I used to get my glasses from larger shops since they tend to offer more variety. However, Lenscrafters doesn't accept my new eye care insurance, so I decided to give this privately owned optometry a chance. I was very pleased with the results. True, the selection was smaller, but that just made my choice easier. Sales assistance was perfect; they added just enough suggestions to convey interest and knowledge, and did not try to sell me on the most expensive pair of glasses. More importantly, unlike Lenscrafters, I was not subjected to a hard sell for prescription sun glasses. The optometrist himself, I can only assume it was Dr. Levy, was professional and friendly without seeming fake. Went to Dr.Levy for Contacts, got his address from my insurance address book since this was very close to my house. Dr.Levy was very patient and answered all my questions and thought it took a while to find the right pair of contacts (I have astigmatism and it is usually the case) but after 4 visits and 2 different contact pairs i finally found the right pair and i am more than happy with the visit. I do think it is a little expensive paying 250 + after my insurance to get a years supply of contacts but you pay for the expertise and i think it was a worth while investment. read more

Stopped by on a lunch break one day as I was in the plaza having some Joey's Smokin BBQ. I was in the market for some new eyeglasses. Sales associates were friendly and helpful in helping me choose stylish frames. It seems like the team here only puts out the best/newest designer frames in the market. This is not your typical cheapo Lenscrafters or Visionworld selection. I tried on Polo, Oakley, Prada, Oliver Peoples, D&G, and Ferragamos and eventually decided that the Polo frames looked the sharpest. After choosing my frames, I was able to get an appointment for later in the week to see the Doc... he was a hoot and gave me an accurate test. I picked up my glasses a couple of weeks later. I can't wait to go back to use my next year's insurance allowance on a pair of perscription sunglasses! read more

This is not the place to go for cheap glasses. Dr. Levy charges premium prices and gives superior service. I ordered glasses which were not to be ready until we were out of town so Dr. Levy's office sent them via UPS to our vacation condo without further charge. My wife wants to relate her experience there also: They are the only local source I found for Silhouette glasses. I love this lightweight and invisible glass type. I find the new fashion of black 1950ies style frames obnoxious. So I always go to Dr Levy. My second prescription was filled correctly by this office. But I was uncomfortable and did not see as well as my previous glasses. Upon investigation, it turned out that my prescription was not totally correct. Dr. Levy's office fixed this problem although it was not their mistake. It was easy to deal with their office and the service was polite and pleasant although no money was involved. We were visiting family out of town when my husband starting having a foreign body sensation, light sensitivity, and redness of the eye. Concerned about an infection or scratch, we called around to different optometrists in the area. Dr. Levy was able to get my husband scheduled urgently (even though he was a new patient!) and did a thorough assessment of the eye. Drops were prescribed with close follow up. My husband's eye started feeling better immediately after starting treatment. Dr. Levy went out of his way to make sure he could re-examine the eye at follow up appointments to confirm improvement. Not only did we appreciate his prompt scheduling, attention to detail, and accurate diagnosis and management, but his bedside manner is fantastic. Our family that lives in Carlsbad will now see him for all of their eye care needs as they were also so impressed with the way he treated my husband. We will forever be grateful to him! read more

I completely agree with Andrew T about being disgusted about the way Dr. Levy does business. I had the worst experience with him and received, finally, a pair of reading glasses for over $500 that I could've bought anywhere else for $100. It took me months (3 to be exact) to even get a prescription that worked after American Express had to be involved and Dr. Levy kept blaming me for not adjusting well. I had asked for contact lenses at the outset and was told I wouldnt be happy and that the cost would be around $500 out of pocket. He sold me on transition lenses which didnt work for me..even after wearing for 8 weeks and suffering headaches and such limited vision that I was wearing my old reading glasses just to function. Although the front office staff was kind enough, it still reeks of a business that is desperate to con their customers into overpaying and bait-and-switch techniques. They never tell you what your cost will be and customer satisfaction is a foreign term. This is one of the least professional offices I have ever visited and i would strongly discourage anyone from seeking services from Dr. Levy. read more

