Unfortunately, the reality was very different. First, prospective visitors should be aware of the immediate surroundings. During my visit, I observed people lingering around the property and what appeared to be drug transactions nearby. I understand that a business can't control everything about its neighborhood, but it directly affected my comfort. I felt uneasy leaving my car parked there, even just for the couple of hours I was there. Once upstairs, the sauna itself was extremely small. I'm not a large person, and I still found it claustrophobic. More concerning were the visible gaps between the wooden boards. I could literally see daylight through the walls. For an outdoor dry sauna in Oregon, that didn't inspire confidence in the construction or upkeep. The shower setup added to the frustration. The hot-water rinse had a chain within reach, but the cold-water control was placed so high that I couldn't reach it at all. There was no call button or clear way to reach an attendant from the rooftop either. So if I had a question, needed assistance, or wanted someone to fix the cold-water pull, I would have had to leave the rooftop and go all the way back down to the lobby. I also couldn't find something as basic as a trash can. The changing and bathroom setup was another surprise. Sauna guests use shared bathroom/changing facilities with guests of the property. I understand that The Society Hotel offers hostel-style accommodations, but as someone who specifically booked the outdoor sauna experience, it wasn't what I expected based on the polished way the experience is marketed. Then there's the rooftop aspect. I expected that being on the rooftop would mean there would be some kind of view or outlook. Instead, privacy fencing blocks the sightline. You can't really look out--you can basically only look up. That was another disappointment compared with the impression I got from the marketing. Finally, the towel-return process stood out in a bad way. I was given a towel at check-in, which I used in the sauna and after showering. There was no bin or designated place that I could find for used towels, so I ended up handing my damp, used towel directly to the front-desk employee, who took it with their bare hands. That made me uncomfortable and seemed like a poor system for handling used linens. It also left me wondering how many guests' used towels employees are handling directly throughout the day. Any one of these things on its own might have been something I could overlook. Taken together--the neighborhood experience, extremely cramped sauna, visible gaps in the sauna walls, inaccessible cold-water control, lack of a way to contact staff, no trash can, shared facilities, blocked rooftop view, and handling of used towels--the entire experience felt haphazard and makeshift rather than relaxing. The concept has potential, and their marketing team does an excellent job presenting it. Unfortunately, the actual experience did not live up to that presentation. I left extremely disappointed and would not return for the outdoor dry sauna.

I asked if I could help him and he excitedly responded, "Oh! Em, I'm just confirming that this room is occupied." I assured him it was and he scurried off down the hallway talking to someone on his radio. This was before the literal garbage fire. The hotel sits on the edge of less than savory part of town. In fact, our room overlooked a park that is frequented by unhoused people. This, in and of itself, wasn't a problem -- this part of town has several drop in clinics that become gathering points for unhoused people. It became a problem when, at 11 pm, I opened the curtains for one last look at the city, only to be treated by a trashcan in the park outside our window spewing smoke. Just as I picked up the phone to call Guest Services, the thing erupted into flames. There are trees in this park whose trunks are firmly planted in the turf across the street, but whose limbs brush against the hotel, so I wanted to be sure this was resolved before going to bed. When I told guest services about the fire, I was challenge with, "well, is it on hotel property?" I explained it wasn't, but it was just outside of our window, and the front desk staff advised me to call the non emergency line for the fire department. Now, we're from out of town -- thus our needing a hotel to sleep in for the night -- and deferring to the out-of-towners to report a fire close to the hotel seems a bit less than responsible; we don't know street names, or of this is a common enough occurrence with which to bother the fire department. I told the the fire department that I had called the front desk, and that they handed the task of calling off to me, and the dispatcher's response was a sarcastic, "oh, that's convenient for them. Well it looks like someone -- not your hotel -- called the fire in, so the firefighters are already en route." Was this an anomalous chain of very strange events? Maybe. But it's all left us feeling a more than a little uneasy.

