Disappointed. Service sub par - waitress forgot our salads until I reminded her when she brought entrees. Decor needs updating - dark and creepy - mold on ceiling above our table. We were driving cross-country and Sidney was one of our stops. During the drive, I always check with yelp to see reviews for recommendations on where to eat. Since Sidney is so small, there are not many choices, so we decided to go with Dude's after looking at the menu online. It was the most expensive cheap dinner we ever had! For the prices they charge for an entree, you would not expect iceberg lettuce, store bought rolls, Country Crock spread, frozen vegetables, and fruit cocktail out of a can. Needless to say, the dinner was very disappointing, especially since it cost nearly $100 to feed our family of four. The only redeeming quality about this place was the friendly service. In hindsight, we thought we would have been better off at McDonald's because at least there, you know what you're getting. We came to Sidney specifically for Cabelas. (my husbands 50th Birthday Wish )... whatever. I wanted to take him out for a really nice steak dinner and had planned on going to the steakhouse by Cabelas. But The person at the front desk of our hotel recommended Dudes. The restaurant hasnt been updated since the 70's. No worries, we thought maybe that was what was "supposed" to have made it so world renown. Not, so. We ordered the porterhouse. Quite over priced for the quality. My steak was so tuff I could hardly cut it . My husbands wasnt much better. I wasn't even able to let my servicer know because she never came back except to drop off the bill. Which I ended up having to take up to pay at the hostess stand. They apparently don't pick it up from your table. The Service is lousy, they seemed to be overwellemed when they have more than 2 tables. It certainly didnt live up to the "fame" noted by the locals and news clippings on the walls. read more

I've been going to Dudes for around 30 yrs now, and everytime its as amazing as before if not better and better! When we get a room at any of the Hotels, we ask were is a good place to eat (were do the locals go)? Not once in all of the years have we heard anything different. Its became a ritual everywhere because of Dudes!! The steaks are amazingly huge for the price, how do they make any money? The menu has a very large variety, from grilled cheese, - to every steak you can think of - to Lobster. I tell everyone about this place and everyone comes back thanking me and my family for the BEST STEAKS EVER!!!!!! The steaks are served covered with Dudes Famous Mushrooms with Au Jus,YUMMMMY!!! And I don't like mushrooms from anywhere else-Same with there Bleu Cheese dressing(It's GREAT)! We try to go once a year, and we drive sometimes hundreds of miles out of the way to get there. And its always worth it! When is there going to be a chain of these Great Steakhouses, I've been waiting decades! I still love to drive to Sidney to get the best Steaks ever, and then I go to Cabelas to shop. Thats what you do when you go to Sidney, DUDES and CABELAS! There is usually a waiting list when you go, but that means good food and there is Cold Drinks in the Lounge next door. And if there is a waiting list in a town that size, it definitly speaks for itself. The employees always look like there working hard, and for as busy as they always has been GREAT SERVICE! Please don't let these other reviews fool you like they do to us. This place was the absolute worst food we have ever tasted. We had a ny strip steak that was way overcooked and charred. All you tasted was a burnt flavor. We also ordered "chopped sirloin wrapped in bacon" which tasted like a burnt hamburger patty wrapped in bacon. We also found it strange that both our plates were piled high with mushrooms and served with fresh carnation flowers on the side. Yes real flowers with our food. To make everything worse, our bill was $62. $62 for the worst food of my life. Will never go back. I tried giving them 0 stars but had to give at least one. read more

Take out orders should be as simple as the person answering the phone asking you what you would like and delivering that order to the kitchen. Not so here. You have to wait for five minutes for the person who answered to try to get a waitress on the line. When they are unsuccessful they come back with a rude and load disposition telling you they are too busy and to call back in a half an hour. Not only will I not call back in half an hour because I am hungry now, I will be putting Dude's back to the bottom ofif the list for options when I desire restaurant fare at any time due to the rudeness of the staff. read more

