Moved here recently from Manhattan, where I regularly patronized small natural foods store like this. Considering the size of the store's footprint and the economics of small stores and natural foods, I find this store's selection and pricing remarkably comparable to what I'm used to. Are the aisles crowded? Of course... ditto the stores I patronized in Manhattan.Do they stock everything I could possibly want? No. But what they do stock FAR exceeds what I can fit in my fridge and kitchen cabinets. I've seen some reviewers say checkout staff is rude... What the heck. This place is one of the only places out here that offers healthy food options locally . Gluten free, dairy free, and yummy snacks. Sometimes I try something that sucks, but it's also a brand I've never tried before and you won't know until you try. Most of the items I found here I love and keep coming back for. Unfortunately most other markets in this area do not offer an assortment like this one. Prices are a bit higher here, but you're paying for convenience. The workers are kind and understanding. I've never had an issue with any of the workers. Sometimes an item maybe spoiled or going bad, but if you call right away after you notice they usually make exchanges effortless for you. I hate how much I depend on this store. As a vegan, this is the only store that I can find most of my items. Veganism barely exists in Jackson Heights. This market overcharges for EVERYTHING!!!! I only buy things when they're "on sale". The manager always subtly follows my partner and I around the store even though we come in every single Sunday. Even the cashiers know who we are! I don't know what his reasoning is but I'm never long in there enough to care. While I appreciate that they try to get in new products all the time they also take away commonly purchased items which makes no sense. Also, they mix all the Vegan products with regular products. While the aisles are still difficult to navigate Natural Market has improved its stock considerably. First of all, they now sell Balthazar breads! My favorite sourdough rye is here (the signature Balthazar bread) and a great ciabatta too. It's really nice to have an option besides the ubiquitous Bread Alone. They've also upgraded their sliced cheese selection with better brands like Finlandia and their frozen section has lots of new goodies including healthy children's options like spinach bites and veggie sticks. Their smoked salmon selection is better now too. read more

Even though I know it's overpriced, I come here all the time because it is at the end of my block. And then, a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that 10 of the 12 eggs I bought were stuck in the carton. I did not find out until I had already cracked one of the ones that wasn't. Then, I bought a bag of apples that turned out all bruised. Ok, that happens, but now I just opened some organic tofu and found it 3/4 of the way frozen. They freeze the tofu and then put it out. Gross. Last but absolutely not least, they had a strange turnover of all of their cashiers recently which is never a good sign in terms of what their business practices may be. I need to reorganize my shopping. This place is not worth giving your money to. read more

I remember when this place was not opened yet (back in 2016? I cannot recall, someone please fill in) and feeling happy that a nice new natural market was going to be just down the street from where we live. (Feels like yesterday!) It has strong plusses and minuses as you can read from all of the other reviews so here goes mine - Note: In case anyone would find this useful, my husband and I go to a combo of stores in and out of the neighborhood (Downtown Market, FruitaDona (now called something "natural"), Mango Rico, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, and sometimes the Jackson Heights Farmers' Market) on a weekly or bi-weekly to get all that we need. Plusses: * Organic and specialized natural food items you cannot find in any other store in the neighborhood (even Whole Foods in Manhattan such as organic tumeric - Yes, this is true, check that out yourself!) * The convenience of having what you need when it's sold out online or when you unexpectedly ran out of / forgot something while shopping elsewhere * Their snack section - I'm always going there to see what they have in stock and if they introduced any new items. Downtown Market has brands and items that you may not find at Whole Foods such as Vegan Rob's puffs. * Their egg section - If you're looking for cageless and free-range, they have good prices from several farms. Before COVID19 hit, they used to sell 2 dozen for $6 and under for 2 brands but then it changed. Still, worth buying from as there is a risk buying & hauling something delicate like this all the way over from a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods from Manhattan. * Their ice cream section - They have a big variety for a store of this size, I'm especially happy with this now that the weather screams for ice cream! * Their bin section - They have a good variety of beans, lentils, nuts and dry goods you can scoop by the lb. This was added to the store for a few years now where they used to have a smoothie and prepared food to go section. (Part of me wishes that they could bring back a smoothie section where you can buy organic smoothies to save time making them myself when very busy in the week.) * They do special orders, just ask! My friend special-ordered some hard-to-get probiotic item that requires refrigeration. Minuses: * Some items are overpriced. (This is to be expected since you can't win with everything in a store of this size and rent going up a lot in the neighborhood. At least there are some items that are either the same price as other stores such as boxed triple-washed organic spinach and mixed salad lettuces.) * Some items are expired and still sold. (This happened with a bag of pita bread I bought once. Just take care to check before you buy and if you do accidentally buy what's molded over, bring the item and the original receipt. I got refunded for it.) *The cramped space of their supplements and medicinal herb section. *The manager (My friend said he gives her an attitude and I never saw him smile or appear friendly. The cashiers are very shy but are always nice to me, never had a problem with them.) read more

