How sad that so many YMCAs have grown away from their original mission it seems. Inquired as a traveler what their fee was here to come in and use the showers and it's $15. In my hometown of Orlando, I was a YMCA member for many many years until it just became too cost prohibitive and I did not want to have to apply for a special scholarship. Very Gorgeous place! Equipped with such eclectic equipment that is very up to date! Also there are so many machines that is makes it nearly impossible to not find one! Out of the YMCA's I have been to this one is the most well equipped... the seven racket ball courts are very nice and there is usually at least one open. The negatives about this place is that it often seems like the main floor is like a showcase floor... Its hard to explain this but as a girl you kind of feel on display in front of the free weights. My boyfriend says sitting in front of the mirror is like an ass museum cause all you can see is a lot of butts. On the plus side the top section is a little more cozy. Also there is not a lot of directions so you just get to wander and find all the cool adventures. read more

This YMCA is SO much more than I expected. They have a wide range of equipment for both lifting and cardio. The open air feel and the large windows on the main workout floor are very nice. They have an indoor pool as well as a rooftop pool. Both awesome! Two main drawbacks of this place can be the parking and crowds at peak times of 5-7pm. You should buy their parking pass and just save yourself the hassle of trying to street park. The workout floor can get crowded, but you can usually find a free machine that goes with your workout routine. Just be flexible and keep your eyes open. I've heard people say that the Downtown Y is intimidating. While there are some very fit people there, you shouldn't worry about them. You're in there to become more fit and healthy. Newly remodeled. The weight/exercise room has been moved from the basement where there were no real windows, up to the second floor with plenty of light and lots more space. There are now so many more machines that if you don't like one style of machine you can find the same exercise in a different machine that you may like. The locker rooms have been redone also to look less like a prison. The kids area is not done yet, but looks like it will be a real improvement. read more

Best place to get in the gym down town and they have their own cover parking garage that members can use for a very small monthly fee ($8). They have a full pool, racket ball courts, multiple basketball courts and a very impressive fitness room. You will never have issues finding an exercise machine or the weight rack you need. It stays busy but never seems crowded. If need be they will set you up with one of their trainers too! Definately the best place downtown if you need to exercise and it is also one of the most affordable. read more

We were in town for vacation from MN. We are members of the Y in the twin cities. Was able to access this Y. It's huge. Four floors. The Y supplies you with bath towels, not just hand towels. There is a smoothie bar on the main level. Note, the rooftop bar is only open from 3:30-6pm Mon- Fri from now through Labor Day, after which the rooftop pool will close. read more

Absolutely the best gym I've visited since I moved to Nashville, last year. The weight room caters to those looking for free weights, but there are plenty of machines as well. I have to comment on the lack of grunting that goes on in the gym. There are very few "meat heads" and it makes for a much more enjoyable workout. So don't come here if that's what your after, please. I highly recommend this place! read more

I used to be a member of Green Hills YMCA. I LOVE the downtown YMCA. It's spacious and bright & shiny with tons more to offer. I highly recommend! The only annoying thing is having to pay for parking every month, but I guess it's worth it when you're getting more machines, a card theatre and a gym you actually like going to! read more

Since I'm so sore today I can barely walk thanks to my trainer at the Y (Ashley) I thought it was finally time to write a review! Facilities are gorgeous and always clean. Staff is very friendly with a wide variety of members from all walks of life. I've tried a lot of the group fitness classes and most are pretty good. Keep trying a wide variety of instructors until you find one that works for you. My favs are Monday night yoga, Lynn's spin + abs, and Kim's Zumba. Grab a spin bike along the same wall as the instructor if you want to be entertained by the massive men preening themselves on the weight machines. Parking is an extra $8 a month when you pay by auto-debit but worth it. Final words of wisdom: don't be intimidated by the guys on all the machines. You can kick butt and pump some iron too. read more

