I'm getting my house painted soon which has a snowball effect of realizing I need to get other things fixed first. One example is my side door. It's a pre-hung metal door but they left a gap under the threshold and the slab so when you step on the threshold it bends down a bit and chips away at the stucco underneath. I knew without fixing this once my house is patched and repainted this will chip away in a matter of days and weeks. I've had Doug bookmarked for a long time, probably 10 years. Don't remember how I found his info but I had him saved for the future. He not only installs doors but he's a pro at fixing doors. His website is full of details on how he addresses different problems including thresholds. Almost every door company out there just wants to sell you a new door and are not interested in fixing doors. Most of the people willing to were jack of all trade handyman types but I wanted a pro who specializes in doors. I hadn't seen any recent reviews so I texted him to see if he's still working and not only was he but he came out first thing the next day at 7am. He analyzed the problem and came up with a solution that resolved the issue. He was able to fill in the gap between the frame and slab with shims and seal it all with silicon. Now I can probably tap dance on the threshold and wouldn't have any of the stucco below disturbed. It's all ready for the painters to patch the stucco and repaint. I finally got through to Doug who asked me to send him pictures of my door along with pictures of the frame, no email back. I tried calling again and got a hold of Doug...he hung up on me. I tried calling back, no answer. Seriously, what kind of game is this!? Based off the previous reviews I thought I'd give this guy more chances than I would anyone else. Forget it!! Going elsewhere. Comment to Doug: Why would I hang up on you if I've been trying since June to get you to come to my home. That makes absolutely no sense. Try again. Update 9/16/19: We ended up going with another company who was willing to go the extra steps needed to properly waterproof our new door. Cost us a few hundred dollars extra for removing and patching our stucco but at least we know the job was done correctly (the black waterproofing paper/flashing was missing 8" back from door which we were only able to address by busting out the stucco). Our old wood threshold was removed and we have a clean modern install on the new door. All I can say it that sometimes you have to advocate for yourself in making sure contractors aren't trying to cut corners or are actually listening to their customers. This job cost me about $700 more than Doug's price but potentially saved us thousands down the road in future repairs if the door was not sealed/waterproofed properly and leaked into our brand new $12k kitchen cabinets. While I'm sure Doug has the skill set needed to install most doors, he was just not a good fit for our project. While I upgraded my initial review from a one star to a higher rating, Doug's snarky response and posting of my personal information on here has certainly earned him back the one star status. I guess since everyone has my personal information and address they can come by and see the great door install that was done by someone other than Doug. Way to keep it classy Doug :) read more

Two years ago, in October 2013, I met Doug from Gillespie Doors. He came to my house, to install a new garage access door (the current one wouldn't withstand the weather elements) with a built-in doggy door. Having a construction background, I knew that it was very important to hire an experienced person when hanging doors. Doug instructed me to get the dog door that I wanted prior to him showing up and he would put it in for me. Doug was supposed to be at the house at 7 am, however, he arrived 15 minutes early (rarely in these days). He had the old jamb out and the new door fit in about 30 minutes. When it was completed, the door looked like it had been there for 40 years. Very professional install, that's what happens when you hire someone with a contractor's license whose number is 742587 and has what I have come to learn is over 25 years, in California, installing doors. Last year, in December; I called on Doug again but with a very different problem. I hired a General Contractor (GC) to rehab my mother-in-law's rental house. The GC was to replace all interior, exterior and metal security doors. When I took my mother-in-law to look at the rehab progress we saw disturbing door hanging practices, such as exterior doors having been installed with spray foam insulation and a few screws. The back, exterior door of which the contractor disturbingly bought and installed an out-swing door. When we followed up with the GC, the response was along the lines of "...we put in like for like. If you want it done different do it yourself." What happened to doing it correctly the first time? With that said, I called Doug at Gillespie Doors and he moved around his schedule to get me in the next day. Upon arrival he noticed several items that were incorrect with the doors that my GC installed, and only a licensed door professional would be able to tell these issues: The entry door that the GC installed was placed over the old rotten oak sill, which Doug found was loose and the GC tried to fix it in place with expanding spray foam insulation. That did not work because, after Doug removed the poorly installed pre-hung unit, the oak sill literally fell out. While removing the pre-hung unit, Doug noticed that there were hardly any shims holding the frame in place, but instead the GC had screwed the door jamb in place (roughly), and then filled it in with foam insulation and without any shims so nothing was plumb or square. This then caused the entry door to rub on the floor when opened halfway, and would not allow for carpet or padding for that matter. On the rear door of the house, Doug found the GC installed that as poorly as the front door as it also had the expanding foam insulation and very few shims, but it was the WRONG door completely. The GC bought an out swinging door, and installed it backwards to swing in. If the GC would have left that in place, in Doug's estimation, it would have leaked like a sieve. Doug also noticed on this door that the installer had filled a gap in the rough opening with small pieces of 1" x 4" when a single piece was called for. Doug is a hard worker and knows his trade. Hanging doors is an art and from the examples above a GC shouldn't be screwing around hanging doors. Doug correctly installed my Entry Door along with the Rear Door. He also re-hung the security doors that my GC took off that never re-installed. Doug went so far above and beyond that he helped me fix an interior door that the GC never cut the bottom off to allow for carpet. I am totally satisfied with the workmanship from Doug. I will only be calling him to handle all of my door projects in the future. read more

Well, it's been over two and a half years since I first met Doug. My husband and I recently had a new kitchen floor installed and had some problems with the door after the work was completed. Doug has performed two different jobs for us over the last year. Both involved replacing interior doors and frames. One of them required some custom fitting of standard bi-fold doors into a tight laundry area. Doug offered a couple of thoughts about how to best accomplish our wishes, including door, hinge, hardware and molding selections. He was accurate and on-time for all of the work, from the initial estimates through the timely completion of both jobs. His work was neat and he cleaned up any mess before leaving, including hauling away the old doors and hardware. About the only thing that could have been better was if Doug also did the final paint and trim work required to completely finish both jobs. My Husband and I are still shaking our heads in disbelief. I contacted Doug after finding his website with beautiful front door installations.
