Never been to an ice cream shop that felt like an exclusive club. While visiting Cape Charles for the first time two weeks ago, I stopped by Brown Dog Ice Cream since I wanted a dessert following dinner and saw a lot of people walking down the street with their ice cream cones and they had solid reviews. The shop isn't brightly lit, it's on the dim side, and you need to walk to the back of the shop to start your order. I came towards the end of the day and it wasn't crowded--there was one other person in line--but despite this and the long walk to the end of the shop I wasn't greeted by any of the staff. When I got to the start of the order line I was the only one in it and I looked at the overhead menu for some plant-based ice cream (google stated that Brown Dog Ice Cream carries plant-based ice cream options), there was an employee standing there who saw me standing in line and search the menu but didn't greet me or ask if I was ready to order--then I made eye contact with her to make sure she saw me obviously standing there and she STILL said nothing to me. Fortunately, there was another employee who came over and acknowledged me and kindly asked how she could help me. I let her know I was looking on the menu for plant-based ice cream but hadn't seen it. She let me know that Brown Dog does serve plant-based ice cream options but only in the summer months. I thanked her for her help and walked out. Because of the cold-shoulder I received when walking in and from the first employee, I won't be coming back for the summer plant-based options. I hope management hosts a training with all of their staff on how to treat people that walk into their shop...you kindly greet people when they walk in and when they are next in line, you greet them and ask how you can help them. There's not a whole lot of late night happenings in Cape Charles; however, there are a few ice cream spots that are open after the sun goes down. Out of the ones my friends and I saw, Brown Dog by far had the longest line, so we had to follow the crowd and hop in line to see what the fuss was about. The line moves pretty quickly, and once you're inside, you'll see all the different flavors they have while taking in all the cute dog themed interior. They're pretty efficient, I didn't think that they'd let us sample flavors because they were so busy, but the staff insisted when I said it was my first time. That was so nice of them. After sampling a couple of flavors, I ultimately decided on the Lemon Streussel. It was so good and creamy, and the struessel crumble pieces really set it off. Every single one that we had was so good. I don't even know how my lemon poppyseed pound cake was so good. We've been here a couple of times now. The line is always out the door and moves in waves (thanks, all you people who order milkshakes....) Everything is always so solidly executed - the milk chocolate an vanilla are great, and their special flavors (though IGNORE what's on their website - I got myself so psyched about what was listed as their flavors of the day on their website only to find out that what was at the store was a completely different list) are SO GOOD. Their menu is in very small font so you can't read it until you get pretty close, which was hard for the older people I was with. My raspberry lemonade milkshake (I think that was the flavor), was refreshing on an extremely hot day. It's pretty sweet, so be prepared! My family loved their homemade ice creams. If you visit at a busy time, the line may be wrapped around down the street. Try to visit during an in-between time and you'll be all set! It's true what they're saying: this might be the best ice cream of your life. (I can't guarantee it's THE BEST but I can't think of anything better right now so... work with me.) We came in on a Saturday afternoon, and the line was about halfway through the store. The friendly staff work quickly though and we were ordering in no time! My husband got two scoops of strawberry on a waffle cone. I tried it, and it was the real deal classic strawberry that EVERY strawberry ice cream should dream to be. I couldn't pass up the idea of a waffle ice cream sandwich, because where else do you get that? I went with their famous ES Coastal Roasting Co coffee flavor. They make the waffle fresh to order, so it takes a few minutes, but it was 100% worth the wait. We paid and grabbed seats in the window just before the line swelled to fill the shop. They still moved it through very quickly! Great service. They brought the waffle ice cream sandwich out with a knife and a fork, and first thing was trying a bit of that ice cream I had heard so much about. HEAVENLY. A strong coffee flavor that really held it's own in the sweet and creamy ice cream. It only got better when paired with the waffle. This might actually have been one of the best waffles I've ever had aside from the ice cream combination. Waffles and ice cream really should be paired together more often. First experience was 100% tainted by a super rude, disrespectful young girl with hoop earrings that worked behind the counter. She should be fired from brown dog as she made the ice cream place a horrible experience. My family and I were excited to try brown dog for the first time as we have always gone to the competitors down the street. It's located on the Eastern Shore, in Cape Charles, on Mason Avenue, amongst all the other shops and restaurants in the area. There aren't many, so you definitely won't miss it. Customer service was excellent, from getting samples, ordering, paying, everything. THEIR ICE CREAM IS CREAMY, OH-SO-DELICIOUS, AND EVERY SPOONFUL WAS PERFECT! I chose their best selling ES Coffee flavor and the Banana Salted Caramel Chip flavors. AMAAAAZZZZING!!! I'll think of that ice cream eating experience forever. Their prices are so affordable too - (Prices as of 8/19/2019) Cones: 1 scoop - $2.95 2 scoops - $4.25 (A little bit more for waffle cones) Cups: 1 scoop - $2.95 2 scoops - $4.25 3 scoops - $5.55 4 scoops - $6.85 Waffle Ice Cream Sandwich - $6.75 Lil pup cone/cup - $2 They also serve some frosty libations and coffee, and for a little extra, you can add toppings to your ice cream as well.
