I love this place! Been coming here for a while and I am happy its still around and the place and decor looks the same. LOVE the wings, mostly what I come here for with my waffle fries on the side. Small menu and cheap too but I am ALL BOUT THE WINGS! Happy Hour is awesome you can't go wrong with half price drinks, shots and $3 beers. Also BEER PONG in the back! Cheap, typical dive bar that took my friends and I a little while to find it. We didn't realize it was hidden below the side walk...I guess that's why they call it DOWN the hatch. We went in for happy hour on a Saturday and the drinks were just ok. They were definitely watered down (and it's to be expected I guess if we're paying $1 for beers and $2 for shots). The crowd here was pretty mixed. I was a little shocked to walk in at 7 and seeing LOADS of girls already fall down drunk!! One girl couldn't walk at all and so she kept grabbing anyone standing near her for balance until she actually vomited on a guy. This woman was probably 30 and she was the sloppiest drunk....again....it had JUST turned 7:00....damn! The crowd is very typical, frat boy kinds. The girls are pretty skanky looking and most seemed like they stopped in to get hammered before hitting the clubs later. I wasn't expecting a classy joint or anything, but the girls here were honestly embarrassing! Most of the guys were not impressed and staying in their "bro" huddles and I really don't blame them. This is not a place i would normally spend a lot of time at. Usually crowded, the bathrooms are shit, and sometimes bartender service can be slow. However, there are 2 damn good reasons to go to Down The Hatch. 1 - dollar beer night on tuesday. 2 - sunday football specials So, yeah - it's shit beer on tuesday night for a buck a plastic cup, but it's kind of fun, and you can get hammered for pretty cheap. But lets get to the real reason i like this place. SMOG (sweet mother of God), i just recently found out that between 1 and 6pm sundays, it's $21 all you can drink and all you can eat wings. Yes, let me say that again: for $21, you can eat as many wings as possible, and drink as many crap beers as possible, for 5 hours. It's absolutely fantastic. And truth be told, it wasn't quite as crowded as i expected. The wings there are pretty good - Atomic Wings. I only wish it lasted an additional hour or so, perhaps to the end of the 4pm football game ? 1-7pm ? just a thought. Then again, if 5 hours isn't enough time to look like you're pregnant from wings, and just about blacked out from mass beer consumption, i'm sure you can find a shot special somewhere around town to finish the job. read more

This is a pretty fun bar. The bartenders are cool and laid back and the drinks are super DUPER inexpensive. I used to come here during my college days so it's been about 5 years since my last visit but I don't think much has changed, according to what my younger brother says about this spot (and how often he goes back). Keep in mind that this is a college bar to a T....basement bar (reminisce of high school days), beer pong tables, sloppy drunks, Journey playing every hour on the hour. If you can hack it, this is your place. A small bar, but one where if you visit a few times will be remembered if only by face by bouncers and bartenders. My fondest memory here was slamming beers with girlfriends and manhandling some of the fiercest hot wings during a major snowstorm back in 2006 only to be approached by a gentleman from Seton Hall proclaiming his love to us. Mr. Seton Hall and I got to talking around 5pm and after some friendly banter was challenged to the ultimate of power hours...one that would last a full hour after an already challenging previous four. This kind sir wagered that a girl from a "hoity toity rich kid school" could not hold her own against a guy from Seton Hall....who was I to back down from that? And after countless beers and shots of course I was going to prove that I had what it took. Around minute 43 I told gentleman friend that I needed to use the restroom, took two shots to account for my time away, but when I returned back he had left. I think he was just angry that he knew I would win as he had offered to buy all other cocktails for the rest of the evening. What can I say? First review of 2012 and I HAD to go with Down the Hatch. By far one of the best times I had in New York. The sister and I just decided to go in for some drinks and we ended up staying there for a while. This really isn't a divey type of dive bar, there's still some respectable things about it. Met up with friends for a few beers...kudos to the amazing bartenders, it was packed (Saturday night) but the guy still remembered who I was, what kind of pitcher I was getting, and which tab was mine. Cool spot especially if you're a sports fan because there's several flat screen TVs hung around the bar each on a different sport channel. I came in with a friend because he wanted to watch his "football"..