I should have read all the reviews before I scheduled a consultation. I can tell you that when I made my first call, I asked if they were a blue shield provider. I was told Yes so I scheduled a consultation. Nadine took me around and did all the tests and she was lovely. Three hours later and I get to speak to Micah in accounting who explains to me the surgery is around $6000 but she does not know my insurance benefits at the time and she will Email me. I receive the email 2 days later with an outline and I am told that my insurance has a high deductible and will not cover any of the cost but I can get a $500 cash discount. Obviously, I was confused because I have a pretty good health plan. I then contacted Blue Shield directly and was told that this doctor is not in network. 3 hours wasted of my time! It's been 5 mos since my RLE surgery and I can say without question that my surgery was worth every penny of the 10 to $12,000.00 you might spend on this operation. I went to Dr. D for an exam after I read about the relatively new "Raindrop" implant that might allow me to throw out my reading glasses. I would have been a good candidate for that procedure, but after simulating what monovision was going to be like (with the use of contacts), I did not like that option. After extensive eye exams Dr D told me that I was a great candidate for Refractive Lens Exchange. I spoke to Dr D that day in what I would describe as several 5 minute bursts.... Talk a few minutes, test some more, talk again. My initial visit lasted almost 4 hours. (your experience may not be the same). DR D is obviously very busy, but is also a good listener, and I never felt rushed. I walked out of the office that day with a lot of information, and a quote. I researched RLE on the web, read reviews, and even watched a surgery on Youtube (not for the squeamish). The consent forms make it very clear that I might still need to wear reading glasses after the surgery, but I knew from my research that 87% of the patients that got my lens reported never needing reading glasses. I liked those odds, so I proceeded. The surgery was fast and painless. I did experience severe headaches the night of the surgery due to my intraocular pressure rising. That was quickly mitigated the following morning during a scheduled appt, and follow ups were scheduled to make certain the pressure was under control. I would gladly trade one sleepless night for years of life without glasses. I have been 20/15 since one week after surgery and my distance and reading vision is perfect... I can read super small fonts. The common side effect of nighttime halos is inescapable, but I don't find them to be that annoying. I drive at night without hesitation. Everyone at DR D's office is professional and caring. My follow-up appts have been with Dr Youcefi, who is great. I am so glad that I got this procedure done. Zero regrets. read more

I went for 2 consults and decided to have Dr. Bala @ Dougherty Vision Center do my LASIK, which I had done yesterday. I was debating between SMILE & Lasik. First consult I went to was at CCRS which I'd seen referrals for Dr Lee & his clinic were fine- but they heavily promote being able to do surgery the same day as your consult...which ok, sure. but then they couldn't really give me a a straight answer on if they recommend Lasik over SMILE. SMILE seems like a better choice- no flap, faster recovery, same price. When I went to see Dr Bala- she did a more in depth consult actually measuring the thickness of my cornea w a little pokey stick thing. I spent more time w the dr in the consult. When I asked about SMILE vs Lasik, and shared my current thoughts based on research & my other consult, she told me their practice had seen more complications including worse halos and dry eye w SMILE, DESPITE the fact that it's promoted as being less dry eye inducing, and that their practice had fallen out of favor w SMILE and she would suggest LASIK. She went deep into all my questions about what kind of impact it would take for my cornea to shatter post Lasik (something that's scared me from Lasik in the past) and went in depth in quelling my fear about head impact eye injury post LASIK. She also explained in depth what would happen if an earthquake occurred during the procedure (if there is an earthquake during a Lasik procedure the machine will stop the procedure and save its spot where it left off so that when it is deemed safe it can complete the procedure. Dr Bala explained the safety of the machines and the importance of patients safety which was very reassuring and important to me.), and in terms of scheduling, they separate pre-op and surgery by a week, very much not pushing any sort of one-stop shop ness. Also on Dr Balas IG which I looked at before going in for my consult, she had a video of another doctor who went to her for his Lasik....which sealed the deal for me. Additionally they accept VSP and offer a VSP discount! Had the 2 laser Z-Lasik procedure yesterday, and it was completely painless, and I immediately could see clearly, and the next day now that my eyes have rested and the haziness has gone away I am literally a CHANGED PERSON. First and foremost, Dr. Dougherty cares about his patients and stands by them. My situation was apparently more difficult than most. I had Lasik 15 years prior to Dr. Dougherty performing a lens exchange on my left eye. Due to the prior Lasik, there were some issues with aberrations and/or other issues preventing me from getting good vision out of my lens exchange eye. Where did all of the bad reviews go? Dr Dougherty must have ADD/ADHD for he spends no more than 2 minutes talking to you in which 30 seconds of that is examining your eyes. He talks super fast - which makes you feel like he is in a rush and all he talks about is how great he is and how he can make you see better. And because he is not personable and talks to you in such an arrogant and condescending way, it makes it difficult for me to ask him any questions. He has horrible bedside manners and his staff is incompetent. Every time I am at his office, I have had to wait 45+ minutes (sometimes over an hour), just so that he can see me for AGAIN 2 minutes. Oh, and he doesn't validate for parking either. He really needs a new management and staff where they can get everything straight. The staff once brought the wrong patient file out on me! Kind of scary if you think about. Oh, and he is here in the La office one day a week, which gives you NO flexibility on the appointment day/time. Since there were only few doctors in this area that performed ICL, I decided to go ahead with him. The day of the surgery is another horrific story. The staff made me sign the consent form MINUTES before the surgery and the lady who went over this important form was not properly trained nor was she even familiar with these important legal documents!!! I did not have a chance to review any of the important literature such as the risks involved in this surgery until literally MINUTES before I went under anesthesia. And sadly to this day, I still have not received a copy of what I signed on that day. His office has a nice view of the Hollywood sign but that's really the only thing nice there. read more