Why the Y? Why not? Checked into the YMCA while my buddy was at work in Nashville. And I had a pleasant time. Despite some minor disappointments. You can get a day pass by checking in online. It's a quick and easy process. Get an email confirmation straight to your smart phone. Once inside, you'll be guided to their locker room. Nice flat screens playing weird History channel space alien conspiracy theories. Towels galore for the taking. The gym floor is big and has lots of different machines. Some machines I was really happy to see. Oh how I miss a good ole shrug machine. At the same time, many machines were down and out of order. Boo. After a good workout I went for a swim, at their rooftop pool. While only five feet high, you can get a nice swim in, cool off, and lay out in the sun for a bit. Nice was to relax. This Y is very good! It's not like the old, so-so Y's that I knew back in NJ. It's also not the unassuming building you might see in Downtown Nashville that says YMCA on it; it's across the street from it. This YMCA is a rather new facility that's spacious, well lit, has a lot of equipment as well as a track. I went there for several months before I moved to Florida. Really an exceptional gym with pretty much all you could ask for. In fact if it did not say YMCA on the front it would likely be the most expensive gym in the city. Huge main workout room with all the fixins, lots of rooms for classes, a cinema room that shows movies with cardio equipment, a big pool, well appointed locker rooms, kids care center, etc. As I sit here thinking about the Y there is not really anything that I would change other than small nitpicky items. Also. for people who work downtown it is a great place to get in a before/after work workout or even squeeze one in on a lunch break. Now I just need to get in that building more often. read more

The remodeled downtown Y looks like it will be fantastic. It is more than tripling in size. I would say it is probably long overdue. Parking is getting improved as well which is one of my problems with this Y right now. You can get a parking permit and park in the lot; there's also street parking on McLemore, thankfully. It is a bit odd that what you might think of as the flagship YMCA in Nashville is overshadowed by the branch locations. All that said, this Y has what you need. The locker room seems enormous. There are free weight and cardio machines downstairs. I've heard the pool is quite nice. I'm definitely curious how the renovation will make this place turn out. I've been a member of the YMCA for a little over a month now, and I am more than impressed. This location in particular has everything a woman working downtown could want/need. The employees are super nice and always helpful! I took away a star because I wasn't a fan of the two group fitness classes I took. Besides that, it's a beautiful facility with plenty of machines! P.S.- when I was a little girl I learned how to swim here. So joining as an adult, and seeing the growth over the past 20 years has made me proud to have joined this location. read more

What a wonderful gym, right downtown. I need to get in a swim and an hour on the elliptical to prep for a triathlon during a trip to Nashville. Pool was great -- 25 meters, 8 lanes, and the lifeguards and other swimmers were very helpful to my initial confusion. The cardio studio is immense, with lots of different machines even within each category (bike, stairclimber, elliptical, etc.). The locker room was also impressive -- spacious, modern and clean with plenty of showerheads, stalls and sinks. read more

This Y is really really nice. Just renovated and it's everything you could need in a workout facility. They are on a sliding fee basis for your monthly dues and when I joined they didn't even mention the starter fee. We got an even better deal with the "couples" pkg .. I was added for literally a few dollars extra! Sweet deal! I would recommend getting a parking pass .. it's cheap. The only negative I have is the Y's hours. They need to stay open late on weekends as well. Not everyone has a "9 to 5" schedule even on weekends. HOWEVER on the flip side I am VERY excited that a gym in Nashville offers such a wide range of group fitness classes around the noon hour. Most are at 6am .. maybe 10 am at the latest and then evening classes. I work a night schedule and sleep in. SO offering such great classes at 11:30, Noon, 1pm .. GREAT!! What a beautiful facility. The staff is awesome and clearly enjoy their jobs. The facility is immaculate. The basketball courts are what you'd expect at a world class university. The machines are new and even on crowded weeknights, there is plenty of equipment to get a great workout without waiting for machines. I live close by so this is the YMCA in my neighborhood. I would say if you can only work out certain times then go when you can there is plenty of equipment, awesome classes and much more. It can get crowded at times and I've found those times to peak at 5 pm up until about 8 pm with the exception of Friday. I personally avoid those times but as far as a gym they have everything and more than you can ask for and staff is nice and helpful. read more

