I had to try their infamous lattes before they closed down. Interestingly, their last day open was 2/8, but there was no notice on the website or the exterior of the restaurant mentioning this. The interior truly encapsulated diner vibes, with bright colors and high top counters. While service was friendly, they appeared short staffed, with two people covering all the seating and take out orders. My singular drink took a while to complete, even with only one person ahead of me, so this would not have been a good grab and go option. The menu had fun latte combinations along with sodas and alcoholic beverages. However, there was little customization in the drinks, as I was not asked for my ice or sugar level, nor my milk option. *Blueberry Maple Matcha Latte: the blueberry component was quite apparent, although the maple was overshadowed. The drink was not too sweet at baseline, and the whipped cold foam was not overbearing. The matcha could have been stronger though and mixed a bit more. My Caramelized Banana Latte was delicious. My friend liked hers too. The Pistachio Matcha Latte tasted a bit artificial to me. The potato latkes were tasty and I liked the applesauce dip. Came here around 10pm after being at Park & Rec for a gethering. Sitting in the retro diner gave the full experience, with only around 8 seats(?) it offers a variety of food choices and coffees. Dreamboat is a very nice retro dinner blended with a trendy clean approach. They serve breakfast from 7 am to 11 am, and lunch from 11 am to 3 pm. For breakfast, I had the breakfast sandwich which came with a savory and delicious breakfast sausage, cheddar cheese, egg omelette, a house Hollandaise sauce on a lightly toasted brioche bun for $12.95. The breakfast sandwich was very flavorful, especially the sausage patty and the sauce. The sauce was more cheesy than a traditional Hollandaise, but it worked very well here. However, the sandwich was one dimensional with regards to its texture. It was soft all the way through, not that there's anything wrong with that. But for my taste, it could have used a little more texture. Nevertheless, it was a very good breakfast sandwich. I was walking the neighborhood and noticed this cute little spot! Super cute vibe inside with limited bar seating and adorable decor. This is a vegan spot, which isn't advertised anywhere. They have a full restaurant in the back called Vulture, which I heard great things about. My friend and I ordered a date milkshake for dessert and it was surprisingly delicious!! Super cool 50's diner. They have limited menu for both breakfast hours and lunch hours. We were lucky to arrive 10 minutes before 3pm and were able to order a snack of the Giardiniera Italian pickles and some wavy fries. Also got a chocolate malt shake and espresso martini. Altogether it was the perfect mixture of sweet, salty, alcohol and ice cream to tide us over to dinner. Yes finally got to check out this place. It's been on my list since it opened. Small, but cute diner. I ordered the orange cream latte bc at the moment they didn't have what I really wanted which was the pistachio matcha latte. Orange cream latte was tasty, but I have had better elsewhere. Asked for the lunch special of the day and it was a French dip sandwich (mushroom based) with fries. Ordered that and so glad I did! They way they put together the mushroom, onions and juices (not sure what they used for the "au jus") was delish. Very flavorful for vegan food. I was so hungry and it tasted go good I forgot to take a picture of it LOL. I didn't think I would get full, but I did and didn't get to order a milkshake. Which just means I have to come back. Dreamboat and Vulture has livened up the boulevard with a diner style venue. The space is incredibly small, yet there are stools for the counter and a few tables on the opposite side. Tables is a generic word-these are tiny, just enough for a drink and small plate. Service is great. With a line out of the door, I quickly received my Salted Toffee coffee (iced,) and cinnamon bun. The counter was full of people, and yet, the staff just made it all work. The Salted Toffee coffee was very sweet, swirling the salt a nice touch. Ahh but the cinnamon roll is so very tender and cinnamony, I haven't eaten one better in this city. Metered parking, bus and bicycle lanes. Walkable boulevard with plenty to see. It's more of a grab and go kind of spot. Lots of people coming in for coffee. Staff was friendly upon entry. Line was out the door. One staff was taking orders and the other was making drinks. There were a few seats with plates leftover. We ordered and then waited a bit but they didn't clear any of the seats. When the line died down another person asked the employee if they could clear the plates from a specific seat and they did but did not clear any other seats. I waited a minute and then asked if they could also clear a different seat and she said she would get to it. It was very awkward. The food arrived before the drinks. Tried: potato latke - so crispy! It was nice and crunchy but didn't have much flavor. Came with two 'sauces' but one was very sweet and the other tasted like sour cream. Sandwich - the breakfast sandwich was okay Cherry cola espresso tonic - this was awful tasting. I would avoid. It was very sour/bitter. Guess I'm just not a fan of tonic. Absolutely loved Dreamboat diner nestled in University Heights! It is such a great addition to this street. I was craving a coffee and saw that this place not only makes great cocktails and food, but they also have a robust coffee menu. I tried the Carmelized banana latte with cold foam and oat milk (iced which the bartender said was the correct choice!). It was really delicious - definitely less banana forward and more of that caramel butterscotch flavor. Not too sweet or overpowering. I would definitely return to try the food and the speakeasy (in the back). This would be a super cute place to take a friend from out of town. Be advised there is not much seating in the main area- only a few parties can be seated. It is also not a work friendly spot - laptops discouraged. You can always order to go as well! read more

