Dr. Piper is a by the book surgeon and really knows his stuff. The staff was wonderful and took great care of me pre- and post-op. For anyone who has had these issues, it is a process which requires patience and work on the patient's part in the healing process. Before the surgery I was in constant agonizing pain. My experience with Dr. Piper was incredibly traumatizing. I paid over $1,000 for the initial consultation and flew to Florida from Virginia, then was corralled around the office all day long, sat in rooms watching informational videos that were completely irrelevant to my issue, and didn't actually get to sit down and talk to him until an hour before closing. My mom and I were there from 7am to 9pm and didn't actually get to see dr. Piper until 8pm. Throughout the day, nothing about the tests they ran were explained to us and none of our questions were answered. As someone with severe tmj and chronic illness, by the end of the day I was in so much pain and exhausted and confused. Dr. Piper clearly wanted to just get us out of there and was belittling and rude when we asked questions about his treatment plan. We were given a completely fatalistic answer, told that I would need to get a $50,000 fat graft survey as soon as possible or risk severe deterioration of my disks in my jaw joint. This was framed as my only option for for relief, which was devastating. He refused to hear or answer any questions about risks of his surgery. Also told me that my facial structure was abnormal which triggered some body dysmorphia for me. Seek tmj treatment elsewhere. Don't put your trust in someone who lacks patience and listening skills. I can't imagine going through such an intense and traumatic surgery and then dealing with such an asshole post op. This was denied by a CRPS expert Dr. Yi from Washington University/Barnes Jewish hospital. Dr. Piper charged me $1950 for a 2-hour consultation, an exorbitant fee, RIP OFF! He treated me in a humiliating, condescending way without providing any useful information or any answers as far as my treatment of TMJ which was why I travelled from Europe to Florida at additional expense. During the consultation, he kept repeating "You must own your problem." And he compared my alleged CRPS to a "kicked dog." Once we informed him of Dr. Yi's conclusion, Dr. Piper withdrew me from his patient list without providing any useful TMJ help and denied to give me even partial refund. Dr. Piper has enormous ego and anyone who dares to have any question about anything will be humiliated. We had to wait from 7am till 7pm for a useless consultation. I had an appointment to speak with Stephanie regarding getting an appointment. Had never experienced this before, normally I call in, get an appointment and show up on time. I called one minute before my phone appointment and was put on hold for 15 minutes. I hung up, called again and was told she knew I was waiting and was put on hold again. Ten minutes later I was getting pissed, hung up and called again. I was given someone else who spent our entire conversation telling me to settle down, relax etc, all the while I kept asking to move forward, ask any questions you need answers to and tell me when the appointment is scheduled for. She then said maybe I didn't want to do business with them and put someone else on who also said they didn't want to make my appointment. Dr. Mark Piper, MD, DDS is the best surgeon and a brilliant diagnostician. Of course, as a dentist, I have heard him lecture internationally, and after serious car accident in 2003- the entire family in the car went for evaluation- he saved my life as the damaged TMJ pain is often a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10. The staff and facilities are excellent. Do not be surprised to see patients of all ages from children to active seniors. During follow-up appointments, I met several health care personnel , athletes, concerned parents, and surgeons of all specialties -most had looked for years to answers to facial pain questions that were lucky enough to find Dr. Piper. A very kind and thoughtful "old school" gracious, ethical, and nurturing physician worthy of your trust and whom you will adore!!! My Hero!! This doctor claims that the fat graft procedure he performs has 99% success rate, while in fact there is no scientific evidence that it works and no proof of 99% success. He charges people 6 times what it normally costs for similar type of procedure elsewhere. There is not a single research article that this doctor has published in any respectable research journal. If you start questioning what he is doing, he begins treating you like a lesser human being. Avoid this practice if you are looking for professional, honest and medically sound care. read more

