I love the drybar, and I will be back, but I think i'm going to let them work out some of these DC kinks and stick to the NYC locations when I go to visit. Note: This review was written back in December (Yelp account was only just confirmed this month). I booked a blow out at dry bar because I've heard great things about it. The space was really nice and I figured the price and time it would take was perfect. When I came in, I was waiting for a few minutes at the front before anyone acknowledged me. The receptionist was helping someone else, but she could have looked at me and said "I'll be with in a second" Another receptionist finally came over to check me in. He was friendly and asked if I wanted anything to drink. I requested a water, but that never came. I also waited an additional 10 minutes for my appointment, which normally I wouldn't mind, but its advertised as an in and out service. The shampoo I had was wonderful and although I can't remember her name, the woman who did my hair was very friendly. Her actual blow dry however was mediocre. I asked for a cosmo-tai, but very clearly was given a cosmo. It looked nice, but I have naturally curly hair so I didn't really want to pay for it to be curled. About 2 hours after I left it became very flat as well. It didn't look very styled and the ends looked messy. Before I went out, I fixed the style with my own flat iron and added more product for a shine that I didn't get when I left the salon. I should also add that overall, my shampoo and blow out took 50 min (not including the time waiting for my appointment and paying). That's how long it takes when I additionally get a cut. I'm not going to write off dry bar because I have heard great things from other locations and a few of the other reviews do say that its a bit hit or miss with the stylists. I do, however, think I'll wait a while before returning. I know it's a new location so I'm guessing they just need more time to adjust the kinks. read more

I had a great experience! I wanted to try something new and my stylist did a nice job. I would opt out of the bay breeze shot. I did not notice a difference. Great to watch Bridesmaid while he was working it. Would go again before an event. I did have to wash the next day, but I expected that. read more

I had an appointment scheduled for a blowout +bay breeze at 7am. I was not seated until about 7:40am. On top of that, I was not given the Bay Breeze treatment - yet still charged for it! They also did not provide me with an e-receipt as promised. Extremely dissatisfied. The only reason for the 2nd star is because the stylist (when one finally came) was extremely nice and I could tell she was concerned that no one had come to get me yet. THIS LOCATION IS A HIT OR MISS (MORE A MISS THAN ANYTHING) I had a horrible experience and I know DryBar is big on customer service but my last visit was anything but accommodating customer service. I normally try to come to dry bar consistently because I love the atmosphere and the experience I receive from the salon. But after my last experience, I am seriously reconsidering never coming to Drybar again (until I went to Bethesda) my appointment started on time. I always note that I need someone who is used to handling thick, coarse hair because that what I have and if you are not used to it, it can be a lot. Lately, (my last three visits) I feel as if every time I put a note in for my appointment the receptionist never reads it. I note what type of stylist I need and even request certain ones or request NOT to have certain ones but no matter what I feel like my notes are ignored and nothing is done to make my customer experience a touch more personable. Like my previous time at DryBar, I specifically asked not to have a certain stylist and the receptionist still gave me the same one I requested not to have.The whole reason I go to drybar is because it is like my best friend is doing my hair while watching movies and drinking yummy drinks but while I have that experience I fully expect the service Im paying for to be done throughly. When I went on thursday, Shelby did my hair. Now Shelby is a sweet girl. She could have been more engaging but she did her best. She made decent conversation but as soon as she started working on my hair I knew we would have a problem. In the washroom the receptionist must have felt bad because she was coaching her on how to wash my hair but it didn't get better. I felt like my scalp had barely been touched by her hands and still dirty.When we went to the styling chair, she started the blow drying process but after five minutes she literally started tugging my hair. My head was literally being yanked as she blow dried it, which left me with a pounding headache and terrible neck pain. I did ask her if she could lighten up at one point but that seemed to go on ignored. After the blow drying began the flat iron process started. I wanted a slight version of the cosmo but a lot looser curls. As soon as she begins to flat iron my hair I could tell this would be another problem. She barely touched my roots and her curl method left my hair lacking consistency of curl pattern and crease marks allover my hair. It was like she didn't know how to curl with a flat iron. Five minute later she drops the flat iron on me and say oh its okay. I didn't get burnt but I mean c'mon, can I at least get a "Im sorry"? At this point I was done. I understand I have a lot of hair and it takes time but honestly half way through my hair I felt as if she gave up. Another girl came to help her on one side and as usual she did a great job. So the whole time in my head I wishfully hope that she would continue my hair but she didn't. She only did her one side. The disappointing part was that the girl who helped Shelby, did my hair so well that one section of my hair was full and vibrant and the 3/4 of my hair shelby did was dead and had no curl and was really, really thick since she didn't get my roots. It was embarrassing!! I had to go home and redo my hair! Why should i go out of my way and pay for a service when I have to go home and redo it? Larissa (the manger I think) had left for the evening but at that point I was so mad that I just paid and left immediately. I do realize I have a lot of hair which is why every time (esp Meagan,love her!!) or someone that actually tries and does a good job on my hair I leave an extra twenty for them because I know its a lot. But with Thursday experience and the front desk not even attempting to read the notes on my appointment I am tempted to go to Blow bar on L street which is way closer, cheaper and will probably pay attention to my notes on my appointment and give me a stylist who will do a great job. The atmosphere is fun, the reception is friendly, and they offer complimentary drinks. I highly recommend my stylist Lateefah. I went this morning 8 am and I am leaving very happy! Andromedes (forgive my spelling) whipped my thick, curly, natural black hair into something laid and slayed! It was clear it would take longer than 45 minutes to do my hair but she was patient with me, had a very positive attitude and made sure that I left satisfied with her work product. I love that dry bar has stylists that's can do hair like mine because I've been to other blow dry bars where that has not been the case. My only suggestion is that they allot more time to women with long, thick and/or coarse hair so that other customers are not disappointed when their appointments start later and not on time. read more