I had ICL surgery a week ago and am still giddy with excitement over (1) the ease of the surgery, (2) the sharpness of my vision, and (3) the warmth and support I received from the staff at Dougherty Laser Vision. Before my surgery, I had been wearing contacts/glasses for 20 years or so. Like many others, my prescription got progressively worse/higher during that time period. Recently, with the long hours spent pouring over documents at my job, I became increasingly bothered by contacts. Wearing glasses "full time" was out of the question due to my high prescription and I'm not really into that coke-bottle look :). So I started looking into vision correction surgery. I quickly learned that I was not an ideal candidate for Lasik with my high prescription and tendency toward dry eyes. Additionally, I'm very conservative and risk-averse when it comes to my health. In fact, ICL surgery was the first surgery I've ever had. So, I ruled out Lasik because I would have been a "borderline" patient. I discussed the possibility of ICL surgery with my optometrist who highly recommended Dr. Dougherty. After my initial consult, I knew I would be getting my ICL surgery with Dr. Dougherty and his team because, even at my first visit, it was clear that these people know what they're doing. I'm a firm believer that nothing beats experience, and it's very apparent that Dr. Dougherty is very experienced with ICL (and other corrective eye procedures). In the weeks leading up to my surgery date, I became increasingly nervous and anxious. I admit to spending at least a few nights googling all the risks and possible complications until the wee hours of the morning. On multiple occasions, I reached out to Ilyce, a patient coordinator, with barrage of questions. And each time, Ilyce was super patient, warm, and understanding. If she didn't have the answers to my questions, she worked tirelessly to get them for me. Thank you, Ilyce! The day of my surgery, I was very excited but also very nervous---I had made the mistake of viewing several youtube videos of actual surgeries the night before (don't do this). I explained to Renata, one of the nurses, that I have a history of panic attacks. She was so warm and reassuring that I calmed down immediately and had no issues during the surgery. The surgery itself went smoothly and----most important to the patient----quickly. Dr. Dougherty's skill and experience were to thank for this. It must've been less than 10 minutes. No pain at all. As you can tell by now, I'm a nervous nellie who tends to overthink things. So, when I say the surgery was a piece of cake, I really mean it. Immediately after the surgery, my vision was a little bit blurry but I had no problem seeing my surroundings and making my way home. Within an hour after my surgery, I could watch CNN and make out all the words flashing across the screen. The next morning, I went in for my post-op follow-up----I could make out letters on the 20/15 line!! Amazing!!! I went for a full day of hiking that same day. A week out, I am told my incisions have completely healed with no issues and the ICL placement is perfect. I have absolutely no redness in my eyes and my vision is getting sharper every day. All in all, the surgery was one of the best things I've ever done and I can't believe I waited so long to do it. I wake up every morning with sharp vision and end every day without having to pry dried out contacts off my eyeballs. Life changing, to say the least. Dr. Dougherty did my implant surgery for the ICL lens for $6000 back in 2009. So far my vision is good. Don't know what will be the side effect in the long term. That goes with any foreign object implant in your body. My left eye was 20/400 and 20/200 right eye. Now my left eye is 20/40 and my right eye is 20/20. It also depends on how many hours I slept. To me the surgery was quick but painful leaving bruising and scar tissues. It took about a month to heal. Now, I think the lens material is better due to the technology and improvement made for people with astigmatism. Do your research before surgery. read more

