Overall reasons I'm giving it 5 stars: Quality, taste, price, nostalgia, variety. As a student in Vancouver, Duffin's was my mecca. They boast a wide variety of quality, delicious cheap eats. My go-tos were and still are the donuts and the sandwiches. The donuts are leagues ahead of anything from Timmies, and the sandwiches are unique and truly something to write home about. Torta subs come with banana peppers and avocado among your standard lettuce, tomato, mayo, and the Vietnamese subs come with pickled carrot/Chinese raddish and fresh jalepeno (seeds removed thank goodness). The donuts always taste fresh, with a nice brittle glazed surface (no wetness here) and pillowy tender yeasty goodness on the inside (of course this will vary on the donut you are ordering, can you tell I like glazed yeast donuts?). Others will rave about the fried chicken, I've had it, and yes it's really good. Personally my comfort food is more along the carb line so that's why I go for the sammies and donuts. They don't have Chinese food anymore, but it looks like they now serve Pho! This place never seizes to amaze. read more

Respectfully, I have to disagree with Yelp for not including Duffin's in the Great Donut Debate, and feel obliged to speak on their behalf. The lovely ladies at Duffin's have been serving up a dizzying array of seemingly unrelated food items including but not limited to: Chinese food (not anymore, sadly), Mexican torta sandwiches, banh mi, tamales, papusas, excellent fried chicken (spicy or regular), decent coffee (brown sugar!), burgers & fries and shockingly traditional donuts in fifty different flavours made on the premises to the hungry workers of East Vancouver for as long as I can remember. This place really attracts the strangest, ghetto, hobo-like people in the neighborhood. If you're wearing a clean shirt, you'll feel out of place here. Scruff up your hair, lose a few teeth and you'll fit right in. That being said, the food here is probably the most amazing surprise you'll ever get in your life. Everything is home made here from the doughnuts to fried chicken, and everything tastes great. My favorite is the fried chicken. My friends go for the doughnuts and torta subs. I am very glad that duffin's is no longer a block from my house for my well being. We had take out here way too often before they moved away. Now that it is a bit of a drive away, it's a very seldom late night guilty pleasure. They make some of the lightest and airy yeast donuts and cheapest and delicious tortas you can get anywhere. The bread is always fresh and they make everything to order. They have expanded their already giant menu to include pupusas which are also yummy. This place is iconic. Since having been introduced to Duffins over 8 years ago, it has been a staple of mine for cheap and tasty take out food, namely the torta sandwiches, tamales, and paposas. It can get pretty busy around midday for lunch and late evenings when everywhere else has closed. The donuts are ok, nothing special but better than Tim Hortons. The prices are awesome (especially essential because a certain university is vacuuming up 80% of my income these days). I really didn't know what to expect from a place that had soups, vietnamese subs, fried chicken, and donuts....but after reading the reviews i decided to try it. I drive by here every day so I thought, why not? I read the fried chicken is great, so I tried that....IT WAS SOOOOOO GOOD!!! They have spicy and regular. Super crispy and realllly juicy and moist on the inside - a MUST TRY! The viet sub was okay...the bread wasn't the same bread you would normally get with a sub, it was more like just regular hot dog bun bread. Am I crazy to think that these are the best donuts in Vancouver? If you get them when they are fresh, there are no better than the traditional and maple glazed. Torta subs are also delicious. Try the hot chicken torta once and you'll find yourself detouring to east Vancouver whenever you crave the perfect hot sandwich. The service is great at this place. The ladies there are super nice. For the fried chicken I don't know why there are so many reviews praising the fried chicken when I honestly thought it tasted gross. The chicken tasted old and there was no flavour to it besides salty buts here and there. I love pupusas and ordered a couple because you have to order at least 2. They weren't bad but they weren't good either. The flavour once again was lacking. Maybe it's because I always get authentic pupusas from my Salvadorian friend so I have a higher standard. Also tried the donuts and thought there were some that were good and some that were bad. The Crullers were gross and stale but the double chocolate was ok. Spiciness reminded me of Church's spicy (right amount for me), while the regular reminded me of KFC, a tad bit saltier with the batter. Overall, tastes pretty good. I was recommended this place for fried chicken. If you are to go get some, just maybe double check on the count. Very cool and interesting place. They have everything on the menu from all different cuisines. I like their food. Friends had reported that this place had the best fried chicken, but in my acclimatized westcoast state, I would never dare set foot in a doughnut shop, let alone one on the corner of Knight and 41st. The place was much bigger inside and more populated than I expected, and had everything from a food court style chinese food banquet, a wide selection of Vietnamese sandwiches, tortas, doughnuts, cookies, everywhere I looked, more food. But forget all that. Fried chicken. Let's go. Two pieces please. One breast, one thigh. Spicy. (Under $5). Armed with nothing but a napkin, I attacked. Nothing you'd want to drive across town for, but a solid grab-and-go place in my hood and on my way to work. I'll frequently stop to buy a sandwich and salad to take to work, along with a hot chocolate. Nothing is blow-away amazing here, and I try to skip the donuts (although when I have tried them they were decent to good), they don't do flavored lattes, despite having the syrup (?) and the Chinese food is terrible (another reviewer says its been discontinued anyway - good thing!). Staff are inconsistent. A couple of the regular ladies are very sweet, but I've also had rude servers, include one who actually rolled her eyes at me when I tried to ask for a tea latte. I have yet to try their chicken, so I can't comment on that. And I do really like their Vietnamese sandwiches. Not somewhere where you'd want to linger for long, despite some of the locals who seem to be there all day. I will occasionally stop in for a quick breakfast if I'm heading south or into work on a weekend. Passable breakfast platter, but again, nothing exceptional. Wish they had a crappy-version eggs benedict ;) I'd probably come in on Sunday more often if they did. I had a bad experience with customer service. They take my order and my money but dont make my food. Im standing around like an idiot while the people after me got there food. After about 20 mins i ask them where my food is and they tell me they forgot to make it. What kind of establishment is this! Get some people with a brain to work! Took about 30 mins to get my food. I read an article about this place a couple months ago and thought I'd try it out. I walked in and caught a whiff of stale oil. This should've been my first clue. I browsed through the display case of various donuts. Nothing seemed to wow me but I saw what's known as 'Timbits'. Perfect. I was looking to buy some for my daughter's soccer team. I was still skeptical so i asked if i could have a sample. The woman wrinkled her nose and said they didn't offer samples. I wasn't asking her for a whole donut but a sample of their timbits. I was prepared to buy a couple of dozen but wanted to be sure they were as good as Timbits. I was surprised she refused me so I asked if i could speak to the manager. Again, I was turned down. Then she asked if I'd want anything else. I told her I wouldn't give them any of my business because all I was asking for was a sample ad not a donut. Our last night in Vancouver and I was looking for something cheap & fun as we had already eaten through our travel money. Duffin's came up on the Yelp search as it was near the place we were staying. My partner was a little hesitant but finally gave in. We ordered a chicken banh mi, fried chicken and got some donuts. Wow! Everything I wanted all in once place and really f'ing good. Definitely some tasty fried chicken. The banh mi and donuts were excellent as well. So if you're not sure what to eat, this place has it all. Plus it's opened 24/7.
