I'm not entirely sure how to write this review. I think everyone here is very well-intentioned and…read moreI don't want to speak negatively about a business the owners are clearly extremely passionate about so please know this is purely describing my experience. Let me start with this: Pane E Vino has the unique distinction of being the first restaurant in thirty-four years to have a waitress who made me cry. I don't think this was her intention, but I wasn't expecting to get shamed (roasted? Aggressively judged?) for my choice of wine. Listen, I have my reasons. I could only have one glass of wine, and I wanted it to be one I liked. But when I ordered a glass of their Pinot grigio, the waitress made a disgusted face and was pretty forceful in suggesting something else. She said the Pinot grigio was not good. Scrunched her face and shook her head. I stammered for a bit and reluctantly agreed to a different wine. When I tried it, it was not what I wanted or liked, and I was embarrassed to have been called out so aggressively and wasted my one glass, so I went to go cry in their restroom (which was very clean, +1.) When I returned, a glass of the Pinot grigio was at my seat because my husband is an angel who can read the room. Our server did not ask how I liked the replacement, but didn't charge for the forced glass, so eh. Okay. I reset my mood in preparation to receive our steak, octopus, and mussels. This seems to be a place where there ARE right and wrong orders. The chef asked how we wanted our steak and we said medium rare. Personally, I like more medium, my husband prefers rare. We compromise like pros. The chef seemed to prefer the "rare" temp so our steak came out nearly raw. My husband said it was the perfect steak, so if this was his review, you may be hearing a different story. But friends, I'll attach a picture. There is no land where that steak was cooked to the temp we asked for. I ate three of the shrimp from the top, which were fine (my husband said "a little chewy.") The octopus was good, but certainly a sharing portion, so not very much. Don't count on it to be a meal, but that's implied. The mussels were well flavored, but quite crunchy. We agreed that they were not rinsed out properly or something-- they had a ton of grit and some significant little pearl-like chunks in them. At this point we were just wanting to leave, so we didn't mention it. In summary, I cried, my husband liked the steak, and we went straight from here to somewhere else to get me some dinner.

This is not a place you would walk in off the beach to. The owner has her hands in everything from creating the weekly menu to waiting tables herself. She is a lovely woman, very direct but also very excited to share her process and her culture. The plates are small, but pack a punch. My husband and I shared a starter, two first course dishes, a single second course dish, and two desserts. We were satisfied, but certainly could have ate more because the food was amazing! My favorite was the burrata appetizer. The combination of flavors in this was unreal. Balsamic with some sort of pesto tasting tomato sauce and local sun dried tomatoes? I don't even know but I'll remember it forever. The creamy risotto we ordered combined flavors of leeks, fennel, and an amazing sausage that was hidden in there somewhere. My husband commented that the scallops we had in our second course were the best of his life, absolutely perfectly seared and the owner kindly told us how she did them. The arugula was huge and definitely local as I've never seen arugula like this in the grocery store. It was topped with a blueberry vinaigrette the owner made that was out of this world. The food brought us back to our time in Italy and we spent dinner talking about that trip. It really brought us back! Don't miss this charming little place while you're in town if you can swing it.

When we asked for check so that we could leave and explained why owner became irate and very unprofessional. Cafe tries to be upscale but falls short ... paper napkins, cheap uncomfortable furnishings, including metal chairs and small two top tables being utilized for four top, plastic placemats akin to shelf liner are all less than impressive coupled with long delay in service of even appetizers and salads makes for an overall miserable experience certainly not worth the trouble to make a reservation or the overpriced food. We left and went two blocks down the street for an upscale bistro experience in an intimate setting with cushy booths, perfect lighting and gourmet food cooked to perfection coupled with attentive service and impeccable manners.

You can grab a sandwich (lots of great options) and their house dressing alone is worth the stop. Seriously delicious. But the real fun is the cheese counter. You can build your own cheese board, browse all their incredible cheeses and charcuterie options, and then... here's the best part... Take everything downstairs to the cellar, order a glass (or bottle) of wine, and just enjoy. No rush. No fuss. Just good food, good wine, and a great atmosphere. It's one of those spots that feels like an experience, not just a meal. Fun, relaxed, and so, so yum. If you're in Colonial Williamsburg, don't skip this one. Grab cheese, grab wine, and settle in -- you'll be glad you did.

We didn't get a chance to try anything since it was close to closing time, but I can definitely see this place getting super busy on the weekends.

I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon after church and ordered the chicken salad sandwich (Freemason). Fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I was craving. When the weather's nice, I always try to grab a seat on the patio. It's such a relaxing spot to enjoy a good meal and soak up a little sunshine. Also, I have to shout out their potato salad is one of the best around. Creamy, just the right amount of seasoning, and always hits the spot. Based on visits over the past 5 years, which have been spaced further and further apart, I was hesitant. And my hesitancy proved to have been warranted. Husband's Northender on Multi grain My Princess Anne also on multi grain. Bread was so dry and stale that I simply struggled to eat the filling. The tomatoes were that hard, white inner core that most people would not feature on a sandwich. Finally in frustration I walked up and asked for a slice of baguette, which was the main meal's only redemption. Let's not even talk about what has become barely a step up from snack pack desserts. Both my (Bakehouse--oh my gosh, are they kidding?) gold brownie and my husband's blueberry mishmash had one bite from them before they too went straight into the trash. (Both tasted more of chemical, than of food) Sadly, what used to be one of our favorite weekly visits pre-Covid, has become less than lackluster, and far from its name. Rather it should be renamed yet again, from the original, Taste Unlimited, to Taste and now should be called, Tasteless. For the price of $50, one would think the meal would at least be edible. Hopefully this review will help me remember why we stopped going. Definitely do not recommend.
