This store has a large inventory and some great staff! Granted I was already in a good mood, meeting up with an old friend to run errands on a recent visit, the friendly, professional and helpful guidance I received from Holly made me want to Yelp! The layout is spacious and even though we weren't able to track the size we were looking for, the staff was kind when I requested to look into other stores. Overall a pleasant experience. Use Amazon instead - at least they get their orders correct. I have ordered shoes online twice and when I go to pick the shoe up, it is a completely different shoe. All this after lining up for 15 minutes to get the incorrect shoe, then standing around while for another 15 minutes while the customer associate tries to locate my shoe. The last time this happened I cancelled my order and asked for a refund, I was told that I would receive a refund within 3-5 days but I still haven't received it, the customer service is horrible and when you call it takes a long time to find someone to help. Amazon never send the wrong shoe, so I advise shopping there instead where the refund policy and customer service is better - you will also find the same shoes on Amazon.com! Love that the staff says that you can't try on shoes and need to move out the way so they can't stock inventory then proceed to not stock any inventory in that aisle. This DSW really irritated me. I came here because they were having an amazing sale, not to mention, I had an additional DSW member coupon. I purchased a few pairs of shoes and part of the sale was a buy one, get the other at a percentage off. In addition, the more you buy, the more you saved. The problem was, the discount didn't calculate correctly on the computer and the staff had to make the manual calculation. Prior to me leaving, I felt like she didn't calculate it correctly. Since I had some place to go, I reviewed my receipt a few hours later. Once I completed my calculations at home I noticed there was an error. I called immediately and they told me to come back to the store with my receipt, no need to bring the items. When I arrived back to the store the following day I presented my receipt and explained the situation. The first cashier gave me a hard time and asked for my items. I explained to them that I spoke with a supervisor the previous day and reiterated what he stated. Another cashier and supervisor had to assist to resolve the situation and they owed me almost $100! read more

AVOID THIS LOCATION!!! I love DSW and get all of my shoes from this company, but for some reason, the Union Square location has TERRIBLE service and cannot get their act together. It's the most convenient location for me and the past two times I've used in-store pick-up, they have messed up my orders (and I didn't get either pair in time for an event.) The lines are always long and slow. It's a very busy location -- please staff your store accordingly. Staff is extremely inattentive and I'm always forced to ask two different sales associates to check for a size after the first just fails to even come back. This review isn't so much for this store as it is for the entire chain. We all think we're these autonomous creatures but we're not. We are chained and bound by our DNA. As I am a walking talking female and therefor a slave of my two X chromosomes, I am thus a walking talking female that loves shoes. It's all part of the universe's plan, I can't fight it, I just have to give in to that uniquely female need for shoes and more shoes. As with every discount retailer, it's a hit or miss. It's best just to go with no expectations whatsoever. I have had the most success when I do this and I have had even more success when I'm looking at shoes for the following season. It's August, I just found a cute pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs that I can't wear until September/October. Today I bought the most beautiful pair of Old Gringo cowboy boots that I have ever seen and I am from Texas, friendos. I know cowboy boots! Normally they would have been around $600, I paid around $450. Not bad, although now I have maybe $1.50 left for the rest of the week. Specifics: -If you don't see your size on the floor and there isn't a sign that says, "ask for more sizes" then sadly of sadlies you are out of luck. If you take the box up to the register they can see if it's online or at another store. -They have this rewards program that to this day I don't understand. I get these little $10 and $20 dollar certificates in the mail rather often though, definitely a fan of that. -I don't know how or why as there is little financial incentive to do so, but they always seem to hire people that are friendly. Normally in places like this the staff could not care less, this has never been my experience at DSW. They are not only helpful, they are genuinely happy to answer questions. I love shoes. I am cheap. Thus, I love DSW. I have no use for snooty, designer dress shoes, I only want sneakers and boots. The key to DSW is to completely pass up the main floor and go straight to the clearance section in the back. Come back often. If there is something you like but aren't willing to pay for, wait for a while, and it might show up in the clearance section eventually. Markdowns are color coded (red, purple, green,) according to the percentage of the discount. It's just like an Easter egg hunt! If you are a runner, you can actually find real running shoes here (not the "fashion" models not intended for running, though you can find those too,) for very cheap sometimes in the clearance section. But you must be patient and persistent and come back often. The music going up the escalator drives me nuts, though. read more