(soccer) and I was hungry. This place serves Atomic Wings. We shared the double order of wings and tater tots. We were able to split the order in half, mean half spicy and half mild. One of the biggest misconceptions of this place is that its a great place to play foosball, only if you'd like to envision foosball being played underground with 10-20 crammed near you with a sticky floor on a weekend night. The place was so packed that people had difficulty getting in and out of the place. There were several TVs to keep the dark scene somewhat lit, except you really couldn't hear anything going on. The bartenders are among the friendliest I've encountered in these types of bars and their drink specials were fantastic resulting in lots of drinks being bought. I came here an amateur and left a pro. From 1-6pm on Saturday you can get all of the wings and french fries you can eat, plus three pitchers of beer for only 21 dollars. Let's combine three of my favorite things-day drinking, cheap booze, and spicy wings of joy. Everyone seems to be having fun too! Then 6pm-7pm is sad and you have to pay full price for things. Boo. Then it is 7pm!!!! Dollar Drafts! Two Dollar shots! Happy times are here again! People are still having fun! The bathroom is still gnarly, but who cares?!? You must understand there are rules though. These rules are not too be taken lightly. The bartender was extremely friendly and patient about explaining to me the rules. However, if you have ever played any sort of drinking game with me you will know that I am not too good at remembered rules, especially if I have been enjoying cheap, delicious beer. Therefore, I am unable to rely them to you verbatim but at some points you can only drink bottled beer not draft, at some points you can not order pitchers, and sometimes they need to close out your card for unknown reasons. Why the rules? I don't know! As soon as you learn them, you will be a happy camper. I recently fell back in love with daytime drinking. There's really nothing better than having a few beers midday, going to bed by midnight, and having all of Sunday hangover-free to tackle whatever projects you wanted to finish over the weekend. Last weekend, I headed over to Down the Hatch to indulge in some beers and wings. Down the Hatch, located in the West Village, has a pretty sweet deal on Saturday and Sundays - pay $21, and you'll have unlimited wings, fries and onion rings from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Need something to wash down those wings? You'll also get 3 pitchers of beer. Don't worry, you don't have to juggle several pitchers. Instead, you get tickets, and you can redeem each ticket for a beer or use four tickets and get a pitcher. You can select any of the beers on tap - I believe I was drinking Michelob Ultra for most of the afternoon (gotta cut those calories somewhere). The bar had plenty of tables and counters to eat wings off of, and unlike a night bar scene, everyone was friendly. People were sharing tables, chatting it up, pouring you some beer, etc. Granted, I was in NYU territory and may have been about 4 years older than some of the patrons, but everyone was getting along fine - to the point where I may have screamed out "Coll-ege." Now on to the beer - when I heard 1-6 p.m., I knew there was no reason for me to get there at 1, so we got there at 3. At first I was a little upset because back in the day, Saturday activities at DTH were all you can drink and now I was limited to 3 pitchers (this coming from the girl who only needs 3 beers). But, we didn't come close to redeeming all our drink tickets - not even the guys. As a heads up, at 5:30 the bartenders stop serving pitchers, but you can still get cups of beer. The bartenders are fine with you stocking up with beer at your table - I believe once it became 6 p.m., we may have had 2 pitchers left and stayed for another hour. Some bartenders didn't even collect tickets, which was great. As far as the food went, it was your typical bar food and was perfect for accompanying a pint. Wings came with fries and you could order onion rings too if you wanted. Our favorite Atomic Wings provides the wings at Down the Hatch. If you are looking to grab a few drinks during the day, check out Down the Hatch. It's a much more affordable option than sitting in any other bar in this city and ordering drinks and food. read more

