I have always loved Doug's. Old school breakfast place that delivers delicious food and cool ambience. The decor is old school movie posters and pictures. Love looking at all of them. Service is fast and friendly. Drinks were consistently refilled whether it was coffee, Coke or water. Food was delicious. They were able to make changes to both omelettes. Removing and adding ingredients easily with no hassle. Only issue was the Garlic fries were a disappointment. It's literally minced garlic on top of the fries. My son, his friend and I went here after church last week, lured by a recent Tiktoker's review of the uniquely creative pancakes. The place has a homey seventies diner feel, with cool and interesting paintings on the wall and awesome blue glass in the partitions when you first walk in. Staff were all polite, helpful and friendly. My son ordered the Biscoff cookie pancake and the ube pancake. His friend ordered the Oreo pancake, and I ordered the crab cake benedict. When it comes to creativity,the fellas and I gave Doug's an A+. Taste-wise, the guys said the pancakes were decent but not amazing, that they were a bit too dense and not fluffy enough. My son did say though that the Biscoff pancakes were super delicious. My hashbrowns and eggs were decent, but the crab cakes were nothing to write home about. While fried just right, they tasted pretty fishy, which means they probably weren't very fresh. Maybe Doug's uses canned crab for their crab cakes, in which case I recommend they use fresh crab and charge more for the dish. All in all I give Doug's three and a half stars. read more

Short version: Food was fine, but the service needs work. Long version: They double charged us for a drink. We were settling the tab within the group at the counter and told one cashier we were double charged. Another worker (without telling us) closed the ticket and made us pay for the extra drink while we were trying to resolve it with the other worker. They also came to check on us just once after we got our food then we had to flag them down to check out and get take-out. As far as ambiance, the restaurant is bigger than I expected. Old Western movie posters on the walls, string lights across the room, stained glass lamps. Wooden interiors. It's cozy and comfortable. Good place to go as a group or a breakfast date. Traditional breakfast fare -- omelettes, sandwiches, pancakes, French toast, etc. The corned beef hash was good. Their drink menu is limited, basically coffee and some fruit juices. Lots of parking available because of Lucky's next door. If you want a traditional breakfast experience, go here. This place keeps disappointing. The first time we came there was nothing appetizing. I ordered the simple breakfast. It was plain and simple. Hubby had ordered the chillaquilles and he said they were blah. They did not look good. He offered me a taste and the tortillas were chips! Who uses chips for chillaquilles?! And they tasted stale. The only reason we came back on Mother's Day was, because the coffee shop next door had too many people. And I had limited time. I cannot recall what my sister in law ordered, but it came with country potatoes. The potatoes were so plain. Nothing added, no seasoning, no mixed veggies. Honestly nothing about them made them country. My brother in law ordered pancakes. Again plain - he said they were so dry and hard to cut into. Hubby ordered an omelet. He said it was alright. I had only a Belgian waffle. I only ate half. But what killed it for me was the coffee. I've never not drunken my coffee. This was a first. It was so bad and I don't mean strong. Came here with a large group of friends and they were able to accommodate all of us. The wait staff was friendly and all except one order right but they were fine about fixing it. I took pics of everyone's food but didn't sample theirs. I'll just make a few comments from the people I sat closest to. Fried chicken and waffle 3/5: sounded promising but the chicken was small and it was not de-boned so it was pretty disappointing. the waffle wasn't anything standout special. cheeseburger and fries 4/5: The burger was a decent size but I wish they would offer other cheese choices besides american cheese. makes it feel like they don't want to splurge but get a pack do the cheapest cheese possible. i get it tho, times are tough everywhere. We used to like having breakfast here. Today the food was greasy and didn't taste good. Even my 2 year old grandson didn't like it! To top it off when I was eating my hash browns I felt something hard in my mouth! I pulled out a plastic tie that holds a loaf of bread closed!!! I stopped eating my breakfast!! Such a great experience overall! Came on a Sunday morning around 10:30 and was seated right away. Staff was quick to ask for drinks and get our orders and checked on us an appropriate amount of times throughout the meal. Food was SO good! We got the fruity pebbles pancakes, a breakfast burrito, and side of bacon with coffee and orange juice. The pancakes were so good we both said we think the crunchy texture of the fruity pebbles fixed our disdain for the texture of mushy pancakes. These were delicious! The only thing I'd change is that I wish it came with a tiny extra side of condensed milk in a little spout jar to drizzle on top. After trying other breakfast establishments in Castro Valley, Doug's Place still holds a special place in my heart. Service was good with regular drop by's inquiring whether or not we needed water or anything else. Other than this, I had forgotten that when you get the bill you need to bring it to the front, as opposed to waiting for the credit card payment to come back. Food was great