I shared approved Dept of Buildings plans and supervisor came out for a walk-through and verbally quoted me $20,000, saying as he left he'd write the detailed proposal based on his $20,000 verbal quote. However, when he emailed his proposal the price shot up 92.3% to $38,460.00! I emailed back to get justification, but never received a response to the exorbitant markup from the verbalized quote at my house. I wanted to know why Harris would not honor the $20,00 I was quoted during the site visit? I have been a repeat client of this business paying $1000s at each of their visits to do my plumbing work, and was told that because of this fact, I'd get a slight discount on my renovation proposal for the plumbing aspect. But a 92.3% markup from original quote of $20,000 is extortion, fraud and just bad business practice to say the very least! I found out also that they don't come out and tell you that they charge a discharge/service fee to come out, but $150/per hour of travel time is quietly--not disclosed to customer--added to their bills, yet never disclosed to you upfront. They were coming from the office location in Brownsville and I'm all the way down south on Avenue Z in Sheepshead Bay and they must take the side streets to get to me because commercial vehicles are not permitted on the Belt Parkway. I will stop being a repeat loyal customer to Harris Plumbing and Heating and will not refer them to anyone else ever again. I'll be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau also. He comes to my apt, looks at the flushometer toilet and says "your super should be able to do this." The problem is, my super sucks. I know this, which is why I am calling a pro. The piston in the flushometer completely gives way a week later, water is just running full blast into the bowl, and I had no choice but to call the super. He puts a new shutoff valve on the toilet, for some reason, and replaces the piston. I pay him $260. Problem is, he effed it up. The action on the flusher was weirdly stiff, and a few weeks later it just stops working. I call the super and he couldn't give less of a sh*t. "I told you, you probably need a new handle" he says. "Get the part for me and I'll look at it." (He had not communicated that to me, and it turns out he was wrong anyway.) So, I end up calling one of those overpriced "retail" plumbers. He shows up, and observes that the super put an unnecessary second gasket in there, which seems to have messed it all up. About 15 minutes later the job is done, and I'm out another $300. So I ended up dealing with three different people and spending $560 for an easy job that required a $40 part. Richard is a great guy for jobs that he wants. But he really left me in the lurch here when I needed someone to just do the job right.

I was beginning to get worried when something about Richard's post caught my eye. I can't even tell you what it was to this day; it wasn't flashy or bombastic - maybe that's what it was, who knows. But something made me call him - and so far he has turned out to be the best tradesman I have had going into that building on a regular basis. He investigates the problem, gets in touch with me to review the details, we settle on a cost - always reasonable - and a course of action, and he gets the job done, letting me know the final bill. Work's done, tenants are happy and all is right with the world. He is a man of his word. And did I mention that I have yet to meet him face to face? That's right - we've been working together now for almost a year, and he and I have been nothing more than voices on the phone to each other with a little bit of cellphone technology mixed in. Sure, I have a guy in the building who works as a go-between for the residents and for followups. But Richard and I have been operating on a virtual handshake for almost a year now, and more than once he has shown himself to be not only a very good plumber, but a man with integrity and a compassionate heart. I am very fortunate to have come across his post in Craigslist. I know exactly What led me to him! At first it looked like coffee grounds and now it's all black. Our building was insisting we pay to get it fixed because it's a problem in our apartment. I explained the issue to Jerry at CID and that we never put coffee grounds or anything like that down the drain, who was able to tell me over the phone that he was completely certain the issue was not coming from our apartment since we have fully stopped using the sink and dishwasher since this started and it continues to fill with more liquid. There's more I could explain but that's the basics. Anyway Jerry was so nice, offered to get someone there by 8pm (I had called at 4pm so that was amazing) and it would be a flat fee to snake the drain and was very up front about what it would be which was very transparent. He suggested I talk to building management as this was not an issue of something we did wrong that normally it's something they would pay for. I did and they are sending someone out to inspect all the apartments in our line tomorrow. I don't think they will let us use CID if they are going to pay for it (which we sincerely hope they will) but despite that Jerry was incredibly nice and even gave me specific tips to tell the building management to make sure their plumber did the best job possible. Thank you Jerry for probably saving us a lot of money! Please go give these guys business, if we could we would!

Parkset priced a fix, a pressure reducer, at $950. The manufacturer told me my pressure was fine and it sounded like air in pipes, a common occurrence after installation. Parkset's worker did a lazy job: emptied the heater and turned on a few faucets. When that did not work, he said I needed a mixer valve replacement on the worst faucet. Then Parkset ghosted my repeated requests for an actual bleeding of the system, or even a price for a mixer valve.
