Doug Fir was closed during the pandemic and the restaurant/bar part of it was closed for quite a while after the pandemic. This place is a nostalgic favorite as it's where my husband and I had our first date. Our experience this weekend was much better than our last pre-pandemic visit and definitely deserves an update. We arrived a little after 7:00 and had no trouble getting a table. An hour later, the place was getting busy. I think it depends on what band is playing, a lot of people seemed to know each other. Very attractive servers and bartender, our female server was very sweet and generally efficient. Things were slightly odd though. We ordered drinks, we usually each have one double and were told, "oh, we don't do doubles." This was both funny and strange as restaurants all over town do a double for us and we eat out almost every Saturday night. But whatever. I ordered a vodka cranberry and was told they were out of cranberry juice. Also odd, as it's a bar staple and they weren't all that busy. But I rolled with the flow and had grapefruit instead. The drinks were well mixed. We started with the deviled eggs, which were wonderfully delicious. Probably the best we've had in town. For dinner, I had the chicken strips. They were very tasty, but there were only three and they were pretty small. They look larger in my pic than they actually were. This seemed a bit cheap on their part. The fries were very plentiful, so I was full, but still.... My husband had the Notorious P.I.G., which is a pulled pork sandwich. His portion was great and he shared a couple of bites, it was really, really good. Wish I'd gotten that instead. Overall, a good experience but they need to work a bit on the drinks situation and better portions of some items. We're looking forward to going again, I know they are changing their location soon, but not sure how soon. Definitely worth a visit. read more

They also do a great job with the presentation of the drinks Vibe: the atmosphere and decor make this place special. I haven't found a place in Portland like this yet! 3.5 stars if that was an option. We ordered a couple of drinks, a tequila sunrise, some other tequila drink I don't remember the name of, which I didn't care much for. Their fries and sauce it came with was good. I liked the vibe of the restaurant, we didn't stay at the hotel. They have a fun vending machine in right outside the entry doors. Nightclub is across the street and you can hear the bass bumping which could annoy some people. I didn't mind. I wish they had more options for food. Ate here last month and we didn't have a reservation but ended up only waiting 5 minutes to be seated for a party of 2. The host was quick to clean and table. Very thankful. I seem to always ebd up here by default. Sizzle Pie's COVID-19 hrs, or they dont have enough people to make the pizzas and I end up here. Both happened in the past week and both times I had the good, no... great fortune of dealing with Derek as my bartender. They have a nice little menu set up. I think there is something tasty for just about everyone on it... and I know they have enough libations to warm or cool you on the coldest or warmest of nights. I have been here twice before. Once for music and once on a plutonic date, turned questionable. The setting inside is as attractive as the name. A pure slice of the Pacific Northwest that I am now thinking is reason enough to make this my first stop when I come back into town with my job. EATS THUS FAR: Mac and cheese: I don't like mac and cheese. I never have.... but I never stop looking for a place that can change my mind about that statement. This place didn't do it for me. Beyond Burger: It was okay... Just don't compare it to the Impossible Burger. I make those at home. Chicken tenders and waffle fries: I have had less than a plate of fries in the past year, with the majority of that 3/4 plate having been eaten here. The tenders were nothing spectacular... it was just tasty enough to satiate my hunger pangs. I am sure I will be back to add to this foodie journal, which I shall once again notate... Stopped in for breakfast on a Sunday morning and it was quiet. Got a booth for 5 in the slightly retro feeling lounge area - booths are super comfy and there is great natural light from the large windows. Kids had blueberry pancakes which were sweet and fluffy. I had the biscuits and gravy with eggs on the side - biscuit was crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, held up well to the gravy. A friend tried the pop tart which was interesting - a homemade pop tart they was less sweet than the original sugar trap. Service was timely and they checked on us often. All in all it was a good choice for a quick bite. Street parking can be tricky but there is enough in the blocks surrounding the place that it wasn't an issue for us. read more

I read about this indie club and a few other jazz clubs in a New York Times Travel Book. Unfortunately, by the time I made it to Portland the jazz clubs closed due to the pandemic. I am not sorry I ended up here though. The drinks were very reasonable and the layout is perfect. If I were to open my own bar or lounge one day, this is the design I'd want. You walk in and there are French doors leading to a bar and a set of stairs leading to the music. All live shows are downstairs. Through the French doors is the bar, lots of tables and cute intimate booths, on the other side there are more private areas for talking and an outdoor patio and restrooms. It's literally a place to listen to music and once you've had enough there is a place to go to chill and have a conversation. Brilliant! read more

