This place has a lot to offer, especially for the residents of East County, San Diego. Not to mention the great area of San Diego. They offer pet food, live stock feed, grain and bedding, tack, and propane. I was surprised by how much hay they carried and how busy they were when I visited. They also offer tubs and farming and hardware for animal husbandry. They also have sort of a general store, but for animals and livestock. The staff members were friendly and busy. They have a complete line of most brands of horse, chicken and other poultry products (even pellets for my tortoise). The yard staff is very helpful and is even inquiring as to what i need as I get out of my day truck. They have a lot of reasonably priced gifts. I get my feed delivered from here once a month. Just today one of their delivery drivers drove over my hose and broke it. The driver was very apologetic and said he would pay for it. It was one of those expensive hoses too but we knew it was an accident. My girlfriend said dont worry about it and that was that. The owner Chuck surprised us later that day and brought me a brand new hose. He was such a nice person. This place will go above and beyond. They deliver and they have very fair prices. We were greeted immediately both by the inside and outside staff, the property is clean and neat, the selection across animal needs was fantastic, and I could go on with other lovely traits. We were there on a mission which didn't allow for much wandering, but I plan to return to do just that. They helped us find what we needed quickly. Happy to have found this place! This is local feed store. Very personal customer service. When you pull up the guys in the yard are quick to ask if if they can get you anything. They load feed or whatever you need in your truck, taking half of the work of getting feed back to the home front. My kids love coming here to see the new chicks and cats. I love this place, always come here to buy my baby chicks and feed. The owner is knowledgable and if you have any questions, she is always there to help. Here is where the 5 stars come in, I accidentally dropped my credit card in the parking lots after I made my purchase and drove home (18.5 miles one-way). I called and the owner said she would check outside and long and behold, it was where I parked. Instead of me driving back out, she said she would mail the credit card to my house, really? Yup, 2 days later it arrived at my house. Thank you sooo much!! DO NOT ORDER HAY HERE. Ordered last week. They said they'd deliver Tues. Called Monday a.m. they said they had not ONE bale of hay. I call this morning & speak to the owner & she has every excuse in the book not to deliver. I remind her I've been a good customer for 5 1/2 years (about $1,000 a month). She says ok, she can deliver, sometime later. I explain my horses are out of hay and no thank you, I have 2 other reputable people delivering today. My horses will never go hungry because of the incompetence of Double S Tack & Feed employees again. read more

If they ever do get anything wrong, they take responsibility for it, apologized, fix it immediately, and it doesn't happen again. Great communication. Ok. So I wanted to buy some baby chickens; chicks. Crazy right? I went to Double S and the lady took one look at me and said, "Looking for chicks?" I guess she could tell I was a city boy. Obviously not there to buy feed for my cows. I just told her, "Yeah, I want to get some chicks. But I don't know anything about it" What followed was 30 minutes of her giving me the lowdown on baby chickens. She helped me pick out the things I should buy (all cheap stuff, like $3-4 each) and told me how I could save money by using household stuff (cardboard box, etc). She even steered me toward the wise purchases ($4 for a 5 lb bag of feed vs $8 for a 25 lb bag). Awesome place. Go there to buy your horse chow. Or if like me you're looking to enter into some urban farmstead experiment go there too; they'll hook you up. read more

Drove out to Double S today to get some feed and scratch for the chickens. Get all the way there, let them know what I want so they can load it, go to pay and realize that I forgot my wallet. The Proprietor at first said, "don't worry about it, leave your stuff here, run home and come back, I'll hold it here." I let her know that I lived about ten/twelve miles away and I'd have to come back tomorrow and she said, "Oh, well take it with you and come back tomorrow and pay." Then she said, better yet, "call me with your card number, that way you don't have to make the trip." Then it occurred to me, I've never had a bad experience there. They are always friendly, courteous, and informative; and I realized it all starts with the owner/proprietor of the business. From the top down everybody is great to work with there. The woman on the phone said they had many and was not willing to check for us while we were on the phone. We had told her we drove far to come specifically to this place and her words were "oh well it's on your way home". Great locally owned feed store, right off of Interstate 8 just east of Lake Jennings. The have the variety of hays, and hay pellets I need, besides all the other things we need as horse owners. Be sure to check out the special "quill art" cards on the counter and other gift items. Even if you don't have any livestock, there are fun things to buy. Oh, and the guys who load the feed actually listen to me and load it so I can get it out rather easily. Makes a difference. read more

This Is THE place if you're interested in chickens!! The last few years I've had neighbors and friends with chickens and since La Mesa gave the go-ahead for chickens we googled feed stores and just happened to go here first. LOVE it! We told the lady at the counter (happened to be Rita) that we were interested in getting some chicks for eggs. She was great! She showed us around, showed us the chicks, gave us some info and let us mull it over until they got a new batch of chicks in a few days. We showed up, got our 4 chicks, all the supplies needed and came home to raise them into chickens. From there, it's been customer service like you wouldn't believe. We enjoyed the 4 chicks so much, Rita special ordered us two more from their breeder. And then we go two more. And then three more. Now we are full. Ha! The store is super clean, the chicks are in huge pens and she'll even let ya pick out the ones you want and get them yourself. I realized their prices are the lowest I've seen after going to two other feed stores just to see what they had. I asked about buying hay for coop bedding and was not only corrected in that I should use straw instead, but that I could have all the loose straw I wanted for free. Sweet! Double S has a great staff. Very Knowledgeable. Ask, if they don't know they will find out. They have everything under the sun or they can order it. I don't find that the prices are outrageous. They support animal adoptions & have adoption days. I like that they support the community. Very special people . There are feed stores closer to me but I much prefer Double S' atmosphere, friendliness & prices (& Murphy of course). read more

Very knowledgeable about chickens. We went there and bought two chicks and the woman who helped us told which ones were more skittish, which ones would be more docile around our kids and what color eggs they layed and so forth. I was impressed. Their prices were excellent (Chicks were just under $5 each and a large bail of straw for my older hens was only $9.50) and they had a great selection of everything. I would give this place a zero star review if I could. I went to fill my propane tanks with my husband and left with empty tanks and feeling disgusted. When we arrived, we went inside to ask for assistance and the person behind the desk didnt greet us at all but instead gave us a very rude judging look. When we politely asked for help with the propane, he stated shortly that he'd be there in a minute. As if we were interrupting him. We went outside to wait for him and when he came out, he made very poor "attempts" to fill our tank and then said that he couldn't because somehow it was locked. It was very strange and we knew for certain at this point that he was prejudice and that our Mexican accent and appearance put him off from the moment we stepped inside the place. I wanted to shop around the store because it looked like a great place for me to get things for my business but I won't be going back with such terrible treatment.
