I just moved here and I only spent 20 minutes searching for a nearby blonde specialist, and should have looked closer to the details. I stumbled upon Raul through yelp and found good reviews for color correction and return clients. Perfect. So I call and schedule an appointment. My appointments were months ago and I'm finally ready to write this review. I don't even know where to start. My appointment time was scheduled at 2 and he arrived 20 minutes late because he was waiting for an uber. That's fine I understand not everyone has a vehicle and people depend on public transportation or ride share services. While waiting in the lobby of the salon my gut was telling me something was up so I was asking the front desk receptionist about him and his quality of work. All great things were said so I was feeling reassured. He arrives and is super apologetic for being late. I let him know I understand no worries. That wasn't a big deal for me. We get back to the chair and the station that he rents out. It's located in the back and there is very awful lighting, no authentic window/day light; that threw me off. At his station, I was expecting him to have everything all there. But I realized when he walked in he was carrying 3 large bags. All of his supplies were in his bags. It took him a minute to get all set up and pull everything out from his bags. Before the appointment we talked about my current color and what I wanted, I sent him pictures of both my current color and my inspiration pictures, platinum blonde or at least get me as blonde as we can without killing my hair. When he asked what we're doing today we made a plan that I'd like to have a shadow root with a full highlight so when my blonde grows out I won't have harsh lines from new growth, he said yes. With the bleach - he did great - he was checking me every 10-20 mins while I was processing making sure my hair wasn't stretchy and breaking. I loved that. After rinsing out the bleach and washing my hair, he began brushing out my hair. It was soo tangled and he barely used any product to detangle it. Right away he started brushing and pulling out my hair in clumps. I understand that blonde causes breakage and I was expecting some but I mean CLUMPS my head was sore after he was done brushing it. I even helped with brushing in attempt to do it softly and prevent breakage. After drying he realized that certain parts didn't take the blonde to the level we wanted so he wanted me to come back for another around of bleach cause at this time it was almost 8pm. He told me to soak my hair in coconut oil to rehydrate it overnight. So do exactly that and I come back the next day. He's already there and prepped for the appointment which I loved. I appreciated that he was ready and willing to fix the color with another round of bleach to get it where we wanted it. This time the color was right and everything looked fine. Now I'm asking about a shadow root, he stated that he didn't have the supplies to do that and that it looks good like it is. Okay so now that we did all this blonde like a full all over highlight I'm gong to be stuck with harsh roots and some of the highlights are reminding me of Cristina Aguilera back in the early 2000's. Not really my goal. But it is what it is. And I'll live for it for a while just to let my hair recover from this. I got home and did more research about him. I looked at his lower starred reviews and found what I was looking for- the same inconsistencies that I experienced. I found his website. All photos were super old and looked like his website hasn't been updated in a LONG time. Red flag for me I guess. I'm writing this review because he lacked communication, wasn't prepared and seemed like he was all over the place. The 10 hours I spent with him, I never felt relaxed like I expected to feel with previous stylists I have had. I don't know. Honestly he did fine with the blonde and got me to the color I wanted but overall with the salon being outdated/dark, his lack of communication/preparedness and poor bed side manner is why I will not go back to see him unfortunately. As a natural brunette with vey dark hair, I have wanted to be blond most of my life. Whenever I approached a hair professional with that request, though, one of two things happened: Either I went home with brassy or "fried" hair, or I went home with a mild highlight job that barely changed the color of my hair. (In the latter case, I was told that I would need 3-4 visits to truly achieve a blond shade.) So anyway, this time around I did some research and found Raul in an online search. He told me he could give me what I wanted -- just that it would take all day and be a bit pricey. True to his word, he blocked out his entire day for me, and then spent 8 hours painstakingly doing foil highlights small enough to result in a gorgeous, natural-looking blond. There is no brassiness or matte look to Raul's work. Because of his foil process throughout my hair, there are different shades of blond, plus a bit of my original brown to add a realistic touch. And best of all, my hair is still healthy and soft! His knowledge of the bleaching process allows him to keep the hair from becoming stripped. Hi I feel like too often we write reviews when we have a terrible experience, well that's not the case this time. I have been blonde my whole life and have added dark peekaboos etc over the years as trends change. Most recently, I had extensions and wanted to have an ombré look, with a darker root, melting into bright platinum blonde. My root ended up being far too dark and there was a brassy band that went around my head. So my first experience with him was a 5 star! He totally fixed my hair and it was pretty. But my second experience was not ok. I wasn't going to even bother writing a review about it but I am tired of my hair being fried! So 1st, he starts your hair from the bottom right of your head no works his way around. I told him multiple times that the foils in that section are ready, that they have been on for a long time. He didn't listen so now I have a whole foil piece that fell off . Pictures are attached. 2nd I told him my top layers were already dry and to void putting bleach on them, only the roots. Now my whole top layer of my head is fried. Pictures attached. 3rd, he didn't leave the bleach on long enough so that you can't see my growth, for the money you spend you should walk out within noticing your hair growth from the previous time. So I told him about these issues , so he has me come in to retouch up my roots . He only did where I part my hair. So when I where it half up , or I braid it you can see the growth. I can't even brush through the top part of my hair until I blow dry it , it feels stringy. Which is wasn't before this. Yes it was dry but it was never fried.So after that I just gave up . I seen him twice and he didn't fix the issue. Yes he is a cool guy and I did enjoy my first experience, but now my hair is just not the same . I went to him a few months ago. He did my highlights a couple times. I have been getting highlights for years and my hair was in great shape before. After going to him my hair broke off really bad and was very stripy. He uses extremely cheap products and doesn't care about the health of your hair. He was always making excuses and was always late.
