We came for happy hour on a weekend (which is such a good deal that I don't see a lot of restaurants offer). Their HH menu had a bunch of food options but only one cocktail/one beer, FYI. Inside is much bigger than it looks, with a front bar area, a dining area on the other side, and then a downstairs bar counter where they do the tasting menu. Props to the hostess for wrangling an extremely busy night and for finding a four-person spot for a three-person party, instead of trying to squeeze us into some two-person arrangement. HH is walk-in only, I recommend showing up at 4 right when they open so you don't have to wait like we did. I think we showed up around 5, put our names down for a quoted hour wait, and then didn't get seated until about 6:45 because everyone else had the same idea of enjoying HH for as long as possible. We ordered a bunch of dishes as soon as we sat down and they came out almost immediately. A note that the dishes are correspondingly HH-sized so if you're starving like we were, make sure to order two of each. My favorites: 1. Edamame dumplings: These were a weirdly mushy first bite but both the taste and texture grew on me. It's a nice, subtle flavor - I think I even prefer it to the OG pork variety. 2. Maitake mushroom skewer: I love roasted mushrooms especially this kind, with the ruffled crispy edges. 3. Crispy tofu with miso caramel sauce: I could've eaten a whole bowl of this. The only dish that didn't quite do it for me was the crispy Brussels sprouts which were drenched in probably the same sweet sticky sauce as the tofu but was way too salty. Our waiter wasn't the friendliest but came by often to check on us and made sure we knew when was the last call for HH. Total for a lot of food and three drinks came out to about $41 per person including tip. read more

Their happy hour deal is worth every penny. First of all, the deal is amazing anyways. Second, The quality of fish blew my mind. My friend and I were genuinely fan girling the entire time over how good the food was. We got the chirashi, albacore, edemame dumplings, pork potstickers, Brussel sprouts and a drink. Had a great first visit during happy hour last week for my birthday! My friend and I were able to grab a table around 4:45 without any reservations in hand. Within 15 minutes the entire place filled up, and there was a line waiting for a table to be seated. One of my other friends randomly showed up, and we kinda shared a booth wall seat, and the server was super kind and didn't make a fuss about it at all. Overall we had a solid visit. The karaage chicken was only okay imo, not that crispy or well seasoned, I'd probably skip this. Double Knot/Sampan is known for a couple of their staple flagship items I would say like edamame dumplings and kimchee fried rice, both continue to be solid. As inflation continues, the price of happy hour continues to hike up over the years, and it's not that great of a deal in my opinion, but the Schulson quality is always there. You might be closer to getting a better deal with their chefs tasting menu at $55 pp. All of the Robos I thought were okay, the short rib was nice and juicy though - all of them were solid, just nothing crazy amazing to write home about. The chicken baos were good, but again at $8 or $4 each, meh oh value? I'm glad I finally got to try their happy hour menu, but I wouldn't rush back for it based on value. I'd probably opt to try their tasting menu at $55 to compare personally. The place was very intriguing. We were led downstairs into a dark, dark room where it was difficult to read the menu. The area was lit by real candles via tea light candles and candelabras. Visited Double Knot a few times for dates. Lucky to have tried a la carte menu items and another time we did the Chef's Tasting once, which was cool to have a bunch of variety. The kitchen can be a bit slow, but DK tends to be busy so it's understandable. Come when you have time to make conversation! It's a dim space and can get loud with other diners/people drinking. Still, as most Schulson spots, it's a curated vibe ready for social media lovers to take photo ops and share location. Not inherently a bad thing if you like spaces like this. For sushi, it's fresh but I usually prefer other spots. I tend to get hungry soon after our meals here. An update to my experience was that the food was amazing again at a recent birthday dinner but the service at the hostess stand was sub par. I stopped by Double Knot for happy hour this week, and it held true as one of my favorite happy hours in the city. They have a large selection of small plates and a variety of wine/cocktails to choose from. My favorite dish is the Kim Chee Fried Rice, and the portion is plenty to share between 2 people. We ended up getting 2 glasses of wine each and 5 small plates with a grand total of ~$58 pre-tip. Not a bad deal! I went on a Wednesday around 4:30, so it wasn't all that crowded. However, I would recommend trying to arrive closer to 4pm if you are going on a busier day of the week (Thurs/Fri). One thing that rubbed me the wrong way (and why I am giving 4 stars instead of 5) is that we were told we only had ~1 hour to dine even though happy hour went until 7pm. Such a cool vibe, we started at the bar upstairs. I ordered a lemon drop, and it was just ok. No sugar on the rim, didn't even ask if I wanted it, pretty watered down. Didn't feel like it had fresh lemon juice, unfortunately. My husband had the splice knob, he said it was good, balanced, not too spicy. The edamame was really good, random, I know. I don't know what they do different, but it was literally just sea salt, but just tasted very fresh, the edamame was firm and not overdone or overheated. It was just very good. My husband asked for hamachi, and the waiter said "what's that?"