Being a historic hotel, rooms are usually a little smaller. I thought the beds were comfortable, as was the bedding. We also had breakfast at the hotel's cafe/restaurant there in the lobby. Food was good, and the staff were attentive. Only downside was the valet parking. We had to go around the block a couple of times cause the front of the hotel was being blocked by other traffic and couldn't squeeze our way in. I also felt bad for the valet staff as the parking was somewhere offsite. Overall, a great stay, would recommend staying here. I've always stayed with a friend who lives outside of town. My stay here was enjoyable. Most notably, the bed was super comfortable and soft. I slept so well. The blackout curtains was a nice touch. The weather didn't permit for early morning activities so I always slept in. I took one star for a couple of reasons. First being that I tried to check in about an hour before the 4pm checkin time thinking it would be accommodated, but alas that was not the case. I checked in my luggage and walked across the bridge and got a much needed caffeinated beverage. I got back under an hour and was finally able to get in my room. The room was clean, but not even 5 mins into me unpacking, housekeeping was at my front door asking if I had found anything in the drawer. There was in fact the previous guest's clothing in 2 of the drawers. So yeah, that was off putting. The second thing is that there was in fact no tea in my room. It would've been nice to have it at night when it was colder. Pros: I appreciated that the bathroom had all the products needed which was perfect since I forgot to bring shampoo. Also not a fan of the daily charge for the amenities. Personally, I think only the guests who use the fitness facilities should be charged said fees. It feels like highway robbery to be charged $29 daily when you don't use the gym. What if I was here a full week? That's bonkers. I got to use the gym the day I checked out. This area was dramatically quieter than the other side of the bridge. That's where the riff raffery was. It always felt so relaxing as soon as I entered the front door. As soon as I got to my room, it was silence. The Providence Park tram stop is just 2 mins away on foot. This means you can take the red line to the airport ins of taking an uber. I made sure to have breakfast at Gracie's and a nightcap at Driftwood, both on the opposite side of reception.

The greeting was subpar (which was one of my favorite moments of each stay) and then what I experienced in my room was well below the standard I would expect: cracked window, scudge coming down the bathroom drain, stained carpet, a slip cover on the couch because the couch was in such bad shape, etc. I ran into the manager in the elevator and shared what I was experiencing and invited him to see the room. Instead of moving me to a different room, he offered an upgrade for my next visit. Why would I come back. In addition, he shared that the front desk person isn't great at hospitality and she is leaving. This is his hotel... and he threw her under the bus. There were many more moments: Going to get my car only to find the garage door locked. Someone should have let me know to call in advance to have access to my car - I was carrying all my bags and had to walk back to the hotel. And my experience with the bar service and food was subpar. We did have to change rooms in the middle (our reservation, not the hotel's fault) and they made it seamless. - Extra special shout out to Richie in the valet service. All of the valet guys were incredible, quick and kind. - The food in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner was delicious and relatively affordable for the quality. - Wine hour (free wine from 5-6pm) was a nice touch to get our evenings going in the right direction. The wine wasn't the best but I can't complain about free wine and appetizers. - Our only criticism was the lack of water stations on the hotel floors. Not sure if we couldn't find them - they did have ice machines - but we did have to go back to the lobby and into the fitness room to fill our bottles. Not a bad thing, just a little inconvenient. No one can sleep through that. Gladly when we came down to the lobby they stated that it was a false alarm. Soon after about an hour or so we got a text message saying that it was a false alarm. I did enjoy the breakfast here at the lobby! That was actually pretty delicious and I would say to try it out. The beds and comfortable and you can also bring your dog into this hotel which is kind of cool! That was a bonus seeing all the different-sized dogs roaming around.

Having a live music band a few feet from the check in desk also was not helping. The room is clean and everything works as expected. The breakfast was included with our package, and this was one of the highlight. It was not regular buffet breakfast, it is actually restaurant-grade foods at the lobby, I think it's called the Melrose? The downside is wait time is horrendous. My work around for this is order them to go first thing in the morning. They have a barista there too that makes great lattes. Location is very convenient, walkable to all the restaurants on my list, there is a communal food trucks area just a block from the hotel. The other downside is there was so many hobos in the area... but that is not in the hotel's control.

It was generally quiet in the room, though you could hear the light rail go by. Wasn't a huge fan of the fact that the mini fridge was full of things that if I touched it would charged my room. If you wanted to bring leftovers from nearby restaurant, you can't because there's no space in the fridge to put things. Overall it was a good place to stay while in Portland.

So when you come in, pass the valet riveters to the left, and take the elevator up. The check-in process was fast, but the elevators took longer than they did. To access the elevators to the room floors, you need a key unless you're going down to the 1st floor or lobby. There's a restaurant on the 15th floor that had a line at the elevator because they wanted to access it without a key, and I think that's what kept the elevator area busy. The rooms are pretty big and spacious, with your usual amenities and mini-bar items. The couch was a good size. However, the TV does not move, so if you are on the couch and watching TV, the angle is sideways. The in-room dining menu is limited, with little selection, and even the restaurant/bar behind the lobby has a limited food menu. The bed was comfortable, but the pillows were very flat when you lay on them. The housekeeping staff was very friendly and nice
