I had a good feeling when I saw this place and I was spot-on! It turned out to be fantastic not only in price compared to others, but also in excellent service and decor. Front desk was very accommodating as I wanted to go swimming later at night. They have a very cozy and historic front room area that you can sit in twenty-four hours a day and read. This motel also chronicles much of the history of movie making in this area. To top it all off, it has been recently refurbished. I have traveled a bit in life and I am not given to hyperbole when I say that this is actually one of the best I've ever stayed in right here in little Lone Pine. Highly recommend! read more

Made the big move to LA with a giant Penske truck and this was the halfway point. Clean, reasonably priced rooms and plenty of parking for our big rig! Nothing fancy here, but served its purpose for a good night sleep before a million more hours of driving. Super young and friendly staff and were very flexible when our reservation had to be changed (repeatedly) Beautiful area, not a ton of dining options around here and the bar scene is pretty dismal. read more

I stayed at the Dow Motel a few nights ago while visiting the Owens Valley to attend a work-related meeting. I normally eschew motels that have private keyed entry on the outside / ground level, for safety reasons, and normally when I stay in hotel or motel rooms I feel compelled to open the closet door and peek behind the shower curtain and under the bed three or four times, at least, before I feel completely comfortable, but there's something about Lone Pine, and about the Dow Villa in particular, that made me feel instantly comfortable. A coworker and I made it through the check-in process in minutes, and I was rebooked from a two-queen room into a cheaper room with a single queen bed that hadn't been available when I'd called to make my reservation. My one complaint was that I'd also booked using my AAA discounted rate and when I was rebooked the room should have been $10 cheaper, but the counter person forgot to apply the AAA discount to the rebooked room and I forgot to double check, so my rate ended up being the same as I'd been quoted for 2 queens ($89/night). I didn't notice this until I was preparing my expense report for work, so I'd be sure to double check your bill while still at the counter. At this point (2 days later) I would feel stupid calling to ask for the $10 discount. We lugged our bags out of our rental car while a group of 10 or so young men watched from the upper balcony. Must have been some kind of movie crew or convention of some kind in town. Whoever they were, they were respectful and quiet - I never heard a peep from outside my door once I was safely locked inside. In testing the bed I thought it a bit soft, but after one night's sleep I felt no worse for wear and harbored no aches or pains, which was a pleasant surprise. The hotel has the obligatory giant flat screen TV with nearly 100 channels of pure crap, if you're into that sort of thing. Me? I did some sit-ups and pushups, read a journal article about the chemical constituency of the Owens Lakebed, and then put myself to bed. I was bummed that the coffee pot was a warped, stinky plastic piece of crap that reeked of tepid coffee because I am still getting over bronchitis and was really looking forward to a cup of hot herbal tea. However, I didn't want to run hot water through the crusty spout of the coffee pot and risk getting actual caffeine run-off, which would have kept me up all night, or bad-old-coffee-taste in my hot water, which would have ruined the whole tea-drinking ritual, so I went without. It was just as well, because I slept like a baby and woke with more energy than I'd had in weeks. My room, #10, faced southeast, so I got the early morning sun. It was gorgeous, but I felt self-conscious flinging open my blinds because someone had parked their RV behind the motel and right in front of my east-facing window. Bummer. After walking across the street to have a fantastic breakfast at the renowned Alabama Hills Cafe, I returned to my room, grabbed my crap, and checked out. As I was leaving Death Valley along the 190, I saw a trailer parked on the side of the road. It had the name of this place and their phone number. I kept a mental note of it, I was still really far out, but figured I'd give 'em a call when I got closer. In my brain, historical hotels tend to be pricey, but maybe not. A few hours later when the sun was setting, I showed up and I approached the counter. When I inquired. They had a room available in the 'historic hotel' part available, but not one in the 'non-historic' motel part. Hoo-boy. This was gonna be crazy expensive thought my brain. "It's 69.00 a night." Wha? That's practically Motel 6 cheap! Sold! Wait...What? You want me to check out the room first? Uh...ok? I went to inspect room 51 to make sure it suited my needs. A few minutes later, room #51 was to be my home away from home for the night. It even had its own 'secret' side exit through the ice room. The place did look old. Personally, it reminded me a bit of my grandmother's house. I guess that's why they called it the 'historic' hotel. In my historic room, there was an old radiator in the room. There was no heater dial, if it got too hot instructions said to 'open a window'. The bed was big and comfy, the TV was big. The bathroom seemed to have a second door to the other room on the other side. There was a desk and a sink in the room. There were few electrical outlets however, so I only charged the things I really had too. John Wayne stayed at this place way back when, so it was certainly good enough for me. I discovered next to the front desk, there's a big sitting area with a big fireplace and some signed movie memorabilia. Regrettably, once I discovered my private exit by the ice machines, I didn't pass through here, or spend much time admiring the historical things there. Oh well, next time I will. Lone Pine really sprang up as a place for cowboy actors and film crews to stay way back when in the 1920's. The Dow Villa is that old, and is within easy walking distance of lots of things in downtown Lone Pine. Actually, 'down town' Lone Pine is a single street. There's several restaurants, a few gift shops, and a bunch of sporting supply stores. Nowadays it seems to survive on people passing through for fishing and hunting. My destination was inside Lone Pine, and it wouldn't take me that long. So I meandered around downtown Lone Pine for a bit, and then stayed inside my room most of the evening watching crappy cable television. A warning though: During the night, the radiator gurgled a bit, and it did wake me up a couple times wondering 'what the hell is that?' Bright and early the following morning, I left the Dow Villa bright eyed and bushy tailed for my last day of adventures. read more