Dr Levy helped me with an emergency situation with a cut to my eye. He was so helpful and fit me into his schedule so he could make a plan for me. He checked in with me every single day until my eye was out of the woods, to make sure I didn't have an infection and everything was going smoothly. I am so grateful Dr. Levy was so wonderful and helpful during a very painful accident. Nina in the front office is also super sweet and wonderful. I stumbled upon Dr. Levy through my insurance company website. I knew ahead of time what glasses I wanted to order and had the style and color numbers in-hand when I had my appointment. The first thing I noticed while waiting around for my appointment was that frames I had seen for $105 online were $195 in his office. Not that I am in anyway adverse to egregious retail pricing, but when I asked him about it he was extremely annoyed. He assured me that since my optical insurance was paying for it, it would cost me the same as if I ordered it online without insurance. Oh, I see, so it's OK to rip off an insurance company instead of a patient? At any rate, I had not time to deal with this, so I had my exam and went to order my frames. Even though I had the specific style number, he wrote down the style number of a different set of frames. And I protested and he said, "Well, you said you wanted the biggest pair of raybans and that's what those are." I went ahead with it even though I hadn't tried on what he suggested since he didn't have them in stock, paid my $150 or whatever, and headed out. The glasses weren't ready for 3 weeks, at which point I picked them up and instantly hated the frames. But I figured I'd sleep on it. I still hated them. He made me wait a week to get an appointment to come in to "discuss" -- I was already annoyed. Finally, I have my appointment and he informs me that the cost of new glasses is going to be $369 plus $49 to turn the original frames back into sunglasses. That "included" the 30% discount that he was so generous to give to me. Mind you, the frames RETAIL for $120 at most locations. Any my prescription is mild. At any rate, I am disgusted with the way he does business and I don't think anyone else should suffer through what I had to endure. I will now be buying the frames I wanted online. As I should have done in the first place. Thank you Dr. Levy, for ripping off my insurance company and driving all of our premiums higher because of your greed. Next time you want to over-charge, consider actually providing a beneficial service. read more

Excellent doctor, very thorough with my contact lens examination. Business practice is a little questionable though. I'm pretty knowledgeable about my insurance company's benefits now and let's just say their front-desk wasn't very straightforward. The lady rushed her explanation of the total amount I owed and when I pressed for details, she made up some bogus story only to confirm with my insurance company later that what she told me was a lie. My insurance covers X amount for any contact lens services (this includes examinations and orders of contact lens boxes, it's not complicated). They made up some BS about how insurance didn't cover a specific part of my contact lens examination so I had an extra charge of $160. What they ACTUALLY did was use up ALL my insurance allotment on their services and pushed the cost of $160 worth of contact lens boxes on to me. (Which in the end would've been nicer to know that I have options to go elsewhere to buy my contacts). Come on now guys - this would have been an easy 5-star review for you guys had you been straight forward with me. I might've just purchased the boxes from you guys anyway! read more

I have been going to Dr Levy and Nina for 16 years. At one point 9 years ago I had moved to PA. My insurance provided (2 sets of lenses) and the optometrist could not get the dizzyiness and nausea to stop after 2 sets of lenses. Dr. Levy and Nina sent me my glasses from CA that were perfect. So when I moved back to CA I tried an other provider that took our insurance. The eye exam indicated a stigmatism. After 2 sets of lenses I was having trouble again with the lenses. Dr. Levy and Nina immediately thought that I could not adjust to the stigmatism. They gave me another exam and ordered new glasses and sunglasses for me. I picked up today and they are perfect. I have to sing the praises of Dr. Levy. I will try to make this story short. My husband went into the ER with eye pain. He had just gone through radiation on his spinal cord so eye pain was extra scary for us. We were first sent to a doctor in Oceanside. After several visits and a lot of $$$$ No help! We had been going to Dr. Levy for our glasses and thought to ask him for a referral. He came in after he was closed and did a complete exam. He found a recurring tear on his cornea. Dr Levy put a bandage lens on his eye. Genius!!!!!! (Why didn't the other doctors do that. Grrrrr) Since then he has done a lot of research and put in hours and hours helping us. Due to the pain the hole is causing, it is difficult for my husband to change the lens himself. Dr. Levy changes the lens every week for him. Doc is in constant contact with the specialist in Oceanside (who will remain nameless due to the total lack of help from). There is not enough stars available for what I want to give him. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Levy's for more than 20 years. He is an excellent optometrist. He has always shown great care and patience in caring for my eyes. He has the most up to date diagnostic equipment. I recently tried another doctor for my eyes because it was closer to my work and I thought I had a serious problem with my eyes. Today when I went to see Dr. Levy he wanted to check my retina to make sure it was okay based on the diagnosis from the other office. He was able to photograph the back of my eye and show me that everything was fine. This all took a few minutes and it was done without having to dilate my eyes. The other doctor did not have the equipment to photograph my eye and spent 20 minutes with a super bright light shined in each eye. And they had to give me drops to dilate my eyes. What a difference with Dr. Levy! He is professional, extremely knowledgeable, and thorough. Working with him as my eye doctor over the years has been such a positive experience. I recommend him most highly. Oh, and I ordered the cutest pair of glasses from his great selection. read more