Haters gonna hate. You have to know what you're getting when you step into this place: you're paying for highly specialized items and intense cleanliness. Good luck finding a properly ripened banana at Foodtown. If you bring them home, you're going to have green bananas that quickly turn black. Downtown Natural Market not only has those good bananas, but it has some that are not wrapped in plastic! I love Lemon Farm and even more so Growing Farm, but I also love Downtown Natural Market. Also good luck getting in and out of Foodtown in less than a half hour. The checkout lines are a disaster. There are some days when you aren't ready for the event that Foodtown can be. Minus one star because when I did go there one time before I was hip to their vibe, I bought some laundry detergent that was massively overpriced. Also because their yogurt selection is irregular. Sometimes there is Noosa, sometimes not, sometimes there are blended Chobanis, sometimes not. But they do carry chia pudding and fun stuff like that. My opinion is that you go to this place to specialty shop, or in a pinch, to avoid the lines and the ridiculous disaster that Foodtown often is. It's not a place to get all of your various staples, it's a place to get special items. I greatly appreciate the natural soaps and the lack of packaging on some of their items. read more

Yes, there is more organic products to select from versus the C Town Supermarket up the block. Found prices to be relatively expensive. Swiss Museli Cereal from Switzerland is like $7.39 or $7.69 or $7.99-cannot recall. This is way too expensive. Other places charge less than this. Just because it's labeled Organic does not mean prices need to be jacked up. It's highway robbery and this is Queens and not Manhattan. Pros- Store is well lite up. Aisles are clean. Prices are stamped on every box. Labels all over the place. Lots of products to select from. Best bargains are products listed on sale listed on the circular. ***Cons- Caution!!! Double check prices!!!*** There were a couple boxes of sweet potatoes and they looked great but they did not have any price listed. Asked one of the employees in the produce area for pricing and he said it was $1.99 a pound. When I went to the register it rang up $2.99 a pound, asked the girls at the counter to confirm pricing with the guy which they went to check. Now, imagine if I bought 10 pounds of Sweet Potatoes I would have been charged an extra $10 bucks. Also, love Yogi tea- There were papers taped up that said 2/$7.00 all over the area. I took 2 boxes and they were not on sale and rung up $3.99 instead. Is this selective marketing? Why certain Yogi Tea on sale and others not? Surprised by this. I decided not to buy the two boxes cause at another store it was selling for $2.99 but for sake of being at this store I was going to buy some more stuff. Not here. It was my first time shopping here and the last. Too many other stores to shop at. read more

As one reviewer mentioned, this store can come in handy for specific, last minute purchases - like Cashew milk yogurt, Kombucha or non-dairy gluten-free, vegan mac n' cheese. It's an extensive selection of food not offered anywhere else in the neighborhood. Looking over many of these past reviews - isn't organic food of this nature typically on the pricey side anyways? While there aren't many Whole Foods-ish type options in the area, you can still get decent produce at Lemon Farm or Food Town down the street, if this ain't your cup o'tea or you don't want to over-spend. However, I don't mind coming here for those special brands and/or products I can't find at mainstream stores. For example, plant-based cleaning products found on Jet, Amazon or at Whole Foods. Sorry if I come off sounding like a gentrified idiot. At any rate, the place does seem over-stocked and disorganized at times - especially the crowded Vitamin/Supplement section. You literally cannot fit into the narrow aisles without knocking over something on display. In addition, some produce items are, while varied, inconsistent. I've been here multiple times when arugula, spinach or lettuce were left rotting and soggy on the shelves. The meat section is less desirable - with mostly minimally processed meats, chicken sausage and leaky packets of D'Artagnan chicken. Customer service could use improvement. The staff is a bit cold. Asking for help at one point, the manager brushed me off and rudely told one of her employees to assist and, very coyly, showed me the wrong item. The cashiers are mostly shy and greet you with half smiles and mumbles, except for one guy who was engaging and funny. read more

