I had an incredibly rough day and was looking forward to treating myself to my favorite dessert from Hinar--the Biscoff cheesecake. Before driving over, I even called the store to make sure they had it. To my surprise, someone actually answered, confirmed they had one slice left, and even offered to hold it for me. My mood instantly changed. After the day I'd had, I was genuinely excited and headed there immediately. I arrived less than 10 minutes later, only to be told they didn't have it after all. To make matters worse, they claimed they don't even hold desserts for customers. It wasn't just disappointing--it was incredibly frustrating. If they couldn't hold it, I would have understood. But giving me false hope and having me rush over for nothing completely ruined the experience. What was supposed to be a small bright spot in my day turned into an even bigger disappointment. Unfortunately, this experience has left such a bad impression that I won't be returning. I have been here many, many times. Metered parking along the street. Staff are friendly and try to move through the line quickly. This is such a cute shop with inside and outside seating. There is a small amount of seating near the windows but more outside around the back. Went on the holiday weekend and it took about 40 minutes to get through the line (started outside on sidewalk) to get my drink and cake slice. My favorite thing here is the lotus biscoff cheesecake $12. Their biscoff matcha is just okay. Note, they charge $7 for their matcha and then charge additional for biscoff, milk preference and foam. The orange blossom latte is good but very sweet. Their drinks run on the sweet side. Be sure to ask for half sweet if needed. I saw so many people ask for their drinks to be remade because it was too sweet and it really impacted the workers. I have tried some other desserts but just wasn't a fan. I knew I loved Hinar within about thirty seconds of walking in. My friends who live in SD come here all the time and recommended it as a must for the best matcha in town. We ordered their signature matcha with the Biscoff cold foam, and it was easily my favorite matcha in Gaslamp. The Biscoff adds just the right amount of sweetness, but the matcha still shines through. I kept thinking about it long after I left. The space is just lovely. Lots of natural light, greenery, and a clean, minimal design that somehow still feels warm. It's the kind of café that makes you want to stay a little longer than you planned. First of all, the cafe was super unsanitary -- there were multiple flies inside of the store that were sitting on the pre made matcha concentrate container and even on the desserts that were about to be served. We waited in a long line so still decided to get the drinks and a dessert but we made sure to ask for our cheesecake to-go since they put the dessert in to a to-go box right from the fridge so the flies don't sit on it unlike the ones that were served on a plate. Also both of the drinks were not good at all, the matcha was so diluted and milky with no early grey taste (we got the earl grey matcha) and the vanilla latte also tasted watered down and had a weird sharp after taste. My favorite spot for matcha in San Diego :D Every time that I go, I am always in love with my drinks as it's very consistent and yummy. I've been getting the vanilla matcha latte with the seasonal biscoff crumble cream (I hope it's more of a permanent menu item, instead of seasonal). It's so delicious! All of my friends have also agreed that they love my drink. When I've gone, I've seen a long line and also a relatively short one. The wait is never too bad, as the line moves pretty fast. I think parking has also been not too bad, as there are plenty of street parking available. The cafe itself is really cute and I love the interior. It's an about time I post my true feelings about Hinar... and it's nothing but AWE. I consider myself a true matcha connoisseur, and can be pretty picky - I consider this one of if not the best matchas I've ever had. Considering all matchas in this area are so pricy, if you're spending money you want it to be worth it- and trust me this one is. I encourage you to try the earl grey with earl grey cold foam - the only downside is it is seriously addicting. I will say the ham and cheese croissant is pretty good, but a tad overpriced, but as is most things in SD. Service is always great and fast, and this is also a great comfortable study spot. The aesthetics of the place is so earthy and zen, I can see myself appreciating this cafe if I lived in East Village. The crowd will come and go, so there's some moments of reprieve if you're considering this spot for reading/working. My "low" rating is because I feel quite mixed about the quality of the consumables. I really enjoyed my orange blossom latte. They accommodated a decaf shot for me, given how late it was in the day. I got a sesame raspberry cake to go, planning for it to be a nice dessert treat for dinner. The mini cake tastes like sesame, and the thin spread of raspberry was nice to break th creaminess. So while it tastes really nice, I was let down by the uneven raspberry taste and since it wasn't enough, the cake turned out to be too sweet when I got to the second half. When we returned to our car a couple hours later, the line had extended far down the block. I certainly can see why because this spot has it all, from gorgeous desserts and specialty cafe drinks, to a warm, earthy ambiance. The Biscoff Basque cheesecake was both decadent and delicious, with an indulgent layer of cookie butter on top and, of course, a Biscoff cookie crust. I also couldn't resist taking home the white chocolate raspberry mousse cake, which was every bit as delightful as it was visually striking, topped with a giant flower that made it almost too pretty to eat. I also enjoyed my orange blossom latte, a unique flavor combination I haven't seen very often. The employees are a mixture of a well oiled machine and great customer service. I was worried about my meter running out and was asking if i could run out real quick to add more but they coordinated on the spot and finishes my drink by the time i completed my payment. Hinar in downtown is such a beautiful and aesthetic spot. I love their earthy color palette (I want that paint color in my house lol) and the overall vibe of the cafe. The main seating area is almost always full, but there's more indoor seating in the back through the hallway (where the bathroom is), plus some outdoor seating to the side. The drinks are really good. I always get mine half sweet, and the flavors are consistently great. They also have a ton of cute, picturesque desserts. They're a bit too sweet for my taste, but you can tell a lot of care goes into making them and they're definitely tasty. Parking can be tricky downtown, and it can get busy with lines, but it's totally worth it for the drinks, desserts, and overall ambiance. FYI, they have a new location up north in Scrips Poway, it's cute but slightly different aesthetic (umm more industrial) and is in a strip mall, so, way more parking! read more

