This farmers market is located at a large church and after seeing the variety of vendors it definitely was such a fun way to start the weekend. We arrived around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning and had no trouble finding parking, which was a great start. I loved the variety of products featured here! There were everything from groceries and fresh bread to eggs, jams, pickled foods, soaps, and more. I'd guess there were maybe 100-150 vendors total, with most of them set up outside. There was also a section inside the church with a few vendors selling ice cream, produce, and other perishables, and that area was air conditioned, which was very welcome since it was around 110 degrees outside. They also had restrooms available, which was convenient. I believe vendor hours are from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., but because of the summer heat, my friend and I only stayed from about 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. Overall, I loved the variety of Arizona-based products and services and thought it was a really enjoyable market to visit.

You just have to keep your eyes open…read more I stumbled on this wonderful little patch of heaven while I was on the "Arcadia 9th Edible Garden Tour." It was one of the scheduled stops on the garden map. I had no idea what a treat we were in for as we pulled up to what appeared to be an ordinary one-story quiet neighborhood house. Getting out of the car we realized that this was no ordinary front yard. Yes, it had a small wooden rail fence around it. But behind that fence there was no traditional landscaping, no hedges, no grass, no manicured flower beds. There were rows of beans and corn and tomatoes and peppers! As we walked through the carport to the back, we entered a delightful sun room filled with baskets of fresh produce - all freshly picked and, of course, for sale. (Yep, I bought a few small fresh green items to supplement my salad already in the refrigerator at home.) The back yard was more of a delight than the front. Raised beds. Veggies and flowers. And, yes, there was some grass . . . . but most of all it was a miniature oasis of a farm from my childhood. There were chickens and goats, who all seemed somewhat nonchalant about city dwellers stumbling through their little bit of heaven. My Farmyard is a delightful example of what you can do to "grow locally. produce organically. [&] eat well." One of the services they will help you with is planning your own raised bed garden in your yard. They will help you create a "Planting Plan." Oh, I didn't tell you the best part. If you don't want to convert your yard to a veggie garden, you can sign up for weekly Urban Farm Produce Baskets. Freshly picked seasonal veggies and fruits delivered once a week. They even have half shares that are perfect for 1 person. And extra large shares for families or vegetarians. No more been in the store too long and came from who knows where. These veggies and fruits are grown in your own back yard - or in My Farmyard's front yard! Call and go visit your local urban organic farmer. He/she lives on a wonderful little patch of heaven right here in our city!

I, on the other hand, was told it would be a $2k minimum just to plant the vegetables (that's with me creating the beds and doing the irrigation on my own)...and that it could be as much as up to $5k. The reason for the price discrepancy? "My location". I'm certain that's not the true reason as I don't live that far away (Chandler) It was either A) not profitable enough for them with the small job I required or B) related to my last name. Regardless, I recommend others take their business elsewhere.

If you are not familiar with a CSA and how it work, here's a down and dirty explanation. You pay a certain amount of money in advance for several months of veggies each week. In this case, Maya's farm charges about $300 for 12 weeks of a whole heck of a lot of veggies that are certified organic. You support your local farmers and you know where your food is coming from. I recommend that you swing by the farm and take a stroll around. You might see Maya. I've met her and I think she's a very nice person. I will update this review with more info but I think the pictures that I post of Maya's Farm CSA speak for themselves. My only wishlist with Maya's farm is to have a half-basket. My small family and I can't finish all the veggies in one week.

The produce section keeps going farther than you think, the shelves are stocked with all the staples I recognize, and then you hit the meat department... and wow. Seafood, pork, lamb, goat, beef bones, organ meats--you name it, they probably have it. If you're looking for something that makes the average grocery store employee say, "We don't carry that," this is probably where you'll find it. I grabbed pho spices, fish sauce (and was genuinely excited to find a vegan fish sauce option!), two pounds of beef bones, and an onion for about $15. Honestly? I expected to spend more. I also stumbled across a Jamaican section, which completely caught me off guard in the best way. I was there with tunnel vision, otherwise I probably would've wandered around for another half hour convincing myself I suddenly needed ingredients for three different cuisines. The checkout was quick, the cashier was friendly, and while the parking lot was surprisingly quiet, don't let that fool you. This isn't one of those giant, chaotic destination markets, feels more like the neighborhood spot where people already know they can find what they need. It is nicely organized which made my quick stop in very easy. I'll definitely be back. Next time I'm giving myself permission to actually browse instead of speed-running my shopping list. This most recent time I went , there were moldy taro roots on display, and I had to go back to return the sunflower seeds I bought, because they went bad and bugs were crawling inside the shells. One of these efforts is this community and urban incubator farm which was established by Cultivate South Phoenix (CUSP) to give residents of South Phoenix affordable access to healthy food while encouraging them to appreciate active living and healthy roots of their cultures. At the Saturday farmer's market you can get very locally grown produce and craft items while taking in the cultural performances of local talents. The site of Spaces of Opportunity includes a 10-acre incubator farm where quarter-acre to one-acre plots of land are made available with a preference to farmers who are part of the South Phoenix community and who have limited resources. Also, community members can rent a plot to plant, grow and harvest produce for their own use or to share with others - and the rental fee is an super-affordable $5 a month! I love that here I was able to get fresh locally grown produce as well as craft items to be given as presents and in so doing I celebrate the culture and encourage the efforts of South Phoenix gardeners, farmers and farm workers.

Last night my whole opinion of horseradish drastically changed...in a very positive way! During Phoestivus at the Phoenix Public Market, I browsed the rows of local food vendors and stumbled across Grate Roots. Intrigued, I started to ask more about horseradish. At first, I tried a sample out of courtesy and then my mind was blown. When did horseradish get a tangy taste with a serious kick to it? Why did I just want to take a spoon and eat the whole thing by itself? I was blown away. This local company makes several flavors including their seasonal flavor Cranberry, a fruity flavor, the basic flavor and then beet. Yes beet. They had me sample the beet flavor and again, I did it just out of courtesy and then to my disbelief, I fell in love! I immediately thought of a turkey or tuna fish sandwich topped with this spicy goodness, so I had to make a purchase. I left with Beet horseradish and I plan on making myself a tuna fish sandwich topped with this yummy local flavor to add a kick to my day. I learned that they sell their products at local Farmer's Markets as well as AJ's. Now I know where to replhish my stash.
