Large portion size! 2 scoops was so massive compared to most other ice cream places. It was so much that even I, an ice cream fanatic, struggled to finish on my own. Might be a hot take, but I actually wasn't a huge fan of the flavors. Many of the ones I tried had weird combinations that I didn't like. There were a few other flavors that I would've wanted to try, but I was getting self conscious about asking for too many samples. I settled for the honey lavender and another flavor, but it was alright. I honestly can't remember much about either flavor. I'm inclined to say good consistency, but flavor wise, not good enough for me to really remember it. I think Salt & Straw can be fun and a really nice break from so many stores that just serve straightforward flavors, but I do think some flavors were a bit confusing. Parking at this location is just street parking. You might get lucky and snag a 15 min spot, but most of it is paid.

You can't go wrong with any of the flavors, I love that you're able to taste as many flavors as you want before finally settling on "the one" don't let the long lines discourage you the line goes by super fast and the ice cream is so Good it will make you forget you had to wait. I ordered the strawberry coconut vegan ice cream, I don't know how they get it to be so creamy without any dairy but it was amazing. I love that they have a seasonal menu that rotates monthly.

Late post from Wednesday when I went to get my birthday double scoop of Chocolate Gooey Brownie and Salted Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Now I have new favorite flavors. I went when it wasn't busy and went in and out in less than 5 mins. Parking was easy because I went during off hours of mid afternoon.

Salt & Straw rolled out their June 2026 Chef Series which sold out quick; Fortunately two were brought back for last chance scoops: 4.5/5 CHOCOLATE CARAMEL SMOKED BUDINO By Alex Meyer and Luciana Giangrandi - BOlA DE & WALRUS RODEO, Miami Chocolate olive oil custard, caramel candied hazelnuts, sea salt caramel swirl (like a turtle dove - very sweet - I'd prefer less sugar) 4.5/5 STARLING SWEET POTATO BUCKWHEAT CRUMBLE By Dan Barber - ROW 7, New York Starling sweet potato ice cream, sweet potato miso swirl, sprouted buckwheat Florentine crumble (novel color and flavor) SERVICE With the help of staff over the phone, I was able to snag a pint of the Hong Kong milk tea. Let's just start off with ambience, love the sign out front, saying the flavors and special flavors. Was walking by the night before and there was a line out the door. The next night I went the line wasn't too bad, interior ambience was lacking, but the flavor of the vanilla apple custard tart was amazing. Loved the little chunks of apples. Of course how to get it in a waffle cone, their waffle presses are right behind the ice cream. Five out of five for flavor.

This place has such unique flavors and I love that they encourage sampling. It is a little expensive for what you get, but it's still good. I went with the seasonal wildflower honey and lemon chess pie which was bright and acidic and the chess pie added such a nice texture. My sister-in-law got the coffee with love nuts, but unfortunately there weren't many nuts so she was a little disappointed. Service was very friendly and allowed us to try all the flavors we wanted.

I really like the cinnamon snickerdoodle. I also tasted the birthday cake blackberry, it was delicious. The staff was nice, chill vibe inside, with a shady spot to sit outside. i will come again.

Addictive, creamy and rich-tasting ice cream. I also like that you can get it in a cup, cone or waffle cone. Staff were nice and helpful. The ambiance is cozy and fast moving with few seatings inside. A must try when you're in Little Italy, San Diego!

Ya'll! This is a must after every meal. This place is soooo good and definitely hit the spot. Don't mind the long line, it was worth it. We went to two gelato places that didn't work out for us. Soooo glad we found ice cream instead!! They had some interesting flavors and we were offered to sample all the flavors. Of course I'm the foodie of the group and had to try all the flavors and order the wildest flavor. This is definitely a need every time I come back to San Diego. Oh and I cannot forget about the amazing customer service they all provided!!! Everything was perfect and perfect ending to my evening on my vacation.

I love this place!!! Try the Salted, malted, chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. I have gone to 4 locations and they are all great. This shop is a little small, but still good ice cream. You must get a waffle cone.

Me and my husband both got the malted chocolate chip cookie and IT WAS PHENOMENAL omg, only regret is not getting it one more time before I left. So very good. The smell in this cute little place alone is enough to draw you in but I can't wait to have this ice cream again. It looked busy when we walked by but they get you in and out very quick

Service was great... Line was long but moved super quick. Very organized inside and servers weren't rushing and took their time to make sure you tried the flavors you wanted before making a selection. They used small metal spoons for samples, which i thought was cool and not wasteful. Their flavors are unique and were hit or miss for me. They had a ton of vegan options that are coconut based and a few really funky flavors like Turkey Stuffing and Cranberry Sauce. In the heart of Little Italy so parking is always bad. Overall prices were high but reasonable given the located. There was no indoor or outdoor seating that I could recall. They had a cooler with Pints of ice-cream to-go and a merch stand.

Ask the Community - Salt & Straw

How often do the specialty flavors change?

Our flavors change just about once a month. We've had a slightly adjusted schedule for the past year, but will resume monthly flavors starting with our upcoming launch on 9/24 of our Halloween Ice SCREAM! Series.

    Is it open now?

It was open for pick up when I went a couple weeks ago... not sure if you can walk in now.

On what day of the month do they change the menu?

Are there vegan options and how long is usually the wait when it's busy?

They always have one vegan option and lines can be long, however go during off times and shouldn't be too bad.

How is the wait during the weekdays in the afternoon?

I've been there twice around 1 and no line. But there may be more tourists and kids in the summer.

What kind of milk is used for the vegan flavors ??

I know some of them use coconut

We used to come visit here when we come to San Diego. On this summer day - the restaurant doesn't bave any AC on so it made it a bit uncomfortable to enjoy our desert when it is a bit cooler to sit outside. The other thing that got to me was that the men's restroom was out of service so they did not announce it or anything but the women's bathroom was to be used by both genders but it was crowded so a bit uncomfortable. Service wise we got our deserts and the deserts are still very delicious. We were a larger party and they were able to accommodate and get all of our orders correctly. Noise level was normal and gave us time to sit down and relax our feet. Over all - food was good but things were a bit worn down from a building perspective

It was a warm day but we got there at 5:15pm and the sun was starting to go behind the downtown buildings. Negative: service. It seems if you are a regular, like the two tables near us, they chat it up and talk about how things are. If you aren't a regular, they just quickly come by and say "anything else?" the two times they came by. Im a huge water drinker so the carafe they brought only refilled our cups once. Never got another one until we were done and they came by asking about dessert. They weren't busy by any stretch on a Tuesday evening but apparently the frequent customers either tip really well or they prefer familiar faces. I assume the latter. So, I mean the food itself was great but service was not good. I mean we went when it was slow too and the host was talking it up with a frequent customer also asking about the changes recently to parking in their area nearby....
