If you are single in Salem and want to give yourself a decadent treat look no further, this is what you have been waiting for. From a taste perspective the donut was great, there were many unique flavors to choose from. My family was all happy about the trip to The Dough Hook donut shop. I like the ever popular maple bacon and it was epic. My family equally liked their selections. The location is a bit hard to find without a sign I assume they are working on it as there is a place for a sign. I used gps said I was there had to search around I almost left but my wife spotted it first. From a cost perspective I'm not sure how long people will pay $3.95 for a single donut after the novelty wares off. There should be a special of some type for the families who are buying many donuts, what's $3.95 x 6 if you get my drift. These are Beverly Hills prices in a North Salem strip mall, we drove from Monmouth to try them for the novelty of trying the new spot from a point of value we might come back next year to try something new, I'm not down with paying premium in basically the low level strip mall especially with the type of stores that surround it and the traffic that comes through while you are waiting in the parking lot. We were not approached or bothered in any way but it's not the best area which you can tell in about 3 minutes sitting in the parking lot, my car got bass rattled by a low rider and multiple transients roamed through eyeing things. When my wife told me the prices I just felt like it should be in a better area. It's hard starting a new unknown business, can't start in the finest location but if there is a compromise like coming to the hood for donuts people should kind of be aware of that before driving from 45 minutes away. If my review seems harsh I'm just keeping it real. I would recommend you try them for yourself. read more

Omg, the people who work here are the best! I had a snafu with my online order, and they totally honored it and made it work for me, and were so sweet about it. My dad and I were driving the U-haul (it was day two of moving to Oregon) and this was our last stop of the entire move. We ate the pastries for days in my new apartment! They had a special order for them so they didn't have any made, but the lady offered to make me one if I was willing to wait a couple minutes. Excellent customer service and I'll definitely be back! This place makes delicious donuts!! My favorite? The crème brûlée!!! It had that hard sugar crust on top and a well done vanilla custard inside. It was smaller than the very large yeast donuts, but very satisfying. The other donuts were fantastic too. I liked the Marion Berry with the lemon drizzle, a good combination of tart and sweet. The dough they make is so good!! I will be back to try some other of there very large selection of flavors. The even have danishes. They are pricey, but I think you get your monies worth. read more

A friend and I went here today after one of his coworkers brought in donuts and conchas from The Dough Hook, and I am so thankful that Salem now has a quality donut shop! HOLY. SMOKES. This is honestly the best donut I've ever had in my life! They had just pulled fresh donuts from the fryer and were hand-glazing donuts as we walked in. I had a simple glazed donut while it was still warm, and it was AMAZING. For only $2, it was twice the size and thickness of a regular donut, and it was so fluffy and delicious. The air pockets inside the dough were a thing of beauty, and the glaze wasn't too thick or sticky. I was so impressed! I can't wait to come back here again and try more of their flavors! I wanted to rate this neighborhood donut shop higher but can't at their price point. They are located in a rather shabby strip mall off Lancaster so I honestly don't know how they attract clientele with their $3 to $2.75/piece price range. The donuts look pretty, sure, and are fairly large, but they are quite heavy and of the four flavors I tried: Boston cream, vanilla bean, maple, and marionberry - I'd only ever order the marionberry again. The cream in the Boston cream didn't taste like a traditional Boston cream and the chocolate glaze was a bit too bitter. The vanilla bean was slightly better - as was the maple, but still not very true to flavor. The marionberry icing was the best of this bunch. In total, $14.25 for 5 donuts bought after 1 pm was too pricey and I will not be returning any time soon. If they dropped their prices (even if they had to make the donuts a bit smaller) and worked to improve their donuts to be more airy and with better icing flavors I wouldn't hesitate to come back. Until then, unfortunately, I can't rate them higher than a 3. Also, bc your box is your main advertising - I'd highly suggest getting boxes with your logos on them. The nondescript brown box isn't doing you any good. read more

I've been here a couple times since they first opened, and their recipe or as I called it texture of the dough has gotten better since I first tried it. It's definitely more chewy, soft and fluffy. Taste more like donuts whereas it was dry and tasted more like Mexican bread when I first tried it. I always go for their crēme brûlée every time. It's definitely my favorite. The filling is very creamy and has a vanilla tasting custard. I got a berry danish which was fluffy, crispy, and yummy. I've also tried their Marionberry but I felt that was lack of flavor or not true to flavor as it should be. It is slightly oily. One of my factor is that they are not very sweet. They have a variety of flavors to choose from! I love how you can see the work in progress with the open workspace. Their service is why I'm giving it a four stars instead of five, but it's understandable with the pace they have to serve people when there's a line outside the door. Finally an amazing donut shop outside of Portland. Lots of interesting choices and flavors. I think the best is the creme brûlée donut. The filling is vanilla cream and I taste and see real, fresh vanilla in it. On top of that, they actually make a sugar crackle on top of the donut like you'd find on creme brûlée.