I made an appointment for a blowout reluctantly, having read the reviews here. But given my experience at Drybar in LA and NY, and the fact that this Georgetown location has been open for a few months now, I decided to give them a try. I walked in early Sunday morning and found a fun, vibrant salon, already teeming with people. I liked the little cookies they have by the check-in desk. They offered me coffee, tea or I think juice. I sat down to wait for my stylist (Jasmine). She fetched me in less than 5 minutes. I told her I wanted straight hair with some loose curls at the ends. I got exactly what I asked for. It looked great! I should note that I had my doubts at the beginning, as she began drying and styling my hair from the top, instead of starting for the bottom layers. But then she seemed to get into a groove and began blow drying the bottom layers....using a round brush to style curls into the hair. I will definitely be going back. I hope they continue to train their stylists...it seems that was an issue with most reviewers here. If I are more consistency with this location, I may even buy one of their packages. I loooove Drybar! They offer you tea, coffee, champagne or wine the moment you step in and the space is simply beautiful! I will say that some stylists are better than others. After 3 visits, I've learned my lesson not to ask for anything beyond a basic blowout (straight with a little body). Twice, I asked for slightly beachy waves and both times, wound up looking like a curly finalist for Miss Alabama. From what I could see (another lesson learned: don't agree to sit in a chair without a mirror in front of you), the stylists don't understand the concept of those flipper-less curling irons, i.e. you have to hold out at least 1-2" of the ends of the hair so you get waves rather than curls. I don't know if it's just a problem with DC staff or Drybar's training (I use other blowdry options when in NY and LA) but judging by other reviewers' similar comments, I'm not alone. Pluses: --the staff has always been friendly and accommodating --the umbrella to take if it's raining is incredibly helpful --online booking is great --parking here was terrific, rarely possibly in Georgetown Minuses: --quickie, corner-cutting, uninspired shampoos --Doesn't seem to be any protocol for fixing problems. Each time at the outset I'd said "no curls" and at the end, when I said, "it's curly," the stylist just stood there, unsure what to do. And each time, the stylist did some half-hearted attempts at pulling out ringlets. Little improved and both times, I've left disappointed. This last visit, I went home and attacked my hair with my straightening iron. --Agree with many others: the $10 tip "recommendation" sign is tacky. I guarantee that 99% of Drybar's customers know how to tip and do it nicely...especially since the clientele is willing to spend money on something as ephemeral as blown-dry hair. --I might be in the minority on this point but chick flicks, seriously? Unfortunate stereotyping. Would I go back? I get my hair cut and colored in NY so I don't have a DC local salon. I'd still consider Drybar among other options if I wanted a professional blowout - and again, just a straight style - but it wouldn't have any particular edge over those others. read more

