One of the nicer Asian restaurants in terms of ambience in the region. Nicer inside than one looks like on the outside. Good service. Unfortunately the food is very Americanized. Prices were decent for the lunch specials. I tried Hunan pork. Supposed to be spicy but it wasn't as usual in the Americanized versions. It was in a brown sauce that was really too strong. They were red pepper flakes and no other peppers. There was broccoli that was fresh but the canned mini corn was sour. A few pieces of zucchini. The meet was not remarkable. No taste really I could even tell that it was pork roll ... for all I knew it could've been beef. The sweet-and-sour pork was horrible. Dried out pieces of chewy pork. What stood out here was there hot and sour soup. It was the best I've had in a long time. Definitely getting this again. I plan to come again and try something else and making sure to avoid their brown sauce. This is one of those places that serves Chinese Japanese etc. food. A few years ago I gave Dragon Chef a not great review. I didn't order again for a very long time. Until recently my friend wanted to try it and I thought fine. I guess I'll give them another chance. Soooo many good options, all cooked well and flavorful. I LOVE their Hibachi dishes (though they are not cooked in front of you). Huge amount of rice, vegetables, filet mignon, and scallops. It also comes with salad and soup. We also get sushi - CCC, Spicy, Girl, and Red Dragon are some of our favorite. Always fresh and a ton of pieces from the roll. They offer hibachi, Chinese, and Japanese dishes so there is something for everyone who enjoys Asian dishes. My husband and I decided to finally give this place a try and it does not disappoint. We got 2 teppan yaki chicken with phenomenal soup plus we also got the tuna roll, salmon roll, and the shrimp tempura roll. Everything tasted exceptional though we had to ask for the Miso soup. Went for my baby sisters 24th birthday and everything was really great. We got hibachi dinners and my sister got sushi. She loved al of it and the hibachi meals were great. Best miso soup I've had with a hibachi dinner anywhere. The broth isn't watered down at all and had a great depth of flavor. My chicken and shrimp were *perfectly* cooked. We like to get Chinese when we are in town as there are no Chinese restaurants in rural Rappahannock County about 15 miles from Culpeper.. On January 16, 2020, we decided to try Dragon Chef as it received more stars than any other Chinese restaurant in Culpeper. We ordered hot & sour soup, I ordered steamed chicken & vegetables & my husband got the tangerine beef. All tasted very good. I ate my leftovers the next evening and ate the remainder of the very sticky rice. For the next 5 days I had severe abdominal pains, did not leave the house even for church, and stayed in bed most of those days. This place has the best asian food in town! Their sushi is very well done and all of their hibachi is delicious. I definitely suggest trying their "yum yum" sauce. Owner was very rude. We called to discuss a mistake with our order and the woman who tells me she is the owner, yelled at me and told me "everyone knows" that silverware is only included at dinner. When I told her I felt she was being rude, she did not respond. When I told her that I wanted to go to a place that valued their customers and maybe I should go to the other Chinese place in down (that gives you free Chinese doughnuts with your order!) she told me that was fine. Chinese food is too salty! We ordered chicken broccoli and tofu vegetables. They both had virtually the same sauce, a viscous brown sauce. We ended up using rice to soak up sauce and then eating with new scoop of white rice. The broccoli was shrunken and overcooked. The moo shu vegetable was also over salted. We didn't take our leftovers, which is a first for us. The highlight was a pleasant avocado roll and the shrimp shumai were fine. I read in one review the Japanese food was better and wished we had ordered that. read more

This was an amazing restaurant. I ordered the General T'so Chicken w/ a plate of chicken fried rice. It was delicious. The customer service was very good. Courteous staff, nice environment. I think this place is trying to be all things to all people. There was a Chinese menu, a Japaneses menu, and a sushi menu. I went for the sushi. I got the cucumber roll and the house special roll. Cucumber rolls are typically a big favorite of mine. I was disappointed. The roll came soaked in some sort of a sauce/water. