The Dow Villa is the best place to stay in Lone Pine. We had an upstairs room that was larger and had a nice view of the mountains. This is the place to stay if your in Lone Pine. It is in the center of town and a short walk to most of the places to eat in town. read more

The Dow Villa Motel, built about 100 years ago, is a really great place to stay and the old hotel has a lot of character. Filming crews used to stay at the Dow when they came up to the Owens Valley to film westerns, back in the day. The old hotel has been very well preserved, the upkeep is great. The place is quiet the beds are comfortable and you can stay in the old hotel for as low as $85.00/night if you don't mind walking down the hall to use the bathroom/showers. They also have rooms w/ bathroom included and a newer building but of course, it's higher. It's better than any place to stay in Bishop (1 hour away) or Mammoth (2 hrs away) for far less money, and a lot more charm. read more

Stayed in the old hotel part for the first time and it wasn't bad! I loved the funky faded old feel to this place. A real deal too at 99/night. Water pressure was a little underwhelming in the shower and the toilets seemed a little iffy, but you're staying in a piece of history so get over it. Front desk staff were very accommodating and pleasant and there's a cute little courtyard squished in between the two hotel wings. Oh and the pool was great. Cold, but nice. That's it. We decided that after 3 nights of camping we should probably book a hotel room for the 4th night. So we booked a week ahead of time on booking.com and got a room for under $100.00. Well after spending 19 hours on the Mt Whitney Trail, we were very grateful to have a hot shower and a warm bed to sleep in. Definitely worth it after 3 nights of camping. The parking spots are a bit short and small. When we checked in at 10pm, we were starving and asked if anything was open, and they told us the gas station. Hungry hikers told to get gas station food because that's the only thing that's open according to the concierge does not make for happy guests. Lucky for us, Carl's Jr was still open!!! Lone Pine is tiny, please update yourself on what's open if you are working concierge at a hotel, thanks. Beds were ok, I felt like I was gonna fall off the edge at times cuz it sloped downward. read more

Rolled in really late on a week night and booked this place in hopes to get a great night sleep before our long journey to Mt. Whitney. What I missed to verify before booking... there's two separate buildings, the Dow Villa Hotel and the Dow Villa Motel. I was reading reviews prior to booking and decided to go for it since the price was reasonable. The Hotel is the older building (what we booked by surprise since the third party booking website we used didn't indicate which one). This is the historical part of the hotel, no a/c, outdated interior, bathrooms are old, the bed was okay but the sheets were clean and the towels were freshly laundered. We got a private bath but looks like a Jack and Jill bathroom that could be easily accessed by the room next door. We had to go up the stairs from the lobby to get to our room. The lobby is decked out in a lot of memorabilia from the 1920's (when the hotel was built). Definitely feels historic, which was cool - it's just that we had to open our windows for air flow and the noise from the cars driving by wasn't giving us a good night's sleep. Parking was easy and the location is central to everything. Check in was a breeze, they still use regular metal keys for the rooms. Maybe we'll try staying at the newer "Motel" part for next time. Based on reviews, it's a little bit higher in price but the rooms are bigger, and the amenities newer and has a/c. It's also tucked behind the hotel so I'm assuming it's not getting as much drive by noise. read more

I've stayed in both sides of Dow Villa, hotel and motel, and I have only good things to say about the place. It's a historic spot along a historic highway. Very clean. Very comfortable. People need to understand something about this property before leaving a review. There are TWO SIDES to this business; an old vintage hotel that does not have A/C and has shared bathrooms (just like OLD hotels used to have) and a more modern MOTEL that in my opinion is the best motel in Owens Valley for the price to stay at. Both sides are clean and well maintained, but you have to have the proper expectations if you stay in the older hotel part and your reviews should reflect which part you stayed in. read more

Stayed here for a night on our travels. Like other Yelp reviews, I must say the rooms are not what you'd expect when you see the exterior. Very nice on the inside, updated for sure. We had a fridge and microwave, and a coffee maker. Bed was pretty comfy, and TV had a huge variety of channels (huge!). The toiletries they offer smelled wonderful too. Staff was courteous and helpful. The only real bummer was the hot tub, and that's probably because I was really looking forward to it. It was on the shallow side (I am only 5'2")--sitting on the bench seat the water didn't cover my chest. And the jets were almost non-existent. Cockroaches everywhere -- by the pool, near the ice machine (avoid the ice, by the way), and, of course, in the room. We stayed at the newer motel, so don't be fooled into thinking it's just the historic wing that's infested. Beds were OK and service was friendly, but frankly I'd rather have an uncomfortable bed and terrible service if it meant no roaches. Air conditioning unit is loud, maybe to distract you from the sound of (you guessed it) scattering roaches. read more

I have not stayed at a lot of motels, but I can confidently affirm that this is the best motel I have had the pleasure of visiting. The mighty Sierra Nevada mountains burst into view as soon as you exit your motel room. The swimming pool is crowded with Germans and French families on holiday from Europe. The Dow Villa is in the middle of Lone Pine with easy walking access to restaurants to enjoy with your family. And it is very affordable. I took my three year old son up the Whitney Portal to experience a Cathedral of Nature. He cried the entire time demanding to get back the motel swimming pool. You get the idea. read more

