Firsrvtime time at Taste Newport News. The location is Oyster Point. Parking is my only negative, but honestly there is a lot around if willing to walk a block, or two. Love the big openness of the store. Grab and go is up front and that's what I needed for a drink. Tried a new Watermelon variety from Harney & Sons that was darn good. Service was top notch. They had discount wine up front but the counter. A wall of wine for purchase is in the rear. Other grab and go refrigerated items like soup, cakes and ice cream. There is a decent amount of seating for those dining in. Recommend! read more

What more is there to say about Taste that hasn't already been said? Honestly--not much... except that it continues to be that place I keep coming back to. I'm there often, usually for the fresh bread (dangerously good) and the house sauce (I'd happily buy it by the gallon if that were an option). And the sodas are unique. The chicken pot pie soup deserves its own fan club--comforting, rich, and exactly what you want on a chilly day. The location is another win, especially if you enjoy being in City Center and soaking up that lively-but-not-chaotic vibe. Over the years, I've loved so many of the monthly Peter's Picks--though I'll admit I'm always a little heartbroken when my favorites don't make it onto the regular menu. A small tragedy, but one I'm willing to endure. If I could change one thing it would be to have more kids meal options. I've lived in Newport News for over 20 years, and for the last 10 of them, Taste has been a regular spot for our family. That kind of longevity says more than any review ever could. Reliable, delicious, and always worth the visit--Taste has truly earned its name. read more

It has been a long minute since I ordered food from Taste. Sophia and I didn't know what to eat for lunch so I mentioned these guys, which have been reliable for us. Let's see if they continued the streak. Just like previous times, we both placed orders via their website. For my order, I selected their chicken ceasar wrap which comes in a whole whear wrap and I added crotons along with their regular ingredients. I also ordered a S'mores Blondie dessert which was one of their seasonal items. When I walked in, the place was nearly packed with customers either dining in or waiting for their order. Ours was ready for pickup even before the 1pm pickup time. Bravo to them!! As far as the food goes, it was very good. The wrap was full of protein and veggies and like before, made yours truly full for lunch. Their dessert was really good and not too sweet the more I ate. When I lived in Newport News, I used to love coming here for lunch. And now anytime I'm back in the area, I make sure to stop in! I always go for the Northender, with house dressing instead of the basil mayo! My husband likes the hill top. Their bread is the best part. They also have the best ice! The crushed ice, not huge cubes. I always grab a bottle of house dressing to up my sandwiches at home as well. They do take a little time to get your sandwich to you, so I recommend ordering ahead of time. read more

A very chill place to stop but and grab a quick bite. They sell Virginia based foods like peanuts, wines, and cheeses which were cool. A nice place to stop by if you want a taste of Virginia. The crab soup was very full of crab- crab in every bite. I wasn't a huge fan because of the old bay but it was good and my partner loved it. It also comes with either a French or multigrain bread. The Virginia sandwich was really good and had a good amount of filling in it. Overall a good place to stop but a tiny bit pricey for the size of the food. read more

I stopped by here for a quick, yummy lunch! It was very loud, from the music to the chatter, due to the tall walls making all sounds echo. I ordered a Northender sandwich with no bacon and it was delicious! The French bread was soft and flavorful, the smoked turkey was generously portioned, and the house dressing was a creamy mayo. For the sandwich and a small drink, I paid $19.26, $2 of that was just city tax. Not a bad price considering the value of the food! read more

This is the kind of place I love... in theory, but it didn't quite live up to the expectations. First, the good... Ambiance. Location. Both are great. It's large and open and thoughtfully branded. They have different "stations" of items for sale--wine, pre-packaged foods, merchandise. I love yellow, and that's their primary design color. Not so great was the food. Which is why you'd be there in the first place, right? I got the goat cheese salad, and while there was a nice hunk of goat cheese in it, the salad was dry as heck. I'd prefer like a raspberry vinaigrette to a balsamic for this, as well. But that's not the customer's choice to make. The bread was the really old school multigrain hard kind, which was delicious with butter. Presentation is nice, including the signature yellow and white striped bags. Service was okay, but slow. I'd have to try other items to make a firm decision about this spot, but first visit is just okay. read more

