After spending 22 years in Rock Hill, SC, I rarely found a pie that could stand up to true NY/NJ standards. Now that I'm retired and living in Bryan, TX, I've been on the hunt for anything close to authentic New York-style pizza. By pure luck, we stumbled into Champion Pizza at 2008 Texas Ave S, College Station, TX 77840 -- and what a find. Only afterward did we learn that the owner and founder runs several pizza shops in New York and brought that same craft down here to Texas. Suddenly it all made sense. The crust, the sauce, the fold... it's the real deal. It tasted like home. I absolutely love it, and I tip my hat to the team working there. We were genuinely fortunate to walk into the right place at the right time. So if you want the closes thing to NY style pizza, come to this place.

It decided to give up right there on the plate. So sad. You know how it gets, when the edges get slimy and kind of curl over? When it has that gassy-baggy smell and taste? It was dark in the restaurant (I think we know why now, and it isn't for ambience), so I couldn't see at first what the problem is. So when I started eating a $18.49 salad, I didn't think I'd have to dig through it and see if it were suitable for an activity like actual eating. I don't know where the rest of it ended up. There were no red onions, and there were no tomatoes. Maybe they were all at church praying for forgiveness. The chicken itself was decent, if a little little and a little dry (but who wants wet chicken when the rest of the salad was just that, am I right?). On the menu, it says: "...the Santa Fe Salad at BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse is the perfect lunch dish to break up the doldrums of the workday." The hostess was genuinely friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant has a nostalgic type atmosphere. It was also extremely busy with a very large party, so I understand the staff was under pressure. Even so, service was quite slow from the time we were seated until we received our drinks and food. The biggest disappointment was the food. Our appetizer, Bread & Garlic Oil was chewy, and baked perfectly, but the "garlic oil" had almost no garlic flavor and didn't resemble olive oil at all. I'm betting it was vegetable oil or canola oil, which should be a sin in a pizza place! When I mentioned it, the solution was simply adding a clove of garlic to the bowl, which didn't improve it. How hard would it be to use REAL olive oil and infuse it with fresh roasted garlic! We also ordered a specialty pizza that was supposed to have roasted garlic, but it arrived without it. The pizza was remade after we pointed it out, and the second one was better, but it still seemed to be drizzled with the same flavorless oil. The crust also lacked the structure I'd expect from a good pizza, with every slice folding over when picked up. I can see why people enjoy the atmosphere, and perhaps a classic pepperoni pizza would be a better choice. The staff did make an effort to correct the mistakes, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, based on our experience, the food simply didn't live up to the reviews, and with so many great pizza places around, I don't see myself returning.
