass. Everything was mediocre to not good. The chicken in the bao buns had no flavor whatsoever. I didn't even finish mine. I didn't want to waste any food but it was so bland I couldn't bother with it. The spring rolls and tempura rolls were good. Nothing exceptional. The best thing we had was the Robatayaki. The ramen was so thick with hardly any broth. It definitely should not have been called ramen. Very weird. The seabass was the most expensive thing we ordered and flat out not good. Again, flavorless and the sauce with it was awful. It tasted like watery, oily, soy sauce. An interesting sauce to give with something that's already lacking flavor. Our server was not very nice and seemed quite impatient...borderline rude. And while headed to the restroom I asked another server what direction the bathroom was and she seemed irritated. A not so great experience at a restaurant I've heard many great things about. I came here solo and it was the perfect spot for me! It was hard to find as the signage is not prominent, but is in the main area of town on one of the busiest roads. The bar area was dark and felt like a lounge. There was a restaurant seating area on the left side of the space. It was late on a weeknight and I had no problem finding a spot at the end of the bar. The bartender was my server and I was just there to eat and not drink, which was not a problem at all. The menu has lots of Japanese items and an extensive wine and sake list, with some unique cocktails as well. It was fun to look at, but I stuck to just food and got the spicy tuna hand roll, tuna tartare, and tuna rice cracker. The hand roll was great, and I could have definitely had another one, but the kitchen was closing. the tuna tartare was average, a bit too much sauce for me, and the tuna rice cracker was really good! The texture on the the rice cracker made the dish. The service was great and I would recommend this place for sushi in Center City! read more

We were visiting friends and they were very excited to take us to Double Knot (which I keep accidentally calling Top Knot.) They are a tapas style restaurant with a big menu of selections. Our friend made a reservation as soon as the date opened and we were all excited. When we arrived we were seated within 5 minutes of letting them know of our arrival. We were led downstairs in a VERY dark/almost dangerous stairwell to another seating area that also had more poorly lit stairs. I feel like the person seating guests should have flashlight or lantern (for the aesthetic) to guide people. It's way too dark! I'm in my 30's, I can't imagine someone older trying to navigate that route. Once seated our eyes adjusted a little but it was still hella dark. I get the ambiance but they could bump up the lighting a smidge and it would make the experience more pleasant. Aside from the low lighting, the place is decorated beautifully! It's definitely a vibe in there for sure. Our server greeted us and we ordered drinks. I got an espresso martini which was 5/10 on taste. It also didn't have espresso beans as a garnish which is a red flag IMO. Maybe they were just out? We debated doing the tasting menu but one of the people with us is pregnant so she would be limited on what she could eat. Since the entire table had to do it we decided to just order a variety of dishes. We ordered probably 12-15 dishes between the four of us. The food was AMAZING! Everything was superb wit the exception of the Pork Tonkatsu, it was pretty boring but everything else was *chefs kiss*. Just to give you an idea of some of the dishes we ordered: Pork Tonkatsu, Brussel Sprouts, wild mushroom gyoza, short rib (x3) robatayaki, Shishito peppers. We got another kind of dumpling that was very good as well. Our server was mediocre, we had to ask for things multiple times. We asked for sauce 3x before she finally brought it and didn't even apologize for forgetting. She did not seem very enthused to be there. Honestly, the food was the saving grace. I was kind of grumpy about the place but the food made up for the lighting and the iffy service. I was extremely disappointed with the customer service at Double Knot this Saturday night. I wish I had anything to contribute regarding the food and drinks. Right from the start, the 2 hostesses were unfriendly and had a sour attitude, making it seem like we were inconveniencing them for having them do their job. Regardless, my friend and I put our names down for the waitlist. We were told it would be a 2 hour wait, so we went walking around elsewhere in the meantime. We had no issue waiting this long, as we didn't have a reservation and know DK is a popular spot. 1 hour later, we received a text stating our table was ready. We were very happy it was ready an hour early, but because of the original estimated wait time, we had ventured away from the immediate area around the restaurant. We were surprised to see in the text message that our table would only be held for 10 minutes, as this was not explained to us when we put our names down. So, we rushed back to the restaurant, and arrived there exactly 14 minutes after receiving the text message. When we spoke with the same hostesses, they snarkily said our table was given away because 10 minutes had passed and refused to seat us or even pretend to make an attempt to find us another table. I understand we were a little late, but I don't think 4 minutes is egregiously late. Our tardiness was due to the large disconnect between the estimated and actual wait times, plus we were not informed of the militantly strict 10 minute grace period. If we had know this policy was so inflexible, we would have been better prepared. I have never encountered a restaurant with such poor customer service where they turn customers who are willing to spend money away for being 4 minutes late. It is extremely disappointing how this establishment is run; the hostesses acted like they were working at the hottest club in Philly and couldn't wait to reject you. read more

We were given our check and the waitress forgot about us but it was too late since the kitchen closed! I came with some friends and we each got a side and a sushi roll, more or less. The Wild Mushroom Gyoza had a strong ginger taste with a touch of truffle all swimming in a ponzu sauce. It was divine! The eel avocado sushi was good too. I think the eel was warm which was a bit off putting but the flavors were good. I guess between the rice, eel and avocado, there was no crunch element which doesn't have anything to do with the dish itself but I was craving maybe something different! There's a wide selection of foods that are served. This is one of those places where it's a japanese western fusion that is very overpriced and does not really maintain the traditional flavors. Nothing really stood out as great to me and overall the flavors were extremely salty though the robatayaki was ok. The dessert was some weird miso soft serve which surprisingly was also salty. The food and service is absolutely amazing. The updates to the happy hour menu are exceptional. My biggest issue is with the seating. Management, PLEASE fix this!! Some of the seating especially in the front aren't appropriate for dining at all. The main seats are so uncomfortable. I had bigger and better seats in the 3rd grade, and that was 1990. It should be embarrassing to the restaurant to put a grown adult in those chairs. It's always tempting to squeeze myself on the cushion side. It definitely affects the dining experience. Came here because I love the restaurant Sampan . However my steak on a skewer was cooked with a long hair in it . I also asked for a non alcoholic beverage and expressed that I am the only one not drinking in my party to the waiter due to me being pregnant . I had a Friday night reservation at the sushi counter located downstairs. The chef's tasting menu ($68/person) is worth the price. It's 10 selections (2 from robatayaki) and a mochi. They also offer a premium tasting menu for an additional $10. I ordered the Japanese Scallop, Hamachi Carpaccio, Hamachi Carpaccio, Double Knot Big Eye Tuna, Crispy Brussels Sprout, Tofu, Broiled Seabass, Glazed Duck Breast, and Kobe Beef and Scallop for robatayaki. I also got the butterfly knot cocktail. My favorites were the Japanese scallop, broiled seabass and tofu. Everything was made wonderfully. The cauliflower was a little overly salty though. The chef's tasting menu is worth the price and it's definitely enough food. I took home the leftovers because I was so full. My server Jordan was wonderful.