The place looked cool from the road so we thought we'd see what the rates were. Their motel was booked but the historic hotel had vacancies at a totally reasonable rate ($55 for double occupancy). Sure, we had to share a bathroom but we aren't bothered by "European" style hotels. (Plus, our room had its own sink.) It was clean, comfortable, and a winner in our book for a quick overnighter on a long road trip. Do not stay in room 32. Ants and other bugs, like a cockroach. So gross. Room 32 is next to the grill cafe, where one of the wIndows looks out into the cafe seating area or them looking into your room, awkward. Otherwise the room was nice. read more

I stayed at the Dow Villa Motel (the more modernized half of the building, not the Hotel, which is the historical half) for one night on a relatively unplanned trip up to Northern California. It was a beautiful hotel with lots of history, friendly staff, and extremely comfortable quarters. The motel rooms were modern, very clean, with up-to-date amenities including a large mini fridge (with freezer shelf), microwave, HD TV, super high-speed WiFi (easy to connect--just enter the password and go!), and a truly spectacular view of Mt. Whitney out the window, and a lovely view of the Cosos from the bathroom. I would stay here again next time I come through Lone Pine! read more

I stayed for one night in room 212 in the Historic Dow Hotel. It was very clean, quiet and comfortable. The free wi-fi worked well. I enjoyed the charm of the older building. I didn't have a chance to visit the pool but I saw others there having a good time. I will stay here again the next time I visit Lone Pine! read more

The Dow Villa is two motels in one. There's a historical hotel building dating from the 1920s that hosted a bunch of stars from the golden age of Hollywood westerns. There's also a 50s/60s style motor lodge. I've stayed a few times over the years and have tried both buildings. Rooms in the original hotel are small and have vintage decor. You will feel like you just stepped onto the set of a movie set in the 1930s. The time warp can be charming at first but it can also get old pretty fast. Be careful when booking that some rooms in the historic building have private baths but others do not. The motor lodge is a generic motel with exterior walkways and rooms facing the parking lot. The rooms are comfy enough but nothing special. On my last visit I was disappointed that the outdoor whirlpool, which I enjoyed greatly on previous visits, had been replaced with a shallow unit. Hard to relax when the water barely clears my waist. read more

I love this quaint hotel. We stayed in the historic hotel but we DID have a private bathroom. It was an adorable, old-fashioned room. We walked right across the street to the pizza place for dinner. The Dow Villa hotel was the perfect place to stay for our trip out to Whitney Portal (~20min). The location is right off the main road next to all the restaurants. The only hiccup we had was that we requested a late check out for 1pm since we were out hiking and when we returned around 12:15pm we noticed room service was already servicing the room. We spoke to one of the shift managers and notified them that we had requested a later check out with the morning shift front desk but I guess the information wasn't relayed. We asked if we could still use the room to shower up and change before we began to make our 4hr trip back home and they apologized and allowed us to still use the room until 1pm as we requested. We apologized for the inconvenience since they would have to re-clean the room but overall the service we received was absolutely great! We have plans to return back to Lone Pine again in the future and the Dow Villa is certainly going to be our hotel of choice and recommendation for anyone else who may ask. Also - the room we stayed in (2 queen beds) was significantly updated and looked very nice! read more