I am a frequent dry bar client and come here for all occupations. However, I was very disappointed by this location and the service. The first woman who was supposed to do my uptini said she wasn't going to take me because I was not getting my hair washed. 20 minutes later, the next girl saw the picture I wanted and said she could not do that. 30 minutes later I still sit here and wait while my friend was taken back to get an uptini and I still have not been helped. I was not even apologized to for the service and they did not even offer me a coffee or drink. I will not be coming back to this location. read more

Loved my 1st dry bar experience! Went on NYE around 1pm. I was very hesitant about my hair falling out before I made it out for the night but it was the only time available. They were a little behind due to the holiday but I was in and out in less than hour! I have long thick hair, I was shocked it took less than hour! My stylist was awesome! She found out exactly what I was looking for and styled my hair to make sure it made it through the night. Not only did it make it through all of NYE but it still looked good the next day! Lovely salon and great customer service, but I wasn't taken back for more than 15 minutes after my appointment time. I let the stylist know I was attending a formal event and wanted some real curl and not just beach waves and I also warned her that my hair doesn't hold curl well. She did a beautiful job blowing it out but by the time she finished the side she dried first had already fallen out. She kept working and tried a curling iron, but couldn't make it happen. There seemed to be an array of products at her disposal, but she didn't use much of anything and I think this meant the curls were destined to fail (before I even left!). She was really sweet, but I could've flipped my hair upside down, dried it and curled the ends myself and saved $40. read more

The curls did start to fall out after walking for a half hour, however my hair looks great and has nice waves. Also, my appointment was at 4 pm and I was out of there by 4:45 pm. I want to like Drybar, but my two visits have been disappointing. I went at 10am in Bethesda - I was a bit early, and my stylist was ready immediately, which was great. She did a great job shampooing, washing with cold water to close the cuticle, etc. The look, feel and friendliness of the salon is all excellent. The thing is, I don't think the stylists can go off the "book." I brought a photo from a website, and it was a very straight, smooth look with a small amount of wave at the ends. I have thick hair, and a lot of it, and I specifically asked for a sleek, straight look with no volume at the crown and a tiny amount of wave at the ends (I indicated Manhattan, since I got the vibe she was confused). What I got was a bouncy, voluminous look with tons of wave. Did it look nice? Sure, but it was specifically not what I asked for, with way too much volume. It's a bit awkward because I was at an end chair, so I couldn't see myself the whole time. She pulled out a curling iron after she was done drying and at that point I asked to see the mirror since I could tell it was too much curl already, so I asked for no iron. I know they want you to leave happy but it feels like a bit much to tell your stylist - well you did exactly what I didn't want, so can you start again? They do ask you when you check out, but again - at that point I felt pretty over it. I put my hair in a ponytail, and after work used a straightener to fix it. I totally understand that a lot of women want a voluminous, bouncy look - but that's exactly what I didn't want. read more