I've been to the Doug Fir Lounge twice to see my favorite musicians live. Both times were phenomenal. Let's talk about the space first. It's designed so well; kind of a cabin-meets-upscale-Portland kind of feel. Upstairs (where you enter) has a darling little bar. The bartenders I've met have all been incredibly kind. My favorite spot upstairs, though, is the private outdoor area. It has about a dozen different covered seating areas that are lit with candles; it's cozy, rain or shine. You can also smoke outside, which I am honestly so grateful for. I know how anti-smoking everyone is these days, but there are still so many of us who smoke when we drink. Instead of forcing smokers out of the venue to the street (where it honestly isn't safe at night, especially for women), the Doug Fir Lounge has still kept a spot for them, and I appreciate it. Downstairs is where the music venue is. It's a great open area where sound travels well. There is a full bar at the back of the venue, and the experiences that I've had with the bartenders there, too, have been wonderful. There's a designated merch spot and clean bathrooms. All around, it is a great place for shows, and my favorite in the Portland area. I also want to take a moment to compliment the Doug Fir Lounge for their inclusivity. The staff there is already amazing, but they went above and beyond when I brought my close friend to a show, who is a paraplegic in a wheelchair. We've been to a few shows here and it's a super intimate venue with great sound. The upstairs restaurant/bar area transports you into another decade with it's carefully curated decor. It oozes hip and makes you want to drink a martini with your pinky in the air. The bartender made hubby and I some mean Moscow Mules and Blackberry martinis. **Bar Review Only** I'm tempted to leave five stars, based soley on the fact that they serve a delicious (and affordable) Impossible Burger, up until around 1-130am! Plus, I absolutely loved the inside of this place - big logs and mirrors are used to decorate the interior, finished off with a cozy fire place area. It really makes you feel like you are inside of a ski lodge, and the mirrors make it feel a lot bigger than it is. I haven't been downstairs yet but the lounge down there hosts concerts all the time. We all tried the Impossible Burger ($10 / $9 during happy hour) and it was a perfect meal after a few drinks. Unlike the other places we've tried, they let you add toppings to the burger, like a fried egg or cheese), and again, it's very affordable compared to $15-20 for an Impossible burger at a fancier restaurant. Even without happy hour, the prices of the drinks and food seemed very fair and the bartenders were friendly. After a long absence I made my way to DFL to try one of their 15th anniversary weekly specials this month. For $5.00 I had their pickled brined and panko breaded fried chicken sandwich. Paid a visit to Doug Fir for the first time this weekend. I didn't see a show or dine in, this review is only for the bar area. Loved the ambiance - very cool vibe. The restrooms (and hallway to them) were trippy.. all mirrors! I've had a burger here in the past that was amazing, a fatty burger with candied bacon (however, no longer on the menu) . Today I ordered the pot roast and it was not good at all.... especially for the price. Not much flavor, I actually avoided the sauce and fished at the meat only because I felt like I had to eat something since it was over $20. My husband agreed on the pot roast. He ordered a burger tonight, it was just ok. Nothing special, small meat patty, he thought the Caesar salad he ordered with it sucked lol. I haven't had the food here, so this review is solely based on my experience at the bar and downstairs at the concert venue. I've been to two shows here, and each time, I've had a really fun time! The concert area is super intimate which is great because you feel like you can talk to and hangout with the people around you without being overwhelmed by crazy lights and effects. Because it is so small, the times I've went, the artist hangs out with the crowd before their set, or stays behind after to meet the crowd and sign stuff. Drinks here are good, I always get an Amaretto Sour, and they make it really well. One time I was double charged on my credit card, and called the next day right when I found it on my statement. Their staff are SO professional! I called in and I talked to someone in the main office and she was really clear about next steps and giving me her contact info and exact time she would contact me back, and she did call AND email me an explanation of what happened and what is going to happen to reverse the charge. I've honestly never had a better experience in dealing with a credit card issue than here! read more

Not a bad way for a weekend finale. Portland has enough vegan dishes to make me think I was practicing. Had to break that mindset with a little meat in the brunch burger and a little more meat in the Mary. Tiny place, more outside seating than inside, so it can be a challenge to find a seat, hope for nice weather. In the lounge everything is ordered at the bar, drinks and food. We were there for happy hour and sampled many of the food offerings. Most memorable were the tacos, Caesar salad and the basic tots. The mac and cheese was good but could have used a dash of seasoning and the mac was not al dente. The beef sliders were great. The hummus plate was a bit on the spicy side and round out the chickpea flavor of the hummus. The other items on the plate, olives and feta were nice and the pickled vegetables were curious and interesting. The .38 Special cocktail aka a rye whiskey sour, was tasty and nice with a lot of ice. Always fun to come here in the summer and hang out by the fire. I stayed in the Hotel last week and it was really nice. Breakfast was also good in the morning. I'm rating 4 stars because drinks are spending and it's trendier than I prefer. Friday, after (my g/f's) work, dropped into Doug Fir. We were early in, not too many people there. Very pleasant bartendress, got us going with drinks and a [free!!!] soda water and lime for me, the d/d. Been here many times. I've come in for lunch, after work drinks, even saw a concert downstairs. It's a comfortable, trendy environment. The heavy logs tend to elicit a "we're definitely not in a dive bar" aura. Music, while a bit loud, can be a good background. One thing - and not a negative, just a note - several groups came in after us and it seemed like seating space was at a premium. That's no fault of DF, just something that happens on a Friday evening. No one seemed to mind though. Because we bought drinks en masse, it's hard to know what individual costs would have been but I don't think they were exorbitant. Also had the happy hour vegan nachos - not really my cup of tea but our non-dairy person praised them. And the pork rinds which I really enjoyed. No worries all around - we'll be back. read more

