Oh my lawd am I glad we finally got to try Duck Donuts - and at their OG location at that! Duck Donuts has several locations now, some even closer to home and as far away as Puerto Rico...but on our trip to OBX, all anyone could talk about is getting Duck Donuts on our way home. We arrived around 9am on a Saturday and there was a bit of a line. They have separate sections for ordering and picking up but the line went quicker than expected. The donuts came out even faster and were piping hot, as promised! They were just as amazing as people said. And devoured within seconds. A beach trip in Duck, NC would not be complete without some Duck Donuts! I absolutely love that we can customize our donut from the coating all the way to the drizzle! This allows me to go crazy and create my own concoctions which is always more exciting than getting what's pre-made! This was my first time having Duck Donuts at none other than the original one in Duck, NC! The donut shop was adorable, and clean- they are expanding at this location but that side hasn't opened yet. You order your donuts on the left side of the building and pick your donuts up on the right side. Since it was my first time in Duck I knew I had to stop in to the original Duck Donuts. Surprisingly this was my first trip to a Duck Donuts ever! The shop is actually broken up into two sides of the plaza. The spot where they actually make the donuts is super small and the original location. Apparently the health department wasn't into how many people got crammed in there so the solution was to lease another shop in the plaza to take orders and have merchandise and keep the original shop as the spot where they make the donuts and you pick up your order The donuts were super tasty and the employees were super friendly! I went for a classic cinnamon sugar with glaze and it did not disappoint. My friends went with fancier options, but to me a simple classic is always best. Before opening my box, I was going to give them a five star review. However, I cannot after they messed up my order. The sunrise donut (lemon icing with raspberry drizzle) is my favorite. My receipt shows I ordered two, yet I got lemon icing with coconut flakes. The biggest disappointment because I rarely have the opportunity to go to Duck Donuts. They open at 7 am-- plan to get here at least fifteen minutes BEFORE they open if you want to reduce your wait time. Though their process of moving the line along is as efficient as it can be to meet the demand. Apparently this is a regional chain that started in Duck but as I'm not from the area this was my first experience with the deliciousness that is Duck Donuts. Some folks have a hard preference for the crispy, fried donuts (ala-Krispy Kreme) over the cake-like donuts of places like Dunkin. Duck Donuts is the latter, but I challenge any of those cake-donut-naysayers to try these as your mind will be changed in a second. These are almost all yellow-cake style donuts only differentiated by their toppings...but the toppings make all the difference in the world (and that base-cake is about as tasty as it can be by itself anyway). My favorite was probably the "Bacon of the Day", a maple iced donut with fresh, crispy bacon bits. The fudgey chocolate-sauced ones were great as well. If you want a donut straight out of "The Simpsons", there are a variety (like the "Beach Ball") that are coated in sprinkles and bright. read more

For the unlimited options you can design your own donuts, this place rates a 5. Going at the off season is the thing to do. I can totally see the limited parking lot getting full during peak season. So, you order to the left at $16.25 per dozen; you can design your own by picking a topping and a glaze however which way you want or get some pre-designed ones. Then you walk over to the right side of the building and see your deliciousness get made. At this original location things are a little different. Walking in from the parking lot, there are two shops for Duck Donuts. They are clearly labeled, but the way the ramp is layed out tends to push you toward the one on the right which is the pick-up location. The donuts themselves, especially while warm... amazeballs. We ordered a wide variety and cut little pieces of each to share. Bacon maple are always a must, and the seasonal apple pie donut was a group favorite too. Whooooo man these are the best doughnuts hands down to exist. I don't think you could make a bad choice with the specialty options or the endless custom combinations you can create yourself. We went to the spot in Duck and ordering here was confusing at first. It's in a shopping center on the water. You order on one side then walk out and pick up on the other. These doughnuts are made to order so it does take some time, but you won't be disappointed once they are done. Still warm which you don't get anywhere else. It's truly and experience when you try one! No inside seating is strictly or to go. However there is some benches and picnic tables in the middle of the shopping center. Best donuts in the world. I have been coming to this exact location of Duck Donuts since 2010, when only two other locations existed. The donuts have held their integrity and all of the employees are always so helpful and friendly. If you want to beat the line arrive early, and if you can't avoid the line don't worry because it goes by SO fast! One reccomendation I have is walking fi you can because it is impossible to park in the parking lot. If you are driving from a town or two over, park at the waterfront shops or across the street at Scarborough fair, and make sure to walk around Duck after and show the local shops some love! Once you get to the front of the line, order the Oreo or maple bacon! Listen, visiting the flagship Duck Donuts in Duck is a must do! The donut concept if you're unfamiliar, is that you can make your own donut flavors or order off their pre-designed donuts. They make the donut fresh to order and they are warm! They're small donuts so you could eat two of them, but they are rich in flavor. They're the best warm too. I recommend eating a sweet one and then a salty one. Like I said, they are rich in flavor so go easy! The donut shop itself is split on either side of a type of deck- sidewalk that split the retail strip. The left donut shop is where you order your donuts. They have a paper form that you fill out and bring to the register to place the order. Or you could skip the paper sheet and just go up to the register to order. They have menus about with the seasonal flavors. There, you can also buy their merchandise. On the right side is where the donuts are made and handed out. You're given a number and you have to wait for your number and name to be called. It came out at a good pace for being very busy. Since they're all customized it's always made fresh to order, so they're still nice and warm when you pick it up. This location has separate locations for ordering and picking up.