We like the charm of the old hotel. Beds are comfortable, rooms are clean. Be sure to ask for a private bath or you probably will only have a sink in your room and share the toilet and bath down the hall. The motel rooms are all in suite. The hotel was built in 1923 and the motel was built in the 1960's I think. Lots of movie stars stayed here, Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy ( William Boyd), John Wayne, Audie Murphy, Barbara Stanwick, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe to name a few. Stays pretty busy so if you know you are stopping in Lone Pine, book ahead. read more

We stayed at Dow Villa 7/22/11 and enjoyed the comfort. We stayed in the new rooms although the historic rooms looked like they had much character. The Bed was great and big screen TV made a nice rest after schlepping through the back country. I'm a big western fan and loved the lobby with John Wayne history and all the great films shot in the Alabama Hills. A must stay hotel when passing through or prepping for a Whitney Climb. read more

We got a two twin bed room for about $80 a night at the older historical part of the motel. Which is good for travellers on a budget. There is a new wing of the motel with private baths in each room, our room in the older part only has a two communal bath and restroom in each floor. It wasn't an issue since on weekday nights, there was hardly any other persons on our floor. All in all we had a pleasant stay but it would have been better if there was a fridge in our room. read more

I stayed at the Dow Villa for the first time while on my first trout fishing trip ever in my life...so I had swept the motel before checking out , or so I thought, and come to find out I left my jacket in the closet I got for Christmas so once I got back home I called the office and a very helpful lady had went to check the room for my jacket and confirmed it was still there so she sent it back to me in Orange County, California and it showed up at my door a couple days later which I am very thankful for. I had fantastic customer service and I plan to stay at the Dow Villa again on my next Trout fishing trip in the near future. My boyfriend and I spent a night here on our road trip to Las Vegas in February and enjoyed our stay very much. We were given the choice of a room in the historic hotel or an updated room in the motel with a private bathroom and thermostat. We chose the motel room and the guy at the front desk kindly gave us a complimentary upgrade to a room with a jacuzzi tub after hearing about our long drive. The room was small and cozy and there was more than enough space for our stuff. We had king size bed and flat screen tv in the room. We grabbed a pizza and some salad at the pizza place across the street and enjoyed a very relaxing soak in the tub afterwards. We had been looking forward to staying in a motel on our trip and this one is straight out of the motel golden age. I was very surprised at how nice our room was (I didn't have very high expectations) which was actually far nicer than the one we stayed in at the Luxor when we got to Vegas. If I could do it over again I would choose to stay at the Dow Villa for the main part of our vacation and forget Vegas. read more

It was a tough call between the old hotel and the "newish" motel, but we decided on having our own bathroom and stayed at the motel. The good: - nice new TV - good shower - comfy bed - great location, walk to everything in town The bad: - noisy neighbors on night #1 - crowded parking lot on night #2 - DVD player wouldn't work (why have a flat-screen paired with a $25 DVD player?) Overall, this seems to be the best option in Lone Pine. I might check out the hotel part next time, just out of curiosity. read more

I was surprised when I entered our room. We stayed in the newer motel portion so I can't evaluate the older hotel rooms. Clean and comfortable. What more can you ask of a motel in a tiny town. The front desk clerk (Aaron) was polite and helpful. The bed is comfy, the room appears to be recently remodeled, and everything appears clean. This isn't plush, but I would t expect that of a motel geared to people driving through or backpackers coming off the mountain. read more

For a motel and the price I paid, I give Dow Villa 5 stars. This is the place to stay in Lone Pine! Dow Villa is located right in the heart of Main Street in Lone Pine. Walking distance to stores, bars and restaurants. Our room was nicely appointed with a refrigerator, DVD player, beautiful flat screen TV, comfortable decor, a window and a heater in the bathroom, coffee maker, etc. They even offer a small selection of DVD's to borrow, for free, in the front lobby. Every employee was pleasant and the surroundings were well kept. read more