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great. The house roll was delicious though! Ate a late lunch today and we enjoyed the food. My biggest concern, however, was that crab rangoon was being made at the table behind us. They put the wrappers directly on the table, not on a tray or plate, while waiting to put them together. I could not believe that they would think that was sanitary, because it wasn't. I also saw no evidence that the two servers who were putting them together had washed their hand after taking orders, serving customers, or looking at their cell phones. When the rangoons were put together, the table was wiped down with a damp cloth, not something that would make anyone think the table was as clean as a plate taken out of a hot dishwasher. Stopped during an evening roadtrip from Arlington to Charlottesville, after searching Yelp for food locations and finding little that seemed appetizing or with positive reviews - until we saw one for Dragon Chef (thanks Bonnie C!) Easy to find right off business 29, at first I must admit I was somewhat dismayed by the decor - your average "strip mall food joint" booths and short tables, with a small sushi bar on the left side. The right half of the place was separated by a lower waist-high wall, where the habachi grills were set up on the other side. Around 8 people were finishing up their dinners on the Habachi side, all very casual for a Friday evening (about 9pm) and the sushi side was eerily vacant. Ambiance aside, the food and prices were amazing. We were starving and tired, (and I wasn't driving) so I ordered the large bottle of house hot sake (16.95) which was - unexpectedly - a true "large" - the size of a wine bottle - and quite good! We ordered the "love boat" for $49, definitely enough for 2! Starter of standard miso soup, followed by a large wooden boat stacked with very fresh fish - nigiri and slices of salmon, yellowtail, tuna, striped bass, Spanish mackrel and flounder... plus 2 rolls - one California with avocado and one tuna. Service was very attentive - and even the fortunes from our cookies were great. In fact, as we plan on heading back through Culpepper about lunchtime on Sunday, my guess is that you will find us there for round 2! read more

I like the fact that they serve both Japanese and Chinese. Neither is top notch, but both are decent and the fact that they serve both is awesome, because you can get a variety of dishes for a diverse group of people. I recommend going for lunch because it's way more than enough food for a much cheaper price. Their lunch combination Chinese combos usually provide lunch and dinner :P Their hibachi is no exception. Their sushi is second best in town. Second best to Osaka, who they just can't compete with, for specials or quality, sorry guys. That's not to say they aren't good, just that they aren't the best in town. They skimp a bit on the hand rolls, and they don't have a very good selection of 'special' rolls. They also come out a bit slow. Some places won't allow you to tell the chef what you want, here they will, if you know a certain roll, they will allow you to tell them what's in it and the chef will re-create it. Note: I read a review that said their fish wasn't fresh but I have NEVER smelled or suspected that their fish wasn't fresh and I order sushi and sashimi a lot from different places. I've never smelled theirs as fishy, and never seen anything that would lead me to think it wasn't fresh. I'm not sure what happened with that person. I will say that for whatever reason it's just not as good quality as Osaka. I think they could use some practice in their rolls. They are never quite as stable as Osakas is, and their service isn't quite as friendly and their wait staff doesn't smile like hardly ever :P But they are still more than accommodating to any requests we've made in the past. Their sweet tea is strange, it's not your typical tea and it's never sweet enough for my nephew. I don't like it so I skip it. It's never consistent in how it's made. Their Hibachi is good. This is where they have one up on Osaka. Their yum yum sauce is thick and good, not like Osaka who has runny yum yum. They don't scorch the veggies, but they do cook them perfectly. They just do something extra to their rice, and their meat isn't over cooked. I just like their hibachi better, and my whole family tends to agree, which makes me really sad. I can't talk them into going to Osaka so I can sneak sushi while they have Hibachi. Oh well. Their Chinese food is ok. It's what you expect from most chinese places. My favorite things are their Vegetable Lo Mein, their Combination Fried Rice (I get it without the chicken, i recommend you do to) and their Pan Fried Dumplings, which no place around town that i have seen is as good as their dumplings, but I haven't tried a few places yet so I'll get back to you on that. Those are my go-to dishes at any restaurant, things I will try to tell me how good they are, before I branch into other things. If a place can't make a bomb fried rice, it fails as a Chinese restaurant IMO. read more