I was referred to Dr. Dougherty by my long time ophthalmologist who had also had iCL surgery by Dr. Dougherty. I am extremely near-sided (-14/14.5) with an astigmatism in both eyes and a cornea too thin to be corrected by Lasik. I have known about ICL since approximately 2003 when it was just starting to be done here in the US. I knew it was my only option to be free of glasses and contacts, which did not even correct for my vision completely. Being a Nurse, I am very aware of how medical practices run, what bedside manner should be, and customer service expectations. At Dougherty Laser Vision, the staff was always warm, unrushed, and helpful. Dr. Dougherty can be a little quick and appear rushed, but he will take the time to answer questions and pause to give you his full attention. I never felt my questions went left unanswered. The day of surgery was a bit longer than I expected, with waiting time, time allowed for dilation of the eye, and extra testing, but I understand that some things cannot be rushed and should not be, especially in medicine. My surgery went as expected, and I am extremely pleased with the results. My night vision is the most impressive, giving me what I call "laser vision". I started to see halos around lights and "starbursts" sometimes at night about a week after the surgery. I have been told is normal. I had problems with headaches and migraines for about a week after the surgery and I attribute this to the eye/brain's change in focus and healing process. My headaches have resolved now, It is still amazing me to to wake up and see in the morning, and to see people across the room without contacts + glasses. I am finally free! The waiting area is nice, attractive decor, the staff is nice and I've always had a good experience here. The building is pretty accessible. i am a surgeon myself. i have had the privilege of obtaining both MD and DDS degrees in my professional life. i have done oral surgery, and had a second year general surgery residency at harvard, specializing in craniofacial surgery as well as oral surgery. i taught full-time two years at harvard, doing some lecturing, but mostly spent time operating on my patients with the residents, first assisting me. sorry to belabor this, but you must know i have been "around". i have seen and worked with the best. i have practiced here in westlake village and simi valley full-time since i stopped teaching in boston. i needed two cataracts removed a few months ago, and virtually all of my great ophthalmological peers told me to see dr. dougherty. i was going to see him anyway. it was a no brainer. i didn't need to be reminded. well, i am three months postop. i have 20/20 vision in both eyes...really 20/15 (after a short lasik procedure on one eye we needed to fully buff me up). i need no glasses. he runs an AMAZING office. not unlike a beehive. he is the "queen". optometrists, front and back office personnel do their jobs beautifully all around him. i have never seen anything like it. four locations. a lot of his personnel follow him where ever he goes from office to office. he is ALWAYS on time. he is professional, all his staff are top notch. i cannot recommend a health professional more highly. i totally trusted his abilities and i haven't been disappointed whatsoever. if i were to move anywhere else, and needed ANYTHING related to surgery or an eye evalutuation there is no other person i would seek help and information from. yes, he is busy...but sometimes it is worth it, isn't it. he is busy for a reason. he is able to overcome it, with aplomb. you will be extremely lucky (and smart) if you chose to place yourself in the hands of this man of genius. read more

When I researched LASIK, I was a little skeptical at first, mostly because around my area (Palmdale) there weren't many doctors with much of a track record. I had gone many years dealing with less than perfect vision, squinting my way through life. Not any more! I decided to have surgery back in November, I was so afraid and like many the worst thoughts came to mind "what if I lose my vision" and so on. After working with one of the top refractive surgeons in the U.S. for 3 years, I decided to stop letting fear keep me from having perfect vision and allow Dr. Dougherty to work his magic. I ended up having PRK in Beverly Hills as that was the best laser to treat my prescription (dlv has 3 different lasers). Although my recovery took a bit longer than if I had, had Lasik. Let me start by saying the level of professionalism at this practice surpassed my expectations, to start when I called the person I spoke to was very helpful and offered me the very soonest appointment! I recently had Lasik at Dougherty Laser Vision in June of 2010 and I have had problems with my eyes ever since. It seems like they are continually having turnover issues with new eye doctors and their customer service always seems inexperienced. Dr. Dougherty completed one initial follow-up and has not seen me ever since? I'm not sure if other Lasik Surgical Centers are better or worse, but I do know that I'm left continually wondering if I should have had my procedure elsewhere. read more

I had my first eye done and was so surprised how easy and wonderful everything went. I had no idea I was not seeing things as they really were and could not believe the difference between the eye that was corrected and the one that was not. Dr. Dougherty was great and I am so happy to have finally taken care of the problem. I am now looking forward to having the other eye taken care of as well.