? Anyway, on to what we had. The tun sashimi was good, nice size, pretty presentation. We also had several Robatayaki. The first one was the chicken thigh, it had good flavor, but was a touch dry. Could've used some sort of sauce, and we we're out of noticed it was overdone. The second was the pork cheek, that was delicious. I squeezed a little bit of the lemon that had tajin on it that was served with the scallop, which was our third one. That was probably my favorite, and was cooked perfectly. it came with grilled lemon and was fantastic. The last thing we did was the filet, it was prepared well, but was surprisingly tough. Didn't feel like a filet, was more like a skirt steak. It came with sweet potato purée, and me so butter. But it tasted more like pozzo, very tart, which I actually ended up using for the chicken and it paired well with that. I didn't feel like it went with the steak. I'm still giving it a 4, because the restaurant itself was so incredibly cool, I feel like with a few little tweaks that could be amazing. upgrade the drink ingredients, and tweak the finishes on the food, and it could be great. But was definitely left wanting. I would try it again, maybe it was just an off night. we finished up with their version of salted caramel ice cream which was nice, but the passionfruit mochi ice cream it's not my favorite. They did not space the courses out well. They sometimes came all at once and I had multiple dishes in front of me which was overwhelming and made me rush at times, not savoring the dishes. I wish the tasting menu including more fish (or robatayaki (grilled! Skewers!). The a5 wagyu and lobster tail were very good, and the edamame dumpling was also a standout. The duck scallion bun, skewer, miscellaneous meat, and Chilean sea bass were flavorful, but I didn't feel that the flavors were that complex. I went here because of a last-minute invite from a friend. He got the downstairs seating area, which was apparently more difficult to get reservations for than entry level. Our server recommended three sakes: Chrysanthemum Mist, Rainbow something...and another one that is slipping my mind. Will edit if I remember. Service was phenomenal. Wait staff was knowledgeable and, after a lull at the beginning, the food came out like clockwork. I expected more sushi when I picked the chef's tasting menu, but I was pleasantly surprised about the variety of items. Definitely liked the meat and fish the best, though. The short rib skewers in particular were melt-in-your-mouth soft and flavored with sweet marinade, and the steak and bass were tender with mild seasoning that complemented them well. I especially liked the crispness of the duck patties inside the baos and the charred buns were a nice touch. My friend said he would give it a 9/10, and my score is pretty up there too. The happy hour was really lovely, I was so impressed with how big the shortened menu was. The first-come-first-serve at the bar must have been popular, because our coupling could only get one seat. The bartenders were nice and attentive enough, though they would stand and talk to each other behind the bar for a few extended moments when the busy bar was asking for checks or drinks. My biggest peeve was that I ordered a Diet Coke and they gave me a Diet Pepsi without telling me. Otherwise, the food was really good. Made reservation through Resy for 8:30pm which given the different table types took a Phd to figure out arrive at 8:22pm for an 8:30 reservation. Yes we were a little bit early but hostess told us it would be close to 8:30pm before we were seated which was fine. Parties came in after us and we still were waiting.... I am healing from a fractured ankle and there was no place to sit. A family member went up and asked for a seat for me. Hostess was rude and abrupt. Moved a chair in corner for me had to wait over 45 minutes past our reservation time before being seated. My son was upset and ready to leave. No acknowledgment of his birthday. On the bright side our waiter was good and amazing. Restaurant is very trendy and a great place for a date or special occasion. It is very dark especially stairwell to second floor. Hate Reservation is for a specific table and if they are not turning tables you wait awhile with no place to sit and wait. Not a handicapped friendly establishment. But I will be back for the food. We dined on 3 rolls, 2 skewers, 4 pieces of nigiri, and an order of bao buns and it was the perfect amount for the two of us!