Down the Hatch is much like Schaefer Beer. Schaefer's slogan in the 1950s was "the one beer to have when you're having more than one." Down the Hatch is "the bar to go to when you're having more than one." And by "one," I mean "one pitcher. On your own." It's a bar whose patrons drink like they're still in college... mainly because most of them still ARE in college. The bathrooms are gross and the crowd is douchy, but I'm not ashamed to be four years removed from college and still drinking there myself. DTH can get pretty packed on the weekends, especially around the foosball and beer pong tables, so weekdays - or happy hour - are better choice. However, beware the half-price happy hour specials! I once got so drunk before 9pm on a Friday night here that I could barely find my way home. read more

After a night out at Down the Hatch, I now know that this is the hot-spot for all the NYU freshmen from Hayden. Persnickety RAs that will write you up for drinking in the room and playing flip cup? Have no fear: Down the Hatch has beer pong tables, so you can play all of your favorite drinking games and not have to worry about the consequences. It's also a judgment free zone for the girls, you can wear those dresses from Wet Seal and Forever 21 in public. I'm all for dive bars, but not of the "bro/obnoxious frat guy" persuasion. I freaking love this place - absolute dive for absolute fun. I like going from 1-6 on Saturday or Sunday for the $20 all you can eat beer and wings. There are plenty of beers on tap - its is mostly an American mix and light beer blend, but what else would you expect from this place? The wings are AWESOME - possibly my favorite in the city - maybe even of all time. Try the atomic wings -there really not that bad - just leave you with a reasonable after burn. DTH works in cycles (Sat. & Sun.) - the first couple hours are pretty low key. Plenty of people, plenty of drinking - just more laid back. Around 3 the place gets packed. Stake out your space early, otherwise people will take it. Tables and the porch swing are prime real-estate. Things die down around 6 when the specials ends, but not for long. Seriously, you should get there early and ease your way into to it OR arrive drunk, because if at 3 or 4 you are still sober, its going to be too much. I don't know who DJs, but there is always good music - my friends and I always find our selves saying, 'I love this song.' Bring some cards and get a drinking game going or start a game of beer pong - challengers buy. The vibe in here is hip, loud, fantastic music playing. Lot's of good looking men too. When you feel like going dive, go to Down the Hatch for sure. I've been here several times, on various days of the week and I've had a blast every single time. The bartenders are FABULOUS - Melissa and Tommy (i think), you guys are the greatest. They deserve awards seriously - so upbeat, easy-going - they are what makes the place so enjoyable. You feel like your best buddies are serving up drinks. The place looks like your typical dive but they serve up awesome cheap drinks - I don't drink beer, but $1 draughts on Tuesdays - insaaane. I'm a big fan of shots - anything you can think of, they will concoct. And they ALWAYS taste good. I like to experiment with new flavors, and the "surprise me" technique has pleasantly surprised me time and time again. My favorite drink EVER - the tic tac (shot or bomb) - I think should be kept as a DTH secret. Tastes like an orange tic-tac, and I have taken many people there just to try it - and each time, we never left. I found myself at DTH more nights than I'd like to admit - due both to knowing their bartender of many years, Tommy, and also due to many of my late 20-something friends still trying to party like 19 year old frat boys. However, I've always found that the company you keep is more important than the places you go, so if you asked me how many times I've been to DTH, I'd have to say at least 100 - and that's probably a conservative number. Having said that, at the ripe old age of 29, (and even back at 26-27) I found myself FAR too old for this crowd. A lot of college kids, a lot of young tourists, a lot of older creepier guys trying to pick up said college girls and tourists. The music can range from tolerable to god-awful, and oftentimes (especially on weekend nights) it gets so crowded that you can't move. The bathrooms also leave much to be desired for, and are incredibly divey. I'm not a big mixed drink person, so I can't comment on that, but people mostly go here for cheap beer - Bud/Bud light, Coors Light, Miller Lite, Rolling Rock, etc. And they do have decent prices on pitchers. People recommend the wings, but I much prefer the 20 cent wings (which are way cheaper than DTH's pricing) at Croxley Ales on Ave. B. At the end of the day, this wouldn't be my first choice of places to go. In fact, I usually have to get dragged here by a group before agreeing. But if you're 21-25 looking for cheap beer, and nice bartenders, and don't mind music blasting so loud that you can't hear the person next to you speak, then sure, why not? read more

Felt bad for the happy hour barkeep, she had been super pleasant during our sweet sixteen basketball outing. Once she was replaced it went all down hill.
