Great little spot right off the main country roads on Hwy 11- that leads to many hikes, and swimming holes, mountain towns, and it's a great place to stop in and eat! We had passed it so many times and always wanted to stop in. We finally got to today and it was so much nicer and bigger inside than we had imagined! Very cute inside, the way they decorated, with nice wooden tables. Their food menu is bigger than I expected, and they make it from scratch. They have many sandwiches (even a Cuban, or carnitas! Impressive!), beef hot dog plates and toppings, BBQ, sides, wraps, soups and stews, a baked goods station, ice cream station, coffee station, and a gift shop connected next door. The man running the place-- I assume the owner of this family spot-- was so nice and cheery! He was so helpful and told us about the food he had. The younger girl working with him was nice too. You walk up to the counter and order, get your food and sit down, then pay when you leave. It was busy and seemed like the place to be! Our food was great! My son and I each got the 1 hot dog plate which comes w a choice of side. (They have 2 hot dog plates also). Many sides to choose from like roasted cabbage, Mac n cheese, slaw, collard greens, soup, chips, and many others. I topped my dog with ketchup, his mustard bbq sauce (so good!), sauerkraut, and cheese. Delicious! I tried the spicy vinegar slaw- delicious! My son loved his and the Mac n cheese too. My SO got the brisket sandwich w the mustard BBQ sauce (3 bbq sauces to choose from) and said it was delicious. I saw someone w the New Brunswick stew and it looked very good. All very affordable and good sized portions. The gift shop was cute too, w many locally made items, candies, candles, blankets, wreaths, honey, elderberry, mugs, toys, soaps, chapstick, etc. We will definitely be back to try more things, the next time we head to the mountains or on a hike. I have a friend from New Jersey who considers himself a hotdog connoisseur. I took him to MJ for a late lunch. He got 2 dogs with sauerkraut and baked beans. I got a hotdog and cabbage as my side. I also grabbed my daughter's father in law a slice of German Chocolate cake. My friend was super impressed and he said the baked beans blew him away. He is now a MJ fan. Lamar and Marci Jo are the sweetest people. Weekends you can grab ribs ! It's a super cute store and very clean. Wow, what a gem in the mountains. As we were coming into the area to pick up our child from summer camp, we saw this place. What got our attention were the big signs saying "we're open" and the banner flags. At the corner of Highway 276 and Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway/11, you will find the most quaint cottage chic little restaurant and gift shop you've seen in a while. This place looks to have been professionally decorated on the inside. Don't let the exterior fool you. This place is nondescript and rather bland, frankly, on the outside. It is connected to a vegetable and fruit stand. This building used to the town's old general store back in the '60s. The vegetable stand/building I understand was the town's post office. The restoration the owners have done to the general store is simply magnificent. Inside, you will find rustic brick and distressed wood walls, with a country cottage-chic atmosphere. They sell various gifts - wreaths for doors, wood frames with lovely phrases painted on them, bath bombs, etc. This place is busy on the eyes - in a good way. They have an ice cream station, a bakery, a small menu of meal items, a peanut station, a coffee station. There's one long family-style table for eating and few two-seaters. It's a small place so you won't want to congregate long, unless there's not a lot of folks in. In which case, stroll around. You'll find plenty of pretty Instagram photo opportunities. We ordered the BBQ plate. I had red slaw and baked beans with mine. My husband had chips and vegetable salad with his. They make their own BBQ sauce - three kinds. The drinks you get as a bottle from a cold cooler, as opposed to a drink dispenser. That was a nice touch. You pay at the door as you leave. They said that all their food items are priced under a dollar. They've only been open a week. I sure hope the locals catch wind of this place and go support the family. They've worked long and hard for this dream. What a great experience it was for us. Nice folks, nice food, nice atmosphere. All in all, a great place to visit. P.S. Marci Jo's Olde Mountain Store is located at the intersection of Highway 276 and Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, Route 11 Although we've stopped briefly here on our way to Asheville, this time we actually sat down and ate breakfast. The baked products are delicious, and we enjoyed a breakfast burrito as well. The owners are friendly and helpful, (Marci Jo does all the baking) and the store is decorated cute as a button. You can tell folks from all over love this place from the messages written on the walls and the pins from all over in the wall map. They also sell a variety of local products, baked goods, ice cream and gifts. Never again will we stop at one of those gas stations along Highway 11 with the awful food and painfully slow service that results in something nearly inedible. read more

Marci Joe and her entire staff will give you an honest and heartwarming dining experience. First off, no matter what type of food they want, they probably have it. BBQ, hot dogs, grilled cheese, chicken salad, a lonnng list of sides, cupcakes, ice cream, you name it. Secondly, (almost!) everything they serve is homemade by the family and treated with absolute southern respect; as in plenty of salt and butter, the way we like it. And thirdly the staff will come chat with you and make sure you're happy you're entire visit. They'll make you feel like family fr especially Marci. We made a stop here after hiking in beautiful Jones Gap State Park...we are so glad we did!! Immaculate and adorable bakery, cafe' and store all rolled into one with lovely owners who really know how to deliver great customer service. We purchased a variety of muffins that were out of this world! So moist!! The cheesecake brownie is so thick and moist and just perfect with a cup of coffee. We are going to be new "regulars" when we come to the area :) They also have grilled hotdogs...not those water soaked dogs from roadside stands. We are looking forward to trying out the barbecue next time...going to need to double our hiking distance to make room for the calories that are soooo worth it! read more

This is a great little place. The decor is fantastic. This may sound odd to say, but you need to go to their bathroom. Love what they did with the sink and even the paper towel dispenser. I came on a Saturday and got ribs, pinto beans, and smoked cabbage. Also, every meal comes with a tiny cupcake. I ordered the chocolate. Everything was fantastic. The ribs fell off the bone. The smoked cabbage was really good. The pinto beans were perfectly flavored. There were great barbecue sauces to add to your meat. And, everybody there was really nice. I bought two muffins to go. On my way to go to get some sun and much-needed time in nature and I drive by this little place and see a lot of cars parked outside and I always love trying new places. The outside of the store is very cute it says come in we are awesome I immediately feel much better already ( I'm a little bit anxious sometimes. I walk inside and kind of wanted to look around after I made my order. there were crafts and lots of really cool handmade things. I usually feel a little bit awkward Going into places that I've never been before because each restaurant does things differently. I was greeted by two young girls behind the counter and I said that I had never been there before and I wasn't sure how things worked one of them told me that there was a menu behind me and another one pointed to a menu on the counter that had sides and a chalkboard that also had the sides. I made my order and was going through my purse when one of the girls said that they take the payment at the counter I noticed on the menu that it said that it came with a drink and a mini cupcake I think that one of the girls could tell that I wasn't really sure of where to get a cup from or what drinks were around or how to get the cupcake so she finally explained how things worked. I don't by any means want to say that I thought either of them were rude but I definitely Think that watching some things on customer service would make a great deal of difference. I understand that locals may already know how the place is ran and how things work in there but there's going to be a lot of travelers coming through who have no idea and I would hate for someone to feel the way that I felt when I went in. There was a gentleman in there who was very very nice I wish that he would've taken my order. He seemed sweet. The mini cup cake was absolutely delicious! read more
