Naturally, about 15 years later, I needed another correction and returned to Dr. Whitten for a consultation. During that visit, he recommended monovision, given my age at the time (late 40s). He explained that this approach would allow me to balance both near- and far-sighted vision without needing reading glasses, which many people begin using in their 50s. However, after the procedure I immediately noticed difficulty seeing clearly. Over the following year, I continued to struggle with my vision--particularly problematic in my work as a professional photographer--and sought evaluations from multiple optometrists and ophthalmologists. I then discovered that the LASIK procedure had been performed on the wrong eye. When I returned to see Dr. Whitten, I learned that neither he nor his staff had ever determined my dominant eye prior to surgery. In fact, my old patient notes from 2020 confirm that no such test was performed. Despite this, no apology was offered for the mistake. During that visit, I was seen by John Rogers, a technician and former Senior Surgical Consultant at TLC Vision. His background includes attending Computer Tech of Pittsburgh, but he has no formal education or degree in optometry or ophthalmology. He suggested inappropriate options such as cataract surgery (for which I am not a candidate) and during the same visit Dr. Whitten suggested undergoing yet another LASIK procedure (a third) to correct the issue or resorting to contact lenses--the very reason I had LASIK in the first place. This experience left me with the strong impression that the practice prioritizes business and profit over genuine patient care and vision correction. I regret not doing more thorough research before returning for a second procedure, as I have since learned of multiple malpractice lawsuits filed against Dr. Whitten, including Jamie Domeier vs. Mark Whitten, David Cantalupo vs. Mark Whitten, and Liesl Nichols vs. Mark Whitten. I also couldn't help but notice the promotional posters displayed across his offices, highlighting his LASIK surgery on Tiger Woods in 1999 as a marketing tool to brand himself as a "celebrity" doctor. Unfortunately, beyond the image, his apparent lack of attention and care for patients has led to a troubling number of lawsuits.

At that time, my mom handled most of the paperwork/scheduling etc. The surgery went well, and 10 years later I started experienced some vision changes. I recalled that there was a "Lifetime Guarantee," so recently I followed up and requested a consultation for an enhancement. My mother recently passed away, and I haven't been able to find any paperwork for my procedure (which was 15 years ago). I called the office, and they were able to find my file. They asked me how long I'd been going to the eye doctor, and I said about 5 years (since I had a baby and my vision declined). I arrived at the consultation, and it went well. Friendly office staff, etc. I was excited to find out that I was eligible for an enhancement in both eyes. As I was about to leave the appointment, they sat me down with someone to "review paperwork," which is when she informed me that since I hadn't had a full vision evaluation annually since my surgery, I wasn't eligible for the "Lifetime Guarantee" and that I would be charged $3,000 for the enhancement. I asked why it was expected to go to vision appointments annually when you have perfect vision, and she said "company policy." I understand that they are legally in the right, and I'm sure I was informed of this as a teenager; however, I feel taken advantage of. It felt like an ethically ambiguous money-grabbing situation. The surgery went well and I'm sure Dr. Whitten is very skilled; however, the follow-up experience was poor. Be cautious.

Because its owner, Donna, is a master in her field, an experienced and accomplished optician, trained in the complexities of grinding and properly fitting lenses into eyeglass frames so that you can see well. As someone who has had poor vision since childhood, my eyeglasses have never been simple to produce, a source of great frustration until I met Donna years ago. I have stayed with her ever since because she is a perfectionist--she always gets everything right the first time around, a rare characteristic among nearly every other optician whom I have ever used. What's more, Donna has a keen sense of cosmetics and would never, for instance, if you have vision like mine, fit you in large eyeglass frames; instead, she would find smaller ones and make sure that you look very attractive in your lightweight eyeglasses. When Donna opened her shop in La Plata, Md. and relocated out of the immediate DC metro area, it was a long drive for me. So she assisted by sending my eyeglasses by USPS, thereby reducing my number of visits; and when I fell seriously ill, she met me half-way to her shop so that I wouldn't have such a long ride. She has always been amenable and eager to help in any way possible. Which brings me to my final observation about Donna: She is a very kind and compassionate individual, someone who cares about her customers and wants them to experience joy and happiness--and for sure they will, especially with her striking and precisely crafted eyeglasses.

Dr. Cohen is clearly very passionate about what he does. So I've gotten 1 million texts and emails reminding me of the appointment. Which is fine whatever. Then I get a call this morning from a La Plata high DEF location asking me if I can change the appointment to earlier in the day and I told her no because I made the appointment later so we could make it work with our schedule. So then she says OK well you'll need to be here by 5:40 so you can fill out all the paperwork. So I said fine we'll be there by then and we hung up the phone. Then about three hours later the same girl calls back and says she's from the Waldorf high DEF location which is where our appointment was scheduled, and she says that now you'll have to be here at 5 o'clock so we can make sure everything is correct. And I said we can't do that and then I said you know what I'll just go ahead and cancel the appointment. So I never even got in the door of this place and I can already tell the way that they do business is absolutely horrible.

We called to reschedule and was told there are no remaining appointments available this year. They have a new Receptionist by the name of Erica who can be rude and if challenged because she is not very skilled, can become extremely rude. My Husband became frustrated with her and asked her to have Dr. Burn's to call him and no call was received. My Husband thought maybe Erica had not given Dr. Burn's the message because Dr. Burn's in the past has returned phone calls. So, thinking Dr. Burn's was not given the message, my Husband called again the next day. Erica was very rude and abrupt and put him on hold only to return five minutes later to say that the Doctor was not in the Office today. There is no longer an Office Manager so we both called several times and Erica did not answer the phone. We called and left a message to speak to Barry. Well, Barry called and was really uninterested in our problem, he finally listened and told my Husband that they are under staffed, the Doctor is not in and the phone rings off the hook and "that is just the way it is" and there are no appointments. We have been going to them far to long to be treated this way and have, unfortunately, decided to take our business elsewhere. We spend at least $700 plus each on reading glasses a year, every year. This place was expensive but we were loyal. You have been warned.