Doug Fir is the closest place to get drinks when I stay in Portland, so naturally I find myself here frequently. Other than the location, the biggest selling point to me is the outside seating area. It is very large and has never been too crowded to find a place to sit and drink and smoke and, on a good day, enjoy the sunshine and some fresh air. There is some cover when it's raining too though. While I'm mostly here for the drinks, I've come here just to eat too. Breakfast was an absolute no because their biscuits and gravy were terrible and that sort of steered me away from ever wanting to try more of their breakfast, but I'm a fan of their Fir Burger and fries for lunch or dinner. I've only been to a couple of their shows downstairs (and admit it's been awhile since either of them) but I liked the set up and had an enjoyable time. Not a bad place at all to see smaller bands/artists and I wouldn't hesitate to see a show here again, if someone I knew I already liked was performing. The Doug Fir isn't somewhere I'd ever go out of my way to eat or drink at, but I'm still a fan because I really do appreciate having it so close to me while visiting Portland, and I haven't ever had a reason to not continue stopping in at least once while in the area. read more

How is it that I have lived in Portland this long and just visited Doug Fir for the first time...shocking, I know. I did the whole experience today though. I met a friend for dinner and waited for a table. Normally I would have been pretty annoyed that my 20 minute quoted wait turned into nearly an hour but my friend was running late so it worked. The lounge is pretty small for the crowd that inhabits it but I will say that the crowd are all super chill which makes things feel less close quarters. The bathrooms are wicked cute though a touch odd with the mass mirror effect. Dinner was amazing seriously. I had them completely alter a dish since my diet is pretty restrictive and not only was the waiter beyond accommodating but he made sure it was all good etc. Very sweet indeed. The food was just amazing and I loved the menu variety so if you want a plate of cheesy greasy bar fries and a cocktail...it is all yours. Personally I had a house salad, grilled green beans and a grilled Halibut steak with capers that was perfection seriously. We wandered down to the lounge for a show and had a great time. The sound was wonderful for the space and we really all out had an amazing night. read more

Was here last night and now I must say, The Fir is absolutely my favorite place to be. The decor gives this place a cool retro cabin feel and ambience. What's even better is that you can have dinner and drinks right before you head downstairs for a show. Their venue also happens to be my favorite place to see a show because it's not too big, the acoustics are great, and again the decor is frigging cool!! With all that being said, the best part of the Doug fir is their bartender Megan! She's friendly, funny and her customer service skills are A++. I love the decor inside and out! cabin interior with deer head mounted on the wall, modern lighting, awesome seating, and booths make this a great hang out spot. Outside, theres benches and even a gas fireplace to keep you warm on them cold Portland nights. There's always bands playing downstairs (see the paper for listings), unfortunately, I haven't checked this part yet. For $5, I guess you can't go wrong with a pbr and shot of whiskey. I'm a bit partial to this cool venue. I've driven down from Seattle to see shows here 4 times now. Sorry for the late review. They also have a hotel attached to it, but I've never stayed there. A friend has stayed at the Jupiter hotel many times and has never seen a show, so I think I win! There's a restaurant/bar as you enter and the food us good, but the real attraction is downstairs. There's a small bar area in the back with the usual beers, but their selection of bourbons is quite good. On this last visit, I spied bottles of Blanton and Buffalo Trace. Well done. Prices are also reasonable. $6 pints for a local IPA on tap. The stage is relatively small by most standards, but that just means a very intimate experience. There are some small tables lining the outer walls and some seats at the bar counter, but not many. This is also Portland, so although folks will crowd in the front, if you just want to take a quick photo, they'll let you squeeze by. I've never had a bad experience here. I would rate it as one of the most intimate and laid back venues ever. Keep it weird Portland! Love you! read more