I hate to give a restaurant a bad review. I know how hard it is to be in the biz. What most people would find irksome, I didn't...after waiting for 58 minutes to be seated, one of the chefs (the owner I think) came out and asked why we had been waiting so long. Neither of us could give a reason...come to find out, they had marked us off the reservation list (we had arrived on time and checked in with our name). He apologized and we were seated about five minutes later. He told us they would make everything alright (whatever that entailed...we didn't ask). Still neither of us were irked/too tired and hungry, lol. The service continued to be pretty miserable and most the patrons had cleared out by that time, so the wait staff COULD have been more attentive...but they were cleaning up to shut down. Our salads were pretty small: about 1/4 cup of lettuce on my partner's plate and about 1/3 cup on mine...more dressing than vegetables, lol and I'm not kidding. I figure since we had been skipped over and they were shutting down they didn't want to cut more lettuce, cabbage, etc. (or open another bag of salad). I ordered a medium rare filet which was cooked to well (completely cooking of meat instead of pink inside, but no carmelizing of the meat, just gray inside and out), he ordered the 30 0z. prime which came out looking like it was gnawed on (lol), completely gray (instead of rare as he ordered). Both of us were so hungry that we ate as there was little besides fast food restaurants open in Sidney by the time we were seated and served or we would have walked (remember our hour wait when we had reservations that we did inquire about a few times, that was finally noticed by the chef). Some serving/recipe problems: there is an au jus poured on their meats which REALLY is just not needed (has a chemical/mass produced bouillon taste and detracts from the meats; I was shocked and could not believe a previous review when they stated that canned mushrooms were used to top the steaks instead of fresh...but yes..they actually use canned schrooms when it's so easy to prep (the prep cook can do this) and grill or saute FRESH schrooms...again,what a horrible thing to do to a piece of meat; the dipping sauce for shrimp is like a marshmallow fluff, cream cheese and maraschino cherry concoction which is just nasty. My soup was served with the main course instead of before the main course (it was a frozen or canned chicken noodle...I had been told a tomato basil). What is nice is that there are some reasonably priced wines on their wine list and in Nebraska if you don't finish your wine, the bottle can be corked and sealed in a plastic bag so you can take it with you. Like I said, I know the biz is hard, because I used to teach people to work in the biz and also have worked in restaurants, but so much was lacking here. Our meal was 88.00 and we tipped 15% instead of 20% because we actually felt sorry for the people whom worked here. We did not and dared not order dessert. My partner is still pretty angry over the experience, I'm not but can't give this restaurant a good review (by the way, we did eat here two years ago and the food was above average...this experience was a pretty bad one on all levels: service, quality of food, quality of recipes, cleanliness, sloppy plating, lack of salad ingredients). Added this today in an edit: the steaks as mentioned in other reviews are pricey. I've had a much better quality steak (my filet was two end pieces flattened down to look like one piece of filet (old restaurant tip in combining end pieces of filet for sale which you would NOT find in a hugh end steak house) surrounded by a rather fatty piece of bacon...funny that the bacon surrounding the steak pieces was fatty, limp and way underdone when the steak was well done and the proteins not carmalized...could not understand how this was cooked...may have been rewarmed in a microwave. Still pricey for a beef raising, fattening and producing state. My filet was 30.00 and his prime was 32.00. The price should have matched the quality but it didn't. One more thing...for a cleaner premise they might remove the carpet as the carpet was pretty nasty...maybe they wash it once a week, but the night we went was a Wednesday night. read more

I swear I hate to write this, but it's the truth. Maybe Dude's ownership will read these reviews and "tighten" down their act. I'm M-62, and a 3rd. gen Nebraskan. I moved from Nebr. to Ariz. where I live now as a 7 yr. old. OK...there's a reason I write this. I've been a hard-core storm chaser for over 30 yrs, spending a month ea. spring (tornado season) in tornado alley filming storms/tornadoes. I began dining at Dude's years ago, each time my chase team and I would land in Sidney for the night. It was quite special to me from the standpoint that the ambiance and the entire layout and "vibe" of Dude's was a time-warp back to the restaurants I remember as a kid in Nebraska. You really can't find that anywhere but the Midwest. Usually once every year or two we'd land in Sidney, and I'd be so glad to make the trek to Dude's Steakhouse. But year after year up to the present....the place really began to go downhill. They used to have just KILLER steaks and trimmings....the way we baby-boomers would remember from back in the day. But the steaks, heck....everything....the salads, the side dishes, all went south and it was soon evident that the place I used to know and love was no more. There was even colored tape to fix the big tears in the booth's seats. I am not a jerk, but if I am paying to eat somewhere, I better not have a waiter or waitress that doesn't give a rip about me....and that's what I have been getting lately there. It's as if these gals have all been there 50 years....and that in itself is really COOL to me, but not if they show that they're so bored out of their minds that they don't give a damn. I'm a darn good tipper ALWAYS, but there were times I felt like not leaving anything but a damn dime on the table and walking out. I DID find out that awhile back the "kids" of the orig. owners either inherited or otherwise took over the place from their parents. Well...same old story....the kids who never had to sweat and slave to build up a great business have now run it into the ground. It's a shame, because that place was a total GEM in a completely rural area that normally doesn't have a place anything close to what DUDE'S once was. I don't eat fast foods ever, and I'm afraid that the next spring's chase season meal if we land in Sidney again will be at Subway. That's a bit better than fast food, and I can hang with that meal for one night. But I won't be spending any more money at DUDE'S STEAKHOUSE unless those new owners get the place back up to the stellar restaurant that it definitely was at one time. Pity the orig. owners...hopefully they didn't see what was happening to their beloved restaurant. Sorry about this, Dudes....but you've brought these reviews about yourself. Hey...JUST FIX the problem(s)....and I'd bet everybody would LOVE to give you a second chance and you'd be back riding high where your restaurant belongs. read more
