Came to check out Duck Donuts at the recommendation of a friend. I went on a weekday, so it wasn't too busy. You order at the counter and you can see all the donuts they make on a menu posted. First time, so we asked for suggestions. We chose and waited for the donuts to be made. They came out piping hot and I wish I could have eaten it one right then and there, but we took them home. They were not as warm and not sure if they would have tasted better warmer, but they were ok. I Iike to give places two tries, so we would probably go back and try a few different options and would eat there while they are warm. We tried some of the fall donuts when my family was in town. The Blueberry Pancake and Maple Bacon was my favorite. The donuts are all plain and the flavor is in the topping. I really wanted to like this place. But they came up a little short - and it may not be entirely their fault. First the positives; the shop is spotless and bright and colorful. It's got a happy vibe. This is a franchise. Because of that, the owners have to live and die by the equipment that they are required to use. And that is most of the problem here. The donuts are unremarkable. While I really do appreciate that the base of the donuts are cake mix, the fryers are woefully inadequate to cook the donuts properly. It's almost as if the oil temperature is too low to give the donuts a nice crispy exterior. The result is a slightly soggy, undercooked donut that falls apart when you handle it. It should be firm enough to support the toppings and actually make it to your mouth without falling apart. Next is the topping issue. The syrupy topping is put on top of the already soggy donut and the whole thing becomes a sticky mess when you try to pick it up and it falls apart. The last thing is the menu. I do enjoy the variety of toppings that they offer. But the menu picture suggests that they have vanilla and chocolate cake donuts, so I order one donut that I believed to be a chocolate cake base and it wasn't. I watched the cooking process and there were only vanilla cake donuts being made. So not getting what is advertised is a big negative. With all that said, I want this little shop to succeed and I hope that they take the necessary steps to tweak their process without getting in trouble with the franchiser. But if they don't change soon, I fear for their future. They seem like very nice people who deserve to succeed! read more

Having had the pleasure of eating Beiler's Donuts in NJ & PA (Amish) many times, I don't think Duck Donuts stack up. Today's experience: I walked in, no one at counter greeted me, I watched another customer trying to figure out a kiosk, and then an employee called out an order # with no response. Hhmmm... The DD claim to fame is that "cake" donuts are made to order. Staff puts icing on hot donuts after boxing them. I'm not a donut connoisseur however, I think this model is flawed. On Oct 12, I came to this Durham location around 8:30. I was told the order would take 5-10 minutes. I quietly waited 10 minutes. A girl staff in blue T-shirt was only one working in the kitchen and she was on the phone from time to time. After 10 minutes, DoorDash App reminded me that if the order was late, I need to communicate to the customer. So I asked about the status, the girl said the orders were backed up and no idea of when my order would be ready. I asked for a ball park time to inform the customer. She repeated impatiently that she had no idea of when. To me she was not happy about doing so many orders by herself and took it on me. If order piled up, she should not take that much time talking on the phone in the kitchen. Then a second girl came out to help. The walk-in customers who came in much later than me got their orders. I was still waiting. I asked them again about the order status. She said they worked in the order of sequence. I asked why later customers got theirs first. She said walk-in had priority and if I hadn't like their service, I could unassign DoorDash order and leave. At this point, I understood they were delaying my order on purpose. They were "punishing" me for asking questions. I was so angry and wanted to speak to a manager. The girl in blue T-shirt said she was the manager. I was speachless. In the end, it took 30 minutes! I'v never been treated this way, I'v never seen such an arrogant and rude staff. Apparently, Krispy Kreme is the only place in Raleigh that really sells a classic yeast donut, and most places sell cake donuts like the ones here. Donuts WAY TOO SWEET! My first time having a Duck Donut, I won't need any more. I was not expecting the texture, and since they were freshly made and very hot, it was a very mushy bite. If you like doughnuts and have never tried Duck Donuts before, they're definitely worth checking out. What makes Duck Donuts special is every doughnut is made to order and they are even customizable. There are currently three Duck Donuts locations in the Triangle: Raleigh, Durham (this one), and Cary. You can find this Duck Donuts in the Patterson Place shopping center, just off I-40 exit 270. This location has limited outdoor seating. All Duck Donuts start with a vanilla cake doughnut base and toppings are added specific to the orders that come in. The kitchen is open so everything is transparent. We literally watched as our doughnut order was prepared from scratch. They were as fresh as can be. During our visit, pricing was as follows: * Single doughnut - $1.65 * 1/2 dozen doughnuts - $8.25 ($1.38 per doughnut) * Dozen doughnuts - $14.50 ($1.21 per doughnut) The store has helpful picture menus of their best-selling doughnuts and seasonal flavors too. If you want to build your own doughnut, you can choose from 10 coatings, seven toppings, and four drizzles. A couple examples of each included powdered sugar and glaze for coatings, Oreo