The sushi was fresh, well seasoned, and the miso soup and salad were delicious and refreshing! My friend said her sweet potato roll was surprisingly crispy. Salmon was nice and fatty. I ordered for pick up and it was ready in about 25 mins. Don't know when I'll ever be in this area but absolutely would return. Hit the spot! read more

Miso soup was just as wonderful, if not, even better. The umami-filled miso flavor was allowed to shine through without the broth being overly salt. Our soup paved the way for a beautifully presented salmon tartare. The salmon was ocean cool, fresh, and evenly portioned (you don't get a mouthful, but you're not asking for more with each bite either). As you pull the salmon apart, you reveal the layers of seaweed and avocado, equally fresh and complementary to the salmon. The sauce and roe added a dash of saltiness, but was not overwhelming. I consider myself somewhat of a sashimi and sushi aficionado. During lunch today with my best friend, I came across some of the freshest, spectacular sushi I have enjoyed in a long time. The Dozo Asian Bistro and Sushi restaurant located at 1450 Whalley Avenue in New Haven was wonderful and well worth the trip. We had edamame, seaweed salad, a rainbow roll and my all time favorite Unagi. The sushi was delicious and served at the right temperature. The presentation was delightful. While the portions were small, the price was reasonable and the service was good. The atmosphere is pleasant. Some of the pieces from the Orient were quite impressive. The ambience has great potential if they added better lighting and considered rearranging the decor. I will definitely keep Dozo in mind in the future for great Asian food. read more

I was going to leave a 3 star because the fish was actually decent quality but everything else brought it down so much. We were 1 of 3 tables and still waited a lifetime for our food. The ice machine desperately needs to be cleaned, we couldn't drink our water because we saw particles melting off the ice and the glasses were cloudy with dirt, grime, I don't even know. This is overall very good food and the shrimp tempura summer roll was excellent. The summer roll was wrapped in rice paper and was light, flavorful and one of the best rolls we have had. The rock shrimp appetizer was above average and the chicken wings we both thought lacked flavor and was average at best. The last item we had was a fried rice with roast pork, Shrimp and Chicken and it was so flavorful and an excellent fried rice. Better than many sushi places closer to the Yale campus. I had a good time here. The staff was super nice and kind. The inside is pleasing. The sushi itself was pretty good. High-quality sushi spot and definitely a spot I hope to visit again in the future. Overall, I was impressed with their menu, and the decor was tasteful though perhaps a little dated. I was surprised that the spot wasn't too full on a weekend evening. Quality of service was standard. Their list of fancy rolls was pretty long, making it hard to pick an option. Ultimately, we got 3: Black spider, volcano, and rainbow mix sushi rolls. The Rainbow Mix and Volcano had a little too much of the mayo (orange?) sauce, which muted the other flavors in the roll. They were good, but they were almost indistinguishable with the sauce over it. I'd probably steer away from those types of rolls in the future. Or be a little more discerning. Can't believe that I've never reviewed Dozo. It is a reliably good sushi restaurant. We've been eating here since it opened (and previously at Akasaka). Sushi quality, taste, and price is very good. Their waitstaff have always been excellent over the years. Even in recent years with much more telephone ordering, they've done an amazing job. For newcomers, I'll admit that I always dread their parking lot. Too many people whipping in/out of the Chinese restaurant next door. As much as I'd love Delivery from Dozo, the lot can't handle any more traffic. My Dozo wishlist includes more sushi bar specials and keeping them published and up to date on their website. We ordered the Tempura Summer Roll, Gyoza, a Peanut Avocado Roll, a Cucumber Roll, a Sweet Potato Roll, Chicken Katsu and Dozo Fried Rice. Everything was amazing. Sushi is always my go-to and it was truly so delicious and among the best sushi I have had in CT (and I have had alot of sushi!!) The authentic Sushi is hard to come by in the New Haven County, even in the State of Connecticut. Dozo Restaurant is for me, Tokyo born, delightful Oasis for the authentic Sushi in the region. The main Sushi chef's knowledges of the cuisin is excellent, and he prepares clean, fresh and delightful Sushi dishes. One of my favorites is Chirashi, small slices of Sashimi on a bed of Sushi rice. The chef prepare this as authentic as in the restaurants in Japan, and it is also appetizing to eyes. The kitchen items are equally authentic and delicious. Many appetizers are reasonably priced and well cooked. Adding to the menu are some of the Pan Asian dishes, like Pad Thai and Rendang Beef. The service is efficient, with the chef and the owner are pleasant and well versed in English, this restaurant has many devoted clienteles, myself now included. Oh, very convenient parking and ease of in and out from the lot helps very much to pick up take out orders. read more

I came home from my life in NYC this weekend to find out that my favorite hometown restaurant Akasaka was under new management and now known as Dozo. I had been going to Akasaka for almost two decades and had a lot of memories and favorite dishes there. Long story short, Dozo is even better than the Akasaka. They are still serving both menus right now, but are transitioning to their Dozo menu only soon. The food and sushi were fantastic. The gyoza, pan fried, were terrific and flavorful. The sushi was all super fresh and we loved the duck spring rolls. The interior is still basically the same, which I've always liked, and the prices are really great. I was sad to see Akasaka go, but now that I've tried Dozo, I'm more than excited by its replacement. read more

Dozo may seem unassuming from the outside, but it is a must-visit for any sushi lover. Great food, amazing service, and all at unbelievably reasonable prices -- a rare combination. My go-to benchmark when trying a new sushi joint is getting an assortment of sashimi. Good fish is the foundation of all sushi, whether it is prepared at your local grocery store or by a Jiro Ono acolyte. Dozo hits the mark. The tuna is smooth and flavorful, the salmon buttery, the mackerel hits the right level of brine. Your tastebuds confirm you have arrived in sushi heaven. What about the rice? Occasionally a restaurant will ruin otherwise decent fish with disappointing rice. That's not the case here. The rice was springy and incorporated into rolls and sushi at just the right proportion. Rice should be a platform for the fish, not a filler to skimp out on quality ingredients. Dozo clearly gets it. Last not but least, the service was a pleasure. You are greeted and ushered to your table with a smile. The staff offer your a hot hand towel seemingly out of nowhere -- I'm not complaining, it just happened so fast! They care about service and it clearly shows. If I lived nearby, I would be tempted to eat here every day. Apparently, there's even a text distribution list to announce the arrival of fresh Otoro (fatty tuna belly). As an out-of-towner I know this has become a destination anytime I'm close. Over all I enjoyed my lunch and time here, they have a very sweet staff and wonderful presentation of the sushi. For those who are looking for something other than sushi, they do have things like udon, tonkatsu, and other dishes to choose from. They also offer lunch specials (even on Saturday's) for pretty fair prices (comes with both miso soup and a small salad). Our waitress was extremely kind, informative and pleasant.The restaurant is dimly lit with ample seating the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a meal with your loved one.