This place is connected to the hotel we stayed in called the Jupiter Hotel. I am normally reluctant to try places that are connected to a hotel as they are normally cheesy and weak at best. I checked into the hotel late Wed nite/early Thurs morning around 2am and the place was rocking as they have an outdoor area for drinking/congregating. I definitely nodded my head with my hand over my mouth with the notion of being there sometime before I left. Unfortunately we never got the chance to go here for just drinks and having fun, but we did get a chance to have breakfast here before we left. The place is quite dark with mirrors near the entrance and bathrooms which can throw you off if you are mildly hungover LOL. I decided to order the the pastrami hash which was made up of yukon gold potatoes, red and green peppers, onions, pastrami and 2 poached eggs. That dish was mad good to say the least! I dropped a little habanero sauce on it...I believe the brand was called some kind of aardvark...shit was good and enhanced the already tasty hash! Went for a concert, towards the end of the night some friends and I decide to go upstairs and have a smoke. Dude at the top tells us that area is closed, oh ok whatever, we start heading back downstairs when he says we can't go back inside. Uhh what? He says we can finish our beers but we have to go outside after? At this point we don't understand, maybe it's because the show is almost over? We go outside to smoke and mull it over, as we're doing this we notice a group go into the bar area and we're like wtf? We go back in and ask why they were allowed in and we got kicked out, he said we all showed signs of intoxication. I could understand if we were spilling our drinks, stumbled up the stairs, or were talking obnoxiously loud or something, but we were literally just walking up with our drinks trying to go to the outside fire area. We're dumbfounded and ask nicely if we could just go down and finish the show we paid $40 for, they say no and even start getting smart with us while we were expressing our frustration in a reasonable manner. Fine, we're not getting back in, I ask to at least use the restroom that's right there at the entrance, no possible way I could try and sneak in by doing so and I get a, "Nope! Get outta here." So for anyone planning on going to a concert here and drinking alcohol, be careful not to walk up the stairs normally, because you will be kicked out for signs of intoxication. read more

After not frequenting this place for at least 10 years....I have come here with other people twice in the last month prior to attending concerts at the Bossanova ballroom. It just seems like it might be a good chill place to hang out and have some food/drinks while waiting for a concert. I guess I was totally wrong!!! One of the two times I was recently here....I made a reservation for dinner for five people in the dining room. I got there 15 minutes early and the guy couldn't find my reservation at first and then finally found it. He said he didn't want to seat me until the rest of my party was there. I asked "why not?" he explained that he was behind and didn't have menus and water on the table yet. I asked again if I could go ahead and just be seated because that didn't matter to me... And he still asked me to wait. The place was not even that busy. So I went to the other side and sat down at the bar because that is the self-serve side where you have to order at the bar and it was happy hour. He saw me there and waved and I never heard from him again. Fortunately there was one large area out on the patio that was available and it was a warmer evening so I was able to grab that for my group. But on this side you have to order happy hour food and I have to say they're happy hour burger is one of the worst burgers I have ever eaten... meat is smaller than the bun and it has a cold kraft single as the cheese. lol Recently I came here with a group prior to the Puddle of Mudd concert and I was the first one to arrive of the group. I went to the happy hour/order at the bar side and it was apparent that the bartender was on something. I ordered, he took my card and then some girl came to the counter and asked if the Photo Booth worked. He said that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and asked her if she would like a shot, her choice, because the Photo Booth didn't work. He asked her what she would like a shot of and she asked him to make the choice. He left me standing there even though I asked for my card back. I swear this guy ran up and down looking at the bottles trying to figure out which shot to give her for at least five minutes. Weird! By then there were two other people behind me and I asked for my card again which he ignored again because he was busy pouring a free shot. Now everybody in line was talking with each other trying to figure out what the hell he was doing. He poured the shot gave it to her and then immediately went to the guy behind me in line and took his order. I asked a third time for my card... And he finally gave it to me with my charges and it was $27. I said this is not the right amount... Because mine was much less. Are you ready for this? He said "I put the guy behind you order on yours by accident... Can you to work it out between you?" WHAT?? Then he charged the guy behind me $7, which was also wrong because his order was on my bill. After that he ignored us because there was a huge line... The end of an era. We've been coming here for years - staying at the attached Jupiter Hotel and hopping over to the DFL for happy hour / dinner - but thanks to Selin Bert and ego-tripping security like Justin, we won't be coming here ever again. (Please, someone let me know if Selin and Justin move on. Those two have ruined this place.) I hope that the (very nice) bar staff like Sean and Nick find better bosses than Selin to work for sooner than later. And I hope Justin get the counseling (or anger management) that he obviously needs. Justin and Selin wouldn't even let me leave with an ice water tonight, that the bartender had put in a plastic to-go cup . (I was only taking it to my hotel room, 25 feet away.) We've been coming here for years (and bringing the bands and crew that we drive with us). I've never had trouble getting an ice water to-go from the bar, until tonight. Never again.