I came here on a Sunday morning around 10:45 AM. There's street parking only, but I got lucky and found a spot nearby. When you walk in, the space is super cute, but it's small. There are about 10 barstools total so it can feel a little tight if you're not a fan of being close to other people while you eat. The place was full when I arrived, but thankfully there was a seat open with a bit of space between me and the next guest. I was greeted right away and served water. They offer both sparkling and distilled. There was only one waitress handling the entire room, which wasn't an issue. I ordered the: Pistachio Matcha Latte (hot): it was excellent. Perfect for a chilly morning, not overly sweet, and really well balanced. I'd absolutely order it again. Potato Latka: it was also delicious. Very crispy, not greasy at all, and the combination of sour cream and applesauce was surprisingly great. The portion is smaller than it used to be, but it's also about half the price now. I actually prefer that, especially when dining solo, since it makes it easier to try more items. They've extended breakfast until 3 PM instead of ending at 11 AM, and lunch starts at 11 AM as well, which is a nice option. I also noticed they have a punch card for drinks (after a certain number you get a free one), which I only saw when someone ordered to-go. I meant to ask about it, but forgot before I left. I wish it had been offered to me while I was dining. My one real complaint is timing. My food came out about 15 minutes after ordering, and my latte arrived a few minutes after the meal. I would've loved to have the coffee first while waiting for breakfast. Overall, this is a very cute spot with friendly staff and really tasty food and drinks. It does get crowded, and service can feel a bit stretched when it's busy, but I still enjoyed my visit and would come back. My friend and I shared a double cheese burger (Ya.. it's all vegan) and it was really yummy !! I'd now love to try all the menu items eventually :) Please note that brekkie is served until 11 am and then lunch from 3 pm. After that, it's mainly desserts and drinks until midnight. Came here at 10am on a Saturday, just in time to try out their breakfast menu. We were lucky to grab the last 2 seats at the counter. In the back behind the coffee machines. There are only 10 seats total at the counter, otherwise a couple standing spots and everything else is to-go. Everyone who helped us was extremely friendly and helpfully answered my questions - however we we did have 4 separate people help us and when we were tying to get the bill it felt impossible to get someone's attention (possibly because we were in the back behind something). It took us almost 15 minutes to get someone's attention to bring us our bill. This place feels deliberately misleading in how they've written their menu. It is a vegan place that doesn't say vegan on the menu, and instead boasts items like ricotta, sausage, hollandaise, sour cream, omelette, etc. Tried the breakfast sandwich and potato latke to start. The latke was nice and crunchy, if a little greasy. I preferred ketchup with it over the two sauces provided. The sandwich was just okay, as I found it much too greasy as well. We also ordered a fig milkshake once we had finished our meal. For me, it was much too sweet and the oat flavor came across too strongly (ice cream was oat milk based). This place is open until 12am and has lots more to try on their menu - lunch, snacks, and lots of fun looking cocktails. I would definitely come back, but bot for their breakfast food. read more

Old diner vibes that brought me some nostalgia with Lucky's place (RIP). Located in one of my favorite smaller neighborhoods in San Diego, it's a place that you have to go out of your normal route to visit since Uni Heights is more of a lunch/dinner spot but it's worth the visit! The milkshakes are delicious and the menu is simple enough for those that end up with decision paralysis to not feel bad about not sampling everything. I had high expectations for this place since Kindred is one of my favorite places that exist. Their service was wonderful - employees are kind and attentive. This place is a vegan diner (to my knowledge) although it is not listed anywhere in the restaurant, menu, or website which is concerning. "Cheeseburger" is yummy and tastes like a McDonalds cheese burger. Pistachio matcha was also very yummy and unique. Cherry cola espresso was refreshing. Cocktails: the cocktails were a miss, unfortunately unbalanced. The espresso martini was a let down - for a diner with an espresso machine I did expect more. Kindreds cocktails are a 10/10 so I was surprised. Again, I would still give this place a try and I recommend it whether you are vegan or not. read more