Stopped by Hinar downtown for the first time, although I've been to their scripps ranch location plenty of times, so I'll put both of my reviews in one. Wasn't sure why their cup size had changed at the scripps ranch location but definitely prefer downtown's original cups. Space is definitely smaller downtown, and parking is a bit of a pain but both locations are beautifully decorated. when I arrived at noon there was surprisingly a small line but after I ordered and had gotten my drink, the line definitely went out the door and onto the street. Always enjoy their biscoff matcha with brown sugar and oatmilk, and I loved their blueberry matcha when they had that seasonally. The earl grey matcha I would've liked a bit sweeter but that's just me. The strawberry matcha was my least favorite, as is. The cold foams definitely make the matchas. I've also tried their raspberry cheesecake and strawberry cream cake which were both way too expensive for nothing really special. The raspberry didn't stand out flavor wise. the strawberry cream make was light and tasted like strawberries & cream. read more

Went here with a friend for a coffee run, and to check it out since I had not been and the reviews were good. Upon walking up the place was pretty packed, and the line was almost out the door. The decor inside was very cute lots of neutral colors, very minimalistic. I don't know they were pretty busy the line move pretty fast. Under the counter they had several different pastries, cheesecakes, macaroons, and what looks like little parfaits. I couldn't resist trying some of the items as they looked so delicious. I got one of the earl gray macaroons which was decorated very pretty. Unfortunately it must have got crushed somehow in the bag because it was cracked in the middle. Of course this didn't affect the taste, but I will say it was a little too sweet for my liking. I also ordered a Savory pastry that has spinach and feta cheese inside. I have to say this was absolutely delicious. I warmed it up for a bit before I ate it, and the mix of spinach and cheese was so good and exactly what I was looking for. The Danish Pastry it was in, was nice and crunchy on the outside, while being chewy on the inside. I will definitely be going back for this again. I also ordered an orange blossom latte with almond milk. It was already sweetened, but not too sweet which I was worried about. It had just a slight hint of Orange, the perfect amount in my opinion, as it didn't overtake the drink. I definitely will recommend that others try this Cafe, and I know I will be back for sure. Not the biggest fan of matcha, but the one at Hinar is done to my preference (creamy and sweet). Even though this place is super busy the line always go pretty fast. Drinks are made fast, usually takes 4-5min tops. The biscoff one is my go to choice. I did try the pistachio strawberry one and I made the mistake of not stirring the bottom where all the strawberry syrup is. Discovered HINAR during one of our weekends in SD. I was on a matcha kick and this place was highly recommended. We've already been there a second time since we first tried it. I give this place 5 stars starting with the vibes alone. Really love how this resembles a cute house on the outside. The inside has a simple aesthetic with limited seating in the front and some more in the back. The line can be out the door, especially if you go during the weekends. Love love love the earl grey matcha with earl grey foam. Will always stop by and grab one anytime we are in SD. My husband ordered a latte with the earl grey foam on top the first time and he really enjoyed that one. The first time we went, we were too full to try any of their beautiful cakes so I ended up getting a couple macarons (pistachio, earl grey, and can't remember the third) which were all really good! I've heard a lot of great things about this place. Ended up coming here late into the night so there wasn't many options to pick from. Not a big deal since we liked all of the choices that were left. We ended up getting their Black Sesame cake that has strawberry jam. Unfortunately, it did not live up to the reputation I've heard about this place. The quality of their matcha is so good -- it never comes out too milky, and the green color of the drink is what I like to see. I think I've gotten a matcha here at least 5 times, and it is always consistent in taste. In addition, Hinar is known for their pastries! I've tried their macarons, which are great but nothing to brag about, and their basque cheesecake (also delicious, but "boring" in comparison to the rest of their desserts). So, lucky for me, I have not had a bad experience! If you want to go here on a weekday, though not sure about the mornings, please feel free! But if you want to go during the weekend? The line is long with people waiting along the sidewalk. Last Saturday, my sister waited close to 30 minutes to order, then had to wait additional time to get her order. I would say that it is worth it, especially for their matcha. The cafe itself is modern and definitely a vibe. There are two sides to it -- one side more focused on aesthetics, and the other side with a communal table and a semi-closed off section with tables. People study here! There are also little tables outside down a walkway. The workers are always very nice! The aesthetics really carry this cafe. Limited seating in the front of the house but a couple more seating in a cold earthy concrete aesthetics in the back and outdoors. The desserts display case isn't the most adorned but the desserts do sound interesting. Didn't get any this visit but definitely next time. It is a little steep for a drink but the taste was decent. Overall, the matchas are on the sweet side. Not freshly whisked but the deep vibrant forest green color and earthy taste still make it a great matcha. If you prefer your drinks on the sweet side, you'll enjoy it. The Earl Gray was well complimented with the Matcha and neither outshined the other flavor. I think asking for slightly less sweet would have been perfect for me with the Earl Grey Matcha (4/5). They ask if you want foam on top, but don't state that it's an additional cost. There's a lot of fun options for the foam that seems yummy though, seasonal at the time was a biscoff foam. My friends also got the earl grey foam as well as the pistachio foam which were both subtle but added a nice enhancement to the earl grey matcha and the vanilla matcha respectively. Nice, quaint little dessert shop in downtown SD. I don't really like the location, I walked a few blocks from Asa Bakery and perhaps it would've been worth the short drive. The area surround area smelled bad on the walk over, so that was unfortunate. The bakery itself has a simple, aesthetic design. This also goes for the dessert. I ended up getting their sesame strawberry cake, which I surprisingly really liked! I was skeptical about the combo, but my husband didn't really want any of the other flavor combos, so we settled on this one. The sesame and strawberry worked together really well.