I had a hair appt next door, and I was starving after. I have never been to taste although I have been near one every home I owned. I decided to try their apricot tea and their curry chicken salad wrap...it was delicious, and refreshing! It was nice to have something that wasn't greasy. I visited Taste in Virginia Beach, didn't realize we had one here in Newport News in City Center. Doesn't have the outside space of Virginia Beach but inside and menu appear the same Ordered a seasonal salad Summer Farmstand Salad Quite a good salad the asparagus was a bit reedy though, the dressing was quite nice and the burrata cheese and peaches were great. I order from TASTE either for pickup or for in-store dining a lot when I am in the area. However, I was very disappointed this time around. I ordered the Inlet sandwich (mozzarella and tomato on ciabatta with a basil mayo and balsamic vinaigrette) with the prosciutto as an add on for pickup, and it was not very good. This is the sandwich I usually get, so I know what it tastes like normally. This time around, it tasted super dry, like there was no mayo in it, and I feel like the sandwich was not filled as much as it usually is. I also ordered the Pretzapalooza Brownie, and it was very good. The brownie was very fudgy, and I loved the added texture of the pretzels, and the caramel went nicely with it. It is my go-to dessert when I go to TASTE. I have been to this TASTE location before and it has been overall good in the past (although variations in quality are common), which is why I gave this place three stars instead of something lower. I would come back here again, but I hope that it will be better next time around. read more

The greatest culinary mystery of Hampton Roads is how Taste makes their multi-grain bread taste so good! Plenty of crunchy crust, pillowy soft interior, thick enough to where it holds up the sandwich ingredients, but not too thick to where it overwhelms the other ingredients. My go to's are the Beach Club (roast beef instead of ham) and the Northender (Swiss cheese instead of Havarti and house dressing instead of basil mayo). Don't skip on the house or hot house dressings. The bottles aren't cheap, but it's the chef's kiss to these sandwiches. And major props for having Dr Brown's soda and Route 11 chips! Parking is usually a challenge, so if you get a spot on the street, count your blessings. Plenty of seating and there's also a lot of grab and go options as well. read more

This was a nice gem that we stumbled upon walking around City Center. We were looking for a lunch spot near our hotel and came to Taste. At first glance it looks like an upscale hipster sandwich spot. I really liked the vibes in this location. I ordered the Beach Club sandwich. The staff gave me a free coffee when I asked if they served any drinks with caffeine. That was very nice of them. There are several tables inside to sit and enjoy your meal. Many families started coming in during the afternoon and it got packed quickly. The food was very good. The sandwich had a lot of meat on it and was very flavorful. The coffee was decent but it did the trick. I noticed they have several different types of sodas available for purchase. There is a tiny market place which served different artisanal drinks and snacks for purchase. This seems like a cool place to come by and check out the local options. It is a short walk from our hotel so we can come back here and pick up some things later on. read more

I tried out TASTE today with my sister and friend. It was fantastic! My niece was telling me about the Lynnhaven with the chicken, pimento cheese, basil mayo....etc. so I got it. Man that was a great sandwich! All the flavors worked so well together. I ate half the way it came and saved the other half for later. I heated it up in the microwave for about 30seconds and it was cheesy, warm, and delicious. So good. The store was cute too, with drinks, take away food, little to go bento boxes, even wine. I wish I lived closer so I could pick up a quick dinner id only have to throw in the oven. The service was okay. I didn't really need help with the menu and you go to the front and order. So it's a normal fast casual restaurant. I'll definitely return! read more