crumbles and graham cracker crumbs for toppings, and marshmallow and salted caramel for drizzles. In addition to doughnuts, Duck Donuts sells coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and breakfast doughnut sandwiches. Here's what we got at this location: * Maple Bacon - maple icing with chopped Hormel bacon * Vanilla Icing with Oreo Crumbles * Peanut Butter Paradise - peanut butter icing with chocolate drizzle * Strawberry Icing with Powdered Sugar (a.k.a. In general, we thought the doughnuts were delicious. They were really good hot and fresh, but didn't taste nearly as good at room temp or when eaten later in the day or the next day. This is opposed to Krispy Kreme doughnuts which hold up incredibly well over a number of days. That's the biggest "downside" to Duck Donuts for me -- they're best enjoyed immediately after purchase. From this batch, my favorite doughnut was the Peanut Butter Paradise. It was my wife's least favorite doughnut. My least favorite doughnut was the Lemon Coconut. It was my wife's favorite doughnut. The moral of the story here is pick the flavors that appeal to you because everyone's taste preferences can be different. I love Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and to me, Duck Donuts' Peanut Butter Paradise tasted like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, but in doughnut form. I didn't like the Lemon Coconut because I'm usually not a fan of tart flavors nor the texture of coconut flakes on my doughnuts. I'm a big fan of cookies and cream so Vanilla Icing with Oreo Crumbles was my second favorite. The "Oreo Crumbles" were more like Oreo powder. I think this doughnut would taste even better if the Oreo cookies were more coarsely ground instead of powdery. The Strawberry Shortcake was my third favorite followed by the Cinnamon Sugar with Peaches & Streusel (which I think was a seasonal flavor). I really liked both the sweet icing and the clumps of powdered sugar on the Strawberry Shortcake. I think the Cinnamon Sugar with Peaches & Streusel could have had a bit more peach, but otherwise, it was delectable. That cinnamon sugar has a nice melty crunch in between your teeth. The Vanilla with Raspberry Drizzle was fine as was the Maple Bacon. The Maple Bacon is popular and eye-appealing because of the bacon bits. I associate doughnuts with sweet instead of savory and smooth and creamy instead of chewy and meaty, so eating the Maple Bacon is certainly different than your typical doughnut. I'm not sure I'd order the Maple Bacon again, but it's worth trying if it sounds intriguing to you. Service was great. All of the staff was polite and worked efficiently. When orders were ready for pick-up, staff asked customers to see if their orders looked correct before closing up the boxes. Ahhh donuts. How happy I was to see that my new apartment for this travel contract was 5 mins from a donut shop that makes the donuts to order!? Amazing. Food: I've been here a few times. Their donuts with just 1 flavor of frosting. 5/5. I'd say let them rest a bit or else they'll be suuuper mushy because they were just cooked. But if you give them 10-15mins they're amazing. Do not get their coffee. Or if you do just get their cold brew or black coffee, their espresso drinks are dog. Like 2/5. Do not get a bunch of toppings on the donuts either unless you want your teeth to hurt and a headache. They look fun but even just the maple bacon was too much for me, there isn't enough donut to compensate for how sugary each bite is. Service: I'd say 3/5. The server there either forgot about me or was racist because I just ordered a cold brew and there was just one other person behind me in the shop. She took my order and the next persons order, that person was her same race and she made his full on espresso drink, then took 3 more orders, then sat on her phone for 3-4 mins until her coworker came over and made me the drink. So either that girl was lazy, racist, or what I do not know but 3 people behind me shouldn't have gotten their drinks before me when I had a basic cold brew which the white girl just took out of the fridge and poured in a cup for me. There are so many options, it makes you want to taste everything. Get what you know you like!! I went ahead and got eight donuts so my kids and I could try them all. It was $13 for eight donuts. You don't find that anywhere else. You can watch the donut itself being made, and once it cools down enough, they do the toppings and everything right in front of you. There is free water available as well as breakfast drinks, orange juice, coffee, etc. for purchase. the flavor of these donuts is more like yellow cake and powdered sugar icing. I don't like warm donuts personally but my children thoroughly enjoyed these!! The cake of the actual donut is not overly sweet so it compliments the icing well. Yes the donut does stick to the box a little bit because it's so fresh and still warm, the sugar is going to dry and cool down a little bit. It does not stick to the box impossibly, so you can actually wipe the icing off with your finger. We travel all over the country and donuts are definitely something we seek out, this is the absolute best donut place we have tried in the entire country. So I got the marshamallow and strawberry shortcake donut. They were very tasty and I'd say the topping of the marshmallow was much more rich compare to the strawberry shortcake. I'd say there is quite a good amount of hype around this place for making cake like donuts fresh inhouse with customizable toppings. For me, it didn't necessarily blow me away. They were good donuts, don't get me wrong. But, there wasn't a huge differentiating factor to other donut places and even my local specialty donut shop. The one thing that really annoyed me was that there wasn't that good of a system for orders done online via their website.