I had my engagement pictures yesterday on a record breaking hot April day (90 degrees!) and needed to know my hair was the last thing I would have to worry about. So I made an appointment at Drybar and asked for an experienced stylist for the special occasion. My appointment was with Megan who had gotten the comments I made in my reservation and knew it was a big day. After a few minutes chatting, she got exactly what I wanted. I went for the Mai Thai and it was PERFECT. It held on through the afternoon and several hours of humid DC temps. When I left she gave me some instruction on how to make the blowout last as many days as possible and after all my hair went through yesterday, it still looks pretty fabulous today. The salon itself is modern, clean and has a very chic, girly feel that I loved. After some friendly conversation with my stylist I was able to sit back and watch bride wars, sip my orange infused water and charge my iphone at the docking station provided by my chair... couldn't have asked for more! Will definitely be going back! PS: My appointment started right on time! I actually arrived a couple minutes early and they took me back right away. I am a loyal Drybar customer- and before moving down to Washington DC, I frequented several of the NYC Drybar locations, and couldn't have been happier with each appointment I had. This was my first time at their Georgetown location, and I was a little disappointed. I love the pampering feel of Drybar- nothing better than preparing for a night out with friends than getting your hair done. At the Georgetown location though- I wasn't offered a drink upon arrival! Seems like a small detail, but always set the mood to enjoy your blowout with a glass of champagne or wine. I was there on Valentine's Day, which has to be one of their most popular days, but I seemed to be rushed in and out. I was happy with my hair when I left, but the familiar pampering feel that I enjoyed so much was definitely missing. read more

I went in to get a blow out before my bridal shower. I showed a picture of what I wanted off the drybar tumblr, and my stylist seemed to know exactly how to do it - it was a more voluminous beachy look. Shampoo was fine, but when it came to the actual blow drying part there was a lot of hair getting caught in the brush, brush stabbing face. And the look was going just fine until the very end, when lots of hairspray and a curling iron changed the look completely from what I was going for. I ended up just washing it out and doing my hair myself for the day. Oh well. read more

I wanted a smooth blowout with some volume and she gave me exactly what I asked for. I don't like to use too many products on my hair, so she asked before applying products. Their cookies are great! Combine them with free champagne or/and wine they give you and you are guaranteed to overindulge. I discovered Drybar in NYC and was immediately hooked. Blowout menu - yes please! But I also love that you can just tell them what you would like or show a pic and they would try to recreate it. Their stylist are all pretty good although some are definitely better than others. Not sure if you can request a particular stylist though. Drinks and cookies make Drybar a perfect pre-party for any special occasion. I'm not yet sure how I feel about the all-white decor of this particular location but I'm leaning towards "I like it" category. The booking system on your iphone is great! Tip: I think they add more appointments if there is high demand for a certain date. So if you didn't get the desired slot at first - try again a day before - you may get lucky. Now the only star is kicked off because of the location - it's quite a hike from the main strip of Georgetown. read more

I got a call around 7:45pm on a Friday saying that my Saturday afternoon appointment had been cancelled because the Georgetown location was closed until the following Tuesday. I have been going to DryBar for a year or two now and generally have a great experience! However, I am writing to specifically review Lola who was WONDERFUL! Having curly hair people often don't understand that curling the ends is a terrible idea given that my hair curls in on itself. Lola was amazing and listened to everything I had to say and gave me the BEST blowout I have ever had. I wanted to love Drybar, but I didn't. I went to get my hair done for my 21st birthday party, and I asked for a Cosmo. The hairstylist recommended I get the MaiThai because she said it would look better with my sequin dress, so I got that. I really liked the way she did my hair, but I told her that my hair falls out quickly, so I asked that she use extra hairspray to help it hold. She pretty much just misted it with some spray, but did nothing else to help the style hold. When I got back to my apartment (only about 15 minutes away from the salon), my hair was really frizzy, and the waves were falling out. I had to spend a decent amount of time with a curling iron retouching my hair and had to respray my hair with hairspray so that it looked good again. I understand that hair styles fall out, but I had told my stylist this, so I would have expected her to take that into consideration. read more

