Always a great time at the pup social
    Elena C.

This a review of their puppy social. We adopted out little man from the HSSV and wanted to make sure he gets socialized as soon as possible. Most puppy socials in our area were had a cut off of 4 months, which sucks because our kid had to wait for his vaccinations. Lucky for us, and our pup, we found Downtown Dogs and they let pups up to 5 months into their socials. Yay! Registration was a little confusing. I first went to their calendar that didn't show any availability, so I emailed them. They responded within a few hours (fast) explaining the process: 1) You have to fill out a request form by Tuesday to register your pup for the upcoming weekend session. 2) The owner reviews all of the submissions and send out an email on Wednesday to confirm you're in. I'm sure they do it to keep the amount of dogs per staff balanced. 3) The email also includes a link to pay for the class($15 for 45 min.) The payment must be submitted by a certain day to secure your pups spot. Unfortunately the website doesn't save your details and you can't pre-register for bulk sessions. So each week your planing on taking your puppy you must remember to log in and fill out the request. It's slightly annoying, but it's a nuisance I am willing to go through to make my boy happy. The day off the social, you arrive, tell the pups name to receptionist and they will assign you to one of two spaces. They separate dogs by weight and maybe temperament as well. Each space has its own trainer that walks you through the rules and then all pups are let loose. The trainers do a great job observing each pup to ensure it's a enjoyable experience for them, separate them if things get too rough and also engage with the pawrents answering questions and giving advice. Our little man loves playing with the other dogs and also enjoyed the climbing fixture in the middle of the room. It was amazing to see how week over week friendships were made and how some of the more shy kids started to come out of their shell. I would highly recommend this place for anyone who is trying to socialize their puppy.

This is the first daycare we started taking Stella, our English bulldog. Staff is amazing. Jackie and Kayla are always so patient with my helicopter mom tendencies. And all of Stellas teachers have great energy and I love that they grey her by name. We've been attending DD since June 2021 when my office opened up, I appreciate the camera, pictures, and communication about Stellas day. I recently started commuting to work and wanted something closer to my office. DD has spoiled us rotten. The other daycares I visited just do not compare whatsoever. DD has great teacher to dog ratios, interaction is on point, and just overall cleanliness along with communication. It's now scary to see other daycares that aren't following DD structure! Needless to say, Stella will continue daycare at DD! Thank you, DD!!

Kobe enjoying a day of play (daycare)

5 stars for a wonderful dog daycare and boarding facility. We have used their facility and services for puppy play group, dog training, and daycare. Downtown Dogs is top notch in every way and one of the very few places I'd trust with my puppy Kobe. Highlights: - Thorough temperament and health screening process for new dogs. They don't just let any dog into their pack and that gave us peace of mind against any unwanted aggression or fights that may harm our puppy. - High-quality daycare 7am-7pm with convenient drop off and pick up times. For extra, you can add obedience training, treats, grooming, and other convenient services the day which we always do. - Webcams! Always great to check in on the pup throughout the day. - Friendly staff. I've closely observed how they handle the dogs with care and consideration. - Reservation system. Great website that makes it easy to reserve a daycare spot, add on extras, and check report cards. Overall, we highly recommend Downtown Dogs as a place that genuinely cares about animals. They know Kobe by name and their warmth makes DD feel like a community rather than a business. Mark, Kelly, and the staff give a personalized and compassionate touch to the pups that makes a world of difference from other places.

Taking a break during puppy social

So happy with the puppy socials and staff! They're very attentive of puppy body language and helping nudge puppies when they push too hard during play. They explain what's going on to owners so that they too are aware of how to handle and read your own pup during play. If you've got a shy pup or first timer, they know how to accommodate. They help initiate good play behavior from other more confident puppies to the shy/first timer. In the case of a very shy pup, they give an xpen so the pup can observe and feel safe, and to leave the pen if they feel comfortable. I brought my Shiba puppy to the puppy socials as soon as he finished his required vaccines. On the first day, for the first 5 minutes he tried to climb up the wall. Afterwards, he settled down and opened up! He loves other dogs now and is super excited to play; which is a new thing I have to work on with him. But it's a good problem to have, IMO! I don't have to worry about any shyness he may have with other dogs when they walk by or from a distance. Much easier to work with his excitability than any fear of dogs.

Amazing, truly a treasure in the bay area - good value for $, responsible and caring employees, responsive, clean, reliable, etc. etc. all the good things you are looking for when you entrust someone with your fur baby. They have a report card system as well after daycare; it tells you any new friends they made, their mood that day, any commands practiced, along with a few pictures - it's just the best. Webcam also available whenever you want some respite from work and want to check-in on your baby. My pup, T'Challa, is only 4 months old and has already gone 3 times in the past week. He's already made so many fur-iends. They have an interview process to ensure they only accept socialized, happy dogs in their pack. Highly recommend.

Tired from puppy social plays and zoomies!

Our puppy Maggie has been attending Downtown Dogs' puppy socials and daycare for the past few months. After the recent passing of our senior dog, we've had separation anxiety from her when she's not by our side! However, I always feel at ease dropping her off because we know that she's well taken care of during her time at daycare. Maggie loves to be held and snuggled and I could see that the staff often picks her up and spoils her. It makes us laugh and warms our hearts to see that they care for her as much as we do. Maggie loves the staff and follows them around, and plays so much with her friends. All of the staff have been great and helpful. I've already recommended Downtown Dogs to others who are returning to work and have to be away from their fur babies!