I have to say after reading the last review on Dr.. Levy i need to share my experience. it was quit pleasant and professional. For years i would get my prescription glasses at Vision World but really saw the value in the practice when i encountered an eye trauma. Dr. Levy was exceptional on getting me back to work and healed quickly. He went way out of his way to ensure i was making progress and didn't take any chances. He went as far as walking to the pharmacist with me to get the right medication and calling periodically to check in on my progress. i cant say enough nice things about this practice. Doctor Levy walked in and started the test without introducing himself or even looking me in the face or acknowledging me in any way. I had to politely say "I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name", then he stopped and introduced himself. Half way through the test, he started taking retina pictures which are not covered by insurance and require an extra charge. I stopped him and said that I dont want this extra procedure. At that point he got very impatient and rude telling me that I can go and find another doctor if I don't let him do what he has been doing for years. He became very personal and outright angry when I told him that all I want was an eye exam and no extra procedures. The whole time I was very calm and nice to him, eventually telling him that I don't feel comfortable and I will go to a different doctor for my exam. At that point he got up and left the room. I was left to show myself the way out. No "goodbyes" were exchanged ;) Bottom line, this doctor is childish and rude, very unprofessional and clearly only cares about how much he can charge you. I recently walked into Dr. Levy's shop to look at frames for my daughter and to see if someone could spontaneously look at my eye that was watering severely and was super sensitive to light. Even though it was late in the evening and they were about to close Dr. Levy took the time for me thankfully. He was very thorough in his exam and found that I had a badly scratched cornea. I had to go back to see him daily for several days and he was very caring and detailed each and every time. He had genuine concern for getting my eye healthy again. Letter I wrote to my insurer after my horrible experience: Hello, I called your customer service dept today and they asked me to relate the following experience I had with one of your providers: Dr. Howard Levy 6949 El Camino Real La Cost CA 92009 I confirmed that they accepted our insurance before the meeting. At the appointment the check in woman mentioned an additional charge for the contact lens fitting/prescription and said that it depends on my insurance and can vary. I asked the doctor Levy when he arrived at the consult room. He said that he didn't have time to go into the financial aspect of the service but not to worry that my insurance was good, he sees patients all the time under my program, and that his prices are competitive. He said it as if the question bothered him and came of a bit aggressive. When I went to pay my bill I was told that it would be $270 and that took into account the $115 for the lenses and a $50 discount for the service (so the bill would have been $435 w/o insurance! I use standard contacts that run $25 a box!). I told them that I didn't come prepared to spend that much and that I would prefer to pay for the eye exam only. She said that wasn't an option and that I'd be getting a better deal with this package. I let her know that I normally have to budget for expenses that high and that I'd need to wait for my next pay check to buy the lenses. She said that she didn't know what the price was and that she'd ask the doctor. The doctor came out of the consultation room and told me that I needed to buy the whole package and that if I didn't I could find another doctor. I told him that I didn't come prepared to spend that much and that I just wanted to pay for the exam. He told me to I need to leave at least 50% of the total paid or I would need to take out the lenses (trial) immediately and get out of his office/store. In short, he refused to give me the price of the eye exam and threw me out of his office. He was extremely confrontational and intimidated me with his speech and body language. I was humiliated that I had to take off the contact lenses in front of another customer in the waiting/showroom area. I feel that he was basically trying to scam me and in order to do so he had his secretary stonewall me when asking for a pricing breakdowns and ultimately tried to scare me into paying 50% by threatening to kick me out. I decided to give him back his lenses instead of paying his high prices because no provider can obligate a patient to buy his product. I have never filled a complaint in my life. So, I do not make a habit out of this kind of a thing. But this situation warrants your attention. read more

I can't thank Dr. Levy enough. I recently developed a nasty infection in my eye. Of course it came on late in the afternoon on a Friday. I called Dr. Levy's office on the slight chance I might catch him but it was too late. They were closed. To my surprise Dr. Levy not only returned my call but came into the office after hours to diagnose and treat me. Not a single other optometrist bothered to return my call even the next day. Without his dedication I would have suffered through the whole weekend. He correctly diagnosed and prescribed the appropriate treatment. He took the time to call me the next day for a status update and then had me come in on Monday for a follow up. If I ever do need glasses, he will be my first choice without question.