I've been here a few times since they opened. I'm a fan. Health food stores are inherently more $$ than major grocery chains. That's why so many people eat unhealthy foods; it's the easiest way to stretch what little money they have to spend. It doesn't help that this location has had a sign up since opening day, saying they don't accept food stamps. When I do go, I get the specialty cereals or puffed snacks, almond milk or silk creamer for my coffee. I always check the fresh produce selection at any market I visit. This one looks vibrant and fresh. I balance shopping over many stores so I get the best deals and variety possible, but having this so close, does help. read more

This store is good for an emergency situation where you need something immediately because the prices are on the expensive side. Last product I purchased was raw organic cacao powder that costs twice than the one from other stores. They have a lot of product options to choose from so they got three stars for this. read more

The store is extremely disorganized there are boxes all over the floor product everywhere and the people that work there do not help you. Unfortunately this is the only store in the area where you can buy decent organic products but it is very overpriced and I will not be returning there. It is sad because it has the potential to be a great store if the management knew what they were doing and the employees had to training to make the isles safe organized and clean as a grocery store should be. read more

I gave this place many chances now. My experience yesterday made it concrete to never return here. After many times of coming home unsatisfied by the produce purchased here. I continued to return because they do have a good variety of organic products. But I would rather eat rotten GMO than return to this place that does NOT cater to their customers. I used to come here every day if not every other day. Yesterday as I approached the cashier to pay for my items. My card was declined, the cashier called her manager over (who I believe is the wife of the owner) and IMMEDIATELY with a terrible disgusting look on her face she says "SHE DOESNT HAVE MONEY" all while i am trying to call the bank to figure out what happened with my card. I had just come from the pharmacy where I used all my cash on me to buy my two year old son medicine since he was terribly sick. SO here I am, embarrassed that this lady just told everyone I didnt have money and then continued to look like this was too much of a hazzle for her. I am at fault for not being able to pay like i THOUGHT I was going to be able to. But all I needed was a bit of patience to figure out what happened. So another man sees the struggle and he offered to pay for the things, he left the money there and left. Now she comes to me with even a BIGGER attitude and says well what do you wanna do. And im just in shock of how low this woman just made me feel in front of everyone there. Her and her husband (the boss) think that because people of a higher social class go there to buy their groceries, that incidents like this never happen. Then at last I proceeded to tell her that she did not have to treat me this way, she refused to respond to me and acted as if I didnt exist. Once I spoke to the bank they informed me there was a unknown charge on my account of $600 to which left my account so low at the moment the cashier processed my card. They resolved it within minutes, but I still left wishing this never happened because I had never felt so embarrassed and mistreated at a store that i have spent THOUSANDS of dollars on. If it would have been anyone else at a weaker state of mind, a situation like this could lead someone to really harming themselves out of embarrassment. I hope she is reading this and knows that for all the money she has right at this moment in life, one day that could all disappear. Goodbye downtown natural market, I will return to foodtown from now on and pitch to them to bring in more organic products. Dropped in here because I saw they carried a lot of vegan products. It will be the last time!!! Products are very, very expensive - sometimes double what I could get from down the street. It also has a very unpleasant environment. Customer service is terrible and the manager was so rude when I asked a simple question. The girls at the check out seem bored and make no effort to smile or be pleasant. Do yourself a favor and save your money. I love that we have this store in our neighbourhood - especially for organic and specialty items, it's amazing. I don't usually get produce here because it's mad expensive and seems to go bad really quickly (is this a sign of a good thing or bad, someone please tell me). However, weirdly, they are super cheap for organic, cage-free eggs - you can get a dozen for $2.50! If you can go often, and without a general plan, you can get the things they have on sale/discount which can be quite a savings. I also get all my frozen fruit (organic blueberries, etc), plant proteins (fake meat, black bean burgers), and dark chocolate here. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and I like that they stock items with an eye to environmental concerns. read more