Pretty much everything I'd want to say has already been said in previous reviews: It's spacious, solid equipment, with friendly staff and slightly annoying but perfectly manageable parking. It's all true, but that's not what got me to finally get myself a membership: It was the Zumba classes. If you haven't heard of it before, Zumba is essentially a combination of aerobics, dancing, and modern dance music. It's cardio focused with a relaxed atmosphere, so you don't have to be skilled or particularly coordinated to participate, although I admit I like to showoff when I can :) Kim teaches an excellent Monday night class, and Samantha does a Zumba-toning class for those who want to focus on muscle tone while still moving around. Jenny does a Friday night Zumba class which is especially intense. There are also plenty of other Zumba classes, but these are the only ones I have been able to attend thus far. In summary, I can't find anything wrong with the Downtown YMCA: It has all of the qualities of a solid gym, and helped me find an activity that lets me laugh even as I'm ready to keel over in exhaustion. Used the YMCA parking garage (have a parking pass) and met a friend briefly after hours and got back to the garage at 10:30 and the gate was closed and all the doors were locked. There were no signs saying when the gate would be closed or when to be out of the garage. Our car and all our possessions were locked in the garage over night-only 30 minutes after the Y closed. I visited from out of town - I had left my eyeglasses on the top shelf of the locker (after putting in contacts) and they not only found them but packaged them up and mailed them to me. I really appreciated it. The facility is very large with track, basketball, squash/racquetball courts, stretch areas, and a large workout area plus a huge locker room with big shower area. I really love the facilities here but I absolutely hate the lack of parking and also the fact that now they want to charge for it. Ugh!! I know Nashville is growing but it would be really advantageous to find a lot we could all park at without having to fight over spots or pay more than we already do per month just to go here. Well, after I read the reviews I wasn't surprised that people would acknowledge the facility as a really nice place to work out. I never feel cramped even during the busy times using the free weights or machines. I do however, have a major complaint regarding the men's locker room. I have only been a member for a couple of months but have noticed that there is an extensive amount of sexual activity among men in the men's steam room and shower areas. I won't go into the details of what I have seen but it is extremely inappropriate and unsafe health wise. This is not a discrimination issue, this is a health and safety issue. YMCA, you need to deal with this issue immediately! read more

This inside is great - plenty of machines and great classes. But first you have to get there - you know what I love to do before hitting the gym? Driving around in downtown traffic for 20 minutes between the YMCA's three parking lots, parking in an unlit lot next to the train tracks, walking through a gap in a chain link fence, across a street with no crosswalk, and across half a dozen empty parking spaces in the lot that was closed because it's "full," just to get in the building. And I get to pay $9 a month for the privilege! Luckily, the parking troubles give me a good dose of rage to use in my work outs. read more

As a recent California transplant, and long-time member of 24 Hour Fitness, I have to say how impressed I am with this Y. I've never lived in an area where Y's were established, so this is a new experience for me. The club has the feel of a private club and outside parking was a snap in the late afternoon. Perhaps my assessment will move to 5 stars after I've had a chance to experience it. I'm a big kettlebell fan, so I was happy to see their assortment. Usually only personal trainers have access to these. Since most people aren't trained in their use, they're always available. What a great find a few minutes from home. As soon as my bikes get shipped, I'll forget the car and ride down the hill to the Y in decent weather. read more

I've never been turned away from a facility that's supposed to promote health! This is my gym that I go to daily, despite living closer to the Northwest location. I like the HUGE variety of machines, 4 different tracks and two pools. The rooftop pool is so nice during the summer, but kind of wish it was adults only, since its can get pretty rowdy up there. My only complaint is a few of the class instructors. I also wish they had a barre class and more classes in the middle of the day for lunch breaks! :) read more

I love the Downtown Y. I am a citywide member so I have the option to go to many other Y's but I always choose the one downtown, even though it is a bit of a drive from my home in South Nashville. I always make sure that I attend Kim's Zumba class every week on Monday at 6:30 and Saturday Morning at 9:45. She has been whipping my body into shape. If you are looking for a great place to work out where everyone is very friendly and you don't feel out of place. This would be the place to go! Why not give the Y a try :) read more

Good group workout classes but the parking situation is a disaster. Even when you buy a monthly parking pass, there's rarely parking available at peak hours on the church street underground location and the The lot off of Charlotte has been closed for awhile. There's no direction, it's congested, and I end up usually being very late to my workout classes...if I circle around the block enough times and eventually do get a spot. read more