Okay I have no idea where to start with this place. I have been a foodie in San Diego for a couple years and I like to think that I have tried many delicious restaurants in the past few years. But this is my favorite cafe/diner/speakeasy hands down. I discovered this place on a whim with friends after an Autumn Festival that was happening a couple of blocks away. The moment we walked in, we were all transported into a different world. The lighting, decoration, and ambiance were all created so intentionally to curate a cozy diner experience. The interior is not very large and there is one long bar seating area. Their menu is absolutely beautiful and I was struggling to make a decision for a while. My 4 friends and I all ordered different drinks, which helped me get an overall idea of the quality of their drink menu. We ordered the pistachio matcha, salted toffee latte, and cherry cola espresso tonic. On my second visit, I tried their blueberry maple matcha latte as well. My favorite drink would have to be the pistachio matcha. As someone who is incredibly picky about their matcha, I was absolutely blown away by this drink. The matcha powder is high quality, and they prepare it in a way/ratio that does not make the drink taste/feel powdery at all. It is so silky smooth and the pistachio flavor only enhances the matcha taste in a subtly sweet way. There is a delicious pistachio cream top that has crushed pistachios sprinkled on top. The salted toffee latte absolutely blew my mind. I've had so much coffee in San Diego and there are only a handful of cafes that make me feel as though the $6-8 are worth it. The espresso was super high quality and rich without any overly acidic taste. The toffee flavor perfectly sweetened the drink without making the sweetness overpower the coffee taste. It was incredibly smooth as well, and I believe they use macadamia almond milk. The blueberry matcha was not as yummy as the pistachio one in my opinion, but I did finish my drink in about 7 minutes which says a lot because I am a very slow drinker and rarely finish any drink. The cherry cola espresso tonic was very fizzy and had a strong, distinct flavor. My friend really enjoyed it! The third time I came, I had the pleasure of trying the cheeseburger. Why was this one of the best burgers I have had in San Diego? It blew my mind to know that it was vegan. The buns were perfectly toasted and had a beautifully buttery taste. The patty was cooked so nicely and I had a hard time believing that it was not meat! The cheese was stretchy but tasted exactly like cheese! My friend and I were just staring at each other in disbelief as we chowed down our burgers. I visited Dreamboat three times in the month of October and even bought their T-shirt because I loved it so much. If I could give it 10 stars, I would. To make it even better, it is nestled in a beautiful area of University Heights, close to Lestat's and Banh Thai! If you are visiting close to 5pm, I would highly recommend visiting the speakeasy in the back, Vulture! The food was even more delicious and I was blown away by the interior. read more

It's clear right when you step in that this team has thought out every intricate detail; from the retro wavy mustard floor to the matching dessert plates. I ordered the Sproda Pop Float and let me tell you the root beer & coffee hit me real good at the first sip! A bit different but I recommend if you are curious about this float. For food I got the crackling tofu sandwhich highly recommend very good, some wavy fries & the yummy braised yuba hoagie ! The coffee menu is what attracted me to this place with drinks like a Cherry Cola Espresso Tonic and Lemon Marmalade Espresso Tonic, both of which we ended up ordering!! Dreamboat is a quaint vintage diner lying just beneath the University Heights sign on Park Blvd. The diner has a lively and upbeat atmosphere with an almost continuous long line of patrons. We showed up at 11AM as they just started serving lunch. You order at the front and sit at the counter or wait by the window for your order. There are about 10 seats at the counter. We were lucky to grab a few as we waited for our number to be called. The food was delicious. The milkshakes were creamy, thick, and had great flavor. We tried their chocolate, vanilla, and coffee flavors. I'd rate them a 9/10. I only wish they were larger. The smashed patty burger was packed with ingredients and flavor. The chef for the burgers had trained for years in a Michelin restaurant in the art of preparing meat and brought his talents to Dreamboat. I'd give their burger a solid 8/10. The fries were classic diner crinkle cut with salt. While not a standout, they remain a staple side dish that I would give a 7/10. In between our bites, we had engaging and playful conversations with the staff. They were incredibly kind and made the experience all the greater. We did not wait long for food, but I felt bad for those who could not sit. I wish the diner was larger and had more chairs. Looking at my receipt, I cannot help but note that this restaurant is on the expensive side. $16 for a burger and $8 for a milkshake is not an everyday expense, but it was a delicious lunch. I am one who avoids vegan pastries, but what a surprise this place is. I frequent all the coffee shops in University Heights and IMHO Dreamboat has THE BEST pastries available in our hood. Their change up with the pastries puts the front end on the same level as Vulture. Really good coffee for a start. The apple gallette is delicious with an amazingly tasty, flakey crust. The sticky rolls are chewy and delectable. And the cookies are fantastic. The latkes look really good. I still need to try one. read more

So, go eff yourself if you're offended this place is vegan. The food is good, the coffee is pretty amazing and the atmosphere is very awesome. I'm not a vegan, or vegetarian, but just wanted to try the place out. The interior is slick. Minimalist, but the details of the simplicity are awesome. It's to the T perfect. Had a sandwich, which honestly rivaled a lot of our local so called great sandwich spots. Had a coffee that, no joke, beats out a lot of the more popular coffee shops around. We had a amazing and fun time trying this new restaurant. The tofu sandwich was an amazing and my husband loved the crispy plant burger he had. We made sure we tried the sundae and I had the affogato. A must try for everyone! read more
