Meh. Line was crazy and to be honest I don't get it. Got the lemon blueberry ricotta and Italian sweet cream. Lemon tasted fake to me and the sweet cream left a weird taste on my tongue. My bride got the twisted something...she said it was 3 out of 5 stars. You live and learn. Yes, I'm an ice cream snob. Maybe it's because it's in a town that thrives on tourism. I don't know, but it just wasn't very good. I had really high hopes just because of the line. If I'm ever back I'll skip this place.

Had a chance to get Brown Dog Ice Cream right before closing time. I had just watched the sunset at Cape Charles Beach. I wanted yo try this place since it had rave reviews. The line was almost out the door for almost being end of the day. This mom and pop place was super cute and their story of their brown lab. You can even find a brown lab statue out front. All the ice cream sizes have cute dog names. For a second I thought I was about to order a dog ice cream. I did the 1 scoop cup and wow was it huge. The workers let me try the flavors I was debating between. I went with the banana pudding ice cream. It resembled banana pudding so well, but in ice cream. Great job! Until next time Brown Dog Ice Cream because I'll be back for another 1 scoop cup of that banana pudding ice cream in a future visit.

There's not a whole lot of late night happenings in Cape Charles; however, there are a few ice cream spots that are open after the sun goes down. Out of the ones my friends and I saw, Brown Dog by far had the longest line, so we had to follow the crowd and hop in line to see what the fuss was about. The line moves pretty quickly, and once you're inside, you'll see all the different flavors they have while taking in all the cute dog themed interior. They're pretty efficient, I didn't think that they'd let us sample flavors because they were so busy, but the staff insisted when I said it was my first time. That was so nice of them. After sampling a couple of flavors, I ultimately decided on the Lemon Streussel. It was so good and creamy, and the struessel crumble pieces really set it off. All in all, Brown Dog Ice Cream was one of the best parts of my weekend trip to Cape Charles.

Brown dog Ice Cream in Cape Charles is a must visit for anybody with a sweet tooth and a love for all things local! Homemade unique flavors that are made in small batches using fresh ingredients. Every single one that we had was so good. I don't even know how my lemon poppyseed pound cake was so good. It was not too sweet and the pound cake wasn't frozen it gelt like it was freshly wrapped into the ice cream. Amazing The service is great and I was torn between two flavors and the hands down told me which one was their favorite. And I agree. I'm so glad I listened. Do expect lines. It's summertime and obviously everybody knows how good this is

Brown Dog is a classic ice cream shop serving the downtown and beach crowds. They had 12 flavors when we visited. There are three tables, nine seats total inside and some cushions at the bay windows. The servers have been trained well. They are courteous, friendly and efficient.

Omfg. Number one. So cute. The service is fast & friendly even though it seems like they stay absolutely packed. The ice cream is to die for. I'd go back every day if I could. Love love loved it!

So glad we made it to Brown Dog Ice cream on our day trip to Cape Charles! I love me some ice cream! I was sad to see they sold out of their chocolate chip cherry pints because it sounded fantastic. Due to the pandemic, you can only order at the window front and take your ice cream to go. We initially were the only ones there. But no sooner than we started sampling a few of their flavors did a crowd of people start to line up out of nowhere! I chose the vanilla salted caramel brownie and the Banana pudding in a waffle cone. The scoops are a good size! The ice cream is so creamy and soft! From the ice cream down to the waffle cone, fully satiated my sweet tooth! I truly enjoy patronizing small local ice cream shops for their unique flavors and who can resist the cute logo and reason the ice cream shop is named after ( the owner's very own brown dog)! *They have limited hours. Check out their Instagram for updates. I think currently they are now on fall hours which they are only open Saturdays and Sundays 12pm-7pm.

So good! I like their unique flavors but they still have the classics. The staff was friendly.

Butterscotch with chocolate chunks was delicious!!

Brown Dog Ice Cream was the highlight of my recent trip to Cape Charles. I had a single scoop and ended up wishing that I tried the four flavors that I was struggling to choose from. I ended up choosing their butterscotch flavor with chocolate chunks. I could taste the freshness and quality, nothing artificial about it. Very refreshing on a hot day. My daughters selected cookies and cream and found some substantial cookie pieces. I got to finish some and thought it was also excellent. If you're in Cape Charles, you need to have Brown Dog Ice Cream!

The decor was so cute The shop is small, you can eat inside, but I am sure it does become crowded. There is a bench outside the shop. There is the cutest cow bench as well inside. When we walked in we order quick. I got a strawberry milkshake to try and share, the reeses pieces ice cream and at the last minute I noticed "wooder" ice! Good ol Philadelphia treat. I highly recommend getting the water ice, I enjoyed the cotton candy flavor. They did have cherry,, and mango flavors as well. Not that reeses flavor was sooooo good. It had great peanut butter flavor with a few reeses pieces to enjoy. The strawberry shake had chunks of strawberries in it and the cup was laced with strawberry syrup/sauce. The two employees working when I was there were a lot of fun. They helped guide us on their flavors. They put in a lot of effort to make my strawberry shake look and taste yummy.

When we came last year, it seemed like they were having an off night. We came today, however, and this will be our last visit. Our bill was over 100 (2 adults and 1 child, water to drink), and had the most disappointing food ever. Everything was incredibly bland, to the point of almost inedible. We began with a half-dozen order of oysters, which had very little meat. Even more frustrating was how they were served - they were full of shells mixed into the meat and dry (all the water had been dumped out), which meant that the people shucking did not know how to properly shuck an oyster. The crunch of the shells also made for an unpleasant eating experience. The lobster rolls had absolutely no flavor. I have never not finished a lobster roll in my life, but about halfway through I just gave up. We wanted to order crab cakes, but they were out (note that they've been out on our last several visits - this time we were there right when they opened, so they could not have run out). The children's chicken tenders appeared to have come straight out of the freezer. The Caesar salad was tasteless. I ordered the local vegetables and was given the option of Brussel sprouts or broccolini (these have been the options every time I've visited no matter the season). I was disappointed, since there is great produce on the Eastern Shore in the middle of July, none of which includes the fall/spring produce of Brussel Sprouts or Broccolini. The Broccolini wasn't cooked, but appeared to have been warmed while doused in olive oil (but no salt or other seasonings). The middle was still cold. We saw our server only a few times when she took our order and dropped off our food. Someone else dropped off the oysters, and dropped the oyster fork on the floor. She picked it up, apologized, and promised to return but we never saw her again so had to eat the oysters with the forks we had used for the caesar salad (not the best combination). The oysters weren't great to begin with, so it probably didn't make much difference. I'm disappointed in the Shanty, and disappointed at how much we spent on such a mediocre meal. I won't return.

While walking along Mason Avenue, I made reservations at The Shanty, and it turned out to be a great choice. The restaurant is just a short stroll from the main shopping area, down by the docks. You can park for free along Mason Avenue or drive directly to The Shanty, which has its own parking lot. One of the highlights was enjoying fresh seafood on the open-air porch with beautiful waterfront views. The atmosphere was relaxed, charming, and perfectly summery. They also had plenty of options for the kids, including mac and cheese and chicken fingers, so everyone was happy. I ordered the fish tacos, while my mom enjoyed the seafood chowder and a wedge salad. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we were hoping for after a day exploring Cape Charles. If you're visiting the area and looking for a casual waterfront meal with great seafood, a family-friendly menu, and a fun coastal vibe, The Shanty is definitely worth a visit.
