When choosing who we were going to hire to build a wooden deck in our backyard, we chose Yair as he seemed like the most thorough and detail oriented of the batch that came out for estimates. In particular, he was the only person to point out the uneven nature of the concrete pad where we planned to place a hot tub and recommended getting it leveled before building the deck. Overall, we are happy with his work. Our bamboo deck looks great and it's holding up well a year later. His crew was reliable, respectful and diligent and the was job done in a timely fashion. Our only complaint is that after his crew framed the deck, he pointed out that the leveled concrete pad and hot tub were not placed perpendicular to our house's back wall. As a result, our hot tub is not in alignment with the deck or house. Overall, we would recommend him for deck work but we leaned a valuable lesson. Make sure you double check dimensions and measurements during all stages of building a deck, especially if you're building it around a hot tub. read more

When we had this house built, we ordered a European Roll-Shutter, to cover the large window wall and French Doors to the Deck, off the master bedroom, and to provide bedroom privacy. The redwood railing was so massive it might as well have been a solid wall. The Roll-Shutter was rarely raised. That railing was quite UGLY! The view non-existent. My original eMail to Yair was thus: "House was built in early 1986, the existing Decks from redwood planks and cedar railings. The wood is termite-infested, and now quite dangerous." Want the decks replaced with some sort of composite material, which prevents termites and requires little care, with minimalist cable railings, to exploit the views from the Dining Room. I prefer a golden oak / maple color, to match the wood inside the house. Unlike many people, this project doesn't have a start date / completion date associated, because I want this done RIGHT, rather than immediately." End-quote. So within just a day or so, Yair called and we scheduled the first meeting. I told him I had studied Architecture for a year, but dropped out, learning just enough to get our Dream Home designed/built by the local Architect & Contractor. And I knew exactly what I wanted: decks to match the wood inside the house, with see-thru Cable Railings. Yair just smiled. He handed me a two-foot sample of the decking he uses. Unsuspecting, the sample almost dropped out of my hands because it was SO dense and heavy! He explained he prefers to use Ipe or Bamboo for decking because they are sustainable and much more durable. But, they also eventually turn a gray-color with exposure from the sun. He kindly and simply explained this in such a manner I realized my foolishness wanting a maple-colored wood. I finally realized: Which is more important - the Decking color matching the woodwork inside the house, or that Bamboo requires little protection from the elements, it won't rot in the sun, doesn't have to be oiled twice a year, and the termites won't eat it. Hello-ooo! Nobody is looking at the decking anyway - they are being swept away by the Views below and beyond ! Yair's crew (Milton and Mahari, among others) without wasting any energy, knew what they were doing, and demo-ed the termite-infested decks, and they started installing the THREE replacement Decks. I took progress photos several times a day. It was interesting to watch how the Decks were Perfectly fit together. They use special plastic spacers in the horizontal grooves in the Bamboo to keep all the planks exactly parallel. With small screws bolting the spacers to the support joists, and locking the bamboo planks together, there is no visible hardware on the top of the deck planks - just smooth fine-grain bamboo. The tops of all the support members underneath were ALL capped with grown-up plastic tape material to prevent water from seeping into the cut edges over time. The bolts & screws are all pretty much invisible. No nail or screw heads visible. Only along the perimeter edges, if you search hard, can you find the tiny (maybe 1/8" tiny!) 21st-Century bolt heads. The plastic spacers do all the work. Another fascinating construction material was giant metal screws - like four-foot long woodscrews. Yair's crew installed these screws into the caliche instead of using concrete to pour foundations. How ingenious! Even though I had failed to do my homework on the wood aspect, I HAD researched the railing part quite extensively (for a lay person). Because of the views below, I wanted minimal stainless Cable Railings, with side-mount Posts. With Deck-mount Posts, several sq feet of area are lost, and it looks HomeDepot These black railings were powder-coated a steel-color, to match the stainless Cables. Turned out the steel-color actually resulted in a cooler metal under the California Sun. Thus, with stainless cables and steel-colored Posts & Railings, the railings have mostly disappeared, in favor of the views below and the San Gabriel Foothills beyond Each day, Yair came by, all the way to the boondocks of Glendora, to observe the work. It all went exceptionally smoothly. Every day, it was a pleasure to see how much was accomplished - how the Decks were coming together as I had envisioned. To be perfectly honest, I chose to bypass getting other quotes for this project. The Reviews on yelp convinced me Yair and his crew would get the Decks built exactly perfect. Casually conversing Yair, APART from Decking, he is a very interesting person. Yair knows Decks better than anyone else in the USA - but you can make that observation yourself. Now they are all finished, I dragged a Zero-Gravity chaise longue up to the Deck off the Bedroom. For hours, the dog and I enjoy the coming Evening together, watching the neighborhood below. I'll be recommending Yair and his team to any of my contacts who have decking needs. There's a number of reasons for this. The most important aspect - the finished product itself - was as expected based on the quality work shown in Dr Deck's Yelp photos. The photos show good work, and it is indeed good work. We went with 4' IPE wood + clips for a 12x19' detached elevated deck. We also added a stainless steel cable railing, and a built-in IPE bench. I made the joke that in the event of an earthquake I'd run out of my house and onto the deck. I was only half-joking, as this thing is just that sturdy. The team started on time every day, were courteous, they didn't mind me poking around out of curiosity, and they problem solved some medium-sized surprises without losing velocity. Pricing was also reasonable, which was around the bottom 30% percentile of the 5 bids I received for the job. What stood out to me during the bidding process was: Yair's attention to detail; accommodation for budget-friendly approaches; and his dismissal of site-access concerns that other contractors wanted to make into an ordeal.