There were other choice drinks in front of store in a fridge section. There were many choices of wine in the back of store. There were also other choices of snacks on display as well. I've finally thought of the word that I have been looking for to describe Taste: pretentious. I feel like they WANT to be a hip, trendy sandwich shop, but end up more like a Cracker Barrel for hipsters, what with all of the overpriced market goods that take up 1/3 of the floor space. We stopped at TASTE while on a road trip. We had ordered ahead and the food was waiting in a clearly marked pickup area. We had the Thai wrap, spiced chickpea salad, Thai pasta salad, and the Virginian. The two sides were sooo good. The thai pasta salad was flavorful and the veggies were crisp. I wish I took pictures, but I do remember getting Nana's chicken or something like that, it was good but a little too salty. The server was very down to earth, and she was patient. On my lunch break and the workers have no sense of urgency just kind of lollygagging around and messing around in the back. The one guy has quite long hair, it was tied back in a ponytail, but that was it made me kinda nervous. I watched them take somebody's garbage and bring it behind the counter where food was being prepared, empty the tray and then put the tray that somebody had just gave them and they just emptied the garbage on the table where they prepare food and didn't wash it no nothing so kind of grossed me out. Solid sandwiches and hip vibes! I got the Princess Anne sandwich and really enjoyed the avocado, roasted red peppers, and havarti cheese smothered in their roasted red pepper aioli sauce. I really liked the atmosphere/vibes from this place! They have a nice little store area with organic snacks and products, separate wine area, and other cute fancy beverages like CBD-infused tea or canned matcha latte with oak milk. When we rolled into Newport News wifey and I were ravenous. Wifey found this place on Yelp and though I'm not normally a big sandwich guy (especially now that I'm supposed to be on a gluten-free diet) I was willing to cheat. The options here are phenomenal as you can either have one of their special sandwiches or you can build your own. They also offer wraps, salads and boxed lunches. This place has some incredible drink choices and they also sell a bunch of knick knacks and Virginia nuts. Wifey ordered the Chimichurri Steak sandwich (grilled flank steak avocado , jalapeños, and chimichurri on an Italian baguette) and I had The Virginian (prosciutto, turkey, baked ham, provolone, romaine lettuce, banana peppers, balsamic vinaigrette on a ciabatta bread). We also split a Sprecher lo-cal root beer. Though I liked my sandwich better, Wifey's was also very good...just too spicy with the jalapeños. We ended up splitting our sandwiches and while I didn't think it would fill us up the sandwiches were plenty. Loved this place, loved the sandwiches, loved the drink options and loved that I could pick up Virginia peanuts here. If I'm ever back in Newport News I'd eat here again for sure. read more

I had one cocktail - I believe it was called Watermelon Sugar. It had vodka, aperol and fresh watermelon. Refreshing and smooth. I tried two apps: the fried oysters and the bao buns. Both were fantastic. Perfectly prepared, so much flavor. I think that next time, I would stick to the appetizer section and try many rather than getting an entree. I got the scallops, which were delicious, but the apps wow-ed me more. Prices aren't low, but you get what you pay for - really high quality dishes with lots of thought and execution embedded. You can truly tell that a lot of care and creativity goes into the menu. The service made the experience even better. Most of the seating is outdoors in the "front yard" with picnic tables and high top bench seating. The yard is fenced, making it a wonderful option for families with children. We went on a very busy Friday evening and had to wait about 40 minutes for a table to free up for our group of 12 (6 adults, 6 kids). It was no problem waiting because we just got a few drinks (the wine slushies are so good!) and let the kids play and color. The vibe was really like a back yard hang out, and the clientele is very relaxed and friendly. This isn't pretentious brew pub. Their wine room is lined with bottles to purchase and enjoy there or take home. There are two large coolers with many different craft beers, and they do have a few craft options on draft. For the non-alcohol crowd they have a great selection of NA beers and wines, and sodas as well. They even have juice boxes for the kids! The dining area was roomy and bright with plenty of windows to allow sunshine to flow. Many of the table had solos on lap tops. My coffee order was called out quickly and was gorgeous! Around 10 minutes later my toast was pushed out. The coffee was as good as it looked. The toast was just ok. The avocado was spread extremely thin. I hope to return on another Newport News trip.