I had tmj surgery done by Dr Piper. All was fine until there were complications post-op. The stitches came out a few days after surgery and you could see into my ear. It was bleeding and gross. I was told over the phone "it's no big deal, we'll check it when you come in next." A week later. I also had trouble with the post op therapy machine running smoothly, it would jerk to one side. Dr Piper put it in my mouth and held it there watching it happen as tears ran down my face. I finally pushed his hands away and took it out of my mouth because the pain was more than I could take. He kicked me out of the exam room because I was crying and said,"when you can act like an adult, I'll let you come back in my office. Until then, you can sit in the hall." He showed me to a chair in the corner of the hallway and left me there for an hour, like I was a child being punished for something. I just wanted a machine that didn't hurt me and yank my jaw. At that point he'd gotten paid by the insurance for the surgery, and didn't need me anymore and didn't want to deal with anything less than a "perfect patient." I felt used and abused. I've never been treated so horribly by anyone, much less by a medical professional. I never returned to his office after that and got treatment elsewhere. He's not worth the hype or the money. There are plenty of other providers who will truly care about your long term recovery and be there beginning to end for you. read more

I had a fat graft surgery performed by Dr. Piper in early March, and woke up feeling like at least 70% of my TMJ pain had subsided. I agree that this surgery is a journey; I am 6 months post-op and still have some pain and my bite is changing, however, this is all normal. It is a very slim chance that this doctor can't change your life for the better. As I mentioned previously, yes he is expensive, but for good reason. The fact that Amy C. is questioning his capabilities is absurd, as his credentials are very impressive as well as all of his research conducted. I am not only speaking of myself, but also for the MANY (50+) patients of his that I have grown to know. He was my 16th doctor I had seen, the previous 15 (all in Los Angeles) could not diagnose me and I was pushed around as if I wasn't a human being. I came to Dr Piper when I was 14 years old as I was experiencing my jaw locking & becoming stuck. It clicked, was painful, and trying to unlock my jaw in the morning was a daily scary experience. He performed his fat graft on my joints. It fixed the problem of my jaw locking & clicking which was great! He did an amazing job of taking that pain away, and I have to honestly say my jaw hasn't once clicked or locked again ever since! I am forever grateful for that aspect. :) I followed his post-op directions religiously, and trusted him 110% throughout the process. However, as I continued to grow & develop after surgery, new problems set in post-op..... After recovery, when it was time to stop wearing the surgical mouth splint at night, my mouth didn't know how to rest on it's own without it - My jaw healed in a way that became dependent on the surgical splint. Soon after that, not only did my bone stop growing as I grew & developed after surgery, my jaw bone began to degenerate around my joints. If he could have figured out a way to not have my mouth heal in a splint and instead to just band our mouth into our natural bite, that would be amazing. My bones degenerated so much from not knowing how to hold my mouth (especially at night) without the surgical splint, that I couldn't close my mouth properly anymore. My back molars were the only teeth that could touch when "closing" my mouth by the end of High School (age 18). (Other Doctors later recognized arthritis in my jaw joints, which is now better. I was kind of frustrated Dr Piper didn't recognize this problem as he kept trying to figure out why my joints continued to degenerate.) Post-op appointments, Dr Piper told me as a young teenage girl (15 years old) that my facial structure was aesthetically deformed when I always thought of myself previously as pretty -- up until that moment. As a young impressionable girl, I was crushed with those words, which changed the way I looked at myself for the next 10 years. He operated on me again. After my 2nd surgery (age 16 ish), he told me I'd need a 3rd. He was planning to operate on me again. I didn't feel like a person anymore, I felt like meat constantly being cut into trial and error as I blindly trusted & kept paying for all these expenses cause I didn't know where else to turn. When I looked into the mirror, I didn't see myself anymore. The 2nd surgery material, silicone, caused additional deterioration of my bone. I was haunted daily with these jaw problems & his words about being deformed through high school and all of college. When I was around 22 years old, he was kind enough to admit that he didn't know what to do with my deteriorating jaw bone, and advised me to seek a 2nd opinion. I am grateful he was so honest and knew his limitations and set me out on my search to find answers. I am now 25 and finally by a miracle, I found a different surgeon in Santa Barbara to trust who fixed ALL the jaw problems (problems from before & after fat grafts).