OMG shoes! Oh noes, they don't have my bigfoot size :( I've literally almost had anxiety attacks in this store because of how busy and overwhelming it is. Everything is one big leather and shoelace blur after awhile. Nothing looks cute eventually simply because of overload. Clearance rack won't actually save you money because you find too many pairs for "cheap" and spend a fortune, but you'll hardly wear them because they weren't so cute to begin with...that's why they were on clearance. I like the White Plains location better (when I can make it there once every year and a half). Much more relaxed, organized and stocked with sizes and variety. read more

I have to say, I am not happy with the DSW redesign. On the positive side, I suppose it has more atmosphere (if you're the sort of person that finds Starbucks atmospheric). But really, do I come to a Discount Shoe Warehouse to linger and socialize? No...I come to find cheap shoes, buy them, and leave. I particularly don't like that full and half sizes are now shelved together in the clearance section. If, like me, you're between a 7 1/2 and an 8, that means twice as many shelves to scan, with only half as much chance any given pair of shoes will fit you. I also noticed that the sales staff seems to have gotten much less vigilant about re-shelving mis-shelved sizes. Did some consultant come in and tell DSW they needed to increase average length of user visits? I disapprove. read more

Been shopping at DSW since I lived in Chicago, it's highly addictive. I can spend hours here on the weekends just shoe shopping. They have great deals, a great selection, and its usually not too crowded for me. I love shopping here so much, that I only allow myself one trip here a month. I spend way too much money. DSW - it's not my thing since I can't shop in madness and their merchandise set up just makes me dizzy. But came here recently since my friend's sandals were bothering her and she wanted to see if they have anything comfortable for her to wear. What's the best possible way to shop in a place where there's no organization skills at all? Do one go down each row after row to find shoes? The only thing that's easy to look at is their designer shoe selection. This weekend I feel in love - seriously, with a pair of shoes. They were lovely and the softest nappa leather ever! I usually don't fall in love this quick but they are sooooooooo cute and they were the cutest shoes they had in the entire store. Sharmin - the lady there tried to help me find some shoes that were cheaper and just as soft as these shoes, but she there were none to be found. *sigh* I debated over getting these shoes, since these shoes are really pricey and I know I would cut someone up if they stepped on my shoes and ruined them. Sure, I should spoil myself but I've been spoiling myself quite frequently and I feel ashamed! Shoes - majority of the time you're stepping in indescribable things all day and most likely you will scratch the leather off from walking on some cobblestone area. Membership does have its privileges... once you spend X amount you get a reward gift certificate. With winter around the corner, I needed socks, so taking my rewards points, I piled up on knee socks and paid just $3.00...it does pay to be a member. I think they've got more staff on the floor these days because the normal piles of boxes and shoes laying around are no more...you can actually find the shoe directly under the display, find your size, and find the shoes inside the box. And maybe people are being nicer too by placing the shoe back into the box back into the shelf. It really does make a difference. Designer shoe section is usually full of Gucci, which I love, so its almost impossible for me not to giggle in delight. Now if only those reward points would add up faster.... read more

I was a huge DSW fan back in DC, so I was glad to see it right next to Filene's (my other guilty pleasure) when trekking down to Union Square. Admittedly, I first went into Shoe Mania because I figure it's storefront and it sounds lame enough to where they'd have good cheap shoes. No. However this is not a review for Shoe Mania. My favorite thing about DSW is that (unlike Shoe Mania), the sizes are right under the shoe on display. No hunting down a salesman just to have him come back and say ohh we don't have that size.. At least I can look and know if it's available. They also are pretty much huge. There are plenty of styles and brands of shoes to choose from. Some you will get a great deal on, and some you will not - however, if you're not getting a great deal, then you're just spending what they normally cost... so you can't REALLY complain. My only issue is that the line did take forever last night, and I was only like 3rd in line. Though.. this is pretty much how DSW is everywhere, so alas, I am used to it. read more