Rooms have no thermostats, no heating/cooling system .... was forced to pull extra blanket out of closet to keep from freezing. I am writing this review to give a shout out to Ben, the shift manager. He was extremely helpful in gaining back my future business after having a very poor experience in the way I was treated for exceeding the number of dogs per room. As an FYI, and hopefully they will update their pet policy on their website soon, there is a TWO DOG LIMIT. This is something I was not told of before-hand, and my friend and I showed up with our 4 dogs after driving 4 hours. After checkout, we were falsely accused by the housekeepers of having 5 dogs in our room and then charged an additional fee of $50. I, of course, was livid about that since I was never told about the two dog limit upfront when I made my reservation for a pet-friendly room and had to find that out when I called in to question the charge on my card. The manager, Yolanda, wasn't in when I called so I had to call back the next day to speak with her to try to get it resolved, which it was not. I awaited her call back after she was going to speak to the owner and get back to me that day, but never did. So I called back again yesterday, and after having a belittling phone experience with her, I called back again this morning to speak with the owner to see if they could make things right. I didn't speak with the owner but rather Ben took my information and promised to call me back after he looked into it. He followed through on his promise and called me back within the hour to say he would reverse the charges. He was very empathetic and agreed that they need to ensure customers upfront about the two dog limit and said he would see to it that customers are told this going forward when making their pet-friendly room reservations. This is the kind of customer service that is appreciated when something goes wrong. And Ben deserves a promotion to manager!! Thank you, Ben, for making things right! I have recommended many hiking friends to stay here in the past, which they have and they did on this trip, and I will continue to do so again thanks to you! As far as the motel itself, I have stayed here almost every time I've hiked Mt. Whitney. I've always had a good experience and the rooms and beds have always been comfortable. I will say that they need to work on the room key access, at least for the room we had (#14). It was a struggle trying to get the door to open with the room key. The green light would turn on, but the door wouldn't open. We fumbled with this almost every time we tried accessing the room, so that was a bit frustrating. But overall, and aside from the bad experience regarding the pet-policy issue which thankfully turned out okay in the end, I would recommend this place as a convenient place to stay in Lone Pine. read more

Dow Villa is probably as motel as it gets. Not too fancy or great but a good place to stop off for a night. Instead of braving the cold in the mountains for a night, my boyfriend and I found the Dow Villa to be the cheapest option online and booked. We stayed in the Historic hotel which doesn't have all the amenities that the newer portion does. We stayed in a room without a public bathroom, so we had to use the one in the hall. Our room had a full size bed, a TV that we didn't use, and a sink. No mini fridge but since we were only here for a night, it was fine. I'd say it's worth it for the price you're paying. ALSO the outdoor heated spa is glorious when it's less than 40 degrees outside after a loong and strenuous hike. read more

It hopes we've learned something from yesterday -- John Wayne The Dow Villa Hotel was built in the 1920's and hosted a variety of stars who filmed in the area such as John Wayne,William Boyd, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Pat Buttrum, Stewart Granger, Errol Flynn, Robert Mitchum and Clayton Moore. (You young yelpers probably have absolutely no idea who those people are). The Motel section was added in the 1960's and has been completely refurbished. For the first night of our road trip, my son and I stayed in the hotel section in a clean efficient room with two queen beds. No shared bathroom, we had our own. Close to the small town's restaurants and "night life", I could see this bit of kitsch being a favorite place to stay if you come to hike or climb Whitney. No free breakfast though as I believe some of the other motels have but I could not have reserved a room for only $72.00 at those other places either. There is the Dow Villa Hotel and the Dow Villa Motel the hotel is the old part of the "Hotel" is the part attached to the office the room are connecting and some/all bathroom are shared (I am not sure) The Motel is the adjoining outside parking room right out your door rooms. I am reviewing the Motel everything is updated, rooms are clean wifi is FREE and your car is outside your door. There is a blow dryer and coffee maker with coffee. Nice Tv Large clean rooms and you do not have to share a bathroom The walls are thick and private, if they are not then I am not sure what you are doing in there?! The Motel is on the inside edge of town but closer to the middle of town then the other one we were looking at. But everything is easily within in walking distance. If you feel like it take a walking tour of the Hotel some awesome pictures and props of the old westerns filmed here back in the day! The gentleman who checked us in left much to be desired, he quoted us a price we asked about a aaa discount he said it was $10 off but when we signed the slip it was the same as the first price he told us?! But after 10 hours of driving I was not in the good so paid. The morning staff however was extremely nice and helpful. We are planning on trying to climb Mount Whitney next year, so we will be back and will be staying here! read more

The Dow Villa is an old '50s establishment. The older, original rooms have shared bathrooms (either between rooms or down the hall). There are sinks in the room with a tv, and a small closet. If you're used to modern motel rooms and do not like a place with a sense of history, you may not warm up to the Dow Villa However, if you like the charm of the older style, this place has qualities that may win you over. While there is a newer building with more modern features to the rooms there, I find the historical rooms to be both comfortable, charming, and a bargain. There is an ice machine in the lobby. There's an internet-capable computer terminal, comfortable chairs and sofa. There is a central courtyard with water fountains that are pleasant to hear splashing in the summer nights. It's rather fun to read all the articles and see the photos of how much movie-making went on in the Alabama Hills nearby when Westerns were big. The motel was established largely to cater to the film industry cliental. read more

