This place is a must try. Their crust alone is a wonderful mystery. How something so thick can be so light and airy is something that has to be eaten to be believed. Grabbed a quick dinner here last night. I've never had Detroit style pizza so I didn't know what to expect. We got the Haole which came in 4 big slices. It's a small spot, but with lots of personality. You can't eat here with a large group, but it's worth picking your food up from them so you can eat it fresh. The Haole was delicious. I ordered two half squares today, the 313 and Haole aka not Hawai'ian. Both of these were so damn good. The crust/dough is insane, it's so fluffy and bouncy with a super crispy crust and a fantastic bite. There's so much flavor in the dough alone I could eat it by itself. The 313 is rather simple but executed to perfection. Cheesy, savory, herby, light, and just delicious. The pesto and vodka sauce are as good or even better than the top pasta places. I hadn't had a Detroit pizza in a while, so I head over to Santa Monica Blvd. after attempting to order online, which presented me with a problem until I finally figured it out. I did not get applied the discount that I was offered, but when I explained it the manager gave me a coupon to use next time for my discount. I ordered the "D.B.M." Dtown Burrata Margherita GF. A bit pricey but then pizza prices have risen and I get penalized being Gluten intolerant. Don't Sleep on the Pepper Tray--An Absolute Game Changer! D-Town in West Hollywood has been on my list for a while, and I finally made it out there. I ordered a simple, deep-dish pepperoni pizza and only waited about 10 minutes for it to come out. My first bite was good, but then I looked over to my left and noticed their crushed pepper tray. Let me tell you: do NOT sleep on those peppers! This isn't your basic, generic crushed pepper. They have a whole selection, and trying a few of them elevated the taste of the pizza tenfold. The pizza on its own is great, but once I added those peppers, it took it to a whole other level. I ordered the full-size pizza, which comes with four thick slices, and ate two of them right there with those phenomenal crushed peppers. I brought the other two slices back home, which was about a 45-minute drive. Once I got home, I reheated them in the oven, but the consistency just wasn't the same. Being from NYC, I always assumed the only deep dish was Sicilian. Much later on I realized Chicago had great deep dish too. But! Nothing in deep dish comes close to Detroit-style pizza. I am late to this game but a quick learner. From now on, when we want deep dish pizza we will always choose Detroit style. And, the best I have had so far is definitely from dtown pizzeria, hands down. What I love about the WeHo location is easy parking during the late afternoon (say, 3-ish?), the fact that owner Ryan is there making each pie to order (and is so friendly and fast, too!), and the pizzas are superb. The crust is the feature I most appreciate in a Detroit-style pie. It is literally caramelized from the Wisconsin brick cheese that is incorporated with the dough. It is hard to describe the effect, but if cheese could be candy, this would be it. We got the 1946 Cheese and the "D.B.M" Dtown Burrata Margherita. Remember, we are vegetarians, so those two appealed to us the most. And they were divine, literally melt in your mouth perfect. See the photos. Now, remember, these are not huge, wide pies. We figure we could get two meals out of the two we ordered. They are filling, though. I especially appreciated the cloud-like pillows of burrata on the Margherita. I have never had mozzarella so expertly baked. The prices are very good, the place itself is clean and even inviting in a techno pizzacratic sort of way (look at the photos -- professional chefs will understand the efficiency and layout of the speed-racks and other stainless equipment. It looks sort of top of the line to me, with my baker's eye). It is a smallish, efficient little operation that does a few things but does them perfectly. The one thing I would advise? Eat your pizza there, even if you have to stand on the sidewalk to do it (there is seating, however, limited). That is the way to savor these masterpieces. Ours was room temp by the time we got it home and even then, we were rolling our eyes at how good they were. Next time, I am eating mine straight from Ryan's hands! I cannot imagine deep dish getting lighter, crisper, tastier, softer, meltier, mouth-pleasinger than these. Do not miss this opportunity. You will think you are in Motown. read more

Ironically I had to move from NYC to Los Angeles to even know that Detroit style pizza existed. Over the last few years I've tried a few Detroit style spots in LA, and my favorite is Slice House by Pizza champion Tony Gemignani, which serves other styles of pizza as well. I was told that D-Town was better and a must try. I placed my order and it was ready at exactly the time I requested. When I walked into the place, right away I got that weird, cold West Hollywood vibe I never liked, and I'm talking about the workers. Anyway.... Items ordered... -Half Goomba add Sausage -Half 313 -6 Piece Buffalo Wings -6 Piece Sweet Chili Wings Both pizzas were really good but a tad salty. I thought it was the meat toppings, but the 313 which only had pesto and vodka sauce was a little salty as well. Perhaps it's the cheese they use? The vodka sauce I thought could have been more flavorful and I've had better in NY. When comparing the sauce and the dough to Slice House, I give the edge to Slice House. They have a more chunky flavorful red sauce and the dough is slightly more dense in the middle with a better crunch on the bottom. I though D-Town's dough was almost a tad too soft. D-Town definitely wins with that crusty cheese on the outer edge..simply amazing! Both styles of wings were much better than expected, but that Sweet Chili one was amazing. It tasted like a char sui sauce on Chinese spare ribs. Unfortunately there was no blue cheese for the wings and the big miss for me was how they charged and extra $2 for Ranch, which is not included with the wings. I had just dropped a $60 order, the least they could do was throw in some Ranch, which I had to pay for when I got there, despite my order already paid for in advance. And honestly, that Ranch sauce was just okay and nothing special. If I were in the area I would probably go back, but I'm never in West Hollywood, so I don't think I would go out of my way for it. This is some great Detroit style pizza! I tried the 313 (pesto, vodka, and classic red sauce), the goomba and the classic cheese. The amount of sauce and cheese they use is perfect and the way they cook their pizza by giving it that nice crunchy outside char with the soft/chewy inside was done just right. I really liked all 3 and would definitely order again. I also ordered wings which came out great too - sometimes wings can be dry and crunchy if nit prepared with care but these guys did a great job with the wings. Perfectly cooked, generous on the sauce and it also came with this ranch sauce that was out of this world. $25 is a very tall order for a 4 square slice pizza. In fact, it's about 5-7 dollars above market value comparable to other orders. So Is DTown Pizzeria $7 better than the rest? I genuinely am fan of the aesthetics of a Detroit style pizza. And while it's very similar to sicilian there are many differences. Sicilian is more puffy. Detroit, is more flat. Sauce is within, while Detroit sauces the cheese above the toppings. Sicilian is made in a giant rectangular sheet. My favorite part of course is the almost caramelized crisp square ends. It has some crunch. I wanna say, and this is a stylistic preference, I'm just not that big of a fan of Detroit style. Surprise. Like the competition, the cheese is scant, and it's mostly bread. Being born and raised in Detroit, I know this style of pizza pretty well. Initially saw a review of D-Town Pizzeria on TikTok and had to try it for myself. I ordered a Half 1946 Cheese Pizza w/ mushrooms and a half order of Garlic Cheese Sticks. The crust on the 1946 is close to perfection and the ratio of sauce to cheese is good as well. This one has a great crunch and decent cheese pull. I wish the marinara was more seasoned but this is a solid Detroit slice. The standout for me on this trip was the Garlic Cheese Sticks. The flavor on these is a 9 out of 10 so make sure you add these to your order. The side of chili oil is a great addition to the sticks as well.