The desk staff was very helpful, and my room in the historic hotel is funky, but clean and well maintained. And cheap! Only downside is that the A/C isn't very strong. Probably better in the new part of the hotel. Turns out the reservation confirming thing is just for people who reserve weeks in advance and want to arrive late. Got lucky to get a last minute room, since the inclement weather was forcing people down the hill from Mt. Whitney. Roads were flooding and mud was sliding. The Dow Villa is made up of a vintage hotel component and an external motel. Ended up with the motel, which I found worked out better. From what I heard (and saw) the hotel HVAC is controlled by one thermostat for all rooms. Can get complicated if you get too hot or too cold for what the temp is set for. At least with motel rooms, units are separate. The room was very clean, with plenty of towels and a flat screen tv, small fridge and microwave. There is also an outdoor pool and jacuzzi, which was particularly nice after roughing it out on the Whitney trail. Price was reasonable and they gave AAA rates. I would stay here again, even if planning in advance! Oh and a nice view of the mountain range, depending on weather! read more

We've stay here on and off over the past 20 yrs. Nicely refreshed rooms and very located in the middle of town. Reasonable rates and we consider a good value, well almost. Here's the downside. We've experienced that during our past several stays that the pool is open to non-guests, and specifically children under 14 that are not supervised. This year anywhere from 5-8 kids took over the pool & spa for anywhere from 4-6 hours. The 3rd day 2 of there mom's were there and ordered pizza for the gang to share at the pool. Again, non-guests. These kids did not leave the pool area once to use a bathroom. Two of the kids were little girls approx 3 & 5 yrs old. The kids drop their scooters and bikes in front of the pool gate, then take off some of their street clothes and spend the rest of the day as though they are in someone's backyard pool with no regard for the paying guests that are trying to enjoy the pool and spa. One boy about 11-12 yrs old swam in his underwear. They ran back and forth jumping from the pool to the spa, then would run laps around the pool and even the parking lot. They also decided is was ok to eat in the spa. The fact that on 2 out of the 3 days that they were there they had no adults to supervise was just irresponsible and careless. We arrived the afternoon of May 27, 2021 and they already dominating the pool. Again on 5/28, even worse. I reported to the front desk and was told the owners allow this, even though posted signed clearly address non-guests, children under 14, and swimming in street clothes. There was no action from the front desk. Because the pool area has always been part of why we stay at Dow Villa, it was clear that the enjoyment was gone. These kids were just so loud and disrespectful. Other adults felt uncomfortable in a spa with little girls and boys and they left the area. We cut our stay short because of this. We informed the manager at our departure of our reason for leaving a day early. The response was similar to our other comments to the desk clerk..."I'll let the owner's know". The owner should also know that future visits to Lone Pine will include our accommodations elsewhere. As mentioned at the onset, this has always been a pleasant experience for our large group which visits annually, but the lack of discipline to manage the amenities for paying guests is unfortunate. read more

I love this motel. My husband and I are spending Thanksgiving there. People are friendly our apt room is just right for staying several days. Thanksgiving you ask, all the kids have plans this year first time ever. We stayed here a few months ago when my husband and youngest daughter climbed Mt Whitney. The Dow Villa Motel is a good place to stay in Lone Pine due to its central location in town. It's a typical little motel, with the usual amenities, and a fabulous view of Mt Whitney right out the door. Restaurants are within easy walking distance...just a block or two or three away. I selected this place for 2 reasons -- the price but also I liked it had a historic bent, as many movie stars stayed here from the early days, including John Wayne, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Next to the reception area, they have movie memorablia, most notably Wayne's. I asked the clerks if they knew which rooms the stars stayed in, and was a bit disappointed they knew that Room 20 John Wayne stayed in one of his many visits. So instead, I told my hubby, "Maybe we're sleeping in the same room as Roy & Dale." Don't expect due to the age of the hotel part that it has up to date ammenities, as the Wi-Fi barely worked and we had a shared bathroom. (Luckily, we didn't have any problems from the room sharing our bathroom). Also, it has a regular not flat screen TV but that was not important -- it was important that I was able to watch my local baseball teams on cable. The downside was that when we were in the spa, the metal stairwell's foundation was wobbly and I had to hold it so that my husband could get in without slipping and falling. Also, needed some cleaning as I noticed there was a dirty ring. But all-in-all, our room was quaint and comfortable, and we had a good night's sleep. I would go back, however, for the price and neat touches for its historic aspects. read more