Monique listened to and gave me exactly what I wanted -- long gorgeous sexy curls that made it through dance showcase performances, an evening birthday party, and was still going strong the next day! Plus she was very friendly, professional, and explained everything she was doing with my hair. The only complaint I have is that when I came in, I waited several minutes before I was acknowledged, even though several employees clearly saw me, no one greeted me or told me what to do to check in. Once the designated greeter was free and helped me, everything was great from that point forward. The rest of my experience was good enough to make up for it, but it did start my experience on a less-than-stellar note (thus 4 instead of 5 stars). read more

I never post reviews but this place definitely deserved a good one. I was a little weary about going to this place because I have thick natural curly African American hair. When I where my hair straight I like it STRAIGHT. My stylist Monique did a very good job on my hair. She managed to get all of my hair very straight without the crazy amount of heat used in Dominican salons. I love atmosphere of this place. The staff is sooooo friendly. All of the stylist looked beautiful. I hate going to a salon and the stylist hair looks super crazy. Overall I will definitely be returning soon. read more

I was so nervous about the DryBar experience at first. Typically chain salons don't work so well for women of color (especially with non chemically treated hair!). The idea that I couldn't really call and speak to someone directly in the salon was unnerving, too. BUT I WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED! The experience at DryBar was wonderful. The salon is nice and clean, my appointment started promptly, and it was nice to have one person working on just MY hair the entire time. The price can't be beat either. If you are reading this because you're considering a trip to DryBar--stop reading and make your appointment! The only reason I didn't give a full five stars is that my friends that use DryBar Atlanta get mimosas ;). No seriously the only issue I would have is the stylist was a bit timid to get down in there to wash this thick head of hair! ..and one more thing, if you are curious about whether or not they have products "for you" (full transparency...that's how I felt before going), they had Moroccan Oil products! Leyanna is amazing! Everyone greeted me with a smile. The water was delicious (infused with lemon), and I was super comfortable. My hair is super curly (I am biracial) and is mid-way down my back but that didn't scare Leyanna. She had me in and out in an hour and fifteen minutes! A record for sure! All the curly-haired ladies know what an achievement this is, especially those with thick hair like me! I was very pleased with how she even brushed out my hair. The products are not harsh and made it easier to comb out my hair without conditioner. Like what??? Amazing. I have nothing but great things to say about Drybar and totally recommend it. This location is very cute and very nice. The people however were quit unprofessional. They talked in depth about personal inappropriate situations I wouldn't want my daughter to hear. When I showed them a picture of the hair I wanted they said um no we can't do that. I was somewhat unimpressed with my cosmopolitan that they made me get. My friend treated me for my birthday, and I wish we had gone to a different location instead of wasting her money there. I have a bruise on the back of my head from my rough wash, and my stylist got water all over my freshly made up face. When I asked for the old fashioned, she said it was not possible but proceeded to mess up my hair any way. I get that you can't have hair that looks like what they show you in the book, but it fell out within an hour. Still, it was fun to be with my friend on my birthday. I was really looking forward to my first blow out at drybar since I love the products so much. I was really disappointed....it was very easy to tell that they overbooked because when I walked in, 3 other people were waiting. My appointment started 30 minutes late, and I think might have actually been done by the front desk lady who was my stylist, because she wasn't wearing an apron like the rest of the stylists. I paid for the floater and did not receive that, and was put in a chair with no visible mirror to see how she was doing my hair. Multiple times she would periodically stop doing my hair to check her cell phone at the front desk and check people in. She even made a comment about how my hair would be so easy and take no time, compared to the other customers I guess. While I appreciate her (perhaps) stepping up and doing my hair when the other stylists were backed up, I couldn't help but think it was because my hair is so "easy", and because it was terribly overbooked. If it were easy, I would do it myself! I made my appointment a week in advance, with many open time slots available, so I don't understand why it was so overbooked (especially since the service was so bad). I wasn't a huge fan of how my hair turned out either, I brushed it out when I got home.