This is how this store gets 5 stars. They have a great selection for reasonable prices. (yes the crowds can be murder) BUT THEY GET YOU OUT THE DOOR QUICKLY. On this sunny Sunday afternoon, this check out line would have had me dropping the 3 pairs I had stacked up in a heartbeat. However, I said to myself. "these people have handled it in the past...why not now?" This line was through the snaked gates, and all the way along the front glass of the entire length of the store, and these people had me out of there in 10 minutes!!!. I can wait longer than that for my coffee at any random Dunkin or Starbucks with 5 people. This is truly an MBA experiment in queue management, and the management knows what they are doing. read more

This has become my go-to place for when I have an exact style of shoe or boot in mind and want to find it in one stop. It's a massive store with rows and rows and ROWS of every type of shoe out there, plus ample discount racks. One of the down sides of shopping at DSW is the pain of kicking myself when finding shoes I already own, inevitably priced lower than where I bought them. The selection is mostly what I would call good mid-level designer shoes (think Nine West, Cole Haan, Steve Madden, Etienne Aigner) with a smattering of labels on both the lower and higher end of the spectrum. You can find Manolos, D&Gs, and Jimmy Choos here ... the selection of these is limited, but it's well worth browsing as their prices are as good as it gets. Their athletic shoe section has every type of brand for most sports; best if you already know what type and brand you need, as the staff doesn't specialise in athletic footwear. Wish I could say the same for the purse and bag department; it's mostly lesser-known designers and not much of a selection, but as this is a SHOE store, it's forgivable. The place is massive and can be a bit overwhelming; not the place to come with cranky children or significant others, because you will probably be spending more time here than you bargained. read more

Ugh. So one of the heels on those red patent leather Italian stilletos actually BROKE OFF within a month or two of non-regular wearing. And once I got it repaired, it broke off again within a couple of wearings. I think this is the definition of "structurally unsound." That said...I still give this place pretty good vibes overall. I guess I'm pretty picky when it comes to shoes, I usually prefer standard colors, age-appropriate brands (no Keds for me!) and styles that don't look excessively dated. DSW kind of treads the line between looking too "discount" and staying on-trend--in other words, the shoes in this store offer potential that requires savvy in order to reap the benefits. Of the rows and rows of men's shoes, I found three pairs of shoes I liked. In the end, I only bought one pair because they were out of my size in the other two. The biggest restriction to finding shoes seemed to be the availability of sizes. I didn't have trouble paying. Even though there was a line, it moved swiftly. Overall, it was fun visiting DSW, but ordering online from their website would probably be a less self-conscious event for me in the future. You're not going to earn style points for the shoes alone, but you'll save money and gain net satisfaction with the experience. read more

If you cannot come here on off hours DO NOT BOTHER. This DSW epitomizes everything that irritates the bejesus out of me about NYC. Crowds up the wazoo, so much so that you cannot walk up and down the aisles. And ,as a bonus, obnoxious customers who will completely block your path, shove you, or insult you...Or all three. I was actually so disgusted by one group of girls that I walked, no ran, away from a pair of boots I would have otherwise purchased...That's how offensive this crowd is. Oh and if you're lucky, the escalators won't be working, since that's the case at least 50% of the time, so your experience is just that much closer to the pits. The one semi-positive? I love DSW but this location really sucks. TLRD: DON'T GO HERE IF YOU CAN HELP IT. - In terms of stock and selection, the Herald Square one is much better. This location is very small and crowded (one floor as opposed to 4), resulting in a very poor shopping experience. - It's way too crowded. They always have to double the line, which leaves very little space for people to walk by after they have paid. - Always makes mistakes. I used the pickup in-store service because it saves me time looking in the store. But twice, the staff made a mistake and claimed I had picked up a pair that I didn't want and left behind. What the hell is the point of having me try on the shoes then decide?? I'd rather have them do a refund right there than going through all this customer service crap. Never again. Everytime I go to this place it's a fucking madhouse. First thing in the morning? MADHOUSE 15 mins before closing? MADHOUSE The sale section is a mess. Even the regular aisles are a mess. UGGly boots thrown about. And up front they have like a designer special section stocked with heinous, hooker-esque heels in tiny sizes. Now who the hell wears a women's size 4 1/2 shoe? Isn't that a size for like, little girls? What little girl do you know that should be teetering around in $300 4inch heels?
