Double Play Pizza is an excellent, very small, pizza shop located on Mission Oaks Boulevard near Vons and Patron Mexican Bar & Grill. They offer a good variety of pizzas, subs, wings, and spaghetti at good prices. They also have lunch specials at good prices from 11:00 AM to 3 PM. While I tend to go to Topper's more often, particularly for lunch, due to their fantastic salad bar I go to Double Play more often for dinner since they offer all of their pizza varieties in personal sizes and not just small, medium, and large sizes. While Double Play is mostly a takeout pizza place they do have five small indoor tables if you want to dine in. In addition, they offer a small selection of different soft drinks for sale. I wanted to try a mom/pop pizza shop because well, there's a uniqueness to their dough and freshness. Double Play delivers. It has a thin crust version of their Maui pizza that was very good. Their cheese pizza was OK. Wish the crust was thinner. It was decent for the pizza. Lastly, I do want to note they have a 3.5% credit card surcharge. And they also did not accept the $10 coupon found on their website. Because of that, that is why I leave a 4-star review. If money is not an issue, go try it out! read more

I'm a NY pizza snob, so take my review with that in mind. This is not NY pizza. This is the kind of pizza that might work for a 10 year old's birthday party. But TBH you'd be better off with any chain restaurant for that considering how expensive this place is for how little you get. All the ingredients were cheap, the sauces watered down, the dough and cheeses all low quality. The cooked dough was wet and soft, hardly any herbs or spice in the overly sweet pizza sauce, and nothing special about the cheese or toppings. A large pizza... a LARGE... is 14" and costs as much as a 17" pizza at other joints. Not cool at all. Bordering on ridiculous. Had a few other non-pizza dishes which were all plagued by the same cost cutting measures - watered down sauces, smaller portion sizes than you would expect, low quality ingredients, all for top dollar prices. Hard pass, will never return. Save your money and skip this one. read more

Some friends live in the area and seem to order from here regularly and they like it. We had ordered a couple pizzas and an order of wings recently and all was enjoyed. We ordered two medium pizzas (basics - one cheese and one pepperoni) and an order of wings. The pizza's were nicely sized, sauced and ingredients were not skipped out on. The pizza's were cooked well and I enjoyed the crust. The pepperoni pizza did look a bit oily/greasy compared to the cheese pizza, but it was still great! The wings were crispy, good sized and had some good meat on them; the wing sauce was just right! The order came out timely and customer service was friendly and easy to deal with. The machine picked up and left my order on the machine with my name and phone number and my order. 15 minutes later when I called back to verify my order someone did answer and told me they opened late and they didn't have anyone there to take my order. I had called because I was on a time crunch. The guy (it was a guy) who answered asked if I wanted to place a new order now. The owner has complained about how hard it is to find help to me many times in the last 3 years. She works hard and I know times are hard because nobody wants to take a menial job like answering the phone. The food is great. But iffy - not answering the phone and not being able to deliver are not going to get them very far. My order was over $30 and so they are now out of that for the day since I didn't have time to wait once I got there. As I said, my favorite pizza place with at least 20 others within driving range and I'm flexible most of the time. This is the second time we tried them in three weeks, to be fair after ordering a works type pizza the first time we wanted to try a one topping on our second time to give them a fair try. They boast using whole milk mozzarella, I believe that they do so this is a positive, if they used a couple more ounces on a large pie, that would be great. The crust on the large pepperoni was not made in house, the gum-line was awful, the sogginess equally awful. The flavor and texture is nothing you would want again or crave. This quality is what you would expect from little Cesars $5 pizza but not a place that charges $30 bucks for a one topping and small dinner salad. Hey Double Play this advice is on me, so you're welcome! 1. Use quality dough not pre-fab dough skins. 2. The sauce is bitter and too wet, hence the gum-line 3. Top the pizzas, don't skimp 4. Salad food costs are extremely low so when you skimp on a salad the only thing you're accomplishing is discouraging people from ordering an item with high profit margins...consumers are smart, give them credit, make it good and we will love you!
