There was a short time that the store was closed in 2010 after the passing of the last remaining original family proprietor until the present owners reopened the doors in 2011 but that's like splitting hairs. Believe it or not they still carries staples like bread, butter and milk, but also other essential items for mountain life like local vegetables, jams, and honey to rakes, paint, plumbing and things that many people have never seen. The old original scales and carts can still be found scattered around the store amongst so many other things from the past that would be nearly impossible to find these days even if you have an Amazon Prime account. Although there has been some technology installed, the old cash register from 1913 still sits close by and is still operational if there is ever a need. So while Pace General still has thousands of traditional and contemporary items for sale, it's also a museum of mountain memories and memorabilia that will carry on this family legacy. If you really want a history lesson on the area spend a few hours here then drive around the area and see what living history looks like...

In one section of the store there are two trifold posters with pictories and reports of the history. The walls display more pictures telling the history. Throughout the store are also antique items telling the history of items sold in the store. The store sells local produce and grocery items as well as just about any common item you might need. We were NOT DISAPPOINTED in the least. Ice cream is made daily, in fact while we were there it was being made! The selection of flavors were good, definitely not 31 flavors which was just fine bc the flavors offered covered all one needs. For the price, OMGosh the serving size is OUTSTANDING (single serving in the cup)!!! We were in ice cream heaven. We thought for the price of a sundae it was a bargain especially the size of it (I took pics of some from a couple ladies who bought one). The young gals were very friendly with excellent customer service - Cassie especially. The taste was delicious and very creamy packed with flavor. They also make mini donuts which goes in one of the sundaes they offer but I was also told during Apple season, they are Apple flavored. Definitely already planning a return visit in October. Also plenty of space to eat inside and out on the patio. They do have a drive through too and ample parking behind the shop.

I ordered a single scoop of Heavenly Heath and it was heavenly!! So creamy and delicious. The workers were so kind and friendly, too! Recommend checking this place out!

This little independently owned shop has limited hours on limited days of the week, there nothing like an owner who opens when he wants to and serves up a great selection of novelties, this almost always ensure you'll get quality products and it also means you'll probably have to pay up a little although I found the moderate pricing to be reasonable. The menus are posted everywhere once you climb the flight of stairs to the porch level - like more traditional ice cream stands there's a ordering window and a pickup window this to me signifies this place can get pretty busy although today that wasn't the case, of course I arrived a few minutes after opening. This place seems to offer unlimited flavors of ice cream and as I reviewed all the postings the only distraction was a couple of teenage boys seating on the bench beside the railing - one was crunching on his cup full of ice while the other was sucking on lemons he retrieved from his empty cup of lemonade, both were a little annoying but I was here for ice cream so it's wasn't hard to ignore the ill-mannered children although they arrived here in a early 2000 mini truck that hadn't seen a car wash in months. We found a picnic table under a big oak tree that provided shade to enjoy our treat and far enough away from the ice cruncher and lemon sucker to relax and suck down our shakes, I was bound and determined to do a little straw sucking to get some payback but unfortunately the two departed before I got to the bottom of my cup. We ordered a Banana and North Carolina Peach Shake in separate cups of course the smooth ice cream was filled with freshly sliced bananas and delicious peaches that kept clogging up the straws (that's a great sign for me it reminded me of my childhood when you had to pull the straw and do a reverse slurp to clean the fruit from within). The owners were friendly but focused and the little windows only provided a small portal to the inside which I thought was rather comical - a hand appeared to take the payment then it appeared again to hand over the product. It was a great experience over-all and the shakes were delicious, this is definitely a gem in the mountain forrest and deserves a visit again and again when in the area...