Spelt noodles! Lotus root soba! Farro! Edamame noodles! Jinela tea (agua de Jamaica). Ready-to-go vegan sandwiches, wraps, salads, and noodles. Granola bars. Teaccino. Fresh produce. Beverages that are not easy to find elsewhere. Vitamins. Homeopathic remedies. Even body lotions and deodorants all organic and natural. Anything that you can get at a regular supermarket but gluten-free and also vegetarian would most likely be bought here. I enjoyed shopping here! They accept credit. I like it here. Sad to see the poor reviews lambasting about prices. News flash: food that isn't laden with preservatives and chemicals and other nasty things have to be more expensive because they usually have a relatively quick date of expiration. It's also more expensive to make foods with whole ingredients and not cheap fillers that you'll find in General Mills, kraft and other big name players in the commercial food industry. Yes it's more expensive than Whole Foods but Whole Foods (and this might surprise you) is a corporation that can afford and has the financial might to buy and sell their goods at prices that they- not the producer- deem appropriate. Support independent businesses. Or don't, but just trying to address something here. I'll get off my soapbox now. Anyways I can't eat dairy, and you'd be surprised at how it'll pop up in the strangest of places. This market has a staggering selection of products to try, from ice cream, snacks, and milk/ cheese substitutes. They also have a great selection of flours from other sources than wheat for those who can't (or won't) eat gluten. I work out a lot, and so it's very important to me that I fuel my body properly. Most proteins are made from whey or casein, but this place has protein powders made from spirulina, pea, hemp and soy. There's also a sizeable supplement section. I buy my produce elsewhere, but the avocados are always ready to eat. Give it a shot! read more

Wow, welcome to Park Slope! This natural and organic market is huge. They have just about everything. Prices are alright, I have no idea what normal organic prices are but I know you don't get organic for cheap. The things on sale have handwritten signs, though, so they are easy to spot - though Debra's review gives me some concern. The only thing I think could definitely improve is more locally sourced things - and labeled as such. Getting syrup from here feels empty if I don't know it's from New York or Vermont. Somehow I feel like this spot doesn't get enough credit.. I'm not able to eat anything with wheat or dairy mainly, and finding foods/snacks that don't have those allergens can be tough out here. Of all the markets not many carry organic items. Not just organic but items you wouldn't see anywhere else. I will say that it could use a few more budget friendly additions. Also the fruit and vegetable isle gets a little pricey. I wouldn't buy my veggies here, but I will say their cucumbers don't disappoint.. I come here once or twice a week. There are some really random things here, which for the most part is a good thing. It's like they're still trying to figure out what products work since the neighborhood is evolving. For example, fat-free cheese (which I regrettably bought because I was consumed with a momentary insatiable stroke of curiosity -- it's not good). Some things are more overpriced (in comparison with other nearby supermarket prices), but some are actually less than what you'd find at a Whole Foods in Manhattan. The staff, except for one guy, has always been very friendly and helpful. Store is kept clean, nice selection of products, great bulk section. The thing you have to look out for, and this has been an issue even when they were in the old location, the sale prices noted on shelf cards are often not what it you will be charged. The way I see it, this happens too often to be an oversight or accident. Less often, but something to keep an eye on, the sticker price on the item will be less than it scans for. Of course it's more expensive than the local super markets, but their sales items are very reasonably priced. They also have a huge section of gluten free cookies and some other hard-to-find-in-Jackson-Heights items like duck bacon and other organic cured meats. And for what it's worth, while I was checking out I happened to overhear two cashiers talking. One of them was telling the newer cashier that the owners or managers pay for a car service when she stays late--and that they'd definitely do this for the newer employee since she's a young mom. When I noted that it's cool that they get a cab for them, the lady corrected me, "Not a cab. This is a nice addition to the neighborhood. Yes, it's expensive if you're going to do all your shopping there. BUT for a lot of organic and specialty foods there is no other place in the neighborhood. Things I've found at Downtown Natural Market that I haven't found anywhere in Jackson Heights: pine nuts, miso paste, various types of seaweed, hot sauce with no preservatives, grain-free cat food, RX bars...-and the prices really are fine, considering the convenience. read more