My puppy is 3 months old and has only two rounds of shots for now. Is he eligible for puppy socialization events?

I do want to mention that the staff was friendly on each of my accounts. I went in hopeful--the tour was a nice gesture, and I appreciated that they offer cameras for monitoring. Unfortunately, the week I brought my dog in, the cameras were down due to Wi-Fi issues, which I understand can happen. However, my concerns started after the first day. When I picked Maui up, he urgently needed to go poo. After we got home (about a 45-minute drive), he drank almost an entire bowl of water. This made me question whether he was being given enough water or regular opportunities to relieve himself during the day. The same thing happened the second day. When I picked him up, he immediately drank water from a bowl they had outside immediately and had an extremely long pee--lasting over a minute--which again made me feel like he wasn't being let out frequently enough. On top of that, I noticed a very unpleasant smell coming from him in the car. When I checked, there were stains on his chin and belly that smelled far worse than urine. This raised concerns about cleanliness, either in the kennels or play areas (which were not included in the tour). I truly wanted this to be a good, budget-friendly option, but based on my experience, I would rather pay more elsewhere to ensure my dog is properly cared for. Saving money isn't worth compromising my pet's well-being.

The first year with my golden retriever, Luka, was extremely hard. He was a mouthy dog who had zero boundaries at home or outside. He would get excited or frustrated and grab/bite onto my shoes or clothes daily. Walking him became an impossible task because he was extremely dog-reactive, and he dragged me a couple of times while trying to chase another dog. Walking him also became a two-person job, with someone always on the lookout for other dogs so we could turn the other way. He also began to resource guard and snapped at my dad twice.. I had already spent thousands on another trainer and didn't have much success. I began to feel like this was just what life with Luka would be like forever. It got to the point where I felt scared of him, and the life I was giving him out of that fear wasn't fair to him. So I decided to try and get help one last time. I found Lori's page and after reading the reviews I became hopeful again. I took Luka in for an evaluation, and Lori recommended their board-and-train program. I can't thank Chelsea and Lori enough for everything they've done. I've learned so much about Luka, how to manage different situations, and how to better understand his behavior. We had training lessons throughout his board-and-train stay and afterward, because we are the ones who need most of the training! Chelsea did an amazing job with Luka. At home, Luka is unrecognizable in the best way. We can actually go on adventures outside without being terrified that we won't be able to handle him. Those who knew Luka before his stay and see him now always comment on how well he is doing. I cannot recommend Lori Hamilton's Dog training enough to anyone who feels like they've tried everything and is feeling discouraged. I am so thankful because it finally feels like Luka and I can start living life and enjoying everything around us.

She trained us and trained him and ultimately transformed life at home. Our 3 cats are now able to be in the same room as him. Our visitors no longer have him standing up on their chest in exuberant greeting. We can relax and have dinner without Ruben trying to eat our feet or running zoomies around the room. We can walk him without having our arms ripped out of our sockets. He is calm around other dogs. He is crate trained and easily goes to sleep at night. He has his own treadmill and works out twice a day, in addition to our daily walks. We been to Pack walks with Lori and 15 other dogs, all walking obediently through the Pruneyard shopping center. The dogs get to work on socialization and good manners on these field trips. Lori came to our house and we staged a meal with a visitor. It really helped us learn how to keep him on his best behavior during meal time with a guest!!! Our first year with Ruben was really tough, he was not the mellow golden retriever we anticipated. Lori's teaching changed everything. She provided the methods and the tools to help us have the best outcome and a relaxed home life with our beautiful dog; more than we ever expected!!!

Regarding my pup contracting Giardia--I already stated in my original review that I understand parasites are common and my puppy was probably more susceptible, so I wasn't placing blame on the facility. Just a warning that these things happen. However I would like to point out that my dog did not go anywhere else besides home and their facility (since theyre insinuating that it could've been contracted elsewhere). Additionally, the fact that Furrtropolis requires a negative fecal test every 6 months is a warning in itself that any dog could be carrying a parasite between that time, so this requirement isn't full proof. This is just the nature of daycares and boarding facilities, and it wasn't the sole reason I decided we wouldn't be returning. 2. Regarding kennel cough--again just spreading the warning of what my dog experienced coming back from the facility. I'm fully aware they don't have control over the health of every dog that enters. 3. Records show that we were in contact, because as I stated in my review, I would have to continously badger the staff in order to get any updates. Yes, responses were prompt but that wasn't the issue. It was getting updates to begin with, without me having to reach out on the 4th day of boarding to ask how things went. I've seen other boarding places have cameras or provide daily updates (on meals, training sessions, nap time, etc)--totally fine if this isn't one of those places and you're a dog parent that doesn't mind. It's just not for me. *I also want to clarify that I directly expressed to the staff multiple times of wanting more communication/updates and it not being met before I came to yelp* 4. This just further proves my point on the poor communication from this facility, the fact that I wasn't made aware my pup might have had a decrease in appetite or activity level is serious alarm bells. Both of those things would indicate to me that something is off since my dog normally has endless energy and a black hole for a stomach. At the very least, a simple update that my dog just finished his additional 1:1 training session/1:1 play session that I paid extra for would've been nice. My dog is the love of my life and I'm sure other pet parents feel the same. It's important for me to share my experiences to provide insight for others and so the business can improve for others.
