Fantastic birthday celebration at our favorite place to come for our ladies who lunch and pray. We've been coming here for lunch for five years and it's always five stars. The service is perfect. The food is consistently delicious and fresh and reasonably priced and a great quantity. It's always quiet And peaceful and clean and light. I get the yoga bowl every time because it's so wonderful and the birthday girl always gets the neat loaf with a mashed potatoes and a slice of bread. Another friend always gets the red beet hummus burrito and takes half home for leftovers. They also have a wonderful outdoor patio and plenty of indoor seating as well. I've never seen them have to turn anyone away or any wait. This place is like a hidden gem and I don't know why more people don't flock to this place. Let me say, I'm not a vegetarian but this place is wonderful. I had the chili and cornbread and it was delicious. It was flavorful and mild on heat. I'm sure if you wanted more heat they could add some. My friend had the peanut coconut daily soup and that was tasty as well. I ordered the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and it was very good. But the star was the apple pie, it was like eating my grandma's. The crust was thin and flaky, the apples sliced and spiced just right, not overly sweet with a little tartness and baked to perfection. I'll say the neighbor table ordered the Japcee (sp?) looked amazing. I can say, I would gladly go back to try other dishes. The service was excellent and attentive. The ambiance is calming. We found this place completely by accident, even though it's on a very busy corner. We ordered the lentils, a house salad with their homemade tahini dressing, the neatloaf, a burger, and of course, carrot cake. The neatloaf and burger both came with mashed potatoes and this lovely vegan/vegetarian gravy that was so dang good. The burger was house made too, not an Impossible patty, just actual vegetables lovingly held together into a delicious burger. Everything was fresh, hearty, and satisfying, but the real star of the show was the carrot cake. That carrot cake was ridiculously good. Moist, hearty, gluten free, and covered with a thick layer of cream cheese frosting. The balance was perfect. Rich without being overly sweet. It honestly reminded me of the carrot cake my Nana used to make, which made it feel extra special. The service was great too. Even after the place got busy, the staff stayed attentive and friendly. The ambiance was super chill, making it the kind of spot where you can actually relax and enjoy your meal without feeling rushed. My friend and I decided to come here as neither us had been here for quite a few years as we don't generally go to this area. Besides, it's a very healthy alternative and jf you are looking for a vegetarian or vegan eatery this is a good place. It was inspired by the creative and spiritual leader Sri Chimoy. His purpose was for world peace including a lot of beautiful paintings thar are well known all over the world, given to charities and for sale. If you're not familiar with him check him out. We arrived around 12:30 and it was virtually empty which was nice and quiet. This is a very small restaurant and always clean. We decided to have real cheese and not vegan with our meal and sat a nice table by the window where it was warm. My friend ordered the chips, salsa, chili and corn bread. She enjoyed it and ordered the Nirvana tea and I had a delicious pineapple, banana, mango smoothie. I enjoyed my portobello quesadilla and a mild flavorful salsa. ($18.00 for mine) We were waited by a very nice woman who gave us very good service. This restaurant opened in 1986 and at that time good luck finding anything healthy to eat. Was looking for a vegetarian/vegan place while visiting and found this little treasure on Yelp! The restaurant is similar to one we have up in San Francisco, and both were inspired by the works of Sri Chinmoy, and based on that alone I was committed to a meal here while visiting in San Diego. I got here about 4pm, and it was busy both inside and in the outdoor seating patio which ran the sidewalk on the side of the building, but there were plenty of seats. This place is light and airy, and nicely decorated in light blue and white, very relaxing. The tables and chairs are set with flowers and tablecloths, a homey touch as well. The server greeted me, and provided me with a menu and place setting. I had an idea of what I wanted (based on the menu in San Francisco) but one menu offering caught my eye: the Reuben sandwich. Mind you, this place has a great menu, offering appetizers, soups and curries, salads, entrees, wraps and side orders - and of course, dessert! So, I thought I had planned well enough ahead, but then I saw the Reuben. I was going to go with the Neatloaf (very popular up in SF and apparently here, and a go-to for me) but I had not seen the Reuben before, and so now I am conflicted. But only for 2 seconds, and I ordered the Reuben - something new here to me has got to be tried! I also ordered a small Pesto Quesadilla (whole wheat tortilla filled with jack cheese, tomato and fresh house made pesto sauce. Served with a side of fresh salsa, refried beans and scallions). Sounded yummy as well. I also ordered an iced Chai Tea (house made blend) and for $1 extra you get a refill. I ordered mine traditionally, with black tea and milk, but they also have a vegan option. The Chai Tea came quickly, and I settled in with anticipation for lunch. It was a neat blend, not that Starbucks kind, but tasty with spices and light. I enjoyed looking around from my table as I waited - lots of photos (next to me was a display of photos taken when Sri Chinmoy met Mother Teresa of Calcutta) and lots of artwork throughout. The food came out appetizer first, and I could smell the pesto from it! I love pesto, and I had to peek under the hood to see what it was looking like - and found lots of pesto, gooey cheese and tomatoes. So yummy to just look at, but the flavor was better. The whole wheat tortilla was good, and all together I made quick work of it. The Reuben came just as I was finishing, and it was a beautiful sight! The bread was grilled golden brown, the sides were gushing with fillings and the little volcano of mashed potatoes next to it completed the arrival. But, the surprise was when I took that first bite - it was an OMG moment I rarely have with food. I enjoy food, and good food I enjoy more so, but this was amazing! The bite was filled with a tectonic mélange of textures, flavors and aftershocks. The bread was indeed grilled crispy, and the sauerkraut and onions mixed their tang with the sweet mellowness of the dressing - which was plentiful! I was worried because I had not asked for extra, but there was no need in this case. It was almost too much, and I quickly needed a second and third napkin as I worked my way through it. The tempeh was very hot still, and I had to pace myself to let the next bite cool a bit - and the cheese was also melty and stringy. Perfect. The mashed potatoes were good, too, but for me a bit dry. I should have asked for extra gravy, but I used the gravy I had and didn't finish them all in any case as the quesadilla and Reuben seemed to fill me up nicely. I left no room for dessert, but had to get a slice of apple pie (Granny Smith apples sweetened with vegan sucanat in an organic whole wheat crust) to go. Again, torn between two good choices: that, and the carrot cake. Apples won. The pie slice arrived in a large tin with cover. Teasing, yet sure to get it home safely to the hotel. As a follow-up, I did have half of the slice that night and the rest for breakfast - don't judge! It was fresh, and the pie was not too sweet - I guess other commercial bakeries use more sugar than I imagine! And the crust was light and tasty. A wonderful treat. Overall, a wonderful meal! The Reuben was beyond expectations on so many levels. The quesadilla and apple pie just confirmed my enjoyment. The service was good, and although I do not know his name, I appreciate his professionalism - he was a little quiet, but can't hold that against the quality of his service provided. I am looking forward to returning someday - until then, maybe I can talk the SF folks into adding a Reuben to their offerings! Sooooo good! read more