This is an attractive store, well laid out, with wide aisles. They have a decent selection of natural products on the shelf, dairy and produce. I wish they had followed the model of Vitality Health and Natural Market in Astoria where you can get all kinds of fresh prepared foods as well as all the products this Jackson Heights store is carrying. I believe they accomplish this in approximately the same amount of space. I will definitely come to this market, but it lacks a certain je ne sais quoi that would have kept me coming back more frequently. read more

Ok i was in a pinch traveling to the airport to pi k up a family member and i knew that the stores would be closed by the time i got her home, so i found this store close to where i was and what a find! It has a huge supermarket amount of inventory and a great selection of essentials all packed into this neighborhood grocery-style store. Not one inch is wasted! The people who work there are super nice in their way, and as helpful as they can be just like all of us. The veggies all looked fresh and there is a huge selection as well as as cheeses and a personal care section and frozen too. Not all items are organic but most are. I'm not sure if the workers eat organic or not but it felt good to find this store and find what i needed so quickly off the highway and main road. There is metered P parking in front and side street parking too. If you are looking for something ask bit then keep looking as they may not know they have it since there is a lot hanging on things and in between aisles. It feels good to know that the things inside the perimeter of fresh (veggies meat cheese and milks) there are aisles of organic products too, in a small neighborhood store. The place is still growing, there are still parts where they havent installed shelves or any lighting. Its still under construction but overall it does have a variety of organic products. The prices are ok and as mentioned before they hand write their special offers. I would like to come back when they are completely done with the place but if i need a quick grocery shopping ill go here. The jackson heights place across the street its too expensive. read more

These stars are only given to the 2 people in the nuts and beans section. The man and Indian woman. The manager Gallo treats his employees and customers disgusting. He is an Ecuadorian man who should not be in charge. Having a little sense of power doesn't mean you treat others badly. He stepped on my toes and told me to move. He needed to talk to those people 2 people about something. I had to wait more than 10 minutes and finally get my dried mangoes even though I had asked for my dried mangoes before he came. This place is wonderful! Life in the neighborhood is so much better since they opened. I rarely need to shop at the other grocery stores in Jackson Heights anymore. Combined with the Sunday greenmarket and the veggie shops on 37th, I've got all the groceries and related things I need. The variety they stock is excellent given the size of the store. I'm often pleasantly surprised when there are things on my shopping list that I'm not sure they carry. They are overpriced even for non organic products. Their customer service had improved but they aren't even halfway to considered so so good. For fruits and vegetables I prefer to wait until Sunday morning and shop at the farmers market also in the neighborhood. The manager in this store is cold, unfriendly, with zero customer service skills, never greet his customers and he is very arrogant. For some reason, the cashiers now started looking at you now when you check out and saying a very shy "have a nice day". Most of the staff aren't friendly and have no idea of what community means. I had never ever seem a customer there having a conversation with staff. Because they are the only "organic" store in the neighborhood they believe business is doing good however if the owner could think big they could be much better. read more

For all those inclined to extol virtues of a "mom-and-pop" operation, I challenge you to do the same for this store. While I'm an infrequent shopper here, I always leave chastising myself for having patronized it yet again. There are several reasons why this is NOT a friendly neighborhood store-- 1) As pointed out by some already, it is expensive, perhaps banking on its monopoly as the only "organic/natural food" offering in JH. As an example, I just paid almost $5 for a bunch of broccoli (3 heads). Silly silly me; 2) Pricing for items in the produce department are never consistently marked, which can lead to a less than pleasant surprise at the check-out; and, 3) the general miserable and unfriendly attitude of staff, including stock clerks/cashiers. Never once have I heard "thank you" from anyone working there. I'm almost okay with getting ripped off if there's a whiff of appreciation for my dollars spent. Never again. read more