with crispy edges on the hash brown & Cornbeef hash. Price was reasonable at $15.50 for the Cornbeef hash & for the omelette at $16.75. I had asked to split a plate & they were so kind to plate it for me as opposed to me separating it out myself. It's little gestures like this that make me patronize this place more, so thank you. The eggs Benedict was a little cold unfortunately, nothing spectacular. The omelette was very good, I enjoyed every bite! Now for the pancakes... I was let down. I came here yesterday, Monday morning, for breakfast with my work team. We had a $20 budget per person and one of my coworkers suggested this spot. I've never been here before so I was excited to try something new. I usually stick to the same breakfast places so it was a nice change. The other options were bacon or ham, which was surprising because I usually see chorizo or asada offered with Chilaquiles. I asked for my hashbrowns with grilled onions since I saw that in a lot of photos and requested them extra crispy. Eggs over medium. I also got an orange juice. Unfortunately the service was super slow. Even my coworker who recommended the place and lives in Castro Valley said he was surprised at how slow it was. Food took about 45 minutes to come out and my orange juice did not show up until around the 30-minute mark. The only time service felt on point was after the food finally arrived when they started checking on us more. The Chilaquiles were just okay. A little on the dry side. Hashbrowns were solid. The sausage tasted like a bulk pork sausage nothing special. Orange juice was fresh and good. Portions were huge though which I appreciated. I found this breakfast spot thanks to Instagram. The pancake flight is what interested me to come here. We came with five people (two adults and three children). The kids split the pancake flight (fruit pebbles, Oreo, and substituted for the Biscoff pancake) and two sides of bacon. The adults got the Chantum omelette with added spinach and Doug's Omelette with avocado on the side (I'm not a fan of warm avocado). The girls eyes got so big when the pancake flight came out. All the flavors were good but my favorite was the fruity pebbles. The omelettes are a good size and they don't skimp out on the additions inside the omelette. The one thing that will make me not want to come back here is the state of their bathrooms. One was occupied so I cannot speak to that one but the one to the right were gross. read more

Party of 4 on Saturday morning. 11/8/2025 My granddaughter picked to go here for the pancake trio she seen on IG. We arrived and were sat promptly. Service was good. The ambience is basic, which is fine as not everywhere needs to be super aesthetic, but still could use some deep cleaning. As far as the food is concerned, everything is just OK. The pancakes seem like they're just being popped out on maybe an auto pancake maker, they are not light and fluffy, more dense and dry. My daughter and I split the green sauce chilaquiles and I would never order that again. It was just blah. My husband ordered the Country fried steak, he was very happy with that and I did taste a bite, and it was good and tender. That we would order again. Wow! Impressively bad food. I was genuinely shocked that people pay to eat here, considering how terrible the food, ingredient quality, and taste (tasteless) are. The pancakes were rubbery, stale, and tasteless, served with just two small packets of CORN Syrup. The eggs, also tasteless, had cheddar cheese when I specifically asked for American cheese. The hash browns were bland and half-cooked. The bacon was very crispy and above all, the highlight. However, one piece was just a thick chunk of pure fat and inedible. Overall, please do not go here. The food is extremely bad. You can do better for less money at home. Nothing on the menu is special or difficult to make. There are many, many better breakfast options in Castro Valley and all the nearby cities. I've tried most within a 20-mile radius, and this is definitely the worst of all. Again, wow! I am truly floored by how bad the food is, how many people come here, and how long it's been open. Crazy. If I could give negative stars, I would. We put our names down for a party of 3 and prob took about 20 minutes to be seated. All the staff was super busy. The place looks like a favorite that's been around a long time, for good reason. The portions are huge and the food is delicious. My Doug's Omelette was way enough for this meal and the next. The hash browns were particularly good - they were super crispy, as they should be. Getting a table is quite confusing. There is a paper waiting list but you wait in line to be seated. No one explained or said anything so other people were confused as well. We did have great service ordering our food and the food came out fast. The food was fine. However, when they brought out my husband's food they dropped one of his pieces of toast on the table and the guy just said sorry and left. They never replaced the toast especially since they just wipe down the tables with a wet cloth. Overall, the experience was okay. I was charged by mistake another parties bill in February of this year and I still haven't received a refund to my credit card. I notified my card customer service and still haven't gotten my refund. The guy that gave me a receipt stating that it was a delivery error told me 3-5 days to credit my account. I've made 2 visits to the establishment to resolve this issue but still progress. I spoke to Manuel each time I visited. Now my next move is to take them to small claims.... This is terrible! You take my money because of your mistake and refuse to credit my account.