As a big chain hotel goer.. I was concerned about staying in a motel in Lone Pine. But upon the easy checkin, nice clean rooms and friendly staff, those fears went away. I totally enjoyed our one night stay here. The TV, and the available channels were a plus, and the free wifi. It is also located in a great part of town, across the street from a good pizza place and very near the Alabama Hills Cafe the best place in town for breakfast. I will stay here again. read more

It got a little warm this time and no AC but still slept well. WIFI works best in lobby not so good in room 158 all the way in the back. King mattress was seriously bowed or dipped at sides. If I could, I would rate the newer inn side as 4 stars and the historic hotel as 2 stars. Summer of 2017 I stayed at the inn side twice prior to Whitney hikes. After staying at another dump the summer before, I was very pleasantly surprised. The room was clean, the beds were comfy, the wifi good and cheap, it was relatively roomy, and it had the amenities a hiker needs like a mini-fridge and microwave to heat up water for my morning oatmeal. Price was reasonable too. 4 stars. Stayed in the historic side of the hotel June 2018 prior to a Whitney hike since the other side was booked up. I was happy the rate was a little cheaper and figured I would have the same experience. Not! The room was teeny. The sink was in the room, not the bathroom. When I pulled the bed spread off, the once white comforter underneath was an off-white, yellow. The wifi apparently didn't reach into the depths of my room as I lost it at the lobby. And it was noisy. Hard to get to bed early and get a good nights rest before starting a 12 hour hike at O-dark thirty. I will stay in the newer side again, but if not available will take my chances with another alternative in town. read more

I was very happy with how clean the bathroom and our room was. They had make up removal wipes, shampoo, conditioner and soap that smelled really good. The towels and bed sheets were cleaned. Tiana the receptionist in the office had great customer service she gave me brochures and maps of things to do in the area. I will definitely stay here again. This is the best motel to stay in Lone Pine. Well, there is not a lot to choose from. The bed was comfy and I got hot water quickly. Sometimes you don't get hot water right away at fancy hotels. The location is near most reasons visitors travel of Lone Pine. I am so disappointed I have to write a bad review. I liked the hotel it was clean and cute. However, they double charged my card, Ariel was really nice, she said if I didn't stay there the day they charged me for by "error" then she would refund my card. She also said she would call me if there were any issues with my refund. A week later, no refund, no phone call. The guy working the desk today was rude and told me to call the third party that booked the room for me. I didn't use a third party. I think this is a scam, they charge people twice and make up excuses. read more

I stayed here twice recently, in the old hotel and the newer part. I prefer the newer part. It is higher in price but the rooms are generous size, great beds, a good bath. Properly air conditioned and dog friendly. Fridge and microwave, very handy to keep things cold in this desert area. The old hotel does not accept dogs, was quite small, ok for one person. I will stay here again in the newer section. Walk to restaurants, had a nice dinner nearby. Even right on 395 I didn't detect noise, partly because the AC covered the noise. Just ask during booking if you're getting a restroom in the room or not. I got lucky, because I didn't know at the time of booking! Kiddos stayed in the room with the John Wayne plaque (I guess he stayed there?), and kiddo no. 2 said the sofa is more comfortable to sleep on as a sofa than with the pull-out. H and I had a single bed room a bit down the hall of the older part, and it was fine. The shower space is tight if you are a big person, so just don't drop your soap! The wash basin and shave mirror are in the room with the bed, so it looks very much like something out of a 1930's movie! In fact, people in the film industry stayed here while filming in the Alabama Hills - that's a detour you must take! Do NOT stay in the "charming not-AAA-rated" hotel part. This seems to be an excuse for rundown, crummy rooms. The motel side is fine, and have stayed many times. Thought we'd try other side---whoops. It's dank and sad and depressing, not charming or old timey. As usual, staff is hit or miss, no idea if room is ready, and told they'd "lend us a space heater" when they had no idea radiator wasn't on (it went on eventually, but wasn't aware I was supposed to bring a space heater with me, how kind to offer to LEND me one, lol) Now I'll go ask for a bath stopper so my kid can take a bath, I guess I was meant to bring that too. Covid is no excuse here. Everything crummy is basic innkeeping, covid or not. I'm bummed, I liked the quirkiness of this place, now ill be stuck at a chain hotel instead. read more

We stayed in the Historical part of the hotel. Room 253. Very comfortable bed. Our room was right above the room where the ice machine was located and also where the main entrance is to the hotel. With the window kept closed that will eliminate all the noise. Parking was easy. Location is on the main strip, so everything is pretty much walking distance. The only time we used our vehicle was to go on our hike on the Mount whitney trail. Which is about a 15 minute drive from hotel. Room was very clean, bathroom was immaculately clean. We felt very comfortable in our room and we will definitely be returning to this hotel. read more